That's certainly debatable, but most of his run was definitely low tier because I've no memory whatsoever of his IC reign. His B-Team stuff w/ Bo though was entertaining to me, mainly when they finally won a match and they had their epic celebration. That was fun. But them winning the tag titles just shouldn't have happened because it went against who the frick they were. That and it devalued the titles even more, if that's even possible, because if they could win the tag titles... then any scrubs off the street could. Sucked.

To me, anything Slater did from the free agent angle to winning the tag titles on Smackdown overshadows most or all of Axel's entire run. His peak was more entertaining that Axel's peak.

My favorite Axel moments have to be when he'd just stand in the background while Heymand or Lesnar spoke, looking awkward as fuck. Axel should never have been a Heyman guy. Should have stuck with Cesaro and pushed him to the moon.

Curtis Axel winning the IC title and pointing to the sky was a Perfect moment. Problem was, it also cast a huge shadow over his career, as he'd inevitably be compared to one of the very best overall performers ever. Nobody could be expected to live up to such a comparison (well maybe Charlotte has).

I agree that Axel never should have been a Heyman guy, and RybAxel did him no favors. But by the time the stuff with Miz came around, Axel was better at knowing his role, and shutting his mouth.

The comparison with Slater is natural as both guys came in to the main roster at the same time. I think Axel suffers more from the disappointment of higher expectations, but as for their WWE careers, I still think its very close.

Also worth mentioning that McGillimacttermy had some bangin' theme music before his Curtis Axel days.

Also worth noting that his NXT class had the worst names. Michael McGillicutty, Husky Harris, Lucky Cannon, Kaval.....

I honestly think the idea that Curtis Axel couldn't get out of his father's shadow and that's what hurt him is an overrated assumption. That implies that if he wasn't the son of Mr Perfect he would have been a bigger star. Maybe but that then implies that he would look and wrestle the same as he does which honestly his look fucked him and his mediocre ability was only mediocre because he was a Hennig. If he wasn't he probably would have sucked even more.

You're either David Flair and Erik Watts, or you're Randy Orton and The Rock. Some offspring just don't have IT. A last name can only get you in the door, the family tree only has so many strong branches. You have to deliver. Charlotte Flair is not one of the best female wrestlers in WWE history because her last name is Flair.

I won't hear all this negativity about the Axeman. He has a win over HHH. 'nuff said.

    So does the Brooklyn Brawler.

I think I agree with the consensus that he found his niche better in Outcasts and B-Team but up til that point was mediocre. I’d take Slater any day.

Slater's great and they should've really used him more these last few years. He'd have been lots of fun as a manager.

Slater and Rhyno getting the tag titles was one of the best storylines they have done in this mediocre era. Tbf when SmackDown split, it was by far the better show and everything they did hit. Curtis was stuck in some weird factions and saying he was an after thought is being generous. I personally think these firings are just vindictive as the WWE conference call got the stock up even though Vince lied about SmackDown ratings and how Mania were profit wins even though they were giving it away.

Man, I always had the idea that Curtis Axel should have either quit wrestling or just stepped back from wrestling full time and become Charlotte Flair's "advisor", the same way Mr. Perfect was for Ric Flair back in the 90's.

    So much for that...

By sheer coincidence, I watched Payback 2013 last night and Axel winning the IC Title in a very good 3 way, on Father’s Day, was a pretty cool moment.

Very good show, actually. Main even was pretty much garbage, but some great stuff underneath. Particularly Punk and Jericho and Ziggler and Del Rio. I enjoyed that. And I do so miss PPVs that clock in at under 3 hours.

There was allot of mileage left in Slater and Rhyno, but as soon as they won the tag titles, they got less and less screen time until they all but disappeared.

Drew Gulak has been released. He had a hell of a 2020 on Smackdown, considering how he was used prior to that. Word is going around that his contract was coming due for a decision soon and he made it clear he wasn’t going to re-sign.

May as well put this here in the appropriate thread. Drew Gulak has been released, he had asked for ir and wasn't going to re-sign.

Gutted but hope he does well elsewhere as he is very talented technically and on the microphone. I always liked him and loved the Powerpoint presentations!

Gulak's Powerpoint thing was the best thing he did. Bland AF otherwise. Nice for him to get a solid push on SD with Bryan before he was done.

Gulak's gone? Frick, I really liked him. Why does he get sacked, but Mr. Negative Personality Tony Nese is still around?

Drew's powerpoint presentation was legitness, and he's had a great string of matches w/ Bryan. He'll be missed.

It sounds like his contract was up, asked for more money on the new one and they weren’t wanting to re-sign him to a larger deal...so that was it.

He's back on the Smackdown roster page on WWE's website so...maybe things are looking up.

There was always something about Drew that I liked. Looks like a real average Joe, but all that considered, he's done really rather well in WWE.

Fur'd, that's kind of a relief because at least he's not gone. He's been one of my favorite commentators for a long time.

I love Nigel I really do. Aside from DB he's probably my favourite personality in all of WWE. So likeable and good at his job. I don't think there's anyone contracted to WWE that I'd be more sad about if I heard they got fired or whatever.

1 big knock on ROH, for me, was that I didn't enjoy their commentary team. That was until Nigel returned and then went to the booth.

lol. I'll be honest, I was very very curious to see what he was actually going to bring but I'm also thinking we don't know what his actual contract was going to entail. Personally I agree with those saying he wasn't under a wrestling contract and he was only hosting Mania to announce that he was going to be coming out of retirement to play for the Bucs.

I liked them and thought they were great as Seth's muscle after the fumble of a run with Maverick as their manager. But they did get sidelined a couple times, most recently was at a crucial time. Funny thing was I just read a couple day ago that their return to TV was imminent...

Toka and Razar are going to be huge in AEW.

And I mean that literally. They're probably 4 times the size of all the middle-school kids working there right now.

Yeah AOP were the shit with Paul Ellering but everything up until joining with Seth was pretty weak. They lost Ellering and gained Rockstar Spud....which made zero sense. Then injuries hit them both and it was like with The Revival where it happened at the worst times. The momentum starts being built up and then boom, one guy goes down. That guy returns, boom, the other goes down.

I liked that they tried to give them promo time with subtitles and etc. They came off as tough-ass dudes who wanted to start to make an impact. Nothing wrong with that. They just couldn't get over the fact they couldn't stay healthy.

That shit was cool and I liked what came of it, the Rollins allegiance.

I also felt like they could have used a little more time in NXT if the idea was to split them from Ellering. I don't believe there was a plan at all to be honest for them once they were called up. We've seen that too often where someone gets called up and for what reason?

I'd be shocked if they both stayed in pro wrestling. One of them has ties to Bellator MMA so that might be the future for one and the other, idk. Hard to say.

Yeah, those promos where they were in suits and had the subtitles were badass and the alliance with Seth had potential. Dropping Ellering I could forgive but pairing them with he stuff with Live GM Maverick made no sense and then they got overshadowed by his 'comedy' pissing gimmick, definitely did them no favors.

I could see The Authors of Pain (Writers Of Violent Prose?) having a Hell of a run in Japan.

They'd be right up there with Guerrillas of Destiny as two, big foreign monsters.

I say have the legend Brandi Rhodes train them.

Look here, what's really super fucking annoying and extremely moronic is every single time WWE releases someone in the last year or so the response from you is "AEW should pick them up!" Now we're having personnel getting let go and we have Bert going "AEW should pick them up!"

It's annoying. Ever since AEW became a thing it's like a knee jerk reaction post "They should go to AEW!" Vince's secretary was fired, "Barb Smith is ALL IN!" Fuck off.

I'm one of many who have said that the WWE has been the biggest promotion on the planet by a country mile for a long time so people should dial it back with coming at TNA, AEW, ROH,NJPW, etc for signing released WWE talent because a lot of wrestlers have worked there. I literally said this about Rusev where I took no issue with him going to AEW.

I can't get over how much you love to bring other discussions into the current one. Stay on topic, moron.

The joke is more about people going to impact not aew, typical Iowan hyperbole. I didn't really care about Ryder or Hawkins or Slater going to AEW. Cardona (Ryder) is doing well though and is bigger than a lot of AEWs roster so if it works out than good for him. I don't think they should bring in AOP or Bork Lazer but there are people who didn't get a fair shake in WWE that have the potential to be big stars like Brodie Lee, FTR, and Miro, whether you see it or not, other people do.

As the post you didn't even read says people should be allowed to work places after WWE. AEWs women's roster is their weakest point it 100% makes sense to bring in trainers with a proven track record like Serena Deeb and Sarah Stock instead of bringing in nobodies and hoping for the best just because keyboard warriors from nowhere Iowa are going to complain online about it every chance they fucking get.

I am on topic, calling you by your nickname is a must. Keyboard warrior? LOL. You're trying to sound tough and it never works for you Kyle.

There are multiple jokes, some include TNA, some include AEW. And again, I never have once taken issue with a wrestler or personnel finding work after WWE, show me where I took issue? I'm pretty sure I posted that my issue is solely with people like you who immediately go to "They should sign with AEW!" or "AEW should sign them!"

Countless memes and posts taking jabs at AEW for signing former WWE talent. I'm sorry if you were too busy trying to justify hate crimes to notice the last year or so of memes, posts, etc.

    Ok, Shaun King.

I provided reasons AEW should sign them, you think they shouldn't just because they're from WWE.

    Shaun King?

You did provide reasons why AEW should sign them and if you notice I didn't dispute those reasons. I didn't even say AEW shouldn't sign them because they're from WWE. I've made it clear (3 times if you count this upcoming comment) that I only take issue with the idea that fans should immediately go "AEW SHOULD SIGN THEM!" when someone leaves WWE. I even pointed out that I took zero issue with Rusev coming to AEW.

But Jesus Christ, does AEW need everything the WWE used to have or can they maybe get a little room to do their own shit without idiotic fans like Bert Rittenhouse.

We're completely on topic big guy.

Shaun, if the best people for the job are ex-WWE people why would you look at more people?

They're already doing their own shit when 3 out of 4 EVPs were never in WWE. The majority of the tag division was never in WWE.

If they need people and the best people for the job are ex-WWE I hope they hire them all.

I think some of these people who feel they didn't receive a chance in WWE are going to also feel that they didn't receive a fair chance in AEW. Zack Ryder and Tye Dillinger are a couple of names that spring to mind.

I actually had to google Shaun King so I'm not sure how this guy is a negative when the stuff I'm pulling it up seems to be a lot of him posting about hate crimes toward minorities but hey you know him better than me.

Oh wow, 3 of the 4 EVPs were never in WWE. And? Do you even understand my issue here? Nope.

So you're basically saying that since Sarah Stock and Serena Daeb were trainers in WWE=best people for the job? If they are truly the best, sure. But again, that's irrelevant to the fact that not even 12 hours after news breaks you have people like you saying "Ex-WWE person? SIGN THEM AEW!" That's literally my only issue and you're trying to make it out like I don't want WWE talent to find jobs in the profession they are good at. Never once said that, made it crystal fucking clear what my issue is here.

Shawn Spears at least seems perfectly content to wrestle ocassionally and work with legends like Tully Blanchard, I remember him saying something to that effect in an interview.

Cardona is physically bigger than a lot of the AEW roster I think he'll be a good midcarder, but we'll see.

Ryder is another guy who literally spent 99% of his career in WWE so it's hard to tell what his upside is. Based on the WWE run, what seemed to work was the over the top Jersey Shore before Jersey Shore was a thing character. WOO WOO WOO. Fuckin knowin it bro. I think that's why many had high hopes for that team with Mojo as it was more like what Ryder was doing in the past.

Ultimately he's an extremely average talent but a great guy. He's someone who worked for the biggest company in the world so despite him being a jobber most of the time, he can probably provide some tips...idk. Him being in AEW reminds me of when WCW signed and pushed Marty Jannetty and Rick Martel.

Maybe a short initial push but my cynical self says he will fade into the background. We will see though I feel he is more beneficial on the mic than in the ring. He’s not bad in the ring per se but doesn’t really stand out.

I’ve not seen Impact at all but recently I saw an article from EY seemingly taking passive aggressive shots at Vince winning the title on Impact for not being pushed further.

He wasn’t even the best one in Sanity.

It's annoying. Ever since AEW became a thing it's like a knee jerk reaction post "They should go to AEW!" Vince's secretary was fired, "Barb Smith is ALL IN!" Fuck off Kyle.

    Whats with this Kyle shit?

Havent seen either. I'm just basing this on things I have heard. Got a few friends FROM OVERSEAS IN GERMANY that message me a few times a month to tell me I need to start watching as they like it better than wwe and aew.

Also, Busted Open has been ranting and raving about it but i take that with a grain of salt due to Tommy Dreamer being on the show 2 or 3 times a week.

That post wasn't for you guy, or can you not tell the difference your name and Bert? Odd.

I'm not allowed to speak on this any longer out of respect to Iowa.

Though Bert shouldn’t have brought up Iowa in the first place. It’s turned into a bit of an embarrassing playground fight here.

lol, your German friends praising the least respected wrestling show out there is some hipster talk. Pretty soon they'll be like "Ich war in Impact bevor Impact cool war"

My hipster DJ friend? I'm confused. Plus, be careful about going off topic my friend.

OHHHHH you're talking about my comment in the US politics thread about one of my DJ friends who ranted about what Donald Trump Jr said? Dude, idk if this makes him a hipster, but his rant was pro-Kyle so you should be cool with that just like you are with your German Impact friends.

His previous username was Uncanny Iowan. But yeah it is derailing argument thread material, that's why I told him to stay on topic. I couldn't care less if people know my views on self defense but I'm not trying to discuss it here.

I tried to watch Impact and made it a few weeks but Josh Matthews without Don Callis is unsufferable and after watching WWE and AEW that have some form of an audience I can't get through a wrestling show without one.

See your post about your DJ FRIEND in us politics. He went on a rant or something and made you woke.

I'm not worried about going off topic. If mth gets mad he just pm's me and tells me what gold dust or boogeyman action figure to buy him and he leaves me alone

What is the night man terrors doing in the impact zone?

this, the twitch streaming, laying off a ton of people during pandemic right before they announce record profits. mcmahon really wants to go out as much of a real life super heel as possible.
