Holy shit I did not know that Shelby Walker was his gf. I remember reading up on her, just a small article not too long ago, one of those "what might have been" type stories I believe. This was probably 4-5 years ago. She kind of looked like Trish Stratus:

Kang didnt start losing all his fights until 33-34 and even at his peak was maybe a notch above journeyman. Is normal.

Kang was a real prospect back in the day and he was riding a 23 fight streak without a loss before he lost a split decision to Kazuo Misaki in the finals of the Pride Bushido GP. He beat some really solid fighters of the time like Andrei Semenov, Amar Suloev, Pat Healy, Ninja Rua, Dean Lister and Akihiro Gono. His GF killed herself right before the Pride Bushido finals, pretty impressive that he even fought and defeated Gono in the semi-finals. Compare his record pre and post Bushido 13. Of course, higher level of competition and the fact he had fought for 11 years (debuted in 1998) by the time he made his UFC debut didn't help things either, lot of wear and tear I'd assume.

I don't know about a missing bicep but Tra Telligman might be who you're thinking of:

Kang tore his bicep in the Gono fight at Bushido 13, don't know about it going "missing" though. I remember Tra Telligman missed one of his pectorals, that looked very weird.

It's an aspect of the sport that on one hand I'm familiar enough with weight cutting to know the risks but on the other it's almost like, the whole sport would have to go through a complete overhaul if they ended up doing away with weight cutting and just had fighters come in at their natural weight. Here are a couple solid clips from past Joe Rogan podcasts talking about what he'd like to see happen or what might have to be done in the future with weight cutting, weight classes, etc.:

Somebody died attempting to cut weight in Brazil a year or two ago. As soon as it happens in the UFC there will be a media shitstorm.

It's ridiculous, let's worry about guys smoking pot or taking viagra but turn a blind eye to guys shedding huge chunks of their body mass and weighing in like AIDS patients so soon before hand to hand combat.

I like Rogan's idea for finding guys' 'natural' weight and verifying this as their fight weight. Fighters check in when they want, when they're ready and say they're fit/healthy, and are cross checked versus their hydration % to determine their appropriate weight class.

This would be an earthquake to the current format, but if the discussion is paramount fighter health/safety versus the most heinous possible outcome, well fuck then, a proper shakeup would just be the necessary cost of making this right.

Saying all that, Mark is right, we'll get change when the hammer is dropped after something terrible happens in UFC, and only when that something terrible happens.

Adding a few weight divisions like in boxing would probably be an easier solution. Yes each division would lose depth but there would be more divisions to fill cards which would off-set that.

Khabib would have a much healthier time making 165 than 155, for example.

I don't hate the idea of adding a few more weight classes, but divisions are often thin for competition as it is. Wouldn't take much before each division consisted of one or two relevant competitors and that's it. The sport's still filling out itself.

And adding divisions doesn't do anything to fill a card, it's still the same pool of people.

    Not true.

For example instead of let's say 4 middleweight fights on one card they would have to be spread out to 2 cards because the original card would need to make room for a 195 lb fight or two. Or a 195 lb fight and a 175 lb fight. Very rough example but it would even itself out.

Preparation times for fighters would also be shortened without the need to cut an unreasonable amount of weight meaning fighters could fight more often I'm theory.

Catching fighters "when they're ready" to be weighed for their natural weight leaves plenty of room to continue beating the system.

    Also re: same talent pool-

Some guys currently at 155 would be fighting some currently at 170 increasing matchmaking possibilities. It's not uncommon for boxers to go between divisions when it's plausible for them to do so.

So you're just talking about shuffling the deck and labeling it differently, and not really adding anything? Ok, sure. Guys could just beebop from one division to the next out of the same pool of fighters and that would add some dynamic. In the meantime I think it would begin to zap titles of some of their meaning and importance. Not that we aren't toying with that already anyway. I've also heard arguments that adding weight classes would only increase cutting issues as some guys would just get greedier with their cuts and figure why not just shed the extra few pounds to make that new weight since I'm already so close anyway. This already happens in collegiate wrestling.

And eh, like I said I don't hate it. Just think it's more robbing Peter to pay Paul than actually cutting to the heart of truly curbing weight cutting while keeping the divisions meaningful.

joe rogan brought up a nice point about more divisions, especially if they can somehow curb the crazy weightcutting. the more divisions means more 'superfight' cards pitting champions against each other. and opportunities will open up for more people.

i am totally down for more divisions. i am really against weightcutting too. at least 10-15lbs over with a week or two to go.

Would this be generally acceptable/favorable? Bit of an upward rising system to account for the variance in body types of the bigger boys.

Still would want to see a 'natural' weight verification system of some kind put in, as this doesn't solve entirely the problem of guys looking for weight advantages.

There would absolutely be shuffling if weight divisions were closer together. Would come with the territory but again it would expand matchmaking opportunities considerably. The weight cutting issue wouldn't go away entirely but it would be curbed significantly.

I totally get (and agree with) the point about more titles meaning less value to them but that ship has kind of already sailed with de Randamie being able to call herself a UFC champ. Like Matthew pointed out it would also open up the possibility of more "superfights" which is an excellent marketing tool which would give ppvs adequate main events as a "champ vs champ" bout could headline even if neither champ is over enough to be able to headline on their own.

I like it, the only issue is that the HW divisions would be godawful.

Yup. 205 to 265 is silly but there are seemingly never gonna be enough giants to make the real HW's a consistent division.

Maybe 210-235 and then 235-265? Wouldn't be a perfect fix but it could work I think. If there were fewer HW fights it might take focus off how terrible the divisions are. And make them seem like more of a spectacle when they do go down.

235 would be fine as far as I could give a rip.

Just no more than something like those 11 divisions. That's plenty.

235 would be a good cap if it weren't for the Overeems and Rothwells who are skilled enough to warrant being in the UFC.

For whatever reason I got the urge to check out the most insane records in MMA, it's pretty much a given that Travis Fulton is the GOAT of insane records. I think the top picks would be..

    Travis Fulton: 253-52-10 (1 NC)
    Dan Severn: 101-19-7
    Jeremy Horn: 91-23-5
    Jeff Monson: 61-26-1
    Ikuhisa Minowa: 62-41-8

Out of the currently active guys I think Mousasi is at or near the top with 46-6-2. Mousasi has also been fighting good/very good/great fighters since like 2008. 250 or so of Travis Fulton's opponents on the other hand are more or less bums. Melvin Guillard is up there with 32-17-2, he has one win since 2013 though. Some others that deserve a mention is Gleison Tibau with 33-12 and Joe Daddy with 33-16.

The Reem at 42-15, with only really 5 cans since he was 16-3. Competing at a world level consistently for coming up to 15 years. Beat JDS, Werdum, Arlovski, Mir, Belfort x2, Hunt x2, Lesnar. Only lost to top 10 opponents since he was 4-3.

Gilbert Yvel, 57 fights, 39 wins, all by stoppage.

Probably Reem continuously faulting on his journey while Fedor and Cain marched their way to the top of the mountain with an air of invincibility.

I think Reem getting KO'd badly a couple of times at LHW is one reason some people refuse to take him seriously. People forget he was like 21-23 back in those days and was killing himself to get down to 205. Not to mention he was fighting some pretty sick competition, i.e Shogun, Diet Nog, Arona, Igor, Vitor, Chuck etc.. He had almost built up mythical status at HW until the steroid debacle and then getting dropped like a sack of shit against Bigfoot.

I've been a Reem "fan" since the Pride days, but he can be a very frustrating guy to support at times. How many fighters in history has been on their way to victory so many times but still manage to lose?

You know I realized we just had this conversation a month or 2 ago but I wasn't sure if it was on this board but after reading these 2 comments it reminded me it was here.

I think what soured me the most was the hype of him at HW. He was Dream and SF HW champion but it wasn't like he fought anyone worth a damn. His one title defense in 3 years as SF champ was that abysmal fight with Werdum (what I meant by worth a damn were the guys he fought prior to Werdum at HW, not Werdum being shit). He was K1 GP Champion, but it wasn't exactly a great tournament for him. If this were 1999-2002, but when he won it, eh, wasn't that deep. He came in, beat Lesnar, then failed a piss test.

But yeah he's had a helluva career overall in MMA even I can't deny that.

War Machine has been sentenced to life in prison for the Christy Mack incident. Good. Prison might be the best place for a guy like this.

No doubt he'd have seriously hurt someone else had he been let free. Dude can't control himself and has zero understanding of the causation his thinking/actions have in endangering people. He also finds this behavior gratifying. Just not much more to it, and so good riddance.

Yeah the guy was a ticking timebomb. Already served time in prison before this for similar shit right? Probably a combo of drugs and just being crazy. I mean fuck, on TUF he was fucked up. You just look at the guy and go Yep, martial arts was not created for you with your fucking Crazy Town singer inspired tats.

Saitama Super Arena as a Pride fighter in 2004 or MSG as a UFC fighter in 2017. Which one would you rather have on your resume?

I think it would be Saitama for me as well. Something about the whole concept from the introduction of the drums to the 70,000 fans to hearing the ring announcer lady screech my name in an awkward way haha. Especially back then. What made me think of this was the upcoming UFC event in Japan this September at Saitama and it just brings back so many great Pride memories.

Easily Pride/Saitama for me. I know for many MSG is like some sort of church for sports though, I can understand it being a big deal for many. I was there for some NHL in 2014 and it felt just like any other arena I've been though, disgusting hot dog fucked up my stomach as well.

Current MSG isn't even the MSG anyway is it? Hasn't it been moved, rebuilt and shit like ten times.

    MSG

telling girls in the USA (and probably Japan) that you fought in the MSG is more likely to get you laid

in the end thats all that matters right

not really. its been renovated a bunch of times, but it hasn't really moved persay for like 60-70 years as far as I know

its the same building Frazier/Alli fought in, which I believe is the biggest event in history/sports history

the location of MSG is what makes it fun. if you live in the Metro area you can take a train right into Penn Station and you are essentially blocks from Times Square, Broadway, etc.. I was there for UFC 205 when McGregor was fighting Alvarez, and the entire city was filled with drunk Irish people taking it over. It was absolutely the most insane scene I have ever seen in my life

no where else will you see such a combination of skeezy, dirty, pretty, rich, poor, etc walks of life all in one condensed area like nyc

It means pretty much fuck all to anything since the late 90s or so as well, but to the point.

That's why I said "MSG in 2017". It's not so much about what MSG means to MMA as to what MSG means to combat sports. For years MMA fighters wanted to fight at MSG and now they can. As an MMA fighter, Saitama and MSG are the 2 main places I'd want to say I fought. Yeah Vegas is cool, that would be #3 for me, any of the key UFC venues. I disagree with P13 about how it hasn't mean anything since the late 90's. It's still a big fucking deal to perform in general at MSG. Look at those concerts with Jay Z, Kanye, Beyonce, the list goes on of shows within the last 5-10 years that were marvelous to many.

Like I said, it isn't near the mecca of sports/entertainment it used to be. The world's just smaller now and events are broader with all the same impact.

And I'm sure a number would say MSG, just like many would say Saitama, and I'm sure many more would say some other place. Things aren't as regional today, especially for a sport as global as mma. Nonetheless MSG just feels like the scripted answer, when there's no real connective tissue to anything relevant, in like, forever. For anyone who's watched mma for some time, Saitama just smacks of the sport.

I think one thing some or just one might be missing is the fact I didn't say Saitama Super Arena in 2017. I said in 2004. Now that doesn't take away my opinion that MSG is very important to me and to combat sports and entertainment in general but keep that mind. Saitama Super Arena back in 2004, as a fighter, that's a huge feather in the cap. So take that into consideration if that helps at all.

Doesn't help at all. MSG still would have run away with the poll in 2004. Just as many people hadn't heard of the super dome then as now.

But in 2004 you couldn't fight at MSG. That's why I'm saying, different eras deliver different options.

Like for me, gun to my head, I'm going to Japan in 2004. Something about that whole vibe of a Pride show, the screaming lady, the theatrics. But MSG is a close as fuck 2nd. To me, as an MMA fighter, those are the 2 major venues I'd like to scrap. I can't really think of anywhere else that would be a MUST for me as a fighter outside of Vegas.

I'd still pick Saitama. Its mma lore to me. MSG feels like walking through the echoes of someone else's history.

I can definitely get down with that comparison as well as it's how I kind of feel too. MSG isn't so much about MMA as it is just an entertainment staple. Saitama, in terms of MMA, is-for me-the end all be all back in the day.

Just because MMA was banned in NY doesn't mean people didn't want to fight there.

But back in 2004 you could argue that an MMA fighter might look at Saitama as a bigger deal than MSG. Just keeping this strictly MMA, no other forms of entertainment or combat as I've brought up, but just MMA. I can see back in 2004 MMA fighters looking at Saitama as the place to be over any other venue in the world.

MMA falls under the combat sports umbrella so nope, the answer would still be MSG.

I think that if you'd fought at both, you would want your last fight to be at the Saitama Super Arena in 2004 in front of 70,000 mad Japanese fans.

We don't have this kind of thing like our upstairs neighbors do, but I'm thinking maybe we should, so I'll just test it here for now and if we get enough contributions perhaps it'll get it's own thread..

So ya, The Total Top Ten (MMA Party) Time..

my top ten fighters I'm most looking forward to watching compete atm..

    1. Khabib Nurmagomedov - his relentless pressure, top control, and chin make for a mesmerizing combination
    2. Max Holloway - absolute gamer with an action skillset to match
    3. Zabit Magomedsharipov - like watching a video game, looking forward to seeing him tested more and more
    4. Stipe Miocic - great skillset for a big man on a ridiculous hw win streak
    5. Tony Ferguson - a trainwreck of skills and attitude. standing, grappling, transitions all a fun hot mess
    6. Demetrious Johnson - best all around skillset in the game p4p atm
    7. Darren Till - super fun kickboxing base rising the ranks
    8. Francis Ngannou - scariest power in all of the sport
    9. Daniel Cormier - all around good marks with a top notch fight iq
    10. Brian Ortega - will throw ambitious attempts from all angles of any discipline

I kept off fighters who we're probably not going to see anytime soon i.e. Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, Diaz brothers, and McGregor.

    1. Max Holloway-Arguably my favorite fighter right now with BJ Penn hopefully being retired for good
    2. Cyborg-Close 2nd to my favorite fighter today, always violent, never a boring fight.
    3. GSP-Who the fuck doesn't like to watch the GOAT? Fuck them because there are sadly quite a few.
    4. Tony Ferguson-Like you said, a hot mess lol. Both in the cage and on the mic lol.
    5. Dustin Poirier-Been on his dick for awhile
    6. Daniel Cormier-Best LHW not named Jon Jones on the planet today
    7. Thug Rose-Fun fighter
    8. Justin Gaethje-Heard he only has 5 more fights left in his career, better start a time capsule, they're the shit.
    9. Wonderboy-Other than the 2nd Woodley fight I've never really been bored with this creative ninja
    10. Francis-The most violent HW since RoidReem

I only didn't include GSP for the same reason as Jones or Conor. No confidence he'll be active any time soon, if at all.

That's a good point. I guess I was thinking that he would fight in 2018, before any of the guys I mentioned lol.

So taking away GSP, I want to not necessarily put this person as my #2 but it's someone who I just find to be awesome to this day.

    Fedor.

I know you didn't say "Only UFC fighters" but obviously that's the path we went but it's hard for me to really narrow it down so I had to branch out.

And trust that with the rumor of Chuck Liddell and his old ass coming back to fight supposedly, I would have put him on the list as well but that's something I can't say I'm truly anticipating. But with Fedor....I feel like win lose or draw we're looking at the final days. I think no doubt if he loses to Frank Mir, he's retiring for good. If he wins, he at least has reason to stick around, to finish the tournament....If he somehow pulls off any wins in this thing I'll be happy.

And how fucking depressing is that. To say "IF" Fedor wins even 1 fight I'll be happy. Better word is shocked. When he lost to Meathead I just...I still can't wrap my head around that loss.

There was a time Fedor would have owned a list of mine for most anticipated fighter. He and BJ sharing that top spot anyway (I know we share the same favs here, which is cool). But that time has passed for a while now. I'll still tune in whenever he fights in dire hope that he can turn back the clock at all anymore. But the anticipation now is cringing and crossing my fingers instead of back when it was getting excited to watch the baddest man on the planet do his thing.

Ah well though, harsh fucking sport.

So what do you think of Till or Zabit? Just to get your take on a couple guys I named that you didn't.

It's the same reason I still watch Ken Shamrock or would go out of my way to see Chuck fight even though I knew he was on the way out. You just want to see your "idols" continue on like they were 15-20 years ago.

I like Till. I honestly don't even know if I've seen Zabit fight. Looking at his wiki page I don't think I have but I do remember he was getting high praise from his performance at UFC 223. But Till could be something special, especially if he beats Wonderboy. Shit, even if he hangs with him for 3-5 rounds and loses, that's a big accomplishment.

And maybe you're right, but the rational side of me just can't look past the fact that he's beaten no one noteworthy enough to suggest he could beat the champ.

I felt Gus would smash Forrest Griffin back when Griffin was the former LHW champ and Gustafsson's biggest win was probably something like Jared Hamman. Just looking at styles and how they match up against each other. The old "styles makes fights" saying.

I think Zabit is possibly the better striker and more than likely the better grappler/wrestler. He also has a significant height and reach advantage (6 ft 1 in/71 inch reach vs. 5 ft 11 in/69 inch reach) over Max which is usually one of Holloway's main attributes.

Who knows though, just my observations and assumptions.

But.. I was also confident that Eddie Alvarez's style would cause problems for Conor. So, yeah..

Watching the MMA Hour and Chuck Liddell just confirmed it's 100% he will fight again, most likely around November time and against Tito Ortiz. It wasn't confirmed he will fight Tito but he said he will fight again. Oscar De La Hoya will promote.

Great. That's all we need is for Tito to get a win over a guy who hasn't won a fight in 10 years, hasn't fought in 8. Fuck man....This is going to be like Ken v. Royce 3 where Royce knocks him out in like 10 seconds.

Yeah, at this point Tito is waay less shopworn and fought fairly high level fighters (Shlemenko, Sonnen, McGeary) recently. I see Tito winning for sure, would not be shocked by a (T)KO.

Chuck said he's also interested in fighting Chael Sonnen.

Chuck said he wants to win two warm-up fights and then possibly fight... Jon Jones.

    Wtf??

How punch drunk is this guy? He feel he's a bad stylistic match-up for Bones..

This is how his striking looks in 2018:

Reason I'm watching the show is because Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier will be on. Looking forward to what they will say. Big Mac Dern and Rocky Pennington is on later as well.

I mean, he looks in shape but he throws like he's a HW. Those hands could still put me to sleep but yeah, fuck that. This guy is in my all-time favorites list. Only guy I like more is BJ Penn, not by much either. But here's thing:

I wouldn't be as negative if his last couple losses were submission losses or they went the distance. No, he was BRUTALLY knocked out with ease. Rich Franklin knocked him out with a gust of wind.

At first I thought the video was saying Usman and Ali were brawling each other. That's crazy. The second Usman turns his back they want to finally do some shit. Comedy.
