Renato 'Babalu' Sobral has called it a day and decided to retire, saying that his body "just cannot continue to do this anymore."

Say what you will about Sobral and there's a lot to say, but the guy really did have a helluva career and in his prime was one of the best around.

Sergio Pettis' 51-second knockout at RFA 8, last night .. pretty sure he will be gracing the UFC flyweight division with his presence sooner than later.

One would think he'd be an immediate contender but I imagine he'll get screwed out of a few title shots and then shit on by the fans like his brother.

Nick Diaz's "War MMA" promotion is airing their first card tonight. They're providing a free stream but are accepting donations from the kindly mma-folk.

    http://www.mmafighting.com/2013/6/22...-stream-online

    Fight Card

170 lbs.: Daniel Roberts vs. Justin Baesman

125 lbs.: Antonio Banuelos vs. Benny Vinson
145 lbs.: Caleb Mitchell vs. Evan Esguerra
205 lbs.: Roy Boughton vs. Liron Wilson
185 lbs.: Mike Persons vs. Clayton McKinney
135 lbs.: Darin Cooley vs. Cody Gibson.

However I will be watching the 14-fight "Glory 9" event.

edit; may not be mma, but here's Tyrone Spong destroying his opponent earlier tonight.

Apparently it's part of the rules in New York for the tourney structure that they aren't allowed to be given a standing 8 count, so if they are hurt on their feet it just gets stopped.

So I had Nick Diaz's WAR MMA on in the background last night while I was watching hockey, mainly to see if any shenanigans happened. In this regard, the event did not disappoint.

    Highlights include:

-Josh Rosenthal (yes, that Josh Rosenthal) on guest commentary
-The event was accepting donations online and apparently a lot of people settled on $4.20 as the right amount to donate
-The ring announcer. This guy was hilariously awful. So for one fight there was a split decision and the ring announcer had the scorecard in his hands. For the life of him he looked like he had never attemped to read scores before because he fumbled the scores so much that he read the final score as "28-29, all for your winner...(fighter A)."
ALSO, you know how Bruce Buffer will mention sponsors before fights but he uses his calmer, everyday voice to do this before he transitions to his announcer voice for introducing the fighters? Well, this guy decided that everything would be in his announcer voice for the evening so he's literally yelling out the names of the sponsors and it made me laugh out loud.
-Fighter entrances. For more than one fight at least one of the fighters was late for their entrance. In one situation the second fighter to come out was late by at least 3 minutes leaving everyone just sit there and wait
-Fight cancellations. The card on paper barely resembled what fights actually took place. At one point the ring announcer told us to "give it up to the fighters who were supposed to fight."
-Competition. Regional MMA at its finest. Good God were some of these guys terrible. I know it isn't the promotion's fault but yeesh.
-Finally, during the third round of one fight, one guy's (McKinney I think) corner was involved in an altercation and kicked out while the fight was still going on. So for the better part of three minutes and after the fight he had no corner.

Ah, didn't know that, thanks. They had similar rules in the K-1 tourneys but nowhere near as strict of course.

Why couldn't it have been Steve Mazzagatti?

    Or the female ref?

Recent Bellator signee Matt Riddle has retired from MMA.

I must say that signing him didn't really put the most positive light on Bellator. The guy is a moron, a PR nightmare, and a UFC washout. And didn't fight a single time for Bellator after they signed him.

Said that he could afford to be an mma fighter as it wasn't paying the bills. Maybe if he wasn't getting his purse withheld for drugs use, he might be able to afford it.

Mark Hammer is spot on about Matt Riddle being a moron and a PR nightmare, he was also pretty lucky with some of his wins.

Best thing about him is Nick Osipczak saying he was going to "piddle on Riddle"

As for Mayhem Miller...I'm hearing strange and implausible things on the grapevine about him pissing on his ex girlfriend or something similarly terrible.
He just put a FB update on with religious connotations saying God will see him through or something.

    Very strange.

Mental breakdown territory if this is in any way true.

I don't think Riddle is that much of a PR nightmare.. he got busted for pot.. which the limits are currently in the process of being raised on for the sport of MMA.. he'd be 9-3 in the UFC if it weren't for those 2 no-contest reversals.. it's really not that bad of a signing at all. What promotion wouldn't sign a guy that was 9-3 in the UFC and pretty much in the prime of his career? Not to mention one that puts on slugfests in like every fight.. He didn't fight for them because they didn't have a fight for him until just recently and he pulled out due to a rib injury .. when they told him they couldn't book him again until next year, he decided that he needed to retire to make money. The whole situation makes a lot more sense than it's being made out to.

He has trouble passing mandatory (scheduled) drug tests, talks about how MMA keeps him from beating up his family, and badmouths his employers. He's certainly not a PR dream.

His defense-void brawling style made for some good fights though so I reckon I have to hand it to him for that.

To this day I wonder what a fight between Kimbo and Ken Shamrock would've been like, or for that matter, Kimbo v. Frank Shamrock. For those that may not know, Frank offered to Kimbo that night even though I believe he was doing commentary but for some reason they went with Seth P. If what Seth said was true about them (Elite) telling him to stand and not try to go to the ground with Kimbo, then it was a good thing for the sport that Elite XC is not around.

I know they fought in K-1 a few times but other than that I'm missing the "amazing" factor. I don't really know much about Badi outside of K-1, or if there's some bad blood that used to exist between the 2 and now they're training together.

They pretty much hated each other. It's kind of like Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate training together for funzies.

In CC's defense Oleinik is 48-9 with 39 career submissions. He knows what he's doing on the ground and CC had been preparing for pretty much a boxer in Aleks Emelianenko. Buy yeah, ugly submission..

/Damn, he was the first guy to submit Jeff Monson since 1998.

So, the WSOF matchmaker has challenged Bjorn Rebney to do a Bellator vs. WSOF PPV event with the winner taking all of the gate and PPV revenue.

His proposed fight card looks like this:

    1. Anthony Johnson vs. Attila Veigh (LHW)
    2. Andrei Arlovski vs. Vitaly Minakov (HW)
    3. Marlon Moraes vs. Eduardo Dantas (BW)
    4. Yushin Okami vs. Alexander Shlemenko (MW)
    5. Rousimar Palhares vs. Douglas Lima (WW)
    6. Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Chandler (LW)
    7. Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Daniel Strauss (FW)
    8. Jon Fitch vs. Rick Hawn (WW)
    9. David Branch vs. Brett Cooper (WW)

-Tyrone Spong vs. Quinton Jackson (LHW/Superfight)

It will never happen but I'd watch it for sure. Biggest org vs org card we ever got was Sengoku vs. Dream and that was pretty cool.

So I've read on several MMA sites that GSP and Batista are going to be in the remake of Kickboxer. But GSP isn't playing the part of the White Warrior so I don't know if I'll give 2 shits about the remake lol. The sequels with Sasha Mitchell were ALRIGHT, but the first one is hard to beat. JCVD really was a great action star, I suggest you all check out "Welcome To The Jungle", shit is FUNNY, and in a good way.

GSP will probably plays Denis Alexio's role, that stunt guy (Moussi?) Van Damme's and Batista as Tong-Po.

Looking like that and this dude wants to be picked back up by the UFC? My how the mighty have fallen. This guy at one point was considered one of if not THE most dangerous heavyweights, I still remember him winning the strap and then talking about Fedor, who was pretty fresh on the scene as well, and wanting to fight him. DAMN!

Yeah motherfuckers don't realize Fedor basically rinsed every top HW. People were like, let's see him v. UFC HW's, and what did he do? Waxed them with ease. Sylvia and AA were easily top 5 at the time and Fedor took them out within a few minutes. Cain V reminds me so much of Fedor, unassuming HW, could probably make 205 if he worked at it, yet he destroys everyone. Damn shame Fedor couldn't work out a deal with the UFC at that time because IMHO he would've owned the HW division. Lesnar might have given him a little trouble due to his size and power, but Fedor would've weathered the storm and killed him within a round. No way Lesnar could handle those strikes, Couture would've been carried out on a stretcher, Mir would've been KO'd in a minute. Fedor probably would've retired as champ before the new breed of HW's made their way to him because he would've made an incredible amount of money v. Lesnar and Couture.

Thinking of Fedor made me remember that Satoshi Ishi vs. Mirko Crocop is confirmed for August 23 at IGF 2 in Tokyo. Ishi has pretty much traveled the MMA seniors circuit beating Rizzo, Minowa, Monson, Fujita and Sylvia, so why not finish it up with CC. If he get's by CC I'm guessing he gets invited to the UFC, just like Oleinik did. Mirko is beyond washed up but can still cause problems for most guys.

Ishi was super hyped in Japan when he debuted but stumbled fighting Yoshida and Fedor way too early. He's still only 27 and has put together a nice 12-2 record though.

As sad as it sounds, CC isn't much more than a gatekeeper to the big leagues these days.

Speaking of smaller promotions signing former UFC talents..

Ben Saunders will fight Matt Riddle for the vacant Titan FC WW title (August 22) and Jason Brilz will fight Vinny Magalhaes for the vacant Titan FC LHW title (September 26).

I thought Killer B was still in Bellator He did get fucking killed though both times he fought that Lima dude.

Has Riddle fought at all since being cut? I thought he was supposed to fight for Bellator, then he bailed on his debut, not sure if he's done anything since.

Brilz...poor guy, some think he should have a win over Diet Nog, can't say I disagree. But he got knocked the fuck out by Bader.

Saunders got cut after Lima smashed him the second time. He had some huge issues with Rebney as well, probably didn't help things.

Easily one of my favorite KO's ever btw..

Yeah those 2 are like Anderson and Franklin. Saunders was mowing through that tournament and then blam, gets killed again like last time. Extremely surprised the UFC hasn't snatched him back up but maybe we'll see him in WSOF or even back in Bellator. I do recall him being pretty vocal about his distaste for Bjork.

Georges St-Pierre has never been bigger. You can see it with the naked eye. The Québec fighter weighs about 200 lbs, whereas before he turned over around 190 lbs.

No, the break St-Pierre last few months has not made him more careless. This is muscle. GSP takes precautions. He has not yet made a decision about a possible return in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), but if he takes one more day of competition, he wants to live up - or size, rather - of his opponents. "If I come back, the guys in my category are often more than 200 lb, while me, I've always been 190 lbs off-season, he has explained in an interview with TVA Sports Tuesday. I was very small for my class. "Because of my size and my extended long range, I look like I weigh a lot, but in reality I'm lighter than others."

    http://tvasports.ca/combats/amm/gsp-...amais-24062014

I have to say, I'm liking the muscle. GSP provokes a homosexual reaction from me. But I don't think bulking up is going to help him. Muscle doesn't always translate well with fighting anyways. GSP showed that he was obviously past his prime in the Hendricks fight. I have no doubt in my mind that the GSP pre-ACL injuries would have made easy work of Hendricks. Against Hendricks (and even Diaz) he looked noticeably slow and his takedowns lacked the explosiveness that made them so effective when he was 50-45'ing everyone.

He pretty much has 50-45'd everyone other than Hendricks hasn't he? Shields I think got a round, Condit I think got a round, but for the most part he's dominated. Diaz was dominated for 5 rounds, Condit for at least 4, Shields only got a round because of the eye poke fucking up GSP's vision. Idk if dude is past his prime or was just mentally done with being a fighter...at that time. But if/when he does come back, giant ppv buyrate.

2 ACL injuries + many years of strenuous physical and mental training + noticeably losing a step and taking more damage in your last 3 fights than you had in your entire MMA career up to that point = very clearly past your fighting prime.

Watching the latest One FC show right now and I'm thinking that they really need to implement some god damn drug testing. Some of the guys look like roided up action figures with bacne (and ''chestne") all over the place. Funny that the most muscled up guys on the show are complete shit fighters.

Didn't he win with an elbow from the bottom, similar to how Riggs beat Chris Lytle, correct? Surprised they even allow elbows, seemed like that was the staple of Japanese MMA, no elbows but they allow stomps and soccer kicks.

    Correct.

And yeah, some Japanese organizations use elbows, Cage Force for example and I believe Vale Tudo Japan did (do?) as well. Historically it's not that common though, neither PRIDE, DREAM, K-1 HERO's, Sengoku, Shooto or Pancrase allow(ed) them.

ONE FC introductions are so weird. The announcer like.. SINGS the fighter's intro to the beat of their song. So strange. Lol

Hopefully Askren ends up in the UFC. He's started to parlay that excellent positional grappling into a style that finishes fights.

You're talking about the same person, "Screaming Pride lady'/Lenne Hardt. She's announcing for One FC now.

I just remember them shouting "groin kicker" or something similar a lot.

Didn't really know where to put this info but the new Kickboxer movie, the remake, Gina Carano is now on board. I can't wait to see this, the only one I have never watched is Kickboxer 5 and it's been on my DVR after a Kickboxer marathon aired on MyNetwork a month ago lol. I actually liked them all, but that first one is legendary.

I WANT TONG PO! GIVE ME TONG PO!!

And JCVD is going to be in this playing the role that Dennis Chan played, not the EXACT role but he will be the mentor/teacher to the dude playing Kurt Sloane.

Fuck yeah, Cro Cop with the signature Left High Kick and some wicked body shots to end it. Question, where the hell is all that blood coming from and how did it happen? Punches, kick? Couldn't really tell.

Looks like the LHK sliced him open just like it did Wand in their second fight. Blood comes from the back of Ishii's head.

Kind of. I think I saw him get submitted with a forearm choke by some jobber.

He banged him with a headkick then a couple of body shots.

    You said so yourself.

Well of course he can still "bang" in terms of striking, that's really all he has to offer in a fight. I just thought you meant by he can still bang=he can still go and look good...I was just saying that a fight or 2 prior he was submitted with a weak ass submission by some jabroni fighter. My bad, read it differently than you meant it.

It was Oleksiy Oleynik and he's not a jabroni. He's a 50-9-1 fighter, that's pretty good.

Also just looking at his record he clearly has the world record for Ezekiel choke victories.

Naw he's an alright chap, I forgot he was actually in the UFC presently and had that sick KO over Rosholt a month or so ago.

Oh, and apparently there was a wild fucking brawl that broke out involving Wanderlai, Fedor, and a few others after the fight ended...not sure if this was in the video OD posted but just in case..

Tim Sylvia was denied medical clearance for his "Reality Fighting'' main event tonight. I assume it has something to with him weighing in at 371.

Tim Sylvia, I wish I knew the deal with this guy. I have to say the biggest mistake he ever made was taking that Mercer fight. Maybe he wanted to try and prove a point that MMA is better than boxing but ever since then it's been hit or miss for this dude.

Here's a link talking about my cousin Joe Cason as a top 10 HW prospect. Some of you might've have seen him in Strikeforce when he fought OSP in a losing effort a couple years ago but he's a good fighter and is improving by the day. Sometimes trains up at Rufus as well.
