I don't suppose this would help any campaign to get back into the UFC any time soon or ever.

Rumble Johnson recently showed up to the weigh-ins for his Titan Fighting Championship bout tomorrow night 45 minutes late. Then collapsed after making weight... which was 205 pounds.

I think all those years of cutting ungodly amounts of weight to make 170 are catching up to him.

Its certainly not a bad card.. they've managed to secure some pretty good fighters that have some name value.

I've read that Tyrone Spong and Jerome Le Banner are also in talks with them ..

Yeah that is good news. Although the bald host has been almost as terrible lately. Did you see the show with Overeem? The one where he kept making comments under his breath and interrupting/talking over Reem? Then after the air was nice and tense he had the balls to (jokingly) tell Overeem he'd kick his ass before forcing him to play thumb war with him? Awkward...

It was one of the 2 Zuffa ppv's that never made it to a VHS or DVD release....the other was UFC 33, the first PPV from the Zuffa era. it was a complete nightmare. it ended up going past their required timeslot for the ppv. all 5 of the televised fights went to the distance....wish they would release it though, I've got a burned copy and Menne/Castillo was a war

So I just read that Ronda Rousey is nominated for four "Fighter of the Year Awards", fine... but one of them is for Fighter of the Year.

I don't dislike her but that is a massive stretch. That kind of extreme over-hyping/over-gratifying turns me sour on fighters.

Jones has a strong case but his resume of the fiscal year includes Machida, Evans, and Belfort. A decent enough list of names (it would be good but Belfort is bit iffy being a middleweight and all) but he was the heavy favorite in all of them. Nate Diaz has done nothing but make people stick their feet in their mouth by beating top guys that were all favorites over him. Relatively speaking I think Nate has had a better year.

Evans and Machida are essentially the number 2 and 3 light heavyweights in the world and former champions, even disregarding the Belfort fight that's a better resume than Cerrone and Miller.

What has Cormier done to be on that list? He's had one fight.

PS DAN HENDO HENDERSON has an issue with you putting both Rashad and Machida ahead of him. I'd love to argue for Rampage too on account of him beating Machida but that bullshit loss to Bader really fucks everything up deosn't it. Ugh I hate Bader.

Aldo might well be the most well rounded fighter in the world at the moment. Pound for pound GSP might not be able to take him down/keep him down, pound for pound Silva might not be able to knock him out and pound for pound not all that many people would be able to submit him.

He's a good fighter who has been fortunate enough to have been in an extremely weak division. After seeing him struggle against Mark Hominick and Kenflo I firmly believe Frankie Edgar is going to win a solid decision over him.

Mik I think Anderson has that honour as they have similar skillsets but you're still not wrong. I really don't see how you can describe a fighter who, since his WEC debut in 2008, has only ever had one round where he has even come close to being in danger (due to putting on too much weight and a poor weight cut for that particular fight, the same fight where he caused his opponent to grow a second head), whilst destroying all top competition, as "very beatable".

I'd have Mighty Mouse easily as the most beatable champ, especially considering he hasn't defended the title and his win was a very tight split decision. Next would be JDS, not a knock on him or his abilities but the nature of the division means that it's more likely one punch can end any fight and he still has a lot of tough competition he has yet to face. He has been dominant in his UFC career however so listing him as very beatable is harsh. No one has even come close to beating him.

Someone always comes up and blows these things apart though, a few years ago we all had BJ Penn as unbeatable at lightweight etc.

The division is only "weak" because Aldo has cleaned it out.

Hominick took a beating prior to the last five minutes of the fight (which looked like the picture above) mind you but he is also a middle-tier featherweight AT BEST. Kenflo found moderate success against Aldo by wrestling him. Kenny Florian.

I'm really not discrediting Aldo, but he is without shadow of a doubt the most over-rated fighter currently on UFC's roster. I regularly read how he'd storm through the 155 division if he wanted to. I shit you not I have even read a handful of people agreeing that he'd destroy Georges St-Pierre. The level at which is lauded to the moon is mind-boggling especially if you take into account how weak his division is in comparison to 155 and 170. I find it laughable how many people expect him to destroy Frankie. I don't even like Frankie Edgar but looking at it reasonably he should not be an underdog against Aldo. Look at the people Aldo has beaten and the people Edgar has beaten. The level in competition isn't even close.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. 2013 is the year that the Aldo myth is put to rest. I don't see what he could possibly have for Frankie Edgar.

Aldo is a fantastic fighter. I think he can be beaten if somebody's tactically on point, but even then they're relying on being good enough in 3 of five rounds to beat somebody with amazingly quick and versatile striking and incredible takedown defence. Edgar CAN do it, and that's why I'd rate his chances of losing higher than Jones, Silva and GSP, but that's only because Edgar has built one of the finest resumes in the sport and is a tough out for anybody with his boxing, transitions, heart and cardio. If he gets past Edgar, that boy keeps that belt for as long as he wants to cut that weight.

dos Santos is beatable in the sense that one clean punch at that weight from anyone can change the duration of the fight, as well as not being as proven once it hits the deck as other champions. He has an incredible run going and I'm picking him to beat Velasquez, but that's a close fight.

Cruz is awesome. Pretty telling that he's beat world champions from weight classes 125-145 (Faber, obviously at 145). Great talent. BUT. He's coming back from big knee surgery and his game is movement, Barao has savage leg kicks too and would shut him down. Wouldn't bet against him coming back better than ever, but I'd imagine Barao would be favoured should they fight, presuming Barao beats the interim challenger.

Mighty Mouse seems to be coming into his own but he doesn't hurt folk and CAN be hurt himself, which lends me to believe he'll get caught sooner rather than later. He only just beat McCall part 1, no other champion has recent close fights like that. Likewise the Benavidez fight.

He hasn't fought as weak competition as you are suggesting. You pass off Florian like he is now suddenly a bum after he lost to Aldo, the same Florian who you picked to defeat Aldo and who was highly regarded as a) a lightweight top contender and b) a legitimate threat to Aldo. He was "moderately successful" with his wrestling in the same way he was in the BJ Penn fight.. not very, because he still got handled, was comprehensively outstruck and lost. I assume Florian's plan was to wear down Aldo based on what he saw in the Hominick fight but Aldo clearly came into the fight in better shape. The Chad Mendes fight proved a lot, because he finally went up against a high level wrestler and was able to display some superb takedown defense.

I know I'm not going to change your opinion by this point and I don't want to get into a UI style back and forth that goes nowhere but I want to say my piece still. I don't care what other people say about him. I'm fairly comfortable having seen Aldo through his career to effectively assess his skills at this point, and you know me by now that I'm not going to be swayed by some bullshit popular opinion. And I strongly feel that I am not overrating his ability. Others might be to a mad extent however and I apologise for clowns like Bert claiming he will walk through everyone making you sour on him but as I said before your hate for this kind of thing, as much as you say you aren't, is making you not give credit for all the good things he does as you want to try and show he's overrated at every turn. You should instead enjoy that we get to watch a brilliant, exciting fighter like him!

Honestly I don't know what this myth you speak of is. And I am one Aldo fan who doesn't need selling on how tough the Edgar fight would be, I have been a believer in his abilities for a long time and I was one of the few giving Edgar credit before he beat BJ Penn. He's an elite fighter and it's a very close, tough fight. I know you hate him too so I am certainly higher on his ability than you

    Grover Teixeira

But honestly how is 'Glover' a cooler name than 'Rampage'? If you want to talk about boots to asses just imagine Silva vs GSP. GSP would be dead. Hendricks might be able to do it too.

I'm being pretty thick posting this, but is there a universal system for the numbers that correspond to certain strikes? When guys are hitting pads in both boxing and MMA training, and the trainer calls "2-3," they'll throw a cross-hook combo. Logic assumes...

    1. Jab
    2. Cross
    3. Hook
    4. Uppercut (?)

But I've heard numbers that go up to 9. Perusing Google, I haven't figured out the actual source of how this works. Anyone know?

Have to take into account both the right and left hands.

    Left jab = 1
    Straight right/cross = 2
    left hook = 3
    right hook = 4
    left upper = 5
right upper - 6 etc etc

It eventually gets into a) hooks to the body and b) straight punches to the body which I think brings it to 10.

I was wondering that this morning too. Depending on their weight cut, it seems that blood sugar, electrolytes, and all that other good stuff gets way out of balance. I imagine foods that help regulate blood sugar and aren't too heavy (whole grains, veggies, fruits, etc...) would be the food of choice, along with a careful rehydrating of water and/or Gatorade or some other fancy electrolyte/sodium drink.

Seems a lot of fighters do the double bacon cheeseburger + milkshake combo AFTER the fights though. I think Mighty Mouse said that in an interview.

Ratner also hopes to petition the ABC to reexamine the definition of a "grounded opponent" in relation to the protection it gives a fighter against absorbing both kicks and knees to the head.

Currently, the Unified Rules define a grounded opponent as "any fighter who has more than the just the soles of their feet on the ground (i.e. could have one shin or one finger down to be considered a downed fighter)." In recent years, this has led to fighters placing a hand on the mat to qualify for the extra protection offered a grounded opponent.

Ratner and White both believe such an approach undermines the spirit of the rule.

"We really believe this 'three-point stance rule,' where a fighter is just placing his hand on and off the mat so he won't get hit, needs to be addressed," Ratner said. "That's not what the rule is for. That has to be looked at."

Ratner said UFC officials hope to draw up proposed language that more clearly defines what should constitute a grounded fighter. The resulting proposal will be presented to the ABC this summer.

"I'm going to work with our attorneys on the language," Ratner said. "If you're going against the intent of the rule, and that's what's being done with some fighters, then we've got to change it. I'm going to get the right verbiage for it. That one is one that's come into play recently in the past couple years that needs to be changed."
This is absolutely fucking wonderful news. Looong overdue that someone does something about that shitty rule.

Seems like they could use the NFL as a model. Knee, elbow, and butt all could qualify as downed.

Anyone in need of a good cringe?

Seriously, it's two GIFs of a pretty disgusting looking injury. Does not involve blood.

I'm not sure what I love more-- the fact that the dude clearly gives almost zero fuck about the pain, or the ref with the quick "hey that might not be normal" point at it.

Right decision, as he's had several big injuries. Anytime the spinal column is injured multiple times you don't like to see them coming back, let him retire with his health intact and having only lost to world champions. He was a solid fighter, big power, and I'll forever be grateful for his pummeling of Mir.

    Lol.

I'd be irritated too. Schaub is a mong.

I think that guy looks like the mong in that GIF.

The guy is a BJJ master.. Schaub is just waiting for him to shoot. He mentioned in the presser that he wasn't used to people starting on their butts or something, so that probably threw him off some. I dunno.. I just thought the guy seemed pretty pissed at the presser while Schaub is just overwhelmingly satisfied. I think its funny.

Nick Diaz's manager on his new WAR MMA promotion (first event june 22)
“It’s a different model from the UFC’s model where Dana White is biggest star that the UFC has. That’s not how Nick is envisioning proceeding here.”

    Hmmm...

Should be interesting .. I guess they're gonna do it in a modified ring instead of a cage and grounded elbows aren't allowed.

I don't really get the elbows thing.. when his rep discusses it, he just talks about not wanting guys to stall and avoid action by laying on people.. but what the fuck does that have to do with elbows? If you're dropping elbows on someone, you're being pretty active ..

Fitch probably ought to shut up about money. I guarantee you he made far, far more than he drew over the years.

And I had heard Diaz was starting his own MMA promotion. Curious to see how it turns out but the no elbows on the ground rule is lame and clearly a rule put into place because ground elbows fuck BJJ specialists up.

Exactly. Elbows aren't a means to stall but baby punches to the stomach from your opponent's guard (which are allowed) definitely are.

Again, it is blatantly a rule put into place to protect mat fighters. What a joke.

Disallowing elbows to the head of a grounded opponent requires a fighter in top position on the ground to either seek to advance his position or to create distance to punch downwards, which is the same distance needed for the bottom position fighter to attack with submission attempts, or to attempt to get up.

Permitting elbows on the ground encourages holding and stalling.

    I completely disagree with that.

Permitting elbows does not encourage holding and stalling .. dropping elbows on someone isn't holding or stalling.. elbows stop fights all the time.

I can think of countless wrestlers that have held and stalled and grappled their way to victory without ever once throwing an elbow.

If you want to cater to BJJ that much, then start a BJJ promotion.. its MMA, no one discipline should get a direct advantage like that.

I understand wanting to eliminate stalling and holding, but I still don't see how the actual act of throwing elbows at someone, something that can end a fight, can be considered a stalling tactic. If I can knock you out doing it, how is that encouraging stalling or holding? Its encouraging a finish more than its encouraging stalling ..

Exactly. They need to outlaw submissions from one's back while they're at it, to even the playing field at least.

Kimura is right though, it's why Pride and Strikeforce didn't allow elbows on the ground. No ebows means the guy on top must create more space to throw power punches, which in turns gives the guy on bottom more opportunitys to sweep, reverse, go for subs or whatever.

It's kind of an age old debate in MMA. We're not talking power elbows from full posture being the problem here, it's when guys just hold the opponent down and kind of nudge the elbow in their face to create cuts and bruises. The tactic was popularized by guys like Matt Hughes, Sean Sherk and others back in the day.

That doesn't mean that every person who uses elbows is trying to stall though .. far from it.

Guys like Ben Saunders, Kenny Florian, and even Jon Jones are known for their devastating elbows on the ground .. I don't think its fair to just eliminate that part of a fighter's offense because the guy on the bottom can't wrestle.
