You can actually see skull in 3 or 4 of those photos.

Marvin Eastman rules because it's a well known knockout and an even more well known snapshot image of an immensely sickening cut.

Miguel Torres just tweeted this pic of a guy in his gym. It's of a really gruesome foot injury sustained in training. Do not click the spoiler tags if easily grossed out (seriously, it's hideous):

Its pretty ridiculous .. I mean, he stops the fight .. then just lets the guy run over and kick him in the face again. Like wtf was that?

How is Thiago Alves still a top 10 WW? Also how is Melendez ranked above Frankie Edgar? Melendez is a top 3 sure, but Edgar's got some much better names on his resume.

That is interesting, I would think most people have it as ->

    1. Frankie Edgar
    2. Gray Maynard
    3. Gilbert Melendez

And yeah, Alves is sort of living off past glory. He has one win in three years, and that was against Howard who lost three in a row and was then cut by the UFC.

I'd say Edgar should be number one but Maynard and Melendez are interchangable really. I'd have Jacare above Nate, Vitor a lot higher and Benavidez above Bowles.

And yeah the Alves ranking is bizarre. Gotta have MacDonald in the back end of that top 10 instead of him, but a lot of people could go in that spot, Woodley, Askren, even Ebersole.

If you have Edgar above him, then I"d think Maynard should be too because Maynard is the only person with a win over Edgar, not to mention being undefeated in the UFC with quality wins.

I'd have Edgar/Maynard at 1&2 until after their fight.. whoever loses would then drop to 3 and Melendez would slide to 2.

I'd have Miller ahead of Aoki & Alvarez too.. thats a joke to me. Alvarez has beaten Huerta, Neer, and Curran lately .. Aoki has beat Rich Clementi, Lyle Beerbohm, and Kawajiri.. I mean c'mon .. this is not even remotely the same level of competition as Miller/Edgar/Maynard at all. Not trying to be a UFC nut hugger here, but its just not the same level at all. I'd honestly have Aoki & Alvarez no higher than 7 or 8. Guilard, Guida, and Siver all have 4-5 fight win streaks with better wins than them.

Speaking of rankings, this is the first time in MMA history a Swede has been ranked top ten in the world by any publication. Many Swede's have been high on European rankings in the past but never a world ranking like this one.

Alves being ranked is crazy. I get that the Brenneman/Hendricks/Story triangle confuses things (all going 1-1 against each other), but you still have to rank them all over him surely? I'd have still had him top 5 after the GSP and Fitch fights because that's losing to the best, but the Story loss dropped him. The MMAth in that division is a bit nuts though.

His striking looked fairly sharp, for being Kimbo that is. That being said, nothing surprises me when it comes to Kimbo and Gary Shaw. Could definitely have been a fixed fight.

Hard to judge the talent of the guy he's fighting since he was only 0-1 pre Kimbo squash. In boxing, If you have any kind of promise, promotors will usually match you up with absolute cans until you are 25-0 or something, just to build the hype train and get big money fights. Losing your pro-debut is usually not a good sign.

All the best to Kimbo though, despite what many thinks he seems like a pretty decent guy.

This. I highly doubt that the backyard fights that Kimbo has made his name off are of the technical and tactical variety. Kimbo smash!!!!

Put him against a half-decent boxer that has been working his whole life on angles/footwork/technique, Kimbo eats the canvas.

The Shaw's will probably match him up against 10 bums before he fights anyone half-decent.

Well like you said, it's not until you get to the 20-0 or so before you actually start fighting elite guys who have similar records. The reality is, and I'm not sure how much boxing any of you actually follow, but the HW division is not filled with a million bad asses. Even when Tyson was in his prime, almost ALL of his highlight knockouts happened against guys who honestly had no business being in there with him. It wasn't until really after Tyson got out of prison where there were a decent amount of names with real talent in the HW division.

I don't expect Kimbo to be fighting even a guy like Holyfield who's 47 or so and still winning titles, but I see him having a Butterbean like career and Butterbean isn't some technical boxer with years of experience. The HW division in boxing is very similar to the HW division in MMA, you have a few gems, but everyone else no matter if there 20-7 or 1-3 all pretty much have an equal shot at winning.

HBO and Showtime do me wonders.

John Morgan (of MMAJunkie.com) remembers Shawn Tompkins..

"Shawn was someone who still had so much passion that it rubbed off on me. He was the type of guy who made me realize how lucky I am to do what I do for a living."

Does anyone know where I can find some affordable but still solid quality mats? I'd like to only spend around $100 if possible.

I'm thinking about buying a mat to put in my garage or basement when we move into our house to do some grappling.

Edit: I found some cheap mats on Amazon. They aren't made for MMA but I think they could work. 16 sq feet for $25.50. Can't be too bad considering we used to grapple on grass. I could use them in the basement to cover the floor and to work out on if they wouldn't work out for grappling on.

Those types of mats are pretty good, but they do slip a little bit on the bottom. They slip most on carpet, but also on concrete. Obviously if you pay more, you'll get ones that are non-slip on the bottom.

I'm perusing Amazon, but I can't find ones that would work better than those. I'd look in a place like Dick's Sporting Goods, then once you find what you want, you can find a cheaper price online.

If you don't care that they'll shift on the ground a little, then life is good, those will work fine. Another thing that might happen is if you use them for jumping/bouncing exercises in a plank position (like burpees), the "puzzle piece" design might start to be stressed and come apart. I work out every day and mine are still okay though.

Lots of people hate women's MMA.. a lot more hate gays if we're being honest. I never said anything about hating gays, however. Just pointed out that Frances is in fact gay.

Jamie Varner is keeping busy.. headlining Titan FC 20 on HDNet against Alonzo Martinez on September 23rd, here in KC.. and then headlining XFC 14 on HDNet against Nate Jolly on October 21st in Orlando.

    FUCKING COMCAST. I WANT HDNET!

In the department of “age old argument”, I feel Werdum is too high. I would rank Brock ahead of him and possibly Carwin.

LHW is just stacked man. Wow.

I’m not sure how you can separate Edgar and Meynard with someone. Those guys are about even in my eyes right now, there isn’t room for someone in between them.

Given those rankings, I would like to see Belfort/Bisping. I think Vitor would win.

I actually somewhat agree with the HW rankings. Inactivity is what really fucks it up, because hardly anyone in the top 10 has fought more than twice in the last 12 months.

So what time does MMA Live normally air on ESPN2? I accidentally caught the last 15 minutes of it tonight but I can't find it's normal schedule to save my life. I advanced my guide a week to see if it was the same time next week but it's not, I also looked on ESPN.com for it's schedule and it is nowhere to be found (fucking stupid).

Somebody help please, I want to set my DVR to record it from now on.

They show it on the Xbox Live version of ESPN 3. That's where I watch it. It's usually there on Friday. It's also an expanded version of the normal half hour show.

I rarely get a chance to watch it but I did last night, and ironically I was agreeing with a lot of what Chael Sonnen was talking. See, when the guy isn't an over the top douchebag he gives good insight.

Did anyone catch the show after it? They did a piece on Lee Murray, then some weird fight club with computer nerds.

EDIT: nevermind.. its on the DVR.

Like I said. He plays a heel character in his interviews and suckers people right in. Did you notice how much he was praising Anderson Silva?

Yeah, Chael Sonnen on ESPN is the real Chael Sonnen. A Swedish MMA reporter have met Chael several times and says that off camera he's a really cool, humble guy.

Chael told him that he has never made as much money as his doing right now because of his heel character though. Good for him if people buys into it. Ortiz, Shamrock and even Lesnar has made millions thanks to their pro-wrestling personas, it's smart business. Same goes for Ali back in the day.

What I find odd is that there are a lot of pro wrestling fans that bitch and moan about Sonnen all the time as if they don't understand what a heel character is. They'll cheer the wrestling heels that they like but they'll refuse to support an MMA fighter no matter how good he is if he's playing a "bad guy".

Like you said good for him if it's making him money because in the end I think having a bunch of nerds hate on you at every turn is worth the payday you get when they buy your fights.

Well .. also .. its ESPN. They probably told him that they don't take a bias on anything and they don't want him to either. Makes them look a little less legit when their analysts are clearly favoring someone instead of just breaking it down due to some personal hatred.

Pretty surprising, he's been there forever. I wonder where he'll go and how that will affect his fight with Lesnar, if at all. Some fighters can change camps and it makes them better, others have difficulty adjusting and try to mix training styles and it fucks them up. It'd be cool to see Overeem come over to the States and work with a popular gym.

Hey if you guys have a smartphone, you should check out the MMANewsArena app.. it links like 2-3 dozen mma news/video sites together in one little app. Its pretty awesome.

Seriously.. this app is the shit. It has literally every MMA website out there.. Junkie, Sherdog, MMAWeekly, MMAFighting, Cagepotato, Bloodyelbow, and about 30+ more.. along with a bunch of video sites, MMALinker, MMA-core, etc.. and even a section for Ariel Helwani interviews.. all in one nice little, easy to use/navigate app. It's pretty cool. I've been geeking on it all morning at work.. I managed to get a little bit of work done too.

Arron Asham of the Pittsburgh Penguins should definitely think of combative sports if he ever finds himself out of a job ala Donald Brashear.

MMA gets some good publicity for once (I wish I could embed this).

Very strange weigh-in/staredown for some upcoming M-1 fight.

If Grish is on, I'm not watching. Too bad it was a pretty fun show.

You're cheating yourself. I thought he did well. He's done his homework and comes off legitimate instead of cheesy like he did in WWE.

I absolutely hate Grisham, he's the most annoying announcer since Joe Fowler. And doing his homework or not he still has that damn voice that I can't stand.

Sonnen being on is almost enough to change my mind though..

Ah, Chael Sonnen, the Flavor Flav/Bret Michaels/New York/Real and Chance of the MMA world. One thing I ever heard this guy say that was good was the time he said Forrest Griffin needs to have more than just a sparring partner and friend in his corner when fighting top guys like Shogun. 100% agreed with that.

Ya never know about Grisham, he could be a huge MMA fan and just wound up in the WWE for his love of pro wrestling or wanting to get experience to one day be an announcer for the UFC or something along those lines. What sucks about Grisham in the WWE and guys like him is that Vince thinks Michael Cole is the man, and he has these young guys follow Cole which is why you get all these idiots who just can't call a match for shit. It took Cole 15 years to be interesting behind the booth and it had nothing to do with his commentating skills as much as it did the gods blessing the WWE with Bryan Danielson because without him Cole is nothing.

I just wish he wouldn't talk through his nose.

Got done watching part 1 of the show and it was ok. Part 2 is 'not available anymore' for some reason. Will check back later..

Nice little read, Bas Rutten explaining the Overeem situation. I know some might discredit gossip, but this is Bas, who doesn't believe Bas!?!?!!?!

    AWESOME !!!!!

MMAJunkie.com, after being recently bought by USA Today Media Group, will begin airing a weekly magazine-style MMA news show on SPIKE TV, beginning in January. It will simply be called, MMAJunkie Live, and will feature Gorgeous George and Goze Garcia, along with John Morgan (the mmajunkie.com staff and radio hosts) ..

This is seriously awesome. I know there are tons of MMA sites out there, but I completely consider MMAJunkie and MMAFighting to be far ahead of the rest of the pack.. which would explain why those are the only two that have recently been bought by large media groups.

George, Goze, and John Morgan really deserve this though. They're so good at what they do and are really great guys who care about their listeners and have actual friendships with a lot of them. It's very rare to even comment on one of their facebook pages and not get a response.. they're good guys and they deserve to be able to really do this show for a living.

The only two mma websites I use are junkie and mmafighting. I used to watch the mmahour on a regular basis with Gorgeous George and Goze. I really liked how each caller had their own personalized music.

I've stopped watching for the mmahour, though.

One-armed fighter Nick Newell will be fighting tomorrow at XFC 15.

Kind of curious to see how that goes down.

That guy has to be terrible. With one arm, you can't defend your head and body on one side. You can't perform most submissions. You can't set up many combos. You honestly would need to be a PHENOMENAL wrestler and grind out a decision.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if he loses to a one-armed guillotine?

Against the level he should be fighting against he's undefeated with a lot of his wins coming within the first couple minutes of rn 1. 5-0 I believe. Check him out on youtube, dude is in shape, and he's not exactly missing an entire arm, it's like half of his forearm down. Like I said, go check him out and you will be impressed as fuck considering his "handicap".

The guy is 5-0 with a few submissions via arm-bar. I watched one match on youtube and he won with a rear-naked choke. The arm that was amputated was the one used to choke the guy, too. Greatness.

I watched one he finished by rear naked choke. He'll beat the fuck out of people with that stump, too. He throws all sorts of strikes with it.

There's this one-armed kickboxer who's pretty damn good too. I actually think his nickname is 'The One Armed Bandit'.
