Oh goddamnit I missed the Christmas special? All I have are 4 15 minute things. Goddamn BBC probably titled it something funny so my DVR didn't snag it. Guess it's huntin time.

There's a new Doctor on the way.

    Quote Originally Posted by Guardian
Peter Capaldi has announced that he will be leaving the cult sci-fi show Doctor Who after the 2017 Christmas special.

The actor, who has been the 12th person to play the role, first played the time-traveling character in 2013 and his decision to leave coincides with the exit of show-runner Steven Moffatt.

“One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best,” he said during an interview on BBC Radio 2. “From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been cosmic.”

Capaldi will return as Doctor Who for a final season before his joint swansong with Moffatt in December. In an official statement, Moffatt referred to it as “the best job I’ll ever have”.

While the recent Christmas special was a ratings hit for the BBC, the previous seasons suffered a dramatic loss in viewership. In an interview last October, Capaldi blamed the decision to show the family-focused show at a later time slot, saying the broadcasting company had “undoubtedly” taken the series for granted.

“It does frustrate me,” he said. “If you’re going to have a family show, I think you have to build up a little ritual around it – and that ritual usually starts with having it on at the same time [every week]. Even I didn’t know what time it was on because it got later and later and later.”

Capaldi’s first role away from the series will be a return to another franchise as he rejoins the cast of Paddington for a sequel out later this year.

They are turning out the doctors now. Do you think they might pull the string for a female doc?

I really hope not, unless it's someone on a par with Maria Gomez and that level of quirkiness.

Well that was quite enjoyable. Refreshing to have a companion who hasn't died (twice) or has a crack across space and time in their bedroom, but just someone new and fun. Looks like the vault and its contents will be the overarching theme this series. Wonder if it has anything to do with

Watched it, liked it a lot more than I thought I would. In the trailers Bill looked annoying, but that was far from the case.

    The teasers and HOLYMCFUCKBALLSWHAT!!!

    Which bit of the trailer?

There were at least three WTBF moments that I counted

Good episode again today (I thought Bill wasn't a student?) with David Suchet in fine form, but I feel with the twist at the end it would have been better suited for David Tennant's doctor ("I am so, so sorry").
And now we know it's not a What in the vault, but a Who...

I rarely post in these forums, but I've been enjoying this season so much, I thought I'd put my two cents in. This is probably my favorite one with Capaldi. It hasn't been perfect, but there's just something about how everything's come together that's been very satisfying. I love this cast. My favorite in a long time. Bill and Nardole complement Capaldi so well, I wanted to see them together for another 2 seasons. Looks like that's not to be.

It sucks that Capaldi is leaving after the Christmas special. I'm growing tired of the rapid turnaround with the Doctors. Why can't they keep one around for longer than 3 seasons? (At least Tenant got that abbreviated 4th Season with the TV movies) Just as you get invested in an actor, they're gone. I read that one of the reasons might be to give the new Show Runner a fresh start with a new Doctor, but I don't know if had anything to do with it. I wouldn't be surprised if Capaldi felt like he'd done everything he could with the character. I think they let him down with some of the scripts and could have given him more to sink his teeth into. He was the perfect actor to peel away the layers of the Doctor and see what's really underneath. They did that with some episodes, but they seemed to have given that up for more crowd pleasing stories.

Not been overly into this new series as at times it seemed to plod along... But lasts episode was good.

Felt like they could have done without previewing it mind. Took the edge off it.

The preview for the week before revealed most things of the episode, which was quite annoying. It would have been great for all those surprises.

Yes definitely thought the bbc preview even at the start of the series sort of killed that a bit flat.

Though if the next episode ends with them waking up from the Monks virtual reality again I'm gunna explode with rage. It won't but..... You never know.

Also I'm not a big Matt Lucas fan... But he's been quite good throughout.

No issue with a female Doctor but I'd probably have gone older. I liked the Gillian Anderson suggestion.

    Maybe I'm missing the controversy...
Doctor Who is literally a shape-shifting alien that regenerates in different forms...
It's been established time lords can and have come back as a different gender...

The Sun and Daily Mail are predictably responding with naked photos of Jodie. There's an article in the Mail asking where all the male TV leads have gone in the supposedly ultra-PC era and whether we'll get a female Bond in the future. It's so staggeringly out of touch and stupid that you'd think it was a parody if you didn't know where it came from. It uses recent events in Game of Thrones (!) as evidence that men are at the bottom of the pecking order. I'm already dreading how they'll frame it when we get another male Doctor.

Saw that the other day, I like that they’ve tied it back to so many classic ‘Whos’

I’m genuinely interested to see Bradley Walsh in the new series too, I think he could be a really good addition.

We always watch it ‘live’ on Christmas Day, although we tend to then rewatch it when the kids have gone to bed and often the next day if we’ve slept through it twice...

Although we’ll have already seen it this year

They’ve got a dalek and the tardis on the red carpet for the screenings, how cool is that!

    I did.

In all honesty one of the very best, David Bradley is excellent as is Mark Gatiss and Capaldi is outstanding, he has two big speeches and both are excellent.

The ending is well done, the twists are good (one is obvious but done well) and there is a reasonably good fist at preemptive the regeneration.

Almost 14 years since I started this thread. Also 4-5 hours to download 350mb torrent, was my net speed shit back then or was that the norm. I was new to torrents back then.

I quite liked it, I loved Bradley I think he’ll be a nice addition, but it just didn’t feel right somehow.

Sadly James only lasted around half before he went to bed, too much change to something that’s been a huge part of his life since he was 3 or 4, I’m sure it’s lovely to have a role model for girls, and as a father of two I’m all for that, but they’ve taken one away from ASD kids in the process.

And I really didn’t like the fact they had to make the security guard a grandfather then kill him, but much for kids that when it served no purpose at all.

I ask this question in true sincerity Rip so don't take it in a bad way at all, but I'm truly missing how it takes away a role model from ASD kids.

I thought it was a great intro episode. Although I agree that the making the security guard a grandfather was unnecessary.

Very stylised. I liked that they made me give a shit about the companions. The storyline seems obvious this season, but I like the idea of the Doctor searching for the Tardis. Jodie was great as The Doctor. I liked her I am the Doctor speech for the most part. Not as good as David or Matt's speech, but better than Peter's speech which for the life of me I will never understand why they went with possible murderous Doctor for him.

None taken, the Doctor has always been a bit of a talisman for the ASD community, with especially the last two incarnations almost playing as quite obviously neuro diverse, change of any kind is hard for ASD kids but they’ve generally accepted regeneration however this one, to flip the gender, has just been too much.

I enjoyed it. The bad guy wasn't cheesy and quite a believable story. I don't think parts of it hit the right mark for me... like the security guard as rip mentioned... and the very brief/throwaway "sister" part.

I have zero issue with it being a woman, makes no odds to me, look how awesome Missy was as the master. Didn't think some of the dialogue was very poignant or dramatic. It seemed a bit rushed in places. Like when he kicks Tim Shaw off the crane.. and she says "you had no right..." never expanded upon and as a fan you know why but for others might seem odd.

The one thing that annoyed me was them ending up in space...... but then 30sec later you have them all fine in the previews... why? Why throw that in at the end? If it was for drama, it doesn't work. If it's meant to be funny then.... I don't know. Seemed misplaced.

Overall I await the rest of them, people complain but I enjoyed most of cappaldi so hopefully this is as good.

First time viewer and I enjoyed it. Love Jodie Whittaker a bit and I've always loved Bradley Walsh. But, I didn't love it and my Mrs wasn't keen enough to now want to watch episode 2.

So really, I need to decide whether to go on with it or leave it there. Too much good stuff on TV and not having enough time is the problem.

I’ve watched it again this morning while the Mrs was at a meeting and the kids at school and sadly I think it weakens in re-watching there are too many off tone bits that feel like they serve no purpose other than to make it obvious that this is a new Who with a new time on a new day with a new head and a new Doctor with a new ‘grown up’ feel.

The guard bit grates more each time, as does the sister, the death of the grandmother, the dispraxia, the cancer, the throw away line on the crane and the achingly obvious attempt to be so correct.

I could be wrong but my guess is it will win a fair few new fans but lose more of the old as it just doesn’t feel like Dr Who, hopefully when she finishes re-booting that’ll change.

Going forward I’m with James, I’ll watch it and as long as I don’t think of it as Dr Who it’ll probably be fine.

There’s positives, I loved Bradley more this time, he’s a better actor than he has credit for and I’m looking forward to seeing him over the coming weeks, I liked Jodie when she wasn’t trying to be ‘the Doctor’ and was just going for it, I like the new theme too.

Not much issue with Jodie, although I do wonder which charity shops also offer ear-piercing. The crux is going to be the relationship and roles of the companions. With a male doctor (since the reboot) there was a strong female character with undefinable powers/destiny (Rose, Martha, Clara, Bill), while the males were inept and/or unwilling to go along (Mickey, Adam, Rory). Continuing this while making Yaz the voice of reason could be too much.
Also, love the new theme music, very reminiscent of Davidson/C.Baker’s time.

Start with Eccleston then work through, honesty he gets a bad rep but The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances are two of the best episodes of the new run

I got bored about halfway through. I caught most of the 'BBC Ultimate Watch Party' crap beforehand, which tried all-too-hard to be 'correct' with the pronouns at the expense of getting potentail new viewres caught up on what's come before. I like Whittaker, like the idea of a female Doctor, like the outfit (I also noticed the out of nowhere piercing), but I missed having a TARDIS to establish herself in the first episode, and it's getting that these first episodes are becoming a bit samesy in the way they show the Doctor confused at their new look and the after effects of regeneration. I liked the villain, even though it was probably a one-off... for once I'd actually like to see a classic Who villain right out of the gate with a new Doctor.

I don't mind the Tardis being this season's quest. Leaves open the idea of someone using it for evil purposes. I am thinking the villian will show up again. They made a bit of a deal about how the pretty are in stasis.

I’d probably go with David Tennant’s first season. Accessible, fun and a great two part finale. Just keep in mind that it’s a family show primarily so you’re going to have some really daft and cheesy episodes and acting which varies dramatically in quality. I prefer his second season - if you’re looking for an individual episode that is a really well-told Doctor Who sci-if story, then “Blink” from that season is a must. The two part “Human Nature/Family of Blood” before it is also excellent. In fact the second half of that season starting with those episodes is really good.

I enjoyed the Matt Smith run but there was a smugness and self-indulgence about the plotting and characterisation towards the end. Overly-convoluted twists and an attitude of “just go with it” whether they made sense or had a truly satisfying pay-off - the same problem has crept into Sherlock. To this day, I still haven’t watched a single minute of Capaldi’s run because I just fell out of love with the formula. What are people’s thoughts on that era?

The long form story of Capaldi and Missy - which is essentially Capaldi's entire run - is the best the show has been for me. Capaldi is my favourtie Doctor, there's a pathos to his performance that I've only ever felt Tennant got close to previously.

Capaldi was superb, head and shoulders above the rest of the new Doctors, even with massively inconsistent writing.

His Christmas finale was damn near perfect for me.

    It were bloody cracking.

After all the moans about the last season being too po faced, they went full on in the other direction and had a load of fun with it. Loved the reveal, no idea where it's going, I'm in.

Guess I must be sexist as I quit watching before Jodie took over. Not quit per say but was waiting for the season to get done and binge it. I was intrigued to see it though. I will get around to it eventually.
