    Speaking of Beasley...

DaMarcus Beasley was injured today playing for PSV against Twente Enschede in a Dutch league match. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, but of greater concern was the knee injury suffered by the U.S. national team star.

Beasley was injured near the end of the game and was stretchered off. Early reports from Holland after the game suggested that PSV is hopeful that Beasley might be able to play again in a week, and that the injury was not as serious as previously feared.

Reyna and Lewis are out for the next two qualifiers (and the England friendly) and still no definitive word on Beasley's readiness.

PS: Adu says he wants to be in the EPL within the next three years.

I saw that about the players and posted about Reyna and Beasley in the Asylum.

Missed that about Adu but I am not surprised really.

Does it surprise anyone that Freddy wants to go to Europe? I'll just hope beyond all reason that Newcastle or Sevilla land him.

MLS in St. Louis? Seems we made the list of cities that could get a team in 2007. I would love to see it happen but I doubt we get it without promising a stadium which I doubut we will commit too.

Adu is on the roster for a U-20 game against Canada. I wonder if he will make the roster and go to youth world championships next month.

Blackburn's Jemal Johnson is expected to be named in that U-20 squad.

Only played a few times for the first team but looks an exciting prospect. Bags of pace. 'He could catch pigeons that lad' we say over here.

Yeh, he's only a little fella. He ran Colchester ragged though in the Cup and scored with a great finish. I subscribe to RoversWorld so I can watch reserve highlights and stuff - he scores for fun at the level, all types of goal.

Only foreign professional named for the game against Canada was some keeper playing in France. That names sounds familiar though. Probably in the pool that I was looking at yesterday.

    Cool.

Can't wait to see the roster.

MISL finals start tonight on ESPN2. Steamers are out but the second leg is still going to be played in St. Louis next week and I have vouchers for free tickets so I may go considering I doubt they are sold out or anything.

So the Revolution are the only unbeaten team left, DC's certainly a top team, Adu is streaking, the two teams combined for 14 goals their last two meetings...

...and there appears about a dozen people there.

    Wonderful.

Adu and Gaven scored to lead the U-20s to a 2-1 win over Canada. College kids head back to camp while the pros head back to their teams and the roster for the tournament will be named at the end of the month after the camp breaks.

Ching is out 4-6 weeks with a strained hamstring. That sucks. Another US guy going down with qualifiers coming up.

Here is an article about the upcoming match against the Galaxy and the Quakes. Donovan will be facing his old team in a game between bitter rivals.

And Kerry Zavagnin is replacing the injured Pablo Mastroeni for the game against England.

Bit upset that the LA/SJ game isn't on nationally, but what a good game between the Revs and Metros.

1-1 at the half, Metros go a man down about halfway through the second, manage the shorthanded goal late for the tremendous upset, but no it's Twellman in the 89th with his second of the game as the Revs stay unbeaten with the 2-2 tie.

Veddy interesting article from US Soccer's Center Circle "e-magazine" (c'mon kids, it's a newsletter)... technically called the Top Ten Under Ten, it's a list of players with less than ten MNT caps that have "a chance to make the biggest impact for the U.S. over the rest of the final round of qualifying or even possibly make the final World Cup roster."

Not going to quote it, as it's a bit long without being squashed in the quote box...

    1. Eddie Johnson (8)
1,3,1,1,0,1,0,1. This isn’t binary code (the computer nerds surely picked up on the 3). It’s the number of goals Eddie Johnson has scored in each of the eight games he’s played in for the MNT. Add them up and that’s eight goals in eight games. That’s a goal a game. Even better, he’s scored a goal just under every 70 minutes he’s on the field. At this point, this really isn’t even a question, is it? In the past six months, E.J. is the best U.S. player under 10 caps as he’s emerged as the breakout player everyone was saying he could be during his stints with the youth programs. Heck, one might argue he's the best player EVER for the U.S. before their 10th cap. The likelihood of Eddie continuing this strike-rate is probably slim, but until he cools off the FC Dallas striker is one of the most dangerous players on the squad every time he steps on the field. Let’s hope we see a lot of ones, twos and threes behind Johnson’s name in the game reports as the U.S. continues on its World Cup qualifying path.

    2. Clint Dempsey (5)
Eddie Johnson’s MNT career may have skyrocketed once he got called up, but his national team development was in the works for a long time as he spent time with the U-17s, U-20s, U-23s and a couple years in MLS. Clint Dempsey was a different story. Hardly in the youth national team picture, Dempsey was one of the last players picked for the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship and spent more time freestyle rapping on the bus then he did actually playing against international competition in UAE. A month later, buried behind the giant shadow of Freddy Adu in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, Clint was picked by New England in the first round to hardly any fanfare. He must not have liked the quiet as he quickly made noise in MLS, winning Rookie of the Year, which was enough to earn him a cap in the final match of 2004 for the U.S. Men. Four more caps this year (including two starts) and a blazing start to the MLS season explains why the Texas native is near the top of the list.

    3. Oguchi Onyewu (4)
Players may shy away from Gooch due to his size and broadcasters may do the same due to the pronunciation of his name, but Bruce can’t help but be drawn to the former U-17 player’s ability. A big (6-4), solid defender that is good in the air and has the ability to get forward and be a scoring threat on set pieces, Onyewu got his first cap as a reserve against Panama in October of 2004 and has since started in three matches. The biggest defender for the U.S., Gooch could become one of the central cogs on the backline if he continues to develop his game and show Bruce he can hold his own with some of the best strikers in the world. And to boot, his given name, Oguchi, means “God fights for me.” I mean, could the U.S. get a better 12th man?

    4. Conor Casey (6)
Conor Casey has played in six games with the U.S. Men – all starts. While he has yet to play in 2005, getting the six caps in ’04 and starting every match says something about the impact Bruce thinks Casey can have up front. A strong and tough player, a number of people are looking to the FSV Mainz forward to be the replacement for Brian McBride, a player that can be the target man to win headers and play well with his back to the goal. Conor didn’t get a lot of playing time this year with struggling Mainz to help bolster his credibility for a recurring spot on the MNT, but his past performances demonstrated what he can contribute down the road and you can bet he’ll be in the mix.

    5. Taylor Twellman (8)
Taylor Twellman has been part of the U.S. Men since 2002, but he’s still sitting two below 10 caps. Why? Injuries (and maybe the fact he has yet to score for the U.S.). He had five caps in ’03 before being sidelined with a concussion and multiple facial fractures in August and then diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot two months later. Due to the injuries, Twellman took a bit of a step back and now it’s just a matter of fitting him back in with a number of other talented forwards who are also showing their worth to Bruce. He did have two memorable caps last year, winning a header against Mexico that put goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez off-balance, allowing Eddie Pope to bury the game-winner and getting his first World Cup qualifying appearance against Jamaica. So will he be back soon? The answer is a resounding yes. Bruce knows Twellman is a powerful attacker with an innate ability to find the back of the net, so no one needs to worry (you hear that Wynalda?).

    6. Brian Ching (8)
With the equalizing goal in the first qualifying game of the semifinal round against Jamaica and the game-winner in the following match against El Salvador, Brian Ching provided the U.S. with four crucial points to begin their path to the 2006 World Cup. Not too shabby for a guy who had to battle through injuries in ’03 to get back into the national team fold and before the tension-packed qualifiers had just two caps (both as a reserve) in friendlies against Wales and Poland. He’s showing he doesn’t always need Landon by his side this year with San Jose as he’s notched four goals and two assists in seven games to increase his career stats to 23 goals and nine assists in 55 games played (unfortunately, he just suffered an injury and will be out for awhile). With the wealth of experience he has with MLS and now in qualifying with the MNT, it’s hard to believe Ching is still under 10 caps.

    7. Pat Noonan (5)
While keeping tabs on Clint and Taylor, Bruce couldn’t miss Noonan who had a remarkable sophomore campaign with the Revolution notching 30 points on the year (11 goals and eight assists) to share the 2004 MLS Budweiser Scoring Championship with MetroStars midfielder Amado Guevara. Noonan got his first cap for the MNT back in March of 2004, but didn’t start making a regular contribution until a year later. He’s played in the last four games, starting two, and has shown his ability to contribute at this level, notching his first career goal in his first-ever start against Colombia. With his ability to attack from either wing, he could be a useful tool for Bruce moving forward.

    8. Eddie Gaven (2)
Despite other U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team players like Freddy Adu and Jonathan Spector getting a bit more of the headlines in the U.S. and around the world, if you know the game, you know Eddie Gaven is the engine that will drive the team at the World Youth Championship. Called “The Man,” “The Stud,” and “The Catalyst” by players, coaches and media alike when he’s with the U-20s, Gaven has one of the brightest young futures of any American player. Pretty remarkable when you consider the 19-year-old midfielder can’t see (hair in his eyes) and is mute (really, have you ever heard him talk?). We kid, we kid. Then again, Eddie doesn’t need to talk off the field because he does it on the field with his consistent and confident play. He’s already gotten a taste of the full Men’s team with a few camp call-ups, two reserve performances against Poland in 2004 and Colombia this year, and in less than three years in MLS has been named one of the best players in the league. As of now, the MetroStars midfielder is concentrating on leading the U-20s past Argentina, Germany and Egypt, but it won’t be long until Bruce Arena comes up on his caller ID.

    9. Chad Marshall (2)
After leading the U.S. Under-20s to a remarkable fifth-place finish in UAE, Marshall moved onto the MLS and quickly became a fixture in the Crew’s back four. Marshall might not be as flashy as his two MLS Rookie of the Year candidates Clint Dempsey and Freddy Adu (Dempsey ended up winning the award), but he was probably the most consistent contributor of the three. A tall, strong defender, Marshall started 27 of the 28 games he appeared in after getting his first appearance in mid-April and was integral in helping the Crew to an 18-game undefeated streak. He got his first call-up to the MNT earlier this year and in his first appearance against Colombia he showcased his ability to be a goal scoring threat (remind anyone of Alexi Lalas?), heading home a cross. Next for Chad is a possible qualifier as he continues to gain confidence at the highest level.

    10. Jonathan Spector (1)
Spector may be one of the most intriguing of the young players making a push for time on the full team, partly because not many people have seen him play. By now, everyone knows his astounding story of moving from forward to defender while with the U-17s and then getting signed by Manchester United, but only a few can truly say they’ve seen the Arlington Heights native play enough on the defensive line to know exactly how good he can be (seeing a few Man U games in the beginning of the year doesn’t count). So, what are we going by? Well, if Sir Alex Ferguson is keeping him around instead of letting him go (Man U squashed a potential loan to Blackburn after injuries made their backline thin) and U.S. U-20 head coach Sigi Schmid has penciled him in as a starter for the World Youth Championship despite only being with the team once in the past two years, he must be doing something right.

Seems that the Gov. of New Jersey was very upset the other day when England played Columbia and they didn't play our national athem. We didn't even play. We just hosted. That and it followed standard protocal for international soccer games played in neutral countries. Rather stupid to get upset about it.

The U-20's beat Argentina 1-0. Spector left the game hurt. Adu mised a PK. But they still won behind the goal by Chad Barrett.

U-20's draw with Germany today and stayed tied with them for first place in the group. They play Egypt next who has not won a game yet.

Chelsea will play DC United and Milan will play the Chicago Fire. Chelsea and Milan will also play each other twice. This happens in July. The DC United/Chelsea game will be on ESPN2.

And of course Fulham will be playing the MLS All-Stars in the All-Star game at the end of July.

Probably right. Not like the MLS teams really have a chance anyway. I will support them but I am not holding my breath for a win.

The U-20's won the group of death after beating Egypt today. They finished with 7 points which was one better than Argentina. They have yet to concede a goal as well. So they are through to the knockout rounds and looking good.

U-20's lost in the round of 16 to Italy. After leading 1-0 at half they lose 3-1.

Eddie Lewis signed with Leeds and the roster for the Gold Cup has been named and some of the European based players are skipping it.

Once again no national coverage of Gold Cup games. Telefutura gets the games.

And according to ussoccer.com the game against Mexico in September in World Cup Qualifying will be on ESPN Classic.

Any New England fans around these parts? Looks like we've got one of their defenders, Avery John, over at Southend on trial.

Just throwing this out there for tomorrow's game...

Win or tie, we go through as the group winner and face the third place team from Group C (could be Jamaica, South Africa, or Mexico).

Lose, we go through as the group runner-up and face the winner of Group A (Panama or Honduras [outside shot at Trinidad/Tobago via goal differential]).

Look at those potential opponents... I'm not saying anything; just saying...

PS: Conor Casey tore his ACL and sprained his MCL. One has to assume whatever outside shot he had at making the WC roster is all but gone.

Two other things in play... on the one hand, we've never (ever... eeeeeveeerrrr...) not won a Gold Cup group match... not even tied... all wins... that's the kind of thing you'd like to keep going...

But on the other hand, like half the team is carrying a yellow, and I assume the suspension from a second yellow carries over to the next round even though single yellows don't. That's even more reason for Arena to play the scrubs...

Considering I don't speak Spanish and I hate closed captioning the All-Star game is what I will be watching tonight. Granted I will try to catch the rest of the Gold Cup matches though.

Considering we're already through, I say start the same lineup that faced Cuba, and let the legit starters rest up for the quarterfinal. Which was probably Bruce's plan all along, given how many games were to be played in only a few days.

Galaxy face Real Madrid on Monday. They will be without Donovan and maybe two other players still playing in the Gold Cup. Galaxy are struggling and are going to get their asses handed to them with or without Donovan there.

Yeah the Galaxy lost 2-0 to Real Madrid. I expected worse really. They scored early and then late and their keeper had a really good save at one point. Other than that no surprises here.

Anyway so who is going to watch Chelsea thump DC United next week on ESPN or ESPN2. Whatever channel it is that has the game.

The Columbus Crew beat Fulham 2-1. McBride played against his former team.

AC Milan beat the Fire 3-1 though.

And tonight is DC vs Chelsea.

DC lost 2-1. Looked pretty good at times but yeah in the end they were outclassed. Adu had some good touches.

MLS All-Stars beat Fulham 4-1. So Fulham comes in and loses to the Crew and the All-Stars.

DC had a ton of chances to win. Actually, the Fire did moreso. That game could have easily been 3-1 the other way.

Yeah they were saying that the Fire had chances during the All-Star game.

As far as DC. Yeah they had chances to at least draw even but overall they were outclassed. Chelsea had chances to make the score bigger and really controled a lot of the second half.

DC really did look good for sure especially scoring first but in the end Chelsea is just a better team with more depth that used it.

Checking on the US Open Cup tournament since there was 4th round games and nice to see that two USL teams have made it to the quaterfinals after defeating MLS teams.

In fact Xtreme Rebel's Thunder have taken out two MLS teams now.

Now LA faces San Jose, KC faces the Thunder, Dallas faces DC, and Fire takes on the Rhinos in the quarterfinals.

Hopefully it will be an all USL final. We just have to get through KC and the winner of LA/SJ.

On another Thunder note forward Melvin Tarley is now the leading scorer in the Open Cup with 6 goals (4 last night). It also gives the Liberian forward 7 in the past 2 games since head coach Buzz Lagos announced his impending retirement.

I don't see it being an all USL final but you never know.

The Rhinos have to beat Chicago and then probably Dallas. Probably not an easy task.

The Thunder have to beat KC then probably the Galaxy. Again not an easy task but I guess there is chance at it happening.

MLS has not won all the titles since joining the tournament.

dallas has had to go into extra time in both of their games so far, which may or may not mean anything. Last year the Thunder knocked out the Galaxy before losing to the earthquakes, again may or may not be much. This year's Thunder squad are playing much better than last year's at this time. If Tarley keeps netting 2 per game (as he is averaging now) it'll be hard for KC to stop us.

Reyna returns for the next qualifier as the squad is named. Hurting on defense right now thanks to injury and what not.

Twellman is on the squad. He is playing well in MLS right now.

Article saying Oguchi Onyewu may be headed to Manchester United. Why would they want him. Not knocking him or anything but I just didn't see him as one of the players to head to the Premiership any time soon.

Seems that MLS is going to lose two of the best players in the league after the season.

Carlos Ruiz and Amado Guevara are not happy for various reasons and probably won't be back.

World Cup games will be shown live. Which I figured they would be. They have been showing them all live the last few times.

Anyway the thing I liked when I read it was the fact they plan on showing more Champion League matches.

I only watched part of the game here and there but I am still trying to figure out how we did not score like 10 goals.

Anyway a win against Mexico clinches a spot in the World Cup with three games to spare. If all games that day end in draws we clinch a spot. We can not finish worse than fourth which is the playoff spot at this point.

Convey got two yellows yesterday and will sit out against Mexico. Shame really considering he finally seemed to be back to his oldself and playing well. Mexico will be without their captian as well.

They didn't score ten goals because they have absolutely no ability to finish. It's been that way for years and is the type of thing that will get them crushed in the Cup. Donovan was absolutely pitiful, and it highlights the fact that he should play out of midfield.

I'm starting to think Eddie Johnson wasn't benefitting from being in the right spot at the right time, but from being the only person on the team who can finish.

Between Donovan, O'Brien, and Reyna, we have a midfield that should be able to spring guys a half dozen times a game. But with no one to finish, it's a team with lots of chances, lots of brilliant passes, and nothing to show for it.

Well we need to work on that then.

Anyway the US site is now saying that the channel for the game against Mexico is TBD.

I see that college football is on ESPN and ESPN2 which is why I guess it was going to be on ESPN Classic. Can't cover a National team game where we could clinch a spot in the World Cup against a bitter rival over watching USC kill Hawaii or Georgia kill Boise St. followed by Georgia Tech vs. Auburn.

Anyway it seems that someone woke up to the fact the game should be on something besides ESPN Classic. Now watch is just be on a tape delay or something.

At the very least, it will definitely be on one of the spanish stations, what with it being vs. Mexico.

The odd thing is, I just checked Google News to see if there was any sort of release or news tidbit on the change, and not only is there not one, the newest relevant article is a press release from the Columbus Crew (the game is at Crew Stadium, so one presumes they know what's going on) that still says ESPN Classic.

So what's going on with the Madrid game? ESPN2 was advertising a MLS versus Real Madrid game for next (at least I assume next) Tuesday on the scroller during the game, but I can't find anything about it. I mean, I heard the rumors it was gonna happen, but you'd think it would be front and center on the MLS site.

    Weird.

So ESPN does not have it listed on their schedule on any channel that day at this point and time. Well at least not during the time the game is going on.

USsoccer.com has it listed as TBD.

And the Crew are saying it will be on ESPN Classic.

    Story from ESPN.

Don't see a listing for the game on tv though.

The story on the Crew's site also says Telemundo. Too bad I don't have that station.

Article kind of blasting the MLS for sending a select team to play Real Madrid next week. Made some good points actually. I didn't realize the next round of the US Open Cup is on Wednesday. I was wondering about the players like Donovan that has played extra games with the national team and if they would go. Donovan will not play next week over in Spain by the way.

Article on the TV issues for the US/Mexico game. Of course, my cable package doesn't give me ESPN Classic or any of the Fox Sports channels, so its going to be Telemundo for me no matter what it looks like.

Well at least they sound determined to get it on live tv.

I do not get the Fox Soccer Channel though and I do not get Telemundo. If I the next package up on the dish I would be fine. I am starting to find that out a lot lately but I refuse to upgrade. I spend enough on tv as it is.

Watching scoers from England this morning and Convey has scored two goals so far for Reading and the game is still going. He seems to have gotten his stride back.

Ouch. I know Madrid's basically a World All-Star team and all, but 5-0? Ouch. Takes away all those good feelings from the Milan and Chelsea games. Talk about your backfires.

Not really when you consider these guys were picked over the weekend and what got in like what two sessions maybe together. Real Madrid is a club team that works and trains together and they are just about to start their season. If you are going to send a MLS All-Star team to something like this pick the team early and get some workouts in so these guys are used to each other. Not surprised at all at the result and I really don't think it would be completely fair to judge MLS on it. I am not saying another league couldn't slap together an all-star team in short notice and win but another league would have gone about it another way.

They never should have agreed to the game though because it was a mess to pick players for this team when 6 clubs are playing in the US Open Cup this week and some guys just got off duty with national teams.

The Thunder stay alive in the US Open Cup by knocking out their third MLS team.

Lets see if Donovan and the Galaxy can end the cinderella run.

HARTFORD, Connecticut -- United States coach Bruce Arena named a 26-man squad on Wednesday for CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers against Mexico and Guatemala.

The Americans meet Mexico in Columbus, Ohio, on September 3 and face a trip to Guatemala four days later.

The U.S. are second in the six-nation group with 15 points from six games and can clinch a place in their fifth straight finals with a win this weekend against its arch-rival.

Mexico have 16 points and need only a draw to book their place in Germany.

Arena called in additional players from Major League Soccer in the event the U.S. qualify this weekend as he would opt to take a predominately domestic-based squad to Guatemala City for the midweek clash.

There were no surprises but key players DaMarcus Beasley, Pablo Mastroeni and Frankie Hejduk, who were not included in the side that defeated Trinidad and Tobago last month, return following injury or suspension.

    Squad:

Goalkeepers: Marcus Hahnemann (Reading FC), Kasey Keller (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Matt Reis (New England Revolution)

Defenders: Chris Albright (Los Angeles Galaxy), Gregg Berhalter (Energie Cottbus), Carlos Bocanegra (Fulham FC), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards),

Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard de Liege), Greg Vanney (FC Dallas)

Midfielders: Chris Armas (Chicago Fire), DaMarcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven), Bobby Convey (Reading FC), Clint Dempsey (New England Revolution), Eddie Lewis (Leeds United), Justin Mapp (Chicago Fire), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids), Santino Quaranta (D.C. United), Steve Ralston (New England Revolution), Claudio Reyna (Manchester City).

Forwards: Jeff Cunningham (Colorado Rapids), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Eddie Johnson (FC Dallas), Brian McBride (Fulham FC), Taylor Twellman (New England Revolution)

USA clinches a World Cup spot by defeating Mexico 2-0 in Columbus.

Keller's shut out streak is now at 5+ games.
