You guys had a great season, and you broke our home winning streak and had us by a combined 9-3 here in Houston. I told my friend during extra time that if we lost there or in penalties it would be hard to be disappointed. At least you broke the trophy curse. Better luck next year.

Looks like Dempsy is going back to the Premiership on loan. Not sure why in the world he came back to MLS at this point and time anyway.

Toronto FC. Well on their way to being the Toronto Blue Jays of the MLS next season. High expectations. Will the story end the same? Likely.

David Villa and it looks like Fat Frank to be joining NYCFC

It'll be so nice to travel thirty minutes to a game instead of the trek to Harrison, NJ.

    Sorry RBNY, but you're out.

    Five boroughs. One city.

Are they stadium sharing with the Yankees?

What is David Villa doing until March?

You know Frank isn't fat right?

What does everyone make of Landon's omission from the World Cup?

I was surprised about Landon not being on the roster but he partially brought it upon himself when he took that time off a while back and continuing to play in MLS. Despite that I figured he would still be on the roster due to his experience and what not.

Yeah NYCFC is playing at Yankee Stadium until they get their own built.

Yeah I know Fat Frank isn't fat.

I think leaving Landycakes off the roster is going to be regrettable this year but seen as important in four years. Klinnsmann is clearly looking at 2018. It's not a coincidence he cut Donovan after signing a four year extension.

David Villa is going on loan to Melbourne City (the other Man City side in Australia) and if Lampard signs, there is talk of him coming as well.

New England bitching up New York here, no idea how they're losing. Bradley Wright-Phillips has touched the ball once.

Should it be alarming for David Beckham that two England friendlies were mostly filled with England fans and they couldn't even half fill the stadium?

Why would potential fans of his MLS side have any interest in England friendlies?

Really don't follow how that means they'd have an interest in England friendlies - be different if they were playing the USA maybe but why would they pay to watch England play Peru or Honduras?

This is a good point. St. Louis has had 4 soccer matches in the last year. Man City vs Chelsea and Real Madrid vs Inter sold out. Bosnia vs. Argentina and Bosnia vs. Ivory Coast did well but did not sell out and most of the fans were Bosnian because our city has like the biggest Bosnia population outside of Bosnia. I went to the club games but didn't go to the friendlies. I was not as interested in those games

Yeah turdy it's not exactly surprising that a 76,000 seater stadium wasn't full for England vs Peru at 3pm on a Wednesday

It wasn't "not full" the entire upper tier was empty and basically all the fans were English tourists.

You say 3pm on a Wednesday, I say what about the Saturday game?

The Saturday game got a 45,000 crowd for a game no neutral would have any interest in! This is a massive stadium.

That is a good crowd for a game. Hard to fill up a massive stadium here unless it is a US game or a game between two powerhouses from either Europe or South America. If it is only one powerhouse less likely to sell out. Argentina was here in St. Louis but it was against Bosnia (not a bad team and there is a local connection) but even then it didn't sell out Busch Stadium like the Man City/Chelsea game did.

How big are stadiums in England, which bleeds soccer, and will they draw 45,000 people for a friendly between say France and Nigeria, compared to the attendance here where soccer is the fifth most popular sport?

You play everyone at some point during the season. You just play your division/conference more than other division/conference. That goes for all sports over here more or less to a certain degree.

Seriously though. If I am thinking right each team only gets 3 and you can't trade for more slots like you could at the beginning unless something has changed. You already have Cahill and Henry who I am think are DP's.

The Cosmos don't play in MLS, they play in NASL which is a lower tier league.

The Red Bulls play in New Jersey and next year NYCFC will actually play in NYC in the Bronx.

    Yeah a bit mad.

To answer PG how many teams we need, the NYC area, which includes New Jersey, has two NFL teams, two MLB teams, two NBA teams, three NHL teams and will now have two MLS teams.

    We like our sports.

To be fair NYC has a large catchment area, I guess I just thought it would make more sense to expand the league into different states.

This is the new Manchester City (well, owners at least) lead push into the US. They have done the same in Australia, buying out the ownership of one of the Melbourne teams and rebranding (Melbourne Heart to Melbourne City).

Becks also owns a team, doesn't he? Or is that further down the line?

There are currently 19 teams spread over 13 states and in 2 countries. Expansion in 2015 will see it at 21/14/2 and the plan as of now is for 23/15/2 by 2017.

From coast to coast that's pretty spread given there are states here with the population density of the moon.

He's co-owning a team in Miami that has plans to start in 2017.

Not that I've heard but MTR is more in tune with things.

I'd also like to go to a straight up league table, but Americans love their playoff tournaments and to be honest, it adds drama as opposed to a team just having more points on the last day.

That's the exact argument that people use here. I guess it is more difficult in the US where you have divisions and conferences etc... but if you just played everyone twice, winner at the end... that would be great, right?

Over here, we only have 10 teams... and we play each other THREE times. Random draw (or more likely whoever the TV stations want to broadcast depending on timezones and schedule) to see who plays more home than away against each team. Shambles. Then a TOP 6 final series. You can finish in the bottom half and still win the league.

    Shambles. SHAMBLES.

Yeah but a huge part of sports culture here is you do well during the season to get better seeding in the playoffs, and then it's down to the teams to prove they're the best. If a bottom seed is able to out perform everyone when the pressure is on, they deserve it.

Look at how everyone fell in love with Colombia or how impossible it was for Costa Rica to get where they did. That's the one major thing that fuels American sports, the unlikely underdog.

In the Premier League it's a foregone conclusion that one of maybe four teams are going to win the league, a few teams have to fight off relegation and all the rest are just all the rest.

Can't imagine promotion/relegation ever being in a discussion here honestly. Bit of a haves/have nots with our sports. And, while personally it seems like an interesting wild-card to things, I can't see how the numbers work from a revenue standpoint. Like for instance a team that can fill out 20,000 seats relegated for a team that can only seat 8,000 max just sounds crazy. Crazy interesting, but too crazy for sports fans here. Certainly not something that current ownership would be in favor of either I think.

And as for one league table I'm afraid the almighty dollar rules there too. Not only are a playoffs format a financial boon for the league (and a system sports fans here are ingrained to), but the division/conference system helps even out the logistics of a country that can cover most of 3,000 miles for some routes (seattle to miami, l.a. to n.y. etc.). And Judas is right, the culture here is written of playoff heroes. Joe Montana, the Willis Reed game, Mr. October/November, and of course, PLAYOFF BEARDS.

We have one of those that the league markets as "distance derby" to somehow include it in the round where the local derbies are played.

Fair play if it works. Sounds as though a centrally located team would still have an overall advantage. Even be it a slight one.

And Seattle is in the middle of fucking nowhere in terms of travel unless it's against Portland.

The Seattle fans are mentally awesome though. 62,000 on Sunday night and I watched the match. 62,000 insane supporters the whole time. Not just a supporters section, all of them.

That atmosphere must be electric. We have a strong fanbase here in Houston, but 62,000 is batshit. Can't help but be jealous of that.

I was at a panel recently that had some people from MLS and relegation has come up and it may happen but not anytime soon. You are so right about the way we have our system and culture here and that it would be hard to convince owners to agree to that kind of system and lose that kind of money if there team got relegated. Never say never but yeah not probably happen for quite a long time if it ever happens.

Being a soccer fan I enjoy the whole table system but I also grew up watching other sports and fans of other sports over here that have playoff systems so I am fine with MLS having a playoff system honestly. They keep tweaking it which is good and less teams are getting in. At one point before expansion almost the whole league seemed to be in the playoffs. The conference and division thing does help with travel as you say and I think others have said. They still play everyone but you are going to play teams closer to you who honestly going to be your natural rivals anyway. My team DC United and the Red Bulls are natural rivals and play each other like 4 times a season I think. But DC is still going to play LA, San Jose, and the other coast though which is good because you should play everyone. The only "problem" with the way we do things is that the schedules are not technically equal for everyone. If we did a table and everyone played each other twice everyone plays the same schedule. Pros and cons to both ways.

Absolutely that everyone should play everyone else. Just a schedule focused on sorting out regional hierarchies seems pretty fitting for travel and whatnot. As well, like you said, the natural rivalries take shape. Not sure how to equalize the schedules for everyone though. The NFL has a good model for scheduling "evenness" to pick from, matching previous seasons weaker teams with weaker schedules and stronger teams/stronger schedules and so on. As the league expands this could be viable.

All in all after an awefully bumpy road to start I think MLS has things sorted pretty well for now. Enough of the traditional footballing throughout the season with the Lamar Hunt and CONCACAF CL going on, a regular season that matters, and then things culminate in a good ol' American-ized playoff chase with cinderellas, heroes, goats, and all that good stuff.

Looks like a classic. I've observed through the World Cup and also the commentator in that video, American soccer fans HATE backpasses to the goalie.

Passes back fucking suck. Especially when it was Bruce Arena's M.O. with a boring 4-4-2 and Bob Bradley was all, "Counter attack!"

Then came along a German who said, "BLITZKRIEG!"

Stop with the bullshit and fucking attack the goal. That is what Americans want in the sport. Fucking attack and fucking do it.

Also since Fulham got relegated and they're bringing NYCFC here in conjunction with the Yankees, I'm officially behind CITEH.

I assume you are also supporting Melbourne City as well?

I spit on you then. Fucking City, ruining football, polluting it with oil monies and bringing ridiculously good players to Australia.

What a club. What men. What NEW YORKERS.

The NYCFC "Founding Member" deal is ridiculous.

$306 (of which you only have to front $50) gets you tickets to all 17 games in the supporters section, an NYCFC scarf only available to "Founding Members" with your name stitched into it, your name etched in stone outside their future soccer-specific stadium, and priority for all seasons going forward.

    FIVE BOROUGHS

    ONE CITY

    NYCFC

    THIRD RAIL

Guessing the Dempsey link... and McBride and Bocanegra before him. Made Fulham a bit of an American choice for support when they had no natural team in the EPL to support?

I never watched soccer. We have the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL. Lots of sports.

But I decided 8 years ago, "OK, America is AMAZING, let me watch this World Cup thing because AMERICA IS AMAZING and see what it's all about. My father raised me to think soccer is only for women and girly Europeans.

Then I saw Brian McBride catch an elbow to the face from De Rossi and he was walking off with blood pouring down his face and the commentators mentioned he had titanium plates in his face from other injuries he'd suffered, he got cleaned up and went back in to play.

That's when I said, "This sport is manly and I will follow Brian McBride wherever he goes and wherever Americans go."

Turns out he was on Fulham. Onyewu, Bocanegra, Johnson and Dempsey wound up their too.

So Fulham became my squad simply because of the American link.

PS, after Brian McBride got bloody I promptly bought his top.

It's cool to get compliments from random soccer fans who go, "Oh man, is that a McBride? That's my favorite kit!"

Here is a better comparison. The Red Sox win the AL East and lose in the ALDS. The next year they win the AL East again and lose in the ALDS again. They make it to the exact same point as they did the prior season.

No, I am not thrilled with that.

Brazil has played in a few. Mexico is also a good team.

Doesn't matter though who plays. That is our region's championship. We have won it multiple times.

Not sure why I bother though.

So basically the best the US has done is to win a tournament just for it's "region". Doesn't seem very impressive to me.
