Anyone follow county cricket? Season started yesterday and avoiding relegation is about the best Lancashire can hope for in the 4-day competition. Our batting looks extremely weak but we have enough bits and pieces all-rounders to possible make a go of the T20 or other limited overs competitions. A few years ago we had a star-studded international lineup, our team this year has virtually no names that anyone outside of Lancs will have heard of.

Karl Brown, a number 3 batsman? No chance.
Stephen Croft at number 5 - he's a one-day lower-middle order who'll give you some medium pace overs at best.
Tom Smith is a good bowling all-rounder but is no way a top 6 batsman.

Topping, i'm sure you saw that Brown got 114 at number four in the first LV championship game. Looks like we will have three or four sessions to go for a win in that one.

    472 all out.

    Brown 114
    Chilton 87
    Croft 64
    Smith 60
    Cross 63

Not bad for a bunch of no-hopers

Seems crazy that the season has started already.

That said, if the weather's nice I'm planning on going to Lords on Saturday for day three of the Country Championship match between Middlesex and Essex. A day in the Sun drinking beer in front of 300 peoples. Sounds awesome.

Still the old guard though Da_man. Keedy and Chapple took nine wickets between.

Great start to the season though.

So, the Windies think that the best strategy for revitalising their one-day fortunes is to drop Sarwan, Chanderpaul and Gayle.

You wonder what some cricket board officials drink at their meetings.

Bah, they've fought back a bit but they still trail by 150. I can still see us ripping through them in the morning and claiming a third innings win.

Going to see my first cricket match next month, lads. Northants Vs. Durham. Twenty20.

Any love for the IPL around here? ITV4 is overloaded with it. Glorious.

Eoin Morgan is unbeaten on 156 for England Lions against Sri Lanka. Bopara made 17, Hildreth made 35. Hopefully that means Morgan will get the nod for the first test. Put him in and stick with him, the guy is so fucking talented (should obviously be playing for Ireland, mind)

    Strauss (c)
    Cook
    Trott
    Pietersen
    Bell
    Morgan
    Prior (wk)
    Broad
    Swann
    Anderson
    Tremlett/Finn

    Not bad.

Eoin Morgan's put a marker down for England too with 150 not out against Sri Lanka for the A team.

ALSO! Lancashire spanking Yorkshire scum @ Liverpool

Agreed on Morgan but I am not sure that three seamers is enough with our current attack. With Broad and Swan in the team I would be inclined to play a fourth fast bowler.

If Bresnan was fit I'd consider him as a 7 and an extra seamer after his Ashes performances. That would be in place of Bell rather than Morgan.

We should be able to skittle Sri Lanka's batsmen in early summer conditions with 3 seamers plus Swann though.

You can't drop Bell, he's been brilliant of late. I'd be more inclined to drop KP.

I think just the three seamers will be fine in our conditions and with Swann able to bowl forever, but I was nervous about it before the Ashes last winter.

What a win for Lancs today! Lost most of yesterday to rain and Yorkshire batted resolutely today. Managed to bowl them out giving us a target of 121 in a hour.

We only went and bloomin' did it. 5 sixes from the guys promoted up the order and scored at eight and a half an over. What a start to the season...

Thankfully this was not true news just rumours.

Morgan named in the squad. Finn will probably be 12th man.

Sri Lanka 43-5! 33 overs left, but I can see them going off for bad light in an hour or so.

Still, didn't expect a finish this exciting.

Going to watch Lancashire against Yorkshire in the T20 at Old Trafford tonight. Heading over about 1 for a few drinks beforehand. Should be a good gate with it being a local derby and a Friday night game.

Why the fuck have India vetoed use of referrals? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/13734520.stm

The cricket was very entertaining yesterday but the organisation was a joke. The covers took forever to come off and the lack of an early start and early tea was a disgrace.

Rare early declaration from Strauss today then.

Strauss is making some attacking calls today. Giving Tremlett the new ball is a good one and will hopefully give Broad a kick up the ass.

Went to Edgbaston on Friday for the T20. Great game in horrific weather. Never heard of Gareth Andrews but he was brilliant, won it for Worcestershire on his own.

I don't like what they've done with the ground at all. Half the stands were closed and it was a miserable day, but it all looked very dull and soviet-era concrete grey inside. No character or charm at all.

What are the ticket and beer prices like for T20 at Edgbaston? I might try and make a game this summer.

Tickets are £15. They gave us a free ticket for the Leicesteshire game as well, which is on a Friday at 7. I think they're turning the new lights on for the first time so they'll be doing loads of offers to make sure the ground's packed.

It's £3.70 a pint No staff on on Friday either, took fucking ages to get served. Queueing in the rain while your missing the game isn't much fun. I'd assume they'll get a few more people on the bars next time.

I've never been to T20 game. I've only ever been to ODI and tests where you can just relax in your seat with a beer. Very relaxing and fun day out.

Lancs Vs Yorks was absolutely heaving at the bar. I queued for my round thinking that even though the queues were massive, they'd get through people quite quickly. Must have missed 10 overs through waiting.

Usually they have marquees up at test and ODI matches where you can be in and away with your beer in 2 minutes. Don't know why they didn't have those in place because you had a sell-out and lots of Northerners wanting ale. They must have lost loads of revenue from people either giving up and/or just getting one round in and not bothering going back again.

It was very strange, the ground was less than half full. I guess they just didn't open enough bars with enough staff.

Lords is a dream, I usually sit in the Allen Bar. Members/members guests only so no riff-raff like Da Man, a glass wall, perfect view from next to the pavillion and a bar that's about £1.20 a pint cheaper than anywhere else in the ground, sells better beer and is never very busy.

I know there are a few of us in and around the midlands.

Edgbaston are offering FREE entry to the CB40L match between Warwickshire and Hampshire this Tuesday evening (26th). Could be worth popping down for it.

Three quick wickets in two overs for Sharma and England are in a bit of trouble now. They need to try and get a lead of over 350.

Excellent win for England. They were definitely the superior side, although I feel bad for India with the injuries. I have completely changed my opinion of Broad who gave his best bowling performance in ages. I was annoyed he was bowling short all the time like against Sri Lanka, and people were calling him the enforcer, and the guy to go to 'to bang it in short'. Its like saying to all the other teams that this bowler has now become predictable. So I was against the decision for him to be picked, but I was surprised by how well he bowled by pitching it up, and hopefully he will continue to bowl like this.

I just wish Strauss was more attacking with his field positions, but hey thats England I guess. Hes not the first England captain to be defensive, and probably won't be the last.

1PA, any idea how long these games go on for? I don't really follow county cricket.

If Dominic Cork plays then I'm getting excited.

Cork should be playing, I don't think he's injured.

The game starts at 4.40... I'd say it *should* be finished about 10.

    Nice sharing.
My favorite cricket team is Australia because they plays with their heart and fight to other team to end. I also a good player of cricket and played in a local club.

For anyone who didn't see it. He ran three on the last ball of the afternoon session, assumed it was four (the fielder had dived for it) then sauntered down to Morgan at the other end and India ran him out.

Nah, India should have told Bell to fuck off. Though I imagine the umpires asked them to withdraw.

It's within the oppostion captain's right to withdraw the appeal. Amazed that Dhoni has done it, but fair play to the man. Shows a lot of character to do that.

Crazy scenes, it wasn't in the spirit of the game to appeal for that but once they had they may as well have stuck to their guns.

These two are piling on the runs now.

374 is a very healthy lead, what a turn around from India being 40 ahead with 6 wickets in hand. England should add at least 50 more then have five sessions to bowl them out. Unless the weather (or an incredible Indian recovery) intervenes England will be one win away from being number one in the test rankings.

Our lower-middle order looks incredibly strong, particularly with Bresnan in there - Swann coming in at 10 when he could easily bat at 8.

It looks as good as the old South African lineup when Boucher, Pollock, Klusener etc used to always add another stack of runs when you thought you were making good inroads into them.

I am pleased to be proved wrong about our bowling attack, Anderson, Broad and Tremers have been dominant this summer. Hopefully Broad will have more games like this now, he may have the potential to be on the level of Flintoff.

What a man Bresno is, 90 earlier and how 5 for. If only he had got that century, I bet no one has ever scored a century and got five wickets in the same day of a test match.

Before this test Bresnan had a test batting average of 32.8 and a bowling average of 28.28, he needs to stay in the team.

I got hammered for this statement in the Ashes thread but I really think it has been vindicated now.

I love the England cricket team, not only are they successful but most of them seem thoroughly nice too. They certainly put the footballers to shame.

Dont want to see Bresnan lose his place, but then I do love Tremlett.

If Trott is injured for the next test then 5 bowlers is an option. At some point the Indian batsmen will fire and we'll need the extra option if they're posting 500+.

Agree on BC's point about them all seeming like good lads. Just from their interaction on Twitter, Swann, Bresnan, Anderson and Broad all seem like regular guys who get on well, take the piss out of each and don't take things too seriously off the pitch.

Yeah with England's lower order scoring a pile of runs lately, 5 bowlers should definitely be an option. Today's win was pretty damn comprehensive, England's seamers have been great, and I can't see them dropping Bresnan after today's performance. If Trott is still injured, and they go with 4 bowlers, I'm not sure who they are going to replace for Trott. Bopara seems a bit iffy to me at Test level, so going with five bowlers should be the logical option.

James Taylor at Leicestershire looks a heck of a talent but five bowlers would be the best option. Bell up to 3 and shifting all the lower order up one would work.

The batting pool looks a bit bare at present past the first XI. Nobody is standing out as having a great season domestically. In the bowling department we've got plenty in reserve - Finn, Onions, Shahzad, Dernbach, Woakes.

Been saying this for years. They're actual people you can relate to slightly, unlike top flight footballers.

How good is it being this bloody good lads? I remember us being declared the worst team in the world after losing to New Zealand... makes the success we're enjoying now so sweet.

England should be on the top of the heap. India are useless outside of India.
