How the hell does Sundqvist get a suspension for that?

Boston are running scared here early in the first. I have actually never seen players afraid to go in the corners like this.

    Sundqvist is a huge factor.

It was nice to see that the Blues remembered they were playing for the Cup last night.

Well they do have a better road record in the playoffs this year than home record. So we shall see. Lets Go Blues!

Gonna be a crazy game tonight, can't wait. I read that Chara might don the fishbowl and play on tonight with a broken jaw. Guy's a beast.

Backes must feel so weird. Healthy scratch tonight, and was immediately the previous longtime captain of the blues, now watching on the sidelines as his Bruins lose to the blues tonight (hopefully)

Ok so I hate the Bruins but the blues stole one tonight via officiating. How in the fuck does that slewfoot not get called? Amongst a litany of non-calls tonight, blues got lucky. Johannson getting mugged was also a noncall.

    Oh well go blues.

It's not like the Bruins were lighting up the scoreboard in that game. That was a bad no call, but I call bullshit on anyone who will say that this cost Boston the game. Them not scoring cost them.

    I know right.

How dare the refs allow Binnington to stop 40-ish shots on goal.

The outcome of the game should not be determined by adverse officiating, ever. Bozak viciously slewfooted Acciari (concussion protocol?), which should have been an automatic penalty, not called, and Perron walks in and scores on the SAME play, what ended up being the game-winning goal. Boston not scoring to even it up after this blown call only underscores the severity of the situation because Perron's goal should not have been allowed in the first place. Even Bozak knew he was guilty, he got up to 'argue' the penalty and then quickly realized he wasn't even going to be called lol.

Listen, i'm glad the Blues won and Binnington played incredible, but that non-call changed the outcome of the game. Without question.

I say it is just karma coming back to help the Blues after losing that game to San Jose in OT after the hand pass.

I would be more sympathetic if Boston were tied with them, but they weren't doing shit offensively.

the refs now owe us. we better get some of that karma in game 6. even aside from the tripping call that resulted in the game winner, you can't let them keep taking cheap shots to the head without calling it.

The headshots I assume you are all talking about are the Krug and Johannson hits? Both hits were to the body, both feet on the ice, elbow by their side and shoulder down. They weren't dirty and Boston put themselves in vulnerable positions both times. They're not penalties.

The slewfoot was. Unfortunate that it ended in a goal, but let's be honest, Boston look depleted. Bizarre situation to play down a forward to give backup to Chara. Go down to 5 and get some chemistry with the forwards if you need to. Should have juggled the top 6 by now anyways. Their play is great when it works, but they really haven't shown any ability to change things up when it doesn't work. St. Louis have simply figured them out and their stats show it.

I didn't see much from Boston in that game to say they can come to steal one in St. Louis. If that's the performance you put up in that situation, in that building, with that crowd, then this will be over in 6.

The Krug hit I'd say the contact to the head was pretty light. I'm not going to call foul on that one. Let the boys play. Fine.

The Johansson hit was pretty blatant. Clearly head contact, I'm not sure how you can state otherwise.

They have been taking head shots all series.

There might be contact with the head, but it's all body with it. If he doesn't get the body, then sure.

Barbashev was given a 1 game suspension for this hit (for which no penalty was called) so the NHL disagrees with you.

Krug should have been suspended on the basis of this suspension, then.

Conn Smythe discussion could get interesting if the Blues finish this off tomorrow.

I thought Binnington was a lock for the Hart nomination, but oddly enough he ended up with Calder. I can't see them giving him MVP in playoffs if he isn't even considered for regular season. We are looking at a team who are consistent throughout the line-up and have had players step up when others go cold. Nobody really shined through the entirety of the playoffs which is a testament to the depth of the squad. Pietrangelo is probably most deserving in my eyes if you're looking at star power.

I have to say that as a big TV fan, having Jon Hamm and Jenna Fischer being the two big celebrity Blues fans they keep showing at these games, I can't hate it. That's a good duo.

The Jim vs Pam angle plays too

There's some chatter about whether Bortuzzo will be suspended for his cheap shot at the end of the game. I say yes. I think when a game is lost and penalties don't matter it shouldn't be an open invitation for a dirty team to take cheap shots. Gotta police them somehow. The 5 on 3 to end the game didn't matter, so suspend him for game 7.

Either way though, the Blues have really shown their colors as a scummy team. I get the sense even neutral hockey fans dislike them. Big picture it's a great story for the Blues to win, but their conduct puts a damper on it.

I think you're blinded by the "we aren't winning easily" headlights. Boston have gotten away with more than St. Louis. They're just not used to someone playing the physical game back and they dont like it.

In retrospect my above post was over the top but my knowledge of the Blues is admittedly based entirely on this series and what I'm seeing on my twitter feed. The Bortuzzo punch at the end was in ill form because instead of dropping the gloves for a fair go he punched him while still holding his stick in his punching hand, which I've been told is a possibly suspenable offense although it appears unlikely he will be punished. I don't claim to know what really is or isn't over the line in this sport as I don't watch it very much.

So I will happily walk back my take. They are a physical team, nothing wrong with that. They make dirty plays as most teams do. I hope they get called for them, as they do when the Bruins make dirty plays.Game on.

It's been a good series by my account. Evenly matched. As much as I believe Boston is destined to win game 7, the Blues have proven to be a formidable road team.

Binningtons ability to bounce back should make the goaltending pretty even. I think it's all about who jumps out of the gate quicker. Game 7 is always a good series.

Dear Hockey Gods, this Canucks fan will let bygones be bygones if I can watch the Bruins lose game 7 of the Cup Finals in their barn. Those fuckers are due some serious karma, watching spoiled brat Boston fan throwing hissyfits would amuse me greatly.

Dear St. Louis, figure it out...

2011 was a bad year for you guys. I hate the Bruins too but those Blues are a bunch of goons and employ similar tactics. For me, it's the story that I like - being, finally st louis brings home a cup to a very proud fanbase who has been waiting for 50 years.

I'm praying for OT tonight. Nothing better than Game 7 OT Stanley Cup Finals!

I"m gonna say that St Louis wins tonight, only because the refs are gonna be loosey goosey (because it's Game 7 and they dont want to be deciding factor) and the Blues will grind it out via vicious forecheck

People are saying Jon Hamm shaving his playoff beard before game 6 put the nail in the Blues coffin. You would hate to see them get this close only for their superfan to ruin it.

Very happy for the Blues!! Binnington stole that one tonight, just as Rask did in game 6. Nice to see hometown guy Pat Maroon come home and find success

Surprised Binnington didn't get the Conn Smythe. My take is the Blues would have been nowhere near the final without him. O'Reilly was consistent, but not the same influence on their success.

I was surprised Binnington didn't get it as well but I think O'Reilly was a good choice but I think I would have gone Binnington.

What a game. I missed some of it due to my son had a scout meeting to do a gear check for their high adventure trip to Canada in a couple weeks but they tried to keep it short so we could all get back to the game.

Awesome story with St. Louis going from the bottom of the league to cup champs. Didn't really have a team in this, but now comes the near four-month absence of hockey I always hate.

Went downtown for the parade. Sadly got there way late and didn't get a good spot to see a whole lot. Did get a glimpse of the Cup and Con Smythe. I have seen some video of the parade. I meant to record it and watch it later. So awesome to be down there with that many people finally celebrating winning the Cup. I didn't go to the Arch for the rally afterwards. I was peopled out by then after using public transport to get there and knowing I had to use it to get back home.

Karlsson resigns with the Sharks, 8 X 11. Good for him, he got his big payday. My Sens grab an additional Shark 2nd round draft as a result of this signing. Nice. Big risk for the Sharks, giving him full term, given his age and increasing magnitude of injuries. Pretty sure they won't be happy with that contract come year 3 or 4 lol. But hey, it's Karlsson and he's a rare talent who will tip your scales from being a contender to a champion. If the Sharks didn't pay him, someone else would have. Should be very interesting to see how it all pans out.

Phew. There were some links to Montreal and I think that contract becomes a disaster in 3 or less years. Karlsson is on the decline and I don't see him producing over a long career. I'm not sure that what he adds to an already stacked D offsets what is going to happen to their offense. They have something like 7 forwards signed, with about 12-13 million to fill out their roster. There's about 10 million more invested in their D than forwards as well. I get that a lot of your offense is driven from the blue line, but how do you not see this going tits up when you let Pavelski and/or Meier go and Couture gets injured again?

anyone catch the NHL awards last night? For the most part pretty cringey, but a few good parts. Keenan doing a skit as Lavar Ball talking about bringing in LaWayne Gretzky, etc. And then there was that moment with Price giving that young boy a jersey and tickets to next year's all star game. Oh man when the boy started balling, I started balling. Got me in the feels there. Jesus, gonna well up again just thinking about it. Happy for Kucherov, winning double duty Hart & Lindsay awards

I'd love to know what the criteria for Hart is. Most valuable player to me is the player who was most crucial to their team's success. In my opinion that isn't a player who has the Vezina winner on his team. It's probably the goalie who stepped in and took his team from last to playoffs, and then a Stanley Cup.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think the NHL awards are tallied and finalized before the playoffs so no consideration is given to performance in playoffs. So Binnington wouldn't have looked that sexy at that point in time.

Votes are tallied before playoffs, but if anything, he looked better going in. He is the reason St. Louis made the playoffs.

I liked the Habs picks, the first two rounds at least. Don't know a whole lot beyond that. I'll get to watch Struble develop a little as long as he keeps his college commitment to NU.
I also liked what Minnesota did pretty much the entire draft. Good value drafting Lindberg in Rd 7.
Thompson to New Jersey made me happy. Seems to have a much more pro-friendly game than brother Tage.

Surprised no activity in here after that BARN BURNER of a free agency day yesterday!

Wow Bergevin with the offer sheet to Aho that gives Aho the 5yr term he wanted (so he can make the big $ later). Plus, he poison-pilled that contract with max bonus in year 1 & 2, to the tune of what, 21M paid out in the first 12 months?? Jesus. Canes will definitely match, but I hope they got some CASH FLOW for that contract lol. That's gonna hurt for a low-budget Canes team. On the other hand that's a nice chill contract for the Canes, not too pricey for a superstart 21yr point-per game guy and will help them pay Svechnikov. Bergevin making no friends today lol

Things like that will probably come back to him when one of his players becomes an RFA. Not a lot of high-impact moves made, despite the top names mostly already being signed. I like the Bobrovsky signing for Florida, just not the length of the contract. I think they are a playoff team next season. They have enough talent on offense and defense, they just didn't have stability in goal. While Bob is a bit risky and unreliable at times, they needed this more than anything else.

I liked the Pavelski signing for Dallas. It's the right move and right terms for an older guy with his skill-set.
And LOL at the Oilers and Flames basically trading goalies through signings. Was not a fan of either guy with either team at the time but surely Smith is just a place holder until one of the younger guys are considered ready.

oh man i'm the opposite on the bobrovsky contract. I think that's a ridiculous contract. $10M X 7yrs?! They are going to regret that contract after yr2, as he's always been a hot & cold goalie. They gonna be on the line for that whale of a contract and it will restrict them when they have to open up the bank to pay some of their young superstars down the line. Panthers wanted Panarin really bad and didn't get him.

NJ looks pretty good, with Hall, Hishier and Palmieri, not to mention selecting generational Hughs #1 at the draft..Throw in PK Subban and Simmonds (smart to not give him term, just a show-me contract). It will be interesting to see if NJ pulls this together and competes for a playoff spot this year.

Agree on the length of Bob's contract. By year 4 I'd think their #1 pick Knight should be ready to step in, and for the remainder of the contract it's going to be all regrets much like the last few years of Luongo. Also agree on NJ but don't see them succeeding simply for the lack of strong goaltending. A borderline playoff team this year and some really nice offseason moves thus far.

Let's not forget NJ are still going with Schneider. I don't think they will be able to dump his contract anywhere, and are going to start getting tight in cap space next year. Wonder if they'll be able to rent a goalie around trade deadline. I don't think there are many decent goalies going into UFA apart from Holtby.

They could probably take on Jake Allen if the Blues retain a bit of salary, which they probably have room for.

Honestly I think they should trade Marner. Not getting rid of Matthews or Taveres and the Nylander contract is ugly after the past season. Hopefully he can turn it around, but at least they'd be able to get a good return for Marner.

What are they going to trade him for? They're in a situation where they have to go all out now. I can't see them benefiting from a trade at this point.

I think they're gonna be a fun team, but a fringe playoff team because of goaltending. Gonna be fun with some of the changes Florida made too.

Opening night last night. A few good games.

    Predictions for this year:

    Pittsburgh misses the playoffs
    Vancouver gets in

    Toronto to the conference finals
Dallas makes it to western conference finals

    Calgary-Tampa Bay in finals rematch

    Bruce Boudreau first coach fired
    Mackinnon wins Hart Trophy

Detroit will probably be a non-factor again this season, but Tampa-based teams have always been my secondary favorites. I am hoping Tampa gets over its first round humiliation from last year and gets it down this season.

And Toronto never does anything in the playoffs. I wouldn't bet money on that prediction.

I want the players to be safe, but I would love some sports right now. It is amazing how abnormal life feels without it.

I'm ready for some hockey that isn't a video game or re-run kind.

I'm not a huge fan of the playoff format, but if we can get hockey back with the players safety a priority, I'm all for it.

Bump for the two others who post in here. Playoffs/qualifiers/round robin begins Saturday with Rangers vs. Hurricanes.

Seattle Kraken... I think it's pretty good.

Logo & Jerseys are quality but I’m not digging the name still.

Love the name and logo, loved the teaser and reveal videos.

Against my better judgement, I’m starting to get involved in this COVID Cup; I said I wouldn’t, but being back in the “playoffs” just feels so cathartic after 9+ years of getting emotionally ass-kicked. Which undoubtedly means that given my 25+ years as a Canucks fan, we’ll go on a Cinderella-run only to have COVID-19 punch us all in the face and cancel the tournament before its conclusion. If you’re a Canucks fan, the other shoe always drops...

Not surprised Rangers got the sweep, outclassed and out coached by the better team. Was still a very good rebuilding season for the young team, will be even better next season.
