Froseph, have the Bruins gotten that much stronger as the play-offs have gone on or were the Leafs actually that good? They're steamrolling everyone else they face...

I feel bad for Iggy. I was pulling for him.

They have definitely been playing better in this round and the last, especially Rask who is a fuckkng beast right now.

Full disclosure though I went to bed after the first OT ended last night.

Hate both teams, could tolerate the Hawks winning a little more.

Jeremy Jacobs, who was the driving force behind the last lockout, does not deserve to be rewarded with another Bruins Cup victory.

Canucks fan. Three consecutive playoff match-ups, the first two being losses; a bit of bad blood has been created.

The thing that allows me to tolerate a Hawks win is the style of hockey that they play: fast paced, a wide open offensive style. This big boy bully style that the Bruins/Kings play is terrible for the game.

The butthole Bruins are on a whole other level, the way that they bullied their way to the Cup in 2011 still pisses me off. Aside from Zdeno, the Bruins franchise can fuck right off.

This is an honest question coming from a non-huge-hockey guy... why was the way the Bruins won 2 years ago 'bullying'?

Boychuk can-opening a defenceless Raymond into the side boards, resulting in a broken neck. Marchand speedbagging Daniel Sedin in front of the refs. The numerous post whistle melees which the Canucks got suckered into, eventually having to pull the same shit because the refs wouldn't call a damn thing.

Gotcha! I live in Chicago so I'm just a little impartial.....but I always thought that the Hawks played a fan friendly game and were gererally well recieved within the hockey community.

    Ouch. Riot smack, low blow.

The rest of the hockey world probably doesn't think as badly of the Bruins as we/I do, but then again we Canucks fans have been given the whiner/crybaby rep.

We're still getting beaked at by Bruins fans, our star players are still getting the "Sedin sisters" rap. Certainly not helping my Bruins hatred go away.

I was cheering hard for Boston in 2011 and I made a shitload of money off Canucks fans. The Canucks played just as dirty if not more so, Lou was made to look like a whiny bitch compared to Thomas. In true Canuck fashion, the silly spoiled fans trashed our beautiful city after the game. Coffee shops that I frequent to read and watch pretty girls go by had their windows smashed out by Canuck fans. I have no respect for the Vancouver Canucks and their "fans", to call Boston dirty and a bully is Vancouver biased media nonsense.

Boston simply out played Vancouver. Just like LA did last year and San Jose did this year.

The Sedins are notorious for going AWOL when faced with a bit of rough hockey. Hit them and take them out of the game. It's not as bad as it used to be, but Boston were mis-labeled as bullies, it was more of a case that Vancouver were little girls. Raymond excluded of course, but that hardly changed the series. If anything it should have motivated the Canucks. I absolutely hate Boston as well.

It looks more and more like a seven game series. I think that's good for hockey with two big US markets battling it out in a close final.

Off topic a bit, does anyone ever mess around with the capgeek salary cap/line-up estimator? I was messing with the Leafs line-up and potential free agents, etc and it was a good bit of fun. I wonder how Nathan Horton would look in a Leafs uniform? Or David Clarkson?

I have, because the Canucks are pretty screwed. Between several albatross contracts and most of our core having no-movement/trade clauses, the management team has their work cut out for them this summer.

Who had the brilliant idea to decrease the cap anyways? Was it Bettman? Yes, let's penalize the good successful teams who have the financial means and desire to retain their good players.

Bettman is constantly trying to protect all of the teams he shoe-horned into non-hockey markets. Predictably, those teams can't make any money but they always lobby for a lower cap using player salaries as their excuse instead of bad markets. I'm good with salary caps in general but it's getting a bit much in the NHL.

By the way, James Reimer is the Rodney Dangerfield of the NHL. The guy can't get any respect. I don't mind the price we paid for Bernier but I feel for Reimer who has comparable, or better, numbers in far more NHL games. I hope Bernier can live up to the hype but the fact is he's an unproven commodity and we just created a massive goaltending controversy in the worst city possible. The media will have a field day with this all season if one of them isn't traded.

I have to wonder if Reimer is going to be moved... and whether that's the right call if it comes to pass. 25 year olds with .925 save percentages aren't the worst option in net.

I'm not sold on Reimer, I still think he's inconsistent, but I don't understand going for Bernier. It's not a proven upgrade in the net. If you were going to shop for a goalie, you probably should have gone for a proven goalie with some experience under his belt. Now you've just taken a sideways step in net, and a step back everywhere else. It's not an overally steep price, it may pay off tremendously, but I don't quite understand it at this point.

I don't like the way the Hawks bullied their way to that title. They were checking players into the boards and getting in skirmishes! So out of line.

I'm not trying to say Canadians are sore losers but there seems to be a trend here:

I'm upset about the result last night but I can also acknowledge that it was a great finish, tip my hat to the Blackhawks and move on without holding a grudge.

It's easier to feel that way when your team won just 2 years ago instead of your entire city not winning since 1993.

Also that's the Sun. No one should read the Sun. Absolute trash newspaper.

Aaaaand now you're jumping for joy. Alfie leaving was a surprise but Bobby Ryan is a stud and I'm kind of pissed the Leafs couldn't put a package together better than Silfverberg, who is a nice second line prospect, a first round pick and a guy I'm not familiar with. Is that third name a can't-miss prospect or something? If not, Ottawa wins this one hands down. Aside from the loss of leadership with Alfie, Ryan is an upgrade at this point in their careers.

As for the Leafs, I'm ok with the Clarkson signing but it could definitely blow up on us. Grabo was making what we just gave to Clarkson and I'll take Clarkson in Carlysle's system with Bolland taking over the third line centre role. I'm not sure about re-signing Bozak though. We needed to upgrade there. Bozak is a solid player with good face-off and defensive skills but he's not first-line centre material. Hopefully Kadri is for real and continues to develop. It's also too bad we couldn't get one of Ference or Scuderi. Either would have looked good in a Leafs sweater.

Other random NHL free agency thoughts:

Tampa Bay giving Filpula $25 million over 5 years is a huge gamble and a strange investment since he plays centre and they kind of already have a talented centre in that Stamkos guy.
I don't understand Montreal going after Briere. He's exactly what they didn't need.
Same with Philly and Vinny. Lecavalier seemed a better fit in Montreal really.
Ference is a solid and much needed pick up for Edmonton.
The Stars stole Tyler Seguin. He's going to floorish there.

To be realistic, Montreal need quite a few pieces. Obviously Vinny would have been ideal, but we didn't get him. It's hard to see what they're going to do with Eller and Gionta back in the mix. They're got some options to shift things around. Possibly going to trade off a player maybe? Our top 12 looks like Patches, Desharnais, Gallagher, Gally, Pleks, Gionta, Eller, Bourque, Briere, Parros, Moen, Prust. Still have to find somewhere for White, Leblanc will hopefully be starting some games this year. I can't quite figure out what the plan is yet.

Toronto re-signing, and overpaying Bozak is hilarious. You need a bit more star power in between Kessel and Lupul. Clarkson is an ok signing, but I think the 7 years will bite you in the ass. You were probably better off with Grabs.

Odds of Clearly shipping to NJ just went up.

Turns out he got quite a generous contract in Philly. Odd, but ok.

Getting pretty excited about the new season. It'll be interesting to see what we can do. Team looks about the same up front as I mentioned above, but an addition or two on the back end will cause some extra competition.

I imagine we'll be a bit worse over the course of a longer season, but might show a bit more potential than we did in the post season last year. I don't think we will win the division, so hoping for a 4-7 seed finish.

The Leafs are looking pretty good for this season I think. One of Bernier or Reimer should be able to provide quality goaltending which was an issue in the past. With Clarkson, Bolland and JVR up front we aren't so small anymore. If Kadri can continue to develop we'll be decent down the middle. Not strong but decent. Bozak isn't a first line centre.

I think we'll challenge for the top half of the table this year. We were the five seed last year. I think the fourth seed is in play and that we might challenge for the division title. That division is going to be pretty competitive this year.

I don't think either of our teams are going to do as well with a full schedule. Not to say we won't make playoffs, but I think the division will go to Boston.

It should go to Boston. They're another year older though and lost Jagr and Seguin. I can only hope they start to slow down.

Don't think Buffalo will win at all....unless it was sarcasm.

Bernier whooped Miller's ass in that fight tonight.

Well, we're making news this year aren't we? I hope Parros is ok. That was nasty. Both goalies looked good thus far. We got a bit lucky with the officiating against Montreal but got the opposite in Philly.

I still think Boston is the division favourite. They're better on paper than Detroit. We'll be in the conversation though, particularly if we this type of goaltending.

Oh, and 64 Million over 8 years for Phil the Thrill is probably fair. Phaneuf will be trickier. He's probably over-paid right now and I assume he'll want a raise. That one is going to be interesting.

Typical Toronto though, start strong and trail off into shit. I don't think it'll be a playoff miss disaster like most times, but I don't think you've got the steam to hold up top spot in the end.

How the fuck are Calgary winning?

This thread is pretty dead, but it needs to be revived in the wake of Chris Kunitz being mentioned for team Canada. Did you not learn from your mistakes with Patrice Bergeron?

Do they not realize that they could have Crosby play with an actual top tier talent and that there isn't a salary cap in Olympic hockey? Particularly on the big ice in Russia, speed will be everything. I'm not even sold that Rick Nash will be an asset, forget Kunitz.

Leafs are in a dive now, predictable but early enough to be forgotten in the long run. You can't give up 50 shots a game and expect to win. We need to bring in some defensemen that can actually play defense. This Phaneuf for $7.5/$8 million over 7 years stuff is insanity by the way. Spend that one two decent stay at home defensemen and let Franson take on Phaneuf's current role at half the price. If we do that deal, I'll be pissed.

It's like they don't even realize there's a better option on the same team in James Neal. It's incredible.

The likes of Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Jason Spezza, Jordan Eberle, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Taylor Hall and Tyler Sequin not even getting a sniff while Kunitz and Bergeron are being mentioned again is baffling.

I'm far from Subban's biggest supporter, but to leave him off the roster as well would just be a mistake. He's not the type of player you're going to play big minutes, as he's a major defensive liability. I just don't think you can afford to not have him ready for the power play and offensive situations. There's talks of Phaneuf going for the love of god.

I find it incredibly difficult to pick 14 forwards from the available pool. You've got your locks in Crosby, Perry, Getzlaf, Tavares and Toews.

Then you've got your solid picks in Couture, Benn, Duchene, Giroux, Sharpe.

Which leaves about 4 spots for St. Louis, Thornton, Richards, Carter, Spezza, Neal, Staal, Nash, Eberle, Marleau, Hall, Sequin, Kunitz and Bergeron. Knock that down to 3 is Stamkos comes back.

Defense is a lot easier. Keith, Weber, Pietrangelo, Doughty are locks.

Bouwmeester, Seabrook, Vlasic, Boyle, Green, Subban should be the remaining picks, with Green and one other missing out.

Price, Luongo and the flavor of the week in net.

I meant to reply to this and got busy. I agree on Neal for sure. Kunitz over Neal is bizarre.

Subban as well. He should be there. His skating on the big ice will be a plus.

Keith, Weber, Pietrangelo, Doughty, Subban on D for sure. Then I would personally pick Seabrook (chemistry with Keith) and anyone not named Dion Phaneuf. How the hell is he getting mentions by the way?

Forward is indeed tough. Crosby, Perry, Getzlaf, Tavares and Toews are locks for sure. I would like them to take St. Louis. I think his speed and experience are big assets. Couture and Duchene are the next generation and need to be there to experience everything. I’m not sure that Giroux will make it given his play this year but we’ll see. Staal is too slow. Nash might be too slow but his touch around the net might also be too good to pass up. I think Stamkos is going to try and make it back. If he does, he’s in the lock category. I think Neal should be there. Benn and Sharpe I’m on the fence about.

I think you have to go with Lou in net. He’s playing well, has the experience and shouldn’t be displaced for no reason. Price is maddeningly inconsistent, as you know all too well. I think you have to select him though because if he gets hot he can be unbeatable. And as a darkhorse, I don’t think James Reimer should be overlooked. His numbers over the last few years, with a bad team in front of him more often than not, are very impressive. They’ll probably take Fleury if he keeps playing well though.

    Milan Lucic on Vancouver:

“That’s one of the worst parts, it’s in my hometown,” he said. “Going back to the spray painting of the church and my grandparents and parents and family getting harassed during the [Stanley Cup] finals against the Canucks in 2011, and now it’s escalated to a point where I get attacked for just minding my own business. I have no reason left to defend my city and then the people of my city. I’m just disgusted and outraged that it had to come to something like that. As far as that goes, other than being at Rogers Arena, no one will ever see me in downtown Vancouver ever again.”
Damn Canada, I thought you were cool.

You appear to have far more than the average sports franchise. I'm sure there are good Canucks fans, don't get me wrong, but your fan base is getting a really bad reputation. The organization needs to make an attempt at reasoning with it's base before things go even further.

Reimer can't even lock down a starting position in Toronto. He's not going to make team Canada. Mike Smith looks like the third goalie for me now.

Reims won't collapse. The D has already (predictably) gone to shit. It's the forwards that could dip and spell total disaster. I figure the plan all along has been to move Reims at the deadline for D help. I'm not sure if it will materialize or not though since he's an UFA at the end of this year to my knowledge.

I love that the media always talks about our defensive "depth" by the way, purely because we have more than 6 defensemen who can be plugged in at any time. The whole reason we have so many interchangeable defensemen is because none of them are stand outs. That's not depth. It's the opposite of depth.

Nothing about the US Olympic team selection? I don't care what the logic is, and it's apparently to go with a "skill" top 6 and a defensive bottom 6, leaving off Bobby Ryan is idiocy. I know it's on the big ice and Ryan doesn't skate like Wheeler but really? Wheeler over Ryan? Stepan over Ryan? I don't know. I have a hard time leaving that kind of skill at home. Yandle over Fowler is surprising as well and Jimmy Howard seems to be getting the benefit of the doubt with the way he's played this season. Ryan is by far the biggest though.

I get Bergeron. He takes a lot of flack but he's a good face off and PK guy. Kunitz and Carter are a bit odd to me. As is Hamhuis and Bowmeester over Seabrook who is Keith's partner in Chicago. If you're going to take Kunitz due to his familiarity with Crosby, how can you defend not taking Seabrook? The one I understand least is Nash though. They talked up speed but they include a plodder who has been hurt all year. On the small ice and healthy Nash is a great power forward but this is a bad fit. Especially when it means leaving off Giroux or St. Louis. That one was a head scratcher for me.

Should be able to get a bit of banter going in here for the Olympics.

I'll get the ball rolling by saying that from recent play, there's no way they can go with Luongo to start over Price. It really wouldn't surprise me given the decisions they've made, more specifically the one's biasing the players from 2010.

Luongo back to the panthers. I almost forgot all together that he came from Florida..

Not sure what they're getting in return but Vancouver sure has been a bust under Torts this season.

Without really looking into this, I cannot find the logic in making this trade.

Also, Edmonton need to just invest in a proven goaltender. Scrivens and Fasth are flavors of the week. They'll be back in the market in less than a year.

Gillis is an idiot. He would have got way more from the Leafs in the summer and got greedy. He's been a disaster in Vancouver after inheriting a championship calibre roster. I wouldn't trust him with a rebuild.

I'm quite happy that trade never materialized. Bernier has been money for us and we basically paid nothing for him. I was against that deal at the time but I was very wrong.

Can someone tell me why Colorado was not called for penalties when they: 1. Knocked their own goal off the moorings, and 2. Had a man take down two defensemen at the knees who could have defended the game winner? Both seemed clear cut to me but I must be wrong since they weren't called.

What is or isn't a penalty in playoff hockey is totally different than in the regular season. And what is and isn't a penalty in playoff hockey is totally different in the last few minutes. It's garbage but it's the way it is...

Yeh, someone explained to me that its only a penalty if you intentionally move the net whereas this guy was at full tilt to prevent an open netter. But the interference in overtime still sucks. Take out two guys at the knees to leave your teammate alone with the goalie seems like it should have been an easy call.

    Where are all my peeps??

Things aren't looking good for my Wings, but at least Zetterberg is back. Tuukka Rask is crazy awesome though.

Meanwhile, Blues and Hawks are beating each other up.
