The guy was something else when it came to work ethic. There’s not many athletes that we’ve seen that have that sheer willpower to give everything they have, find a little bit more, give that, and just play with true vigor and fire. Incredible competitor. It’s a shame because he was adpating and growing as an ambassador for the game and life beyond playing. Sad, sad stuff. Life is too fragile.

I think this is the worst sports death I've ever experienced. Completely gutted.

And the Grammy Awards are tonight at the Staples Center. Jeez, that's some unfortunate timing.

They were en route to his daughter's basketball game so the odds of more kids being on there are pretty high.

    This is so fuckin sad.

An athlete who approached the game thoroughly the right way. He met every single challenge entirely head on. He milked every ounce talent he was very fortunate to have through hard work and didn't leave a shred of effort on the court.

But he also seemed to approach life that way in general, and just as importantly his post-basketball career that way. That part which was just beginning to soar, including an Academy Award just two years removed from playing the game..

Just seemed like he was only about to hit his stride in what he was unquestionably going to offer his family and the world around him.

I don't know a ton about his recent business moves but I could have easily envisioned Kobe reaching Jay-Z-esque mogul status.

I feel like I’ve lost an icon of my generation for the first time in my life.

For instance Michael Jackson wasn’t of my generation. I was too young to witness his come up and prime.

This hits different. He’s been a staple of American sports culture for the past 23 years. He’s a once a generation player. Guys come along with similar talent or greater athleticism but no one since Jordon had his drive and killer instinct and performed at that level.

    Mamba Mentality Forever

I'm so strangely affected by this. I'm sure it's the shock + my being a father to girls only + also I am a tenacious/all costs leader.

Fuck today. I was a shaq guy. I have mostly disliked Kobe over the years and I am at a total loss for perspective.

So a lot of LA people are fucked up. I gave a few of my peeps the day off tomorrow. I'm taking off tomorrow and my plan is to pick up my kids early from school, go buy some small Kobe jerseys and head to staples to honor Kobe.

As lame as it sounds, a lot of my 40+ successful friends were making social media posts about how they took the Kobe mentality into the workplace. It's really interesting how an old head like me who loved Magic and Worthy can quickly realize how much more important Kobe will be forever, from this point on, compared to my childhood Laker heroes.

I will be curious what your experience is finding those jerseys. I can imagine how many people will be buying them today and yesterday.

Godspeed brother. I wish I could go to the Staples today myself.

Absolutely gutting news. It is also remarkable how much he was an advocate for the WNBA, even saying there were three women who could compete in the NBA right now. I wonder if that was him saying to his daughter that she could do it too.

The company I work for is LA based and there was a big, behind the scenes debate on if we should run a social media post to honor him. Lots of female leadership(and cool guys). Kobe's legacy is for sure complicated. We did do a post last night but it was more of a message about how precious life is.

After watching Jerry West yesterday I am now 100% convinced that Kobe Bryant and NOT Jordan is the next NBA logo.

Other than Kuzma, I don't really know what they have that will be seen as appealing. They're behind the barrel in terms of adding future picks because most of them went to New Orleans.

I don't think they are going to get a starter but I am sure maybe packaging 2nd rouders or future firsts along with Kuzma they can get someone of value.

There is also the buyout market where I'm sure guys would want to go there once they are let go by a team

I hope the Lakers win the title this year (unless it's against the Celtics). Granted, this feeling will likely pass by the time the playoffs come around and the Kobe heartbreak has faded.

The Clippers are pretty tits. Pretty soon they need to start playing together regularly if they want to take on the best teams at the end. In theory they are the best but they aren't close to passing the eye test yet as a top team.

Lakers have a few issues. Need a serious wing defender and a 3rd true scoring option to run with the first unit. PG Makes sense but I would prefer a true SG. Lebron at his best just smashes to the hoop either puts the ball in the hole, or kicks it out to a spot up guy.

China's decision to pull sponsorships and television coverage because Rockets GM Daryl Morey tweeted support for Hong Kong sovereignty in October is believed to have cost the NBA anywhere between $150 million and $200 million, league sources said.

    ESPN link

Team is generally underachieving, based on regular season success, but this is likely the inevitable nail in his coffin.

    It was tasteful.

Here's another cool Kobe vid to check out. A nice editing of MJ and Kobe: https://twitter.com/naima/status/122...290759168?s=20

Kobe was the best player since Jordon, I don't think that's particularly debatable.

Was the best player since MJ because of LeBron or is the best since MJ?

Kobe is still the best since MJ. I'm of the opinion that Kobe is a greater all-time basketball player than LeBron. Now if LeBron adds another title or two then I would need to re-assess. LeBron's career is still being written but at the moment, he's no Kobe. And I felt that way and said the same thing in here at the time of Kobe's retirement.

It is debatable about Kobe even being the best excluding LeBron. Tim Duncan is at least in the debate.

I lean Kobe myself, but Duncan definitely is in the conversation.

As for including LeBron, Bron is better than Kobe. But that is very marginal.

True, but who's side does that support? LeBron formed a super team and went 2 out of 4 for titles in Miami. And for his other title he had Kyrie. Kobe had Shaq, and then in his last 2 he had a more normal team with no other all world type guys (Pau Gasol was good but not that good). Now LeBron won a shit load of regular season and playoff games in a weak Eastern Conference in years when he didn't have a great team around him, but never could win a title like that. What Kawhi did last year was a more impressive title run than any that LeBron has ever had. So I would said Kobe has done more with less when it comes to titles.

LeBron is the more talented well-rounded player but is less clutch and doesn't have that killer instinct that Kobe and Jordon had, or their skill level as a shooter. I'll take Kobe and Jordon over LeBron because ultimately LeBron's skill has proven to only get him so far. Those other guys were better winners. And this isn't the NFL where a QB's titles are so largely dependent on other guys. In this sport, one or two players can push you to a title.

Did you really try to play off that Kyrie is the same as Shaq?!?

what kawhi did last season was insanely impressive, but given what the raptors have managed to do this season, without him there, and coming off a title win, i at least pause to contemplate just how much load bearing leonard was actually doing.

Not at all. Kyrie is an elite player though so when we're matching up who had who on their team as Perc suggested, it isn't exactly in Mr. Super Team's favor.

all signs point to probably not. it's ridiculous what a night and day team the sixers are when looking at them away and home. it's like something gets lost the moment they step outta south philly.

I can see that cautious assessment, but you certainly need someone who has that experience of sealing the deal to get you over the top. I think the experience they gained during the run is paying dividends this season for the remaining guys.

Kobe was the best player since Jordon, I don't think that's particularly debatable.

I remember playing the Duncan > Kobe card back when I was a Kobe hater. I get that their careers on paper are very similar in terms of accolades but it's a lame argument. I mean okay, maybe I'm being biased against big men. Duncan was 5 inches taller and played really great fundamental basketball. Kobe was an actual baller, a guy you would come out to see because of his all time skills at the game. Duncan was not. I don't think comparing their careers on paper is that meaningful, especially when they have more or less the same résumé. We're all old enough to have lived in this era of basketball. Do you really think Tim Duncan was greater for his era than Kobe based on what you witness/experienced in their 20 year careers? I don't.

When it comes to LeBron, 5 > 3. Simple math. If LeBron ends his career with only 3 titles (I would bet on him winning a 4th but we can't count on that), despite being the physically gifted freak that he is, I'm sorry but that's a worse career than Kobe's. Being great in great moments matters. Winning titles matters. This is the team sport above all others where 1 player can put the team on their back. Put Kobe's heart in LeBron's body and he would win 8 titles.

There is a strong chance I will change my tune if LeBron wins a title in LA, wins another Finals MVP. Until then, we can only debate the reality of what his career has been so far, which is not as impressive as Kobe's.

Kobe Bryant scored 7,147 more points than Tim Duncan in his (regular season) career. That's the difference between the 4th highest scorer of all time and 14th.

And Duncan had twice as many rebounds. There is more to basketball than scoring…

Duncan also never played with anyone as good as Gasol (prime Robinson would have been but not the old Robinson he got); let alone as good as Shaq.

For LeBron, 9 > 7. I am much more impressed with making the finals and then losing twice than losing in the Conference Semis once and winning one title.

In a 2 year stretch, you would be more impressed if your team lost back to back NBA Finals than if they won 1 title and lost in the conference semis? That is bizarre and I could not disagree more.

Awards wise he edges out Kobe and stats wise he’s efficiently better yes, rebounding too. But Kobe was better at scoring, assisting and was a all around better basketball player.

Duncan was a system player with quality surrounding players, Kobe had 3 seasons of shaq. No other dominant players just role players ok maybe Gasol was better than a role player.

I feel like Shaq should be in this conversation. He won 4 titles. Was finals MVP 3 times. Scoring Champion. 14 time All NBA. 3 time all defensive team.

Lakers lose to the small Rockets, who then get battered by Suns. Think by the time Lakers play Rockets again they should work them out.

The plan by the Rockets is well and good but it's going to suffer the same damn result: they're going to be on fumes and have nothing left in the tank for the playoffs.

It would be poetic justice in some ways if Dallas and Houston square off in the first round and Luka and the Mavs show that you can have a ball dominate-type player but that being less shameless and creating an offense around that type of player that has layers to it can actually work.

I haven't caught the Slam Dunk contest in probably 5 years, that was really good. It's crazy how much higher guys can jump nowadays compared to 10-20 years ago.

Yea, excellent dunk contest tonight, and 3-point contest for that matter. You can say what you want about the scoring and who should have won, but all that doesn't really matter. It was a great display of dunks. And I'm happy Jones won.

Jones had the best overall dunks quite easily. I think Gordon's 1-hand 360 may have been the best dunk overall. The 1-hand factor is just really impressive to me. Degree of difficulty is real.

EDIT Forgot Jones got 2 nines and Gordon got 3.

Hopefully with Gasol we might be able to get a rebound or two. Getting eaten up in there.

Going to be hard to beat you guys. You're looking so good on both ends of the floor. We might be second seed, but I put the Celtics in a better position against you guys and even then still getting beat by you. Playoffs are playoffs sure, but your boys have enough experience that I can see their regular season success continuing.

Yea, having Gasol out is killing you guys.
Hopefully after last year’s playoffs they learned how to close teams out.
Bucks, to me, are the best team in the league. They got a great bench to go along with a strong starting 5.

    You mean Frederico

But yeah I get it. When he came back after his child's birth. Man couldn't stop hitting 3s the rest of the playoffs.

Anyways, good game. Raps will have to figure out some new approach because limiting Giannis wasn't enough.

LOL at stopping Giannis. He had foul trouble yesterday and still put up an above average line and they were resting him in-game on a back to back.

Giannis is arguably the greatest player on the planet. He is unquestionably the most important player in terms of NBA landscape. The Bucks should win the title this year and Giannis should be the unanimous MVP.

I would happily take a Lakers title this year but Giannis is the MVP of the league by a mile.

Good showing for the first of many matchups for Luka and Zion last night.

Tired = out of shape to me. He could hardly get up and down the floor at the end of the 1st half.

Well, it was his first back-to-back of the season and he's not even 20 games into his NBA career after a long layoff. I'm not that hung up on it.

Jared Dudley on the Clippers-Lakers rivalry: “It’s huge. It’s a good rivalry. It’s a little fun. It’s not like a serious rivalry. It’s not like they they have any banners hanging up. Trust me, I would know, I played for them.”

Jordan would have never allowed some virus to detail the NBA in the 90s. Just shows how weak LeBron is
