I haven't really listened to anything for a few months... nothing sounds great coming out of laptop speakers. But that was just wonderful.

That is definitely one of the better Metallica songs in decades.

Which of the big four will call it quits first? They're all in their 50s by now. Megadeth seems the most prolific.

My guess would probably be Slayer, especially if for some reason Gary Holt can no longer pull double-duty between Slayer and Exodus.

I say Slayer. They're already on their last leg and as a band that stayed relatively unchanged for so long, there was never a real "nostalgia" era like Anthrax had when Joey came back. Now their classic drummer is done with 'em and Jeff is dead. Can't imagine there's too much left for them.

Anthrax have sort of found a new lease on life(though I'm kinda iffy on their new material), Megadeth is Dave Mustaine and he'll never stop making music, and Metallica will never stop until they physically can't anymore. Or Lars and James finally have enough of each other, but I can't see that ever happening if it hasn't yet.

I would honestly love to hang out with lars to see how long it would take to punch him in the face. I really think this premise could make an amazing reality bet tv show with proceeds going to charity.

If you make it, you win a bunch of money. Otherwise Lars gets to punch you in the face after.

The plus side is he's probably a wimp, so it's more like a love tap.

Taking a shot in the face from a drummer ( a real drummer) is ill advised.

Not really. Their last two albums are pretty much Prog Rock in the vein of King Crimson. Which is cool, but their last album(Pale Communion) just felt flat to me. It doesn't have as much of the Rock side and is a lot more soft. But not in the same beautiful way that Damnation was.

Heritage is a great album, though.

Going to see Devy in Sydney next year. Wooo.

Will have to replace the lack of DT - The Astonishing tour in Oz or the 25th anniversary I&W tour that Europe is getting.

Also, new Metallica came out today. I like it so far and I am unsure how I feel about liking it.

The new Metallica is some of the best work they've done in a while. Probably their best since And Justice For All or The Black Album.

You must not actually like Metallica.

All true Metallica fans take pride in hating each successive album even more than the last.

I heard a about 2 minutes of a single on the radio. The production sounds really good and Kirk's solo was on point. They'll never be able to go back in time and produce the quality of the albums like Master, And Justice, and Black. That's ok though. One thing I hate is when a band says "Our new record sounds more like the stuff people said they wished we still sounded like so 20 years later we're going to try and pull that off". It rarely ever works because you can't force that shit. You can't go from being 57 to 25 and have the same ability and have the same mentality when writing that music. Or when a band says "This is the heaviest record we've ever done" and you hear it and you're like, yeah you're old as fuck of course you'd think this was super heavy lol.

While it usually doesn't create the exact same vibe, I do think there are bands who have had genuine returns to form. Metallica just falls for the same trap many bands do when they say they're going back: they can't shake mainstream rock habits.

As a metal elitist, a non-metal fan enjoying the new Metallica record is enough for me to not buy it.

(this was a tongue-in-cheek post. I will probably download it eventually)

A lot of stuff I've enjoyed has come out this year, but off the top of my head, I'd recommend the new Meshuggah, Gojira, and Avenged Sevenfold albums

Gojira's Magma is great. Took me a couple listens but I love it now. Not as heavy as I'd like but damn good. Also got to see them live about 2 months ago.

Insomnium released a new album called Winter's Gate thats one 40 minute song. Its good and great for a long car ride but not too practical to listen unless you have the time.

Karybdis' Samsara is really good and I posted about it this thread when it came out earlier this year.

Haven't listened to too much stuff that came out this year I guess.

How do you guys go about finding new music? I tend to have the same dozen or so artists I listen to regularly and am definitely worried I am missing a heap of awesome music.

Either from news sites (like Blabbermouth, Loudwire) or from going to shows and coming across opening bands that I enjoy. If neither of those is an option, try going on Pandora and typing in a few bands you like. They'll make a station for you and add a few similar bands.

Turns out Spotify has a daily mix button which apparently does a similar thing. Listened to a few Scandinavian prog bands I've never heard of before.

Been listening to Gojira's Magma the last three weeks steadily as well as Whitechapel's "Mark of the Blade" again, which I'd misplaced and damn near bought again until I found it last week.
As far as finding new music, yeah, Pandora is helpful - found some stuff awhile back I hadn't heard of at the time, and sometimes browsing allmusic's artist profiles with artists similar to, just clicking around and listening to stuff related to that which I like.

Arjen Anthony Lucassen's new Ayreon album dropped today... fucking love it.

I am going to have to listen to some Epica at some point as well as I love Simone Simons voice.

    Been a while...

Finally got to see Devy in all his glory few months ago. 2017 is awesome, have Dream Theater 25 year I&W anniversary show in 2 months and then Mike Portnoy is doing The Shattered Fortress tour in November. 12 Step Suite in its entirety, woooo!

    Yeah, shut up Simon

Seriously, everyone should check out Holy Roar! The stuff they put out is great.

    Other bands worth looking at;

    Svalbard

    Employed to Serve

    Helpless

    Wren

    Ohhms

Have any of you heard of In Search Of Sun? My mate's band, I think they're reasonably well known in the UK now.

Their video for The World Is Yours is fucking brilliant, don't think much effort had to go into it but the song syncs up perfectly with the video from some Bollywood movie.

Only listened to Wren and Ohhms so far, but both of those were pretty sick. Wren was very much like an old school Mastodon but heavier.

Integrity is classic. It's a trip to see them lumped in with metal bands nowadays.

DT was sensational. Seeing A Change of Seasons live was worth it alone but Images and Words end to end and mixed hit sets were brilliant. Still buzzing.

    Also enjoying The Hirs Collective too. Mad, frenzied album with about 30 tracks around 1 to 2 minutes long;

    And another band called They Live We Sleep. Can't find any Youtube videos but they're on Spotify, as well as Bandcamp with a "name your price" downloadable album;

Just tweeted about this a few minutes ago. I never liked Damageplan past one song and Hellyeah was always garbage in my eyes, but Pantera are legendary. Vinnie had a punchy, hard-hitting yet groovy style that carried the sound of Pantera to greater heights than it would have been otherwise. The duo of he and his brother Dime was great. It's damn shame he had to go, and fairly young, too, but at least he got to enjoy a majority of his life unlike his brother, and assuming he got to die of some sort of natural causes(if not health deterioration from heavy drinking). At least now the two are reunited in death.

Very sad. If you would have told me 20 years ago that Phil would outlive Dime and Vinnie, I'd have called you crazy.

How isn't that Meshuggah manages to still push the bar after all these years? I thought Catch Thirty Three was the peak, but they they hit with Koloss which was almost like a reinvention of their sound. Finally getting around to The Violent Sleep of Reason, and only two tracks in, they've fucking done it again.

It's been a moment since anyone's posted in this thread. I recently got a Spotify account, and I've been going a bit crazy downloading a bunch of new and old stuff. About a week or two ago I got on this kick of downloading a bunch of stuff from my formative Metal years as a young teenager. Super nostalgic.
    Some samples:

Eh, I forgot you can't post multiple videos anymore. Maybe I'll post a random song a day or something. But regardless, Origin is a fucking badass Deathgrind band that all should hail.

I used to use a site called darklyrics to find lyrics to obscure bands, and I used to read other band names and wanted to listen to them. Now thanks to Spotify I can do that and check them out, maybe that's what I'll do tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder Psycho!

Posting this because A) I was listening to it and it's a great instrumental intro that focuses on one sick, groovy riff, and B) one of the comments mentions it would be a great intro to a wrestling show, and I don't think I could agree with something more.

Lacuna Coil's first song from their new album came out late last week:

Great to see them get heavier with every album they release, it also seems to have done wonders for Andrea's vocals as well. Cristina is, well, Cristina

Good stuff. Kinda got out of listening to them for awhile a few years ago - at least regularly, but the Delirium album got me interested again. Can't think of a bad album of theirs.

Was supposed to see Tool at the Epicenter festival, but the day got cancelled cause of storms. Not a huge huge Tool fan so wasn't completely disappointed, but a majority of people there walked around saying they only got tickets to see Tool. Major bummer for them.

Wow: Every TOOL Album Has Already Cracked The iTunes Top 10

This is the first time Tool has ever made their music available to own digitally, so it makes sense that within less than a day all the albums made it into the Top 10 album charts with Ænima performing the best, taking the number two spot, Lateralus, 10,000 Days, and Undertow taking number four, five and six respectively, with the Opiate EP coming in at number eight.
    Sounds about right.

Gotta admit though, I'm ignorant to the whole itunes download/purchase thing. I use spotify and so for 11 bucks a month I essentially own everything they offer, including of course the now available Tool catalog. Perhaps itunes is nonetheless a better service somehow, guess I'm just not seeing it.

Anywho ... woot woot. Has been a pretty epic day for listening as all is finally right in the music world.

Just did ArcTanGent festival this weekend and it was one of the best weekends of music I've seen. Cult of Luna, 65daysofstatic, Bossk, Russian Circles, Meshuggah etc. The list goes on. Ridiculously heavy.

Nightwish released the first single 'Noise' from their upcoming album 2 days ago. Already 1 million hits on Youtube for the official video:

Video of the year and the song ain't bad either.

Was on a Cradle of Filth kick recently, then discovered Devilment. I'm listening to their album The Great and Secret Show and am loving it so far.

That sounds dangerously close to deathcore for my tastes, yet...I can't stop banging my head.

Sounds very powerful and driving. For what I love metal - you will not get bored and will not fall asleep.

What can you say about this symphonic power metal?
