Well, they were kinda miserable because of the idiots coming in for autographs, but I stopped and told and each of them that I was a big fan of their work and they actually cracked smiles. Troy loved my old school, beat to shit Mastodon T-shirt.

Going to see this in a few weeks time. Only one cinema in all of Australia showing it, it seems, and it just so happens to fall within a few days of mine and my best mates birthdays.

Devy is touring here soon as well, bummed that I am going to be interstate when he is here

Live at Luna Park was excellent. Highlight was definitely Mangini drum solo. Ridiculous.

And new Dream Theater album today as well, whooo

So . . . Kirk Windstein left Down to focus on Crowbar, which from what I've read was basically crumbling around him. Evidently the guy who is the bassist for Down now was the bassist for Crowbar also, and it looks like Down chose sides.

My understanding also is that Kirk was pretty formative to Down's sound. Soooooooo . . . yeah. There's that.

I'm kinda bummed to hear that he's leaving Down, but at the same time I'm pretty stoked that there's a new Crowbar album coming soon.

Never really got into Crowbar, but hey, to each his own. Kinda intrigued to see where Down's sound goes, though.

Kirk's replacement is from a band called Honky, who opened for Down earlier this year. I thought they sounded killer, so I'm definitely interested to see what the new guitarist can bring to the table.

So, since I'm out of touch, I decided to download Ghost B.C.'s most recent album Infestissumam. And while I haven't listened to much of it, what I have heard impresses me.

I actually have been listening to Down a lot this past month. I finally decided to try and move with the times as basically just stuck with the bands I loved when younger. I was a huge Pantera fan and just thought i'd check out Down since I saw they've got some new stuff coming out soon. The Over the Under album is fucking amazing.

Will have to try moving with the times and listen to some of the other bands you've been raving about in here. Not Mastodon though they are shit.

That's more or less what my mate said to me when I returned his Mastodon cds back. He went a bit mental as well when I told him Machine Head's The Blackening album was shit too. Shouldn't have surprised him though I only ever enjoyed the Burn My Eyes album.

Mastodon are alright if overrated a bit.

But Machine Head's The Blackening is awesome. So, there's that issue to be sorted out.

It may have been due to him overhyping it to me as he lent me it saying it was one of the greatest albums ever. As I say never really been a Machine Head fan but I just couldn't get into it.

Meh, I was never really into them until I'd heard The Blackening. Then again, I also wasn't big into Maiden until I'd heard Brave New World . . .

Each to their own. I've always loved Maiden the only albums I dislike of their theirs is Fear of The Dark (the title track is one of the few bright spots) and the Blaze Bayley albums which surprised me as I liked Wolfsbane.

Maiden's grown on me since Brave New World, as I kind of figured if they can put out an album that solid, surely there's more to be found. Lo and behold, I've found a lot of the stuff I like from them. I was disappointed with the following album, but in the meantime have "acquired" enough of their songs that I'm content to (and able to support my) respect (for) them.

But anyway, Machine Head's putting out some of the best recent/modern metal from my perspective. That's not saying necessarily a whole lot given the general state of metal (and to that end, music in general), but I think it's fairly accurate.

What particular Maiden tracks did you like? I like the Powerslave album best although i'll always have a soft spot for Seventh Son of A Seventh Son as that was the album that got me into them.

Basically anything epic by them. Love "Fear of the Dark," "Number of the Beast," "The Trooper." I mean, songs that are basically staples to any self-appointed metalhead. Not going to say I'm a Maiden expert by any stretch, but certainly any number of beloved songs of theirs deserves attention. Wish the same could be said for Judas Priest, who in my opinion has a definite dearth in their catalogue in comparison.

Mastodon's latest was pretty weak, ill admit that. Blood Moutain and leviathan are masterpieces though.

Machine Head are fantastic, but their albums can be very hit or miss. Blackening was sick, though. My favorite band to see live too.

Has anyone heard the new Monster Magnet album "Last Patrol"? I'm not sure I would classify them as metal, more rockish, but certainly worth the listen. It's up there in my favorite 2013 releases.

Nails - Abandon All Life (chaotic & abrasive with hard ass riffs thrown in)
Unleashed - Shadows in the Deep (class dm you may already be familiar, but including just in case)
Seraphim - The Light in the Distance (under appreciated metal from mississippi for fans of shit like kylesa, botch, converge, etc.)
Aquilus - Griseus (mellow neoclassical w/ a lot of black metal elements)
Deathspell Omega - Drought (awesome fucked up black metal from france)

Lamb Of God always puts on a killer show. Got to see them earlier this year myself.

If you haven't done so already, check out the remastered edition of As The Palaces Burn that came out a couple weeks ago. Usually these "remasters" are mere cash grabs, but in this case Josh Wilbur really did make the album sound better (not that it sounded bad at all), especially Vigil.

Did manage to pick it up. And it 100% sounds better than the original recording. Easily worth whatever I spent on Amazon - one of those bands I don't mind acquiring through monetary exchange. I'm also eagerly anticipating the documentary surrounding the trial.

This is the first time I've seen a band on two ends of their touring cycle, but all in all, well worth the money spent. Third time seeing LOG, second seeing KsE (first with Jesse singing), and was duly impressed by Testament (who I've just never really gotten into) and Huntress (who I expected very little out of, but was definitely pleasantly surprised). All around, it was in the upper tier of shows I've been to.

I'm a huge Monster Magnet fan, i consider them "stoner-hard rock" yet in their music there's bits of "metalish riffs".
I know the term "stoner" is very limited, yet i think it defines them well and their major influences like "Sabbath" or "Hawkwind", it owes so much to psychedelec rock but also owes lots to metal...

Monster Magnet had an interesting cover version of "Into the Void" on the second N.I.B. Sabbath tribute album. But otherwise, I've never been huge on them.

Faith No More's version of War Pigs is a rarity in that it is actually better then the original though.

I remember when I initially bought the first Nativity in Black, and I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaated it. Hated all of it, basically, except the White Zombie version of "Children of the Grave." Slowly warmed up to most of it. Biohazard's cover of "After Forever" is decent, and COC's "Lord of this World" is fucking badass. Even the Ugly Kid Joe cover is semi-decent. The only one I hate is the 1000 Homo DJ's cover of "Supernaut."

The second Nativity in Black, though . . . yeesh. Some crap on it.

The third one is just a fan made thing. Honestly wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah the second one was bad which is why I didn't realise there was a third thought they must have given up on the idea. Agree about the 1000 Homo Dj's track though and yeah probably is the only track I skip on it,

The stuff with Barnes is basically all excellent. The stuff with Corpsegrinder is hit and miss. Vile, Bloodthirst, and Kill I dig.

I actually disagree with this. I mean, I would say some of the Corpsegrinder stuff isn't as good, but that's more to do with how long CC's been a band. I think the best material with Corpsegrinder is better than the best of the Barnes-era. Corpsegrinder's just a better vocalist. That said, The Bleeding is one of their best albums, but I think I'd put Vile above that.

I could see that. Corpsegrinder has been with them longer by now, surely. Aside from that, thought, 'tis subjective.

Regardless, their track record is still better than a lot of the more mainstream acts out there.

Quite a few announcements lately. 2014 looks to be an amazing year to be a metal head. This year we get new In Flames, Machine Head, Insomnium, Edguy, Gojira, and Arch Enemy that I'm personally looking forward to.

Edit: Demo of the new Metallica song they started playing live.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiOtev3rEKI

Arch Enemy announced their new album will feature a new singer. A different chick from the band The Agonist. I'm willing to give it a change. They debut a new video for a song from the new album tomorrow.

Dave Brockie (aka Oderus Urungus) from Gwar has reportedly died at the age of 50. I did have the pleasure of seeing Gwar twice and they put on an insanely fun show.

I had heard some rumors about Dave Brockie and Don Drakulich(Oderus and Sleazy P. Martini) pretty much stealing GWAR from the original guys who started it and not paying the rest of the guys what they deserved(why Slymenstra supposedly left). Hearing about these rumors kind of soured me on GWAR for a long time, but they will always hold a special place in my heart.

Brockie may have been a cock in real life(if the rumor is true), but Oderus Urungus is a character that I will always love. Proud to say I was able to see these guys four times before it became an impossibility.

Tim Lambesis interview before he heads off to prison. He discusses everything...EVERYTHING. Steroids, infidelity, loss of faith, the hitman thing, adopting kids...it's intense. I'm glad he got a chance to open up so completely before heading in for 6 years.

Love finding old videos like this. SlipKnoT debut Ozzfest performance back in 1999. The rawness of their show - just a curtain and 9 guys crammed on stage - is awesome. LOVE all the feedback too, it's so gloriously screechy.

The new album from The Haunted (with Marco Aro back on vocals) is worth a listen as well.

I actually thought Subliminal Verses had like 3 or 4 songs that were a step in the right direction. The Blister Exists was awesome. Same sentiment for All Hope is Gone, which other than that song, somewhat Psychosocial, and Gematria, is garbage. Iowa was the last solid album throughout, but I have yet to hear this new one. Heard nothing but good things from people who didn't even like Slipknot before.

Wisconsin Death Trip and Machine were epic. I actually thought Start a War and Cannibal were pretty awesome, too. I know they got lumped in with nu-metal a lot, but other than Shadow Zone, I always considered them more of an Industrial Thrash/Death Metal band. A lot of excellent songs.

The weird thing is I was just joking around about going as Wayne Static for Halloween, and now here we are. Really sad news.

    R.I.P. Wayne Static

You're missing out. Arguably the worst song on the CD, and that's not an insult to the song.

I'd love to listen to Static-X in memory, but unfortunately I am listening to all my music in artist order. I started at the beginning of October, and am still on the letter A.

Though in keeping with the thread, I just went through Anal Cunt. I used to think it was just noise, but there are a few quality songs spread about.

I was supposed to see static x like 2 months ago but the show got cancelled a few days before. Then I was supposed to see them play with Powerman 5000 and American Head Charge and wayne died the weekend before the show. Made the whole thing even crazier.

Anyone been listening to the new Machine Head album? I really like it and its growing on me too. Not sure its better than the last two though.

Not yet. I need to give it a listen sometime soon, because I loved the first Ziltoid. Haven't heard any opinions on it yet, either.

I completely forgot about it till a mate from work reminded me. Listening to it now.

Didn't realise it was a double CD with one purely DTP and the other Ziltoid sequel. Digging it so far... looking forward to Jericho on Dark Matters when I eventually get to it.

Fuck me silly, the new Dir En Grey album - Arche - is another masterpiece from them. I love the fact that they've released several of the tracks a year at a time, building to the completed album. This song, Revelation of Mankind is particularly amazingly painful:

So what was everyone's album of the year? I really can't decide between the new releases from Machine Head, Insomnium, and Starkill.

I was a friends the other day and he had the new Machine Head album on sounded pretty good. It surprised me because I've only ever really enjoyed the Burn My Eyes album. But then I tend to think music finished after 2000 as I've not really got into anything since then.

I haven't heard that album. I was never a fan of Machine Head until The Blackening. Their last 3 albums have been great.

Mine would be Slipknot - .5: The Grey Chapter. Machine Head, Unearth, and Revocation released strong albums in 2014 as well.

Slipknot's was great, Mastodon's new album was certainly better than the last few, but Dir En Grey steals top album for me. Nothing even came close to touching it.

havent listened fully to Machine Head's yet, but it sounds like more of the same. Not complaining, either, I fucking love Machine Head for that exact sound. Easily my favorite live band too.

I really haven't listened to much new metal this year. I've always been iffy on Machine Head, haven't heard Slipknot's new album yet, and never really followed Dir En Grey. Heard Unearth's new album is pretty good, but I'm rushing to hear it.

Still need to get around to hearing Ziltoid 2, though.

Excited for the new Wednesday 13 and Marilyn Manson albums. Pre-ordered them last month. January will be a happy month for me.

I think people think Manson hasn't been good in about 15 years but his last album Born Villain was really good, and he put on an amazing show when I saw him in Montclair a few years ago.
