Go back to just the human polls and bowls games pre-BCS (Rose: B10 v P12; Sugar: SEC vs Open; Orange: B12 vs Open; Fiesta: Open vs Open). That is basically an 8 team playoff but without the seeding.

After that, 1 title game between the best two teams. Would force the teams to try to win the bowl game to get a chance to play for the title.

Nick Saban may be a great coach, but I still think Bear Bryant was the best college coach ever.

Wow. You can't spell Toxic without the T.

Tennessee thought that rollercoaster to hell we've been riding for 12 years wasn't going fast enough I guess.

    And there you go.

What a fucking joke. I don't even care anymore. I'm done with this school.

Josh Heupel is going to be eaten alive by the SEC.

Give it two years, and they’ll be knocking on Hugh Freeze’s door.

A lot of insiders in the program believe this is nothing more than a fill in position. You can't hire a decent coach when you can't even tell them what kind of sanctions they'll be dealing with. Heupel is AD White's boy and is more than happy to fill in and make more money than he ever dreamed of until Tenn is in position to hire a real coach.

Although if he manages to do well I'm sure he'll be allowed to stay. But I have no faith in that. He's only there because everyone else said "fuck no."

But I just have no interest in the program going forward now. Bored with, tired of and pissed at too much for too long.

I’m telling you, they wanted Freeze. But you can’t say you’re letting a guy go cuz of recruiting violations..... and immediately turn around and hire a guy who has recruiting violations.

Their plan is in motion. Too bad a decent amount of that historic recruiting class has entered the transfer portal.

Oh hell yeah they want Freeze. And what's more is that he wants them. Just not under these conditions which is totally understandable. People have been calling Tenn a dumpster fire for so long that calling it one now just isn't fitting.

It's more like a chemical fire at a medical waste disposal site that nobody can figure exactly how to put out.

Plus Godzilla. Godzilla is there breathing fire on the whole thing.

Something I had completely missed..... Josh Heupel finished 2nd in the Heisman voting in 2000. He beat out ppl such as Drew Brees, LaDanian Tomlinson, and Micheal Vick. The only guy he could beat?

Chris Weinke, the Heisman Trophy winner.

On a completely unrelated note, Heupel and Tennessee just fired Chris Weinke from his role as QBs coach at Tennessee.

It’s the small things in life that makes me smile.

With EA basically putting out the same version of Madden for the past 4 years, I am wary. I did really like these games though.

So SCOTUS smacked the shit out of the NCAA’s pathetic and transparent attempt to classify its athletes as amateurs.

Now pay the athletes and give me my damn “NCAA Football” video game for the consoles. For real, you don’t even really need to pay the players for their likenesses because by season 3 of my franchise, they’re all aged out anyways…

I know this isn't a video game thread, but nothing was better than starting Dynasty as a OC/DC and then seeing which crap program you can turn into a national title contender. One year I had a ten season run of National titles with Wake Forest.

My best run was turning video game Clemson into what real life Clemson/Alabama has become. Had a run of 4 or 5 straight unbeaten seasons in a row. I think it was 2 recruiting classes that never lost a game.

Another really fun one was I changed teams every four years with the goal of trying to win the NT with my new team within the four years. That kept stuff fresh and the team I left was set up for greatness so they would become the "final boss" that I had to beat out. The team I left almost always won the NT and Heisman my first year gone.

He won't leave this year but I bet he leaves after this season. All these NILs are going to be a huge headache for coaches. Plus the transfer portal. Might as well just coach the pros.

Dabo ain’t going to the pros, he’ll stick around at Clemson until his mega-deal runs out then retire because of “health reasons”. In college, at least, the head coach calls the shot in a dictatorship by virtue of the player’s scholarship. In the pros, the players call the shots.

I’m on record as saying that Urb lasts 2-3 sub-500 seasons before his health problems “flare up again” and force him to resign…

The players run college football now too. The boosters are paying them in the open and they can transfer anytime they want.

That is why I think he will take the giant contract that the NFL offers before he walks away. Grab one last paycheck without risking his legacy as a college coach.

I agree Urban will be gone before the 2023 season starts

Not sure I fully understand the why.

Oklahoma and Texas were the big dogs of the Big 12, made money hand-over-fist and with the playoff expanding to 12 both were essentially guaranteed spots in said playoff field.

Now, you’re in the thick of the SEC, fighting for the scraps left behind by Alabama.

Are they going to just run with the 8 they still have? Will they add decent but not exactly headline names like UH, Boise St, UCF, Cincinnati, or likewise? Or will they just collapse as their remaining members look for greener pastures elsewhere?

Money is still a factor, as they will make more. Maybe not tons more, but they’ll make more.

I gotta be honest….. if you take the delusional fans out of it, I don’t think A&M the school, or the rational fans give a flying fuck about Texas joining the SEC. They’ve already been in the conference for 10 years, and are currently better suited to make a run at a National Title than Texas for the next 5 years or so. Also, Texas, while being a big fish in the Big 12, weren’t exactly doing a whole lot of dominating. OU was. Texas essentially had to follow and hitch their wagon to Oklahoma to leave for the SEC……. Where they are going to be in the middle of the pack. Oklahoma I think could compete for the SEC crown immediately….. Texas is a ways away.

Also, I can’t take Texas seriously for how many times they are “back”, only to never not actually be back. Plus, whoever turned horns down into a penalty…. Soft as absolute shit.

A&M is better than UT. Just give me that game every year again.

SEC extended offers to both schools.

Got to admit not a fan of this. SEC didn't really need those schools. Honestly didn't need Missouri and A&M either.

I guess UT and Oklahoma can make more money but I don't think this helps them long term having to fight the likes of Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, etc each year.

It is so new they probably haven't even made decision but I wonder about the schedule. Is the SEC going to go to 9 conference games finally? I like the idea more if they expand to 9 so they play 7 conference games. Play their entire division every year and then a rotating two against the other side every year. Play every team once every 4 years that way.

West = Texas, TAMU, OU, Mizz, LSU, Ark, Miss, Miss St
East = Florida, Georgia, SC, Bama, Auburn, Tenn, Vandy, UK

This is an after effect of the NCAA losing control with NIL being a thing. You’re going to see a shift in conferences among the Power 5 to have a smaller amount of “super league” conferences. Which……. I’m actually ok with. Let all the big programs have their own seasons, their own titles. Let the schools that were in the Group of 5 have their own shit as well. Have proper playoffs. Go nuts.

I don't really care where the teams play. They have been moving around for 30 years at this point. What I think college football has to keep is that the regular season conference titles means something. That is what makes every game matter. Because even losing to a shitty team can cost your team the conference. So we shift that to "division titles"

Four 16 team Super Conferences (PAC, B10, ACC, SEC) make 8 division champs. Win or go home. That is your playoff. (If we really need more, I could handle 4 "wild card" who play the four worst division champs. 16 seems like too many but that is probably the real number. 8 division champs get the home games against the 8 wildcards.)

That could be pretty great combination of great games and a regular season that matters.

And then if I were the rest of the schools not involved, I would start our own single elimination 16 team playoff championship to determine the champion for old 'Group of 5' teams. Would be super easy to get a TV contract and it would make their late season games interesting all year long even if they take money to get destroyed by Bama or Clemson earlier in the year.

Texas is also a kindred spirit to Tennessee as a program. Both schools consider themselves elite and demand national championship level teams (Well Tenn used to. We've now been bad longer than any other point in history so reality is setting in) but the truth of the matter is a bit different.

Their AD'S immediate response to the news was that they wanted to be the only team from the state in the conference. That's a far cry from not giving a flying fuck. And they're fan base, at least what I heard locally here on Houston radio, was hardly ambivalent about the news.

And I'm not sympathetic to UT nor should anyone else be. They've for years made the bed they're lying in with delusional boosters and egomaniac administrators. But I'm also a mostly apathetic fan and so this has all been pretty funny. I'm glad to have the game back and have my fingers crossed that the move will help recruiting and that Sark can keep his head on straight long enough to turn things around. We shall see.

I have zero confidence in Sark but I do think UT in the SEC with a truly elite coach has a chance to be as good as anyone. They will spend any amount it takes. If they can just keep talent in the state, they are a top 10 program. It won't be easy and they could easily fall on their face like they have for the last decade but eventually someone will probably get it right.

They couldn’t keep the top spot and “run” the Big 12. They may compete in the SEC, but they are not nearly good enough to challenge for the top spot in it. Until Texas does something more than just win a random game that makes their fans go “Texas is back”, only to a week or two later find out that no, Texas is indeed not back, I can’t take them seriously as a potential conference champion, let alone anything higher.

For me, Texas is on par with the likes of Michigan and Tennessee right now. Living off their names and past glories, fan bases saying just wait cuz look at how great our recruits are and this is the year we put it together…….. without having really done anything worthwhile in at least a decade.

My rather uneducated and unscientific ranking of the new SEC:

    Alabama > Georgia/LSU > Oklahoma/Florida > the rest

To start this year upcoming, I believe it goes Georgia, Bama, A&M and Florida. I don’t know if LSU bounces back yet.

Depending on how this season goes, next year (after Big 12 lets them out early) Oklahoma probably slots into that third spot, unless either Florida or A&M have a massive year. Texas after all of those teams.

I think Georgia is going to be the big loser when this all shakes out. They are punching above their pay grade right now. All those elite recruits they are getting might look elsewhere. Historically, they have been chronic underachievers.

After a decade and a half of this bullshit it feels like the Tenn fanbase has finally decided that the fucked upedness is so ingrained, so institutional that it can no longer be fixed. No matter what head coach comes in, there will always be half of the university rooting against them because they want someone else. Recruits are scared. Coaches don't want the pressure. It's a dumpster fire that became a tire fire that can't be put out.

And I think we all know it now. There is no hype. No excitement. No belief that things will get better. The only hope left is just to not finish last. Not losing to vanderbilt is now our championship.

Tenn sneaking into the top 25 at 23 this week. The last couple weeks have been fun. Outscoring Mizz and SC 107 - 44.

Next up is Ole Miss. Lane Kiffin finally facing the school he left in the lurch 11 years ago. Not that anybody cares at this point. 11 years is like 12 coaches ago for us.

Game should be fun though. Should be 98 to 85. Something like that.

The final 2014 CFP poll (Dec 7), Alabama was 1st and Clemson was 17. For the first CFP ranking in 2015 (Nov 3), Clemson was ranked 1st and Alabama was 4th. So it’s been a while.

I’m so confident in that happening I’d put money on it. Even yesterday, I kept expecting the Tide to pull off the comeback.

That said, I’ll be pulling for another Alabama loss; the sport desperately needs some new blood in the playoffs.

Ugh this game is sloppy and awful. Qb fumbles, muffed punts. I really like our offensive system but don't really believe in the qb. Defense needs to leave a spy back. Designed qb run is killing us.

Well you guys got rolling on the last drive to end the half. Almost doubled your offensive yards for that game on that drive.

Still a half to go. Defense has rattled us a little bit. Both teams are a bit beat up and without players.

As someone who doesn't follow college football until the playoff, will Cincinnati moving to the Big 12 make it so they are taken more seriously? Oklahoma is also undefeated and are ranked 9th. With them and Texas leaving, I don't think the Big 12 will look that strong.

In the past I would say yes they would be taken more serious however the Big 12 is nothing like it used to be and they are losing Oklahoma and Texas.

Yes. Jumping from the AAC to the BIG-12 (a Power 5 conference) will help, even with Texas and Oklahoma bailing; an invite to the New Year Day Bowl package becomes much more accessible, even with the step up in competition. Go undefeated in the BIG-12, you’re probably making the four team playoff; dollars to doughnuts says we’re probably going to watch an undefeated Cincinnati miss it this year.

Yeah but I wonder how long Big 12 manages to remain a Power 5 conference. If they stay a power 5 then yeah good move for Cincy but Big 12 is not what it used to be.

Is that even possible, losing Power 5 status?

They already have. Oklahoma is undefeated and not even in the picture.

Yeah I think with all of the shuffling there is a chance of losing power 5

I can't imagine the teams coming in to replace Oklahoma and Texas are on the same level on a consistent basis. Cincy is doing well now. BYU has done well in the past and so has UCF and Houston but not on the same level as Oklahoma and Texas. It may stay a power 5 but nobody treats the same way as they used to.

So short of a massive exodus within one of the P5, no…

The Big East is a basketball conference. They don’t matter in football.

I'm just saying it's very possible for any conference to lose its power 5 status. But it matters less now that the BCS is gone. More about what schools get picked than what conference they belong in.

I’d like to take a moment today, before I fully immerse myself in NFL….. to laugh at Texas.

My brother now lives in Texas, and I called him as I do from time to time. Since I got his voicemail, I told him I was just calling to laugh at Texas.

It has been fun watching my Ole Miss team this year. Feel like they should have beat Auburn but good chance of ending 10-2 and a really nice bowl game. I will take it.

Dan Mullen out as Florida coach.

Good. Tennessee wanted him 5 years ago. His response was "could you guys wait? I want to hear from Florida first."

Fuck him and feed him fish heads.

As much as so many want to hate on Alabama and NIck Saban for their success, fuck I just gotta clap for this man taking up for his squad and his program..

Saban I can’t really hate. Neither Alabama itself. Their fans? I’m comfortably hating them.

    I echo this sentiment.

I would add that I also hate “SEC Fan”, you know, the fans of the middling/bottom feeding schools who cloak their school’s stench with heavy doses of the “We’re SEC” deodorant. No Tennessee/Florida/Arkansas fan, you can’t claim superiority when your program hasn’t been relevant in the last 8-10 years…

I prefer college football to the pros, shockingly enough, but am getting fatigued by the same four teams dominating and being permanent markered into the CFP every season. Watching the embarrassment of riches that the top 4-5 teams enjoy, being utterly stacked 2-3 deep at every position is not fun as a West Coast guy/PAC-10 fan. I really like it when 4 or 5 stars decide to go to schools where they can start/play/be THE guy. But I get it, if you’re a blue chip high school athlete with legitimate NFL aspirations, the logic of going to Alabama/Georgia/Clemson/Ohio State and being pushed every single rep by equally talented athletes is theoretically sound.

There’s also the bit where those schools are the best path into the NFL. Does it guarantee you success in the NFL, no. But it certainly makes your path a helluva easier if you can perform in that school.

Also….. if you’re watching college football to see who wins it all and is in the playoff, I think you’re watching for the wrong reason. While the whole “4 schools argument” is not always with merit (Bama and Clemson will be nowhere near the playoffs this year, assuming Bama loses to Georgia, which they will), the playoffs happen so far after the season itself, it’s a separate entity in my head.

This here, Rivalry week…. This is the best you’re getting for college football season. The chaos of Oregon beating OSU early and then losing to fucking Stanford. A&M, who massively underachieved this year but still took down Bama. All of these early season storylines that lead into things like Bedlam, OSU/Michigan (RIP Michigan) and the Egg Bowl.

That’s what college football season actually is.
