What's the appeal of Nick Gage?

I saw him "wrestle" last night against George South. What's the appeal of seeing light bulbs smashed over heads and backs, "cutting" with a pizza cutter, wrapping people up in fake barb wire, and slamming people on doors? Just seems like violence for violence sakes. I've seen a couple of other Gage matches on YouTube and they all seem to be the same match.

I guess it was an experience seeing it live but it was probably the weakest match on the card.

There's no real appeal beyond that niche audience having an outlet to praise whatever it is they're doing. The audience hasn't grown. It's the same crowd who were into XPW, CZW, now it's GCW. There's a market for that kind of wrestling. I'm not big on deathmatch wrestling but I enjoy it. My problem is I just never latched on to American deathmatch wrestling. I can sit here and watch Ryuji Ito v. Jun Kasai but put on Zandig v. Sick Nick Mondo and I just see my friends and I doing backyard wrestling--because we had a homeboy who would order FMW/Big Japan tapes and we thought ok if Onita and Mr Pogo, with no athletic ability in that man's body, can "wrestle" well shit so we can we! He also had a bunch of backyard wrestling tapes circa 1997-1998 and a lot of the BYW stuff was just what we see in GCW out of Nick Gage.

That's the business now lol, backyard wrestlers. Danielson, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, all backyarders.

Yeah I am not a fan of Gage. If people are into the death matches and all that shit then I guess I can see the appeal but I don't care for those matches.

There's good deathmatch wrestling, and then there's Nick Gage. I only like a few US/Canadian deathmatchers, MISAWA is ok, Necro Butcher and Madman Pondo depending on the year and opponents and country lol. Obviously going back to the days of Cactus and Terry Funk are great. My sons love the shit, my oldest son was a Moxley fan before dude was in Shield due to the CZW stuff.

For a massive horror fan, I do think it's weird I don't like blood in wrestling Then again I've been told I'm a weird guy by many people.

I get his appeal, but for me personally it's not exactly my flavor. But I must say, his matches do bring a different aura to shows. I've been to several events w/ him on the card and lord almighty the room becomes electric.

The main-main thing behind him is his story.

Hardcore wrestler who clinically died from a match to hardcore wrestler-turned convicted felon to returning wrestler and previously convicted felon. Dude had a rough life, but he made it through them. Plus he connects with fans in attendance, just getting the place amped up during his entrances. His wrestling is caca, but his overall appeal delves highly in respect for coming back from the closest thing to below rock bottom.
