At the risk of being too much of the 'we're just about there' guy, I can't help but agree. The young core will surely only mature and develop further, while we've got loads of kids in the pipeline clawing it out against one another in the usynt program and plying their own developments here and abroad. If we can just keep this continuity while hitting on that number 9 we haven't had since I suppose Jozy was in peak form and perhaps get a couple of our young CBs to really establish themselves then ya, 2026 is gonna be full of some pretty unreal hype. And I will absolutely be a part of that.

I mean, this time 4 years ago no one couldn't have predicted just how much guys like Dest, Musah, McKennie, Adams, and Aaronson were going to blossom and arrive. Let's just keep this train rolling.

Belgium are out. Didn't see that coming.

Mexico fired coach after missing out on advancing. Ouch.

That was a bit dramatic last night. Fair play to Japan. Beating Germany and Spain, losing to Costa Rica. Mad group.

Can't see much drama occurring today, but the knockouts start tomorrow!

Look at the Asian teams go. While we are the only ones from our region to move on.

South Korea through at the expense of Uruguay, so now only Brazil can go through the groups with a perfect record.

An aerial view of the controversial Japan goal simultaneously advanced the Japanese and knocked Germany the fuck out..

..showing that the tracking data was in fact correct after all, even if by the tiniest of imaginable margins.

Sorry about today guys but the Dutch were on form. You’ve given a good accounting of yourselves and got a good squad to build on for the future.

Defense lapses cost us today. we went at them and didn't just play defense. I have enjoyed that about this team at the cup. We went at people. 2nd youngest team. Undefeated in the group. I will take it. I can't wait to see how they do in 4 years here in the US at the next Cup.

Dutch bottled it in on those first two penalties. Congrats to Argentina though, after their early Saudi Arabia defeat and how good the Dutch have been, had my doubts. Sentimental favourite for Messi but as long as it’s not England lol….jokes.

As far as Brazil goes, as much as a nanny pamby wank Neymar is when he sells a gentle tap like he’s been shot, he does deliver why they held him back for the later pens is a bit beyond me. I sorta get it but I’m of the mind if you got good penalty takers then get them on first.

Dutch were one Van Nistelrooy and Van der Sar from a great team. A Sneijder wouldn't have hurt either.

And I think England beat France one game in three. It's all about how we deal with the pace of Mbappe and Dembele, because I think they can be got at the back.

But signs are pointing to a Argentina/Portugal final becuase FIFA think people want to see Messi and Ronaldo.
(And the Qatari royal family own PSG so will do FIFA over like a kipper again)

Argentina/Portugal would be lit. Messi vs Renaldo the obvious hype.

Early prediction but England/France 1-1 after normal/extra time but France win on penalties. No anti-English humour bias/there but just got a feeling they could cave under the pressure. If that turns out to be wrong then will fully accept and congratulate you guys but at the same time have to laugh at the media overhype if you fail not the team personally.

You got your French shirt at the ready? Practiced La Marseillaise?

England are a quarter final team. Given favourable draws (1990, 2018) or home advantage (1996, 2021) we can overperform, but that's our natural limit.
But imagine when the world cup expands to 48 teams and Scotland still fail to qualify

Actually did have a France 98/02 shirts at the time but they’ve since been in the Salvation Army clothes recycling since.

US writer Grant Wahl died while covering the game today. He was only 48 years old. Lots of conspiracy theories going on due to his support of the LBQT community and speaking out against things over at Qatar.

I’m not a soccer fan so I didn’t know that guy but RIP. If he was poisoned that would be so fucked up. He said he had bronchitis for a couple days so idk if there’s a poison that would have those symptoms. Curious to see what a poison expert would say and what happens with the body/autopsy.

Fuck FIFA. Fuck Qatar. Fuck the World Cup honestly.

It’s been one of the most interesting World Cup tourneys so far but also at the same time one of the most politically controversial ones. IMO FIFA made this bed with Qatar’s help and now they have to lie in that bed including those migrant workers that died building those stadiums and those fans that came over that now won’t get paid nor can buy booze in the stadiums despite Budweiser being the sponsor.

Hard to do for some I know but if you can take the politics aside, it’s definitely been one of the more interesting tournaments where at this point there’s no outright favourite and anyone can beat anyone else on the right day. This part I do like.

If these surprise football results happened anywhere else that was hosting it, think most fans would be praising it but in this case the shadow will always be there til this cup ends. FIFA have apparently shown regret (well according to Blatter) but what’s done is done and hopefully they are more careful about who should host in future.

At the very least probably should enjoy more football til this ends then next tournament hosted by a country more capable and equipped.

These are pretty weak comps so I will respectfully agree to disagree.

The NFL suspended Deshaun Watson for the civil suit against him so yes they care. And all the major American sports leagues are growing their interest in China. I'll be honest I don't know the extent of the NBA's business ties with them but just saying "in bed with" to compare it to the Qatar World Cup is flimsy. You can educate me on that comparison if you want.

I feel sick. France are the better team but England put in a good performance and have nothing to be ashamed of.

Just need better strikers. Kane is good but sits in midfield. Got saka and foden as playmakers for Maguire in the box...

Oh no doubt, he was bad for you guys tonight. Missed that foul on Saka and also think you should’ve had an earlier penalty as the tackle was hovering on the line.

No worries on agreeing to disagree, there's plenty of room for judging these things not exactly the same as one another.

That said, a man has been accused - and let's be honest, we have a good idea that it's certainly more than an 'alleged' issue - of sexually assaulting over 20 women and was rewarded with a slap on the wrist and $230M guaranteed. I'm not at all getting genuine care there, but sure let's agree to disagree.

And the NBA's business ties with China are massive. Only a little less massive than China's human rights violations for years and years and years now. I think no question debatably more so than that of Qatar. Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, etc. It's an enormous list of atrocities that I've barely typed a few out.

We can absolutely agree on fuck Qatar and fuck FIFA, and you obviously don't have to give the first fuck about the world cup, no worries there either, but I don't see a ton of support for fuck some things that are much closer to home that are just as morally reprehensible that we simply prefer to just enjoy.

See that little etc on the end, that indicates I'm just saying it because you laugh at as, I.e. it's same old banter.

Thing is this, From say 2006 to 2018, when we exited tournaments it was mostly in shame having been appalling, but since then I have been nothing but proud.

That line was so stupid. Matterface is horrible on commentary.

England have nothing to be ashamed of. There wasn’t much between the teams and they didn’t lose their heads when France got the first goal. The referee was dreadful. Southgate has done a lot to turn England around - they can now feel confident of going far in tournaments without it sounding arrogant. He’s still too slow at making substitutions, but he has a young group who will get even better over time. Bellingham and Saka in particular will shine in future tournaments.

I hope Messi can sign off his international career by winning the big one.

It’s more the media and commentators falling flat on their faces going on about 66 I laugh at in these situations. Still though…

It was coming home and must’ve reached home by now. Hope it had a safe flight.

Elliott-Rice-Bellingham should be a formidable midfield three in time. Foden, Rashford and Saka should get better. The worry is centre back - Chilwell and Sessegnon should kick on at left back, right back has so many options. Tomori, Guehi, Gomez and White could come with international experience though. Kane fading is something to look out for too, but if Rashford plays through the middle for United going forward that would hopefully cover that.

Pretty unfortunate that exit. Thought we were the better team 2nd half.

I think if we can improve at centre half and have more depth upfront we can win the Euros. We weren't far off from beating the world champions.

Meh, I think this is the strongest team/squad we have had probably for 20 years. We just need to convert the opportunities we have, which we didn't do against France.

Messi is going to break the record for most appearances in a World Cup this week. Didn't realize he was close to the mark.

Unfortunate set of events for Croatia, but an absolute beauty of a ball sent from deep to split the cbs into space..

edit: and just like Alvarez scores uhh, something, of a goal.. wow.

So who does everyone think going to win? Does France go back to back or does Messi get the trophy that he has yet to win?

I am leaning Argentina. France is damn good but I think Messi and company will win out.

Argentina actually makes me root for the French. They are so annoying. The whine and complain about everything; they are super dirty while also being super soft and diving all the time.

Whilst I see your point, you've seen Argentina play, right?

Not fussed who wins, hope it's a good game.

Total dominance so far by the Argentines. Great second goal.

    What a game. Insane

I still fucking hate PK's deciding a game especially a World Cup but it is what it is.

Lets see who pulls it out.

The damage caused by that stupid tournament is just starting. Thankfully it is over. There are going to be so many injuries the next 3 months.

    There’s always one…

Bet you were just waiting keys poised by the keyboard for hours just to post that.

Argentina were coasting for 70 minutes then Mbappe suddenly turned it around and the drama was outstanding from that point onwards. So delighted for Messi. Wonder if he’ll finally call it a day on the international stage or try for another Copa America.

Wow crazy game. I wanted France but am happy for Messi.

Mbappe didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Imagine being on the losing side in the world cup final and scoring a hattrick.

The rest of the Argies are horrible cheating bastards though.
