    How do you consume music?

Talk to me fellas. Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, Tidal, CDs, Vinyl, Soulseek??? How do you get your music these days and what do you think of the various platforms?

I am someone who has held on very long to storing all of my own music on my laptop. Much of it is downloaded through Soulseek or imported from CDs, while some of it was purchased digitally on iTunes. I'm now making the switch over to streaming because I want to be more in touch with new music and not just listen to the stuff I already know I want to listen to. I'm currently on Amazon Music Unlimited because they're giving me 3 months free. After that, I'm likely bound for Apple Music so I can merge it with my existing iTunes library.

How do you get music into your earballs?

Also feel free to talk about headphones and speakers and media players and whatnot.

The only time I really support anyone digitally is if they're underground artists who don't press cd's. If you press a cd and I like your shit I will buy it. I can't use being almost 40 as an excuse for my lack of desire to ride the digital wave as it's not something foreign to my age group at all. I'm one of the few people I know that cares if a car has a cd player in it lol.

I love Spotify despite it's criminal approach to distributing wealth among the artists. I will load that shit up while playing PS4 and put on a Daily Mix. It's how I tend to find out about new artists.

Spotify, but it sucks for mixtapes so I usually download those.

I'm probably way behind on good mixtapes purely because Spotify is so easy to use.

Spotify + an industrial strength ad blocker.

Occasionally I'll get introduced to a new band by various youtube reactors.

so then are you doing the free version of Spotify plus the ad blocker to stop the ads from coming up between songs?

Yeah, you still get the webpage ads/offers but it works pretty well in most cases. Just occasionally there's a pause between albums or a song won't start on the first click.
The difference between that and my (unprotected) phone is night and day.

Also, from my laptop or phone I can stream to my soundbar/subwoofer and it is SWEET. Trouble is I can't use it when the rest of the family is in.

I use youtube to keep up with new releases, buy CDs to support artists, and used vinyl/cassettes from discogs.

    Most of y'all disgust me.

I use Spotify, but I also very much enjoy purchasing used CDs at Goodwill, garage sales, and other thrift stores. Most of the "new" music that I listen to is just digging deeper into older artists that I never really previously was aware of or heard of besides maybe a few of their hits. Since I started working from home when the pandemic started, I try to make it a habit to listen to an album every day the last hour or hour an a half of my work day.

So are all of you spotify users paying or using the free service? I feel like it’s hard to use free Spotify because you can’t listen to full albums and whatnot.

Family plan that my wife and I pay for and our friends mooch off of.

Duo plan with the wife. Think it's like $15 a month, but considering I use it almost 8 hours a day during work it's worth it. Though I tend to listen to stuff I already have on CD so...

I also get irked when an album I want to listen to isn't on there. Some artists have albums missing, because they were on a different record label.

Also irks me when a song on Spotify will be "Artist - Song Title (Remastered 2009)". I get it's remastered, but I don't know maybe put it on the album notes.

Mostly radio. Occasionally CDs and Youtube.

But I think the music I enjoy the most is when a small jazz group performs live.

With a knife and fork like a civilized human.

Radio and CDs. Got a CD player in the car and at work and I don't own a cellphone plus I like physical things. Sometimes pull up stuff on YouTube if I'm at home. We've got Spotify so when I'm home I occasionally yell at the bookshelf to play something but not nearly as much as the wife does.

That sounds terrible. I was thinking last night how different old movies would be. Home Alone would seemingly end a lot sooner if Kevin called his mom. I say this but there is a new Home Alone so they must have thought of a way around it.

Was Spotify, but switched to Amazon Unlimited because we already had Prime, so it was cheaper than Spotify.

I literally only use it in the kitchen through the Alexa though when I'm cooking or tidying up and on the occasional long car journey.

Used to love listening to music, but can't find the time these days. Still have a CD player and kept maybe half of my CDs after a clear out a couple of years ago.

Don't listen to much of anything modern at all.

I still have all my CDs, they are on shelves in my back room, maybe 3,000 or so. Don't think I'll ever part with them but I haven't bought a CD in a year or two.

It's much easier to look it up on Spotify than find the CD and put it in a CD player.

Watching TV, the final Tony Bennet concert with Lady Gaga was so moving. His mind has turned to mush, but he can still remember every lyric and sing better than anybody ever.

I'm now officially on team Apple Music, and it's pretty great. I'm currently in the process of deleting the majority of my roughly 50 GB of music from my laptop and replacing it with the equivalent songs from the Apple Music library, thus freeing up valuable space on my 128 GB laptop. Of course I first dumped my music library onto an SD card in case I ever need it back in the future. In the end I will still have a small amount of music stored locally (unreleased songs, mixtapes, or songs/alums that for whatever reason aren't available on streaming due to rights issues).

What I love about AM is that I can easily blend my own stored music with the music from the platform, and can fully customize my library by editing every song's info. I'm a big fan of having a meticulously sorted library so the ability to change artist names and album names to make them uniform or to remove unwanted information - for example I don't want Abbey Road to be titled as Abbey Road (2021 Remastered) and be listed as a 2021 album, so I tweaked it back to normal. And for songs where multiple rappers are on one song and they list them all in the "artist" field - forget about it. Gotta edit it so all my Dr. Dre songs appear under Dr. Dre without having a loosie under the artist "Dr. Dre and Eminem".

I'm not sure if you can do the same on Spotify - I think not?

So yea, Apple Music > Spotify, says I.

I hate when it says (Remastered) after song titles or album titles. But I use Spotify, as I hate Apple. I link Spotify to my last.fm account, so I can see play counts of each song and artist. last.fm just recently enabled you to edit songs in bulk, so I can just change a song on there to remove the (Remastered) part.

If you say Apple Music is better than Spotify, I may look into it, but if I can't link Apple Music to my last.fm then I'll probably stick with Spotify.

I don't claim to be an expert on Spotify, but I think Apple Music has a great layout and customization ability as I described above. I could probably get over not being able to edit songs, but adding those unreleased songs into my library is key - especially because I listen to hip hop so there are a lot of mixtapes and unreleased songs that I want to have in my library. Diss tracks and whatnot that will never be officially released.

My experience with Spotify is limited to a few months of free trials I've done over the years, so I don't factually know that you can't add your own tracks to your library. All I know is that with AM, it's easy peasy. I can tweak my music library in iTunes on my laptop to however I want it and then it changes on my iPhone within moments. It's pretty sweet.

You can add local files to Spotify. There are a couple of Monster Magnet albums missing from Spotify, but I took the MP3s of those albums I have and added them to the local files in Spotify. It's a bit of a confusing process though, wish it was easier.

What sucks about adding local music to Spotify, at least on my phone, is it doesn't let me pick a folder and just pulls everything from my phone, including audiobooks, and the only way to filter is to use the search function at the top of the app. It could definitely be improved upon. I don't think you can edit any song info for songs that are on Spotify though, just rename your own playlists.

I like the Mind Right and Mellow Bars playlists, I wish they updated more though.

btw I do currently use the Spotify app but only because Armchair Expert is exclusive on there. That's one of my go-to podcasts. And occasionally I'll watch/listen to a Joe Rogan pod when he has a notable guest on, like the Tarantino interview from last year which was good.

I guess it's cool if you use Spotify for music then you have all your music and podcasts in one app, whereas I currently use the Apple Music app and the separate Apple Podcasts app, plus the Spotify app for their aforementioned pod exclusives. But whatever, I am fine with pods being in a separate app. I suppose I could ditch the Apple Podcasts app and use Spotify for all my podcast needs, if I wanted 1 fewer app. Again though, I think I prefer Apple's layout.

Freddie Gibbs and Brian Moses were on JRE today. Should be a good one.
