That 1990 TMNT movie is still the best one, partly because of Shredder.

Warps a bunch of kids with arcade games and cigarettes and trains them to be his ninja army.

No, I can't say that I am. The action and storyline are great, but I can't get over the creepiness. Big shock Gary Oldman is the best damn thing in this film. He's the best thing in everything he's in.

That 1990 movies does an amazing job splitting the difference between the comic and the cartoon.

I can't believe most of you! 1990 Shredder is one of the most intimidating villains in film!

Barely cut Ursula. This tune is still one of the best in Disney's history.

The whole movie actually has dam great music.

The Loki series was great, but it probably knocked him down as a villain since he was pretty much a good guy in that. He was a hero. Also he had already basically become a hero in Endgame.

Loki is a tremendous character, though he didn’t quite make my list

Well, you would have had to split your vote between Shredder and SuperShredder. Makes it tough.

I am way too in my head about the word "villain". I can never see Dr. Evil as a "villain" even though he clearly is.

Dr Evil is definitely an iconic villain even if it's from a comedy. I'd even go as far to say in terms of comedy, he might be the most iconic.

I can't really think of another example like this (where's it not a re-boot but 1 character storyline) besides Vito Corleone. So that boosted him up a lot on my list and is why I had him 3rd.

2 more heavy hitters. I’m not sure I agree with Wicked Witch being placed this high. I get that most villain lists by film buffs would have her high on it but is she really that good? I shied away from these classical villains in my list. I’m sure she was a good villain for 1939, but in 2021 I’m not sure how well she holds up. Or do we just include her because it’s obligatory. I personally have no interest in ever watching the 1939 Oz again, but surely others are still into it. Or into showing their kids it perhaps. Food for thought.

Keyser Söze isn’t real. The character you posted is named Roger "Verbal" Kint, who used the fictional name of Söze during the fabrication he was spinning to the detective. Or is he? Hard to say.

Romford voted for Kint but the rest came in as Söze. I saw Suspects once years ago in my teens. Long over due for a rewatch.

When I was around five or so I saw Oz for the first time. My older cousin always portrayed toughness but was scared to death over the Witch and her Flying Monkeys. He left the room when he found out we were watching the movie. Maybe he just thought they were weird.

Counter would be that 80+ years later, the movie still receives new viewers and her integration with pop culture goes far beyond most we've seen up to this point. She's likely scared more kids than almost any on this list, which is one benchmark of villain effectiveness.

if we're worried about holding up over time....we've got her just a few spots above Shredder.

And that ranking didn't even include SuperShredder.

Verbal Kint is not real. That is just an alias. His name is Keyser Soze (or maybe something else). But it is definelty not Verbal.

But even with my specific feelings about "villains", I have a hard time calling Verbal/Keyser the villain of Usual Suspects (one of my top 10 movies I rewatch annually)

The Wicked Witch is extremely iconic and honestly I'm a little shocked she's not in the top 15. In hindsight I would've included her in my top 20.

Biff is another extremely iconic villain. Again, more of a comedic role obviously but that's ok. We all hated him, especially in Part 2.

I don’t care for Bane as a villain, mainly because of his voice. Not exactly an uncommon take. Remind me what was that accent supposed to be?

    Dark.

That's why you don't hear the dialect in others as much. Most casual dark speakers just adopted it.

Bane was born in it, molded by it. He didn't pick up the light language until he was already a man. By then it was blinding, and he could never be a native speaker.

    It's a nuanced character.

Made our way down to 20.

Now it's the best of the best villains.

I will be looking to follow this up with Top Twenty Movie Heros. I think that list might be tougher to put together so start thinking now people!

I was thinking it might be. Some movies have a few protagonists that might spread the points out more than with villains.

I do hope Wayne Szalinski makes a few lists!

As big as a Stephen King fan as I am, I have never seen Misery.

I love Szalinski, but Rick Moranis as a person is even more of a hero, considering what he gave up to become a single parent.

As someone who was raised by a single father, Rick Moranis’ story touches me right in the tingly parts. He’s the man.

I haven’t seen Misery either. I probably should. I’m aware of the plot and based on that clip jarrod posted, I can see why it ranked highly.

Scar is a good villain but didn’t crack my top 20.

I remembered reading about before and just looked it up. His name was Taka, which means “garbage” in Swahili and honestly, I’d kill my fuckin brother too if my parents named him King and me garbage.

Not to mention, there was enough backstory to give her credibility, that is, for us to know that she believed she was doing what was best, how she justified her actions to herself.

I was never a James Caan fan - thought he was the weak link acting wise in the Godfather, and almost skipped seeing this when it came out. But because people kept telling me Kathy Bates was absolutely perfect in this role, I was convinced and am glad I saw it. And James Caan was surprisingly so damn sympathetic, and helpless, you couldn't help but root for him. I watched it again not long ago and it still holds up.

I included Ursula over Scar, because for some reason, I felt Scar came off as a bit cartoonish. I would still rate her higher, but the simple fact that I left him off tells me I should have spent more time on my list.

It was down to Ursula vs. Scar for a spot on mine and went with Scar more to do with Jeremy Irons than anything I think. I thought his delivery was excellent, not that Ursula's wasn't.

I saw Misery once when I was younger and anything Bates is in I still compare her to Wilkes. Waterboy, Office etc. I would just watch waiting for her to break out a sledgehammer.

Kathy Bates would make a great Ursula if they decided to re-do the movie. She just has a great voice. IDK if she can sing, but her voice is great in various roles.

Shout out to Kathy Bates aka Dolores Clairborne aka Mrs Green aka Meg Bethune (Show some fuckin love for Angus) the list goes on.

I was young when I saw Misery. I really don't recall seeing Kathy in anything between Misery and Waterboy so when I recognized her I definitely was playfully thinking poor Bobby is going to get the sledgehammer treatment for lying to her.

Ha no, but when they are delivering the news it's his brother to McClane I was fucking pumped. One and three are the best in the series by far, although two has gained more love from me as I have gotten older.

Speaking of Titanic, doubt a lot of aging wrestling fans were big Titanic aficionados back in the day, but I am surprised Cal Hockley didn't get a nod somewhere from one of us, including me.

Billy Zane made you love to hate him and I think his schtick still holds up to this day. Of course, everyone picks the damn iceberg over him as the top villain of the movie.

I've seen Titanic once all the way through in theaters. I wasn't really enthralled with it like everyone at the time. My mother/sister saw it like 7 times in theaters.

So I missed her in that and didn't even really connect it because I was half heartedly watching. Most of her movies at the time I wouldn't seek out.

Hell, I only saw Misery because I was at my Aunt's house. I wouldn't have seen that otherwise for my age because my mother was pretty protective of what I saw.

Kathy Bates was also pretty scary in About Schmidt. I knew nothing about the movie going in, except that she and Jack were in it. Not sure I could have been prepared to avert my eyes.

I know right? What if had a family or couldn’t produce any little child ice cubes due to the harm caused by that wreckless ship.

    Hope the family sued.

I can't take Zane seriously as a villain, because whenever he talks I just heard Ben Stiller yelling "Put a cork in it Zane!"

Jarrod, prepare for an onslaught of Zoolander quotes in an upcoming mafia game.

I’m okay with my second making overall 17th. I mentioned earlier I’m not the biggest movie buff and did this list in a hurry as a favour to Jarrod and forgot some folk but always associate him with Joker.

Personally if I was ranking Jack’s villain roles it would be 1) Frank Costello 2) The Joker

    ..but neither made my list.

How is that one not Top 10 at least? Very curious what beats it. That movie literally changed peoples actions for the rest of their lives.

Because it led to an increase of the hunting and killing of sharks so fuck Steven Spielberg, fuck Peter Benchley and fuck shark hunters.

The humans, especially the mayor, are the villains in that film. At least Roy Scheider wanted to keep the beaches closed.

I think that was the mother that came back or something. Unless the shark was some T-1000 shit and all it's blown up pieces morphed back together. Come on James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, team up to make Terminator Shark.

Well he is iconic, so he made my list. However, there's not much to him as a character, so he wasn't particularly high.

Jack's Joker=incredible. Jaws, never cared for the movie but iconic. Michael is on another level.

So leave Jordan off the top 20 because he's too easy to vote for?

I went by popularity, how evil their acts were, and how much you loved to hate them. I thought the Nazi from Schindler's List would have been ranked higher because he's one of the most detestable guys I've ever seen in a film.

Slashers are good because most fit my criteria. None of these bad guys have to be nominated for an Oscar for me to consider them. I never took a person off my list because they were too easy or too obvious to remove. The only people I didn't consider were from movies I didn't actually watch. How can I rate people I haven't seen?

Never been a fan of any of the traditional "horror villains": Freddy, Jason, Frankenstein, Werwolves, Vampires. They all seem silly to me.

Sociopathic killers (The Purge, The Strangers, etc) are much scarier to me than supernatural ones.
