    Icon1 Rajah's Top 25 Films of the 2000s

    Hello Everyone.

I was thinking it would be fun to do another ranking/list. This time we will be ranking the Top 25 Films of the 2000s (2000-2009). We will not sorting them so all movies will be eligible if they were released in the correct years.

You can take some time getting the results together. I will be asking for ballots by SUNDAY AUGUST 8th so I can begin posting results starting Monday, August 9th. (But if you need more time, just let me know you are still working on it and we can delay if a few days).

Anyone is welcome to submit their ballots; the more the merrier. If you can't get to a full Top 25 that is OK, but I will ask for at least a Top 10 in order to "count" the ballot.

I just scanned through about 1,000 movies from those lists you posted (the IMDB one is the easiest to quickly scroll through). Here are the 49 I've added to my list of possibilities so far:

Just a bump and a reminder. I won't start counting until Sunday so people still have time. Just give me a shout here if you are still working on it and need more time.

I’m still working on it, i.e. I haven’t done shit after jotting down my aforementioned 49 possibilities. Don’t start without me but I’m sure I’ll get it to you this weekend.

Let's go ahead and say I will post the first result tomorrow morning at about 9 am ET. But I will check to see if anything new has been submitted before.

So that is the new, semi-hard deadline: Tuesday Aug 10th 9 am ET. Any further extensions can only be a matter of hours if you are just putting together the final pieces…

Definitely more of a challenge than I'd initially considered. Also definitely looking forward to the results here, may well be all over the place.

    Just a tease:

Lots of different choices for everyone…. Very few movies are on even half the ballots…. Not as many comedies as I was expecting… You guys like well made movies by talented directors… Not super surprised with the top of the list but I think people are going to be kicking themselves when they think about movies they didn't list or forgot…

I should have the first selection posted in the few hours.

I did use that IMBD list you provided and another site, I think I looked at a total of 200+ movies if not more that came in in that 10 year period. I was just noting every movie I saw and liked. My "list" was cut down from 57 to 25 and the 22 I cut were movies that I bet will find their way on several lists.

There was one movie I put on my top 25 that I only put because I needed more happiness and joy lol. I was like "What # would my kids put this movie if they made this list?"

I'd send a list but I can guarantee you none of my top 25 movies would appear in a voting based top 25 movie list, you know unless other people are big fans of Freddy Got Fingered and Strange Wilderness.

Based on my experience running these things, it’s beneficial to wait for the stragglers because the more lists the better. And not just for inclusion's sake but for statistical relevance. For my 1990s countdown I got 15 voters to participate and I was trying to get as many as possible because as I bet you're seeing, those last few movies that make your countdown might be on there due to only 2 voters. I always wanted at least 3 or 4 votes for something that made my countdown, or else it could be more obscure than I'd like. There have been times when I even bumped up the score of entries that were on more lists. E.g. I award 1 to 25 points as normal but then in my spreadsheet I have a column with the # of lists and I add that # to the final total before sorting them. This is the same as awarding 2 points to 26 points instead of 1 to 25.

Anyway that's just my 2 cents. Looking forward to the results regardless.

I should give Strange Wilderness another go because I adore Grandma's Boy and it's the same type of Sandler-free Happy Madison production from the same era. I think I saw it on Amazon Prime lately. I probably saw it 10 years ago and don't remember having the same fondness as I do for the classic Grandma's Boy.

BTW Grandma's Boy didn't make my list which pained me. It's too tough with all the dramas to include a ton of silly comedies in there too.

And I'll need to give Grandma's Boy a re-watch because I recalling not enjoying it but I could be getting it mixed up with something else.

Damn there's a movie that I fucking skipped that would have been on my top 25.

As soon as Kevin Nash shows up as Rob Schneider's muscle in the beginning I knew Grandma's Boy was going to be good.

    Also liked Strange Wilderness.

I used my DVDs to make my list (yes I still have DVDs) and I thought it was solid. Then I started to see the votes and saw how many movies I didn't include.

My list is much more "Movies I enjoy the most" rather "the best movies of the decade" so I am missing some obvious dramatic choices and mine is much heavier with comedies.

I will go ahead and start posing results but if anyone still wants to participate, let me know and we can come up with a plan.

The bottom of the list has many, many ties so I will burn through those faster.

These are all movies that received votes for Top 5 that did not make the rest of the list

Fog of War, Paranormal Activity, The Queen, Mean Girls, Borat(!), Cloverfield, The Descent, No Country For Old Men(!), The Wrestler, The Dark Knight Rises(!), Lost In Translation, The Ring, Spider-Man 1

EDIT: There are even more but those ones are close so I didn't want to spoil everything…

These movies received more than one vote that did not make the rest of the list

Catch Me If You Can, Gone Baby Gone, V For Vendetta, 300, Superbad, The Hangover, Unbreakable, Revenge Of The Sith, Collateral, 28 Days Later, Sin City, The Bourne Supremacy

As Fro explained above, I am going to use raw totals to sort the list but I will be using total votes as the tiebreaker (ie. 39 points from 4 votes is better than 39 points from 3 ballots). I think it is better to reward the ones multiple people picked.

If anyone still wants to try to submit, let me know and we can come up with a plan still. I will even accept votes for those movies that I listed if there are any giant fans that want to "save" their favorite film from the relegation lists.

HAHA. I didn't even notice that. Everyone seemed to be so good with the years that I kind of stopped looking unless it was making the final list.

I am going to make a test post with my number #1 choice that didn't make the list. Just to check the formatting. If anyone sees anything wrong, just let me know.

I am up to 11 so far so I am willing to accept more if they want. To make the final cut, you needed at least 3 votes. 6 movies are named on more than half so far so that is the top of the list

If you have any appreciation for 1970s Rock and Roll, it is a must watch. If you don't love that music/era, it is just a really good movie with great performances by multiple Oscar winners but I can see not liking the music aspect.

Almost Famous is the epitome of movie that I've heard about very positively left and right yet have never carved out the chance to sit and catch up to it.

Thought it had a great shot at making the actual list.

I saw Almost Famous once back when it was released. The thing about movies are when I was younger I had the time to watch them over and over. Once I get into the 2000s I was busier and busier and some movies either got watched once and slipped through the cracks completely.

There are at least 10-15 movies that people picked that fall into that category for me. Heard wonderful things, they are on my list to watch because I think I would like them but never got around to watching it so I couldn't rank them

Yeah I have a pretty solid DVD selection from that era but I wouldn't call some of the top 25 lol. And like you I realized I didn't own several top movies that I put on my list.

Because it's an alright movie. If you're not into that era, that music, it doesn't really do anything for you. I've seen it once due to Jason Lee and being told Kate Hudson shows her "tits". It's a good movie don't get me wrong but it wouldn't even be on my personal top 100 of that era but I could see why some would include it.

I thought Almost Famous was Almost worthy of this list, as it was watchable ... once. I decided that if I never bothered to go back and re-watch it, even though I have the DVD, then it doesn't belong.

The Ring made my list at #23. It's one of my favorite horror movies of all time. While I don't find myself going back to it nowadays, the experience of seeing it in the cinema was very memorable and it scared the shit out of me.

No Country For Old Men was on my short list but didn't make my top 25. It's good but ehh there's not much heart in it. Who's the protagonist? Not that I hate the unusual structure but it doesn't lend itself to a place in my heart or in my top 25 movies of decade.

The Wrestler wasn't on my list but I'd like to watch it again because I don't think I've seen it since around the year it came out. Very sad from what I recall.

    Borat, meh.

    Spider Man, meh.

    Paranormal Activity was good.

I don't think I ever saw Lost In Translation. Should I?

Some good ones here. The Hangover and Superbad not being in the countdown is why I wanted to split out comedies when I ran this for the 90s. There were a looooot of major, big-ticket, high quality comedies in the aughts and looking back on them, it's sad that we're now in an era where these movies are mostly bygone.

The Hangover was IT, I mean this was a phenomenon type movie. I had it 14th on my list. The sequels stunk but the original holds up as an all time comedy. I already loved Todd Phillips from Road Trip and Old School, I think he's a comedic wiz and this movie was huge and exciting and it had breakout performances for both Zach an Bradley. Aggressively fun movie worthy of how well it did commercially.

Superbad was great too and I had it 24th. I watched it recently and while I don't put it in the esteem of The Hangover or certain other top comedies which I hope are forthcoming on the countdown, it's a damn good high school coming of age comedy with that classic Rogen/Apatow style. Christopher Mintz-Plasse steals the show. That kid was funny as fuck as McLovin. I also love Knocked Up and Pineapple Express, but Superbad was the only one of these that made my list.

Catch Me If You Can and Sin City were both in my top 50 but not my top 25.

I never been into the Nolan Batman movies so I was shocked it only got one vote. Considering how well the other two did, I thought it would have more votes.

But then kdestiny pointed out that it was actually made in the 2010s so it makes sense

I thought Borat and No Country had a better reputation. Not surprised at missing; just thought they would be better represented. Sasha Baron Cohen and the Coens have people who love everything they do.

Hangover and Superbad were two of the one I was talking about when I said there were not many comedies. Those were HUGE hits that just kind of disappeared.

Good movie, athough the soundtrack stuck with me more than the film itself. I can't really explain why I don't hold it in higher regard given that the soundtrack is all time and the cast is stellar. For some reason this movie is nostalgic for me in a painful way. Maybe there's too much free spirit and flower power in it for my uptight northeast hip-hop loving psyche. Hippies make me uncomfortable.

I didn't have There Will Be Blood first overall, but I was the second voter who had it on my list. I had it 12th. I just watched it because it recently came onto American Netflix. So good. Shout out to whoever had it 1st.

I guess I should have tried to make a list. It just sounded too tough with such a wide criteria. Almost Famous would have for sure been on it. I keep meaning to watch There Will Be Blood, I've never seen it.

Never heard of There Will Be Blood but am intrigued with the title paired with the gif. Guy looks like he could fuck some shit up.

If you want to still give a try, you are welcome to. I will go back and make the changes. We are not that far down the road yet.

It is a great movie but not one that I ever felt the need to rewatch. I probably should. It has been a decade since I watched it. But I do remember liking 'No Country…' more that year.

I bet I liked No Country more than There Will Be Blood at the time. But now I’ve flipped them.

It’s Daniel Day Lewis as an early 20th century oil man trying to drill during the California oil rush. Based on the novel called Oil! Incredible performance, maybe my favorite of his. He’s not a good man, quite the contrary. He’s got a competition in him that some argue is an allegory for American greed. Recommended. On Netflix now.

I don't think I ever saw Lost In Translation. Should I?
No Country is just filmmaking made so sound and so well performed and so on the edge of it's each next step.. honestly never occurred to me the need for a hero so much as just enjoying the anxious peering into the imminence of the setting and scenario in all it's frame by frame quality.

I recommend Lost in Translation. It's Bill Murray being awesome/cool Bill Murray schmoozing in a very happenstance kind of way with a very demure Scarlett Johanssen while both being completely out of their element in Japan and within the frameworks of their own individual personal circumstances. I think it's pretty rad.

So I received a few late changes that altered the list so a couple of movies that just missed might have snuck back on…We will have to wait and see which ones

But that did bump the movies that were tied for 25th off the list so I thought they deserved their spot still.

I was just talking about that Little Miss Sunshine movie. We were talking about Steve Carrell doing serious roles and we couldn't remember the little girl who was in it. I was like, it's the Zombieland girl lol. True story, this was the first time I ever watched a pirated movie. Years and years ago I worked with a guy and he had all these pirated movies and this one was simply a mug at the theatre. It was terrible and I threw it in the trash thinking, wow, this is what people are willing to go prison for??

Ocean's 11. I saw this one time. Steven Soderbergh, great director. Produced one of my personal all time favorites A Scanner Darkly. Funny story, and I didn't notice this until yesterday when we were talking about Grandma's Boy but I had this on my list and meant to include it but must have accidentally deleted it from my original list that had over 50 movies. I went back and was like, what the fuck did I do?? I rushed my list thinking the deadline was legit lol.

I had Ocean's Eleven 8th on my list which is pretty damn high. Perfect heist movie. It's light, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and it has a great all-star ensemble cast all of whom don't try to steal the show. It's a highly rewatchable movie. The third one is good too.

Little Miss Sunshine just missed out for me. Think it was 28-29.

Me and you were the only ones. I catch rewatch that one all the time. I even like the sequels. Great chemistry with the cast.

I love Casino Royale which is why it’s in my top ten. The franchise was forced to up its game after the Bourne films and the big action scenes feel really visceral as a result. It’s a great origin story that still has all the elements you’d expect from a Bond film. David Arnold and Nicholas Dodd’s score is also one of my favourites.

Casino Royale was not on my list and as soon as I saw it on other lists I regretted it. I've always like Bond movies and it is one of the best. 20/20 hindsight: it would be around 10-15 I think

Never saw Casino Royale. I've yet to be sold on Daniel Craig. I looked up his filmography and feel bad that I've only seen like 3 of his movies, one being "Kid In King Arthur's Court" lol. The others being Knives Out and Tomb Raider, and I don't even remember him in Tomb Raider but that movie was whack. Sorry if anyone voted for it lol.

i had it at 18, mostly cause i missed out on it at the time, and a lot of my list was ranked thanks to memories of the time, as the 2000's were a huge time for me and consuming films.

    What an underrated gem.

    Charming, hilarious, heartwarming, heartbreaking, poignant..

an amazing ensemble cast all pulling their weight to tell the story of this family constantly on the brink of imploding while on their all-out irreverent mission.

And that finale, that effin finale.

I tried to watch Little Miss Sunshine with my wife back when we first started dating and fell asleep. I'm not sure if I thought it was boring or if I was just really tired, I just remember falling asleep.

I've never seen a single Bond movie.

I'm with you on the Bond flicks Bert. Only part of one I've seen was Goldeneye. I was watching but remember thinking Bond was the slimeball from Mrs. Doubtfire and not being totally enthralled.
