A slight surprise. Thought it would crack the Top 5.

The Departed was my 4th, only behind the 3 LOTR movies. Here's my take on this flick:

When it came out, it was great but it felt a little overrated since it won Best Director and Best Picture but it wasn't as good as Goodfellas or maybe even Casino so it felt like a makuep for Scorsese. And there's some truth to that but what I love is this movie didn't try to be a Boston version of Goodfellas/Casino/Irishman. It had a unique feel to it, being a modern mafia tale, not Italian mobsters in suits eating pasta. The characters are different and Marty styled and shot it much differently, and it feels unlike anything else in his filmography. And I think it's aged wonderfully - I watched it within the last 6 months and it's a gem and it 100% deserved Best Picture and would have been a big miss to give to any of the other nominees.

What I love about it most beyond the obvious crisp directing, tremendous cast and the fun dual-rat story taken from Infernal Affairs, is the script. I think I give William Monahan the MVP on this flick because there's something about the script and maybe the editing that hits so well. I can see how it might not be for everyone but this movie has very short scenes that move along from one to the next at breakneck speed, and the dialogue in them is tremendous. There's so many short little quips and exchanges that are so witty and profound and perfect, and often very funny. I adore the script/dialogue and that's what separates this from just a really good organized crime thriller IMO.

Very good movie. I didn't have it listed but it must've been pretty high on people's list. It definitely doesn't feel as old as it is. Love the last 15 minutes or so.

had the departed just outside my top ten, at number eleven. great, great movie. i probably find it more watchable than a lot of scorsese's other flicks, and i think that has to do with nicholson's performance, and to a lesser extent mark wahlberg's. wahlberg brought some comedic relief, and nicholson was so fucking magnetic. a lot of what fro mentioned is on point, about it being a fresh, modern take on a mob film, and especially for a scorsese mob movie. watching the story click into place is fun, with a great twist that caught me very off-guard in the theater.

how nicholson wasnt at least nominated for a best supporting actor oscar baffles me, especially seeing wahlberg got one. frank costello is one of my favorite nicholson roles.

I missed this movie when it first came out. Heard about the ending and just watched that on YouTube. Kept seeing in HBO and finally watched the whole thing and was blown away even knowing(?) the ending. Only then did I find out it was Christopher Nolan film. It is weird how I watched it completely backwards basically.

    For the Top 25 movies

On the high end, the ballot with the most movies had 15 out of the 25 movies (it was actually two). Another had 14.

On the low end, the ballot with the fewest movies had 5 out of the 25 movies. Another two had 6.

You can probably guess with side you are on

If nothing else the math nerd in me is thrilled with the Bell curve. Shows unreal natural distribution

    5; 6; 6; 8; 8; 9; 10; 11; 11; 14; 15; 15. Average 9.8

I've gotta be right around that 5 mark holy fuck lol

But if you look at how many movies were released during that decade, narrowing down 25 is damn near impossible-but extremely fun.

    Love The Prestige.

Following Memento, Insomnia, and Batman Begins.. and knowing TDK was around the corner, this film was the one that had me completely dialed into Chris Nolan.

I mean, David fucking Bowie as Nikola effin Tesla. Yes.

Prestige was 4th on my list. I rewatched it again recently and it’s incredible how it sucks you in right away. One of those films where I actively reflect on how good the story-telling is as I watch. It flows beautifully with twist upon twist. One of my favourite Michael Caine performances too, with the dual role of teacher/father figure and narrator.

I haven't had time to check in to this thread since I submitted my list.

So if I hadn't rated The Incredibles so high, sounds like it might not have made the list? And Up didn't make the cut? Shame on y'all.

I left Taken off my list because the sequels damaged the franchise. On its own, I recall it was terrific on first viewing. After seeing the others, it makes it so I don't want to rewatch the first one ever again.

Little Miss Sunshine was splendid - a movie I had no idea what to expect going in, and I loved every moment of it.

I now have a pretty good idea as to the others on my list that won't make the cut.

The Incredibles and Up are great but not great enough to crack my top 25 films of the decade. Nemo was the only Pixar film on my list.

I should put Up on my re-watch list, because it's probably been 10 years since I saw it.

Then after about the first sentence or two I just took the paper over because I adored the film and it became this deep dive into the Joel/Clementine dynamic that I was having fun with. It was basic fun descriptive analysis type shit.

I don't remember any specific grade, just that it did well. I got geeky af about that movie for a minute cause, ya know, it's dope.

Giant gap between 6th and 5th. 6th place was closer to 15th than it was to 5th.

The Top 5 are pretty predictable but probably not the top 5 favorites. Can anyone guess all five and the correct order?

    First one will be free…

I don't know what the final four will be, let alone what ranking they'll be in. Fellowship of the Ring and The Dark Knight are assured. The other 2? I'll guess Step Brothers and Training Day, but I wouldn't have thought either of those would rank so highly. I certainly don't think it's Avatar.

i feel like there are still a handful that could find their way into the top four. dark knight seems a lock. american psycho, anchorman and 40 year old virgin i dont think i saw on any of the 'did not make it' lists. children of men is an amazing movie that i imagine might have ranked highly enough for a handful of people to push it high. if _me chose to count a vote for either kill bill volume as a vote for kill bill as a whole, that could have picked up enough votes. momento and wedding crashers are dark horses. training day seems like a good shout, but i also dont know that the base of people who voted in this would rank it all that high. i know it didnt even make my list.

the prestige was at number twelve for me. another film that just catches you off guard with how clever it is. great performances from the whole cast. outside the batman films, this is my favorite nolan movie. it came out at a time in his career where he seemed to have the trust and confidence of production studios, but also hadn't fully jumped with both feet into huge blockbuster films like what would come next with the dark knight. each film after TDK has felt like him reaching for new heights in filmmaking, especially when it comes to sound design and cinematography. even with the twist, it's his most grounded hollywood film other than insomnia. there's something very cozy about it, which i love.

eternal sunshine rounds out my top five. what a fucking concept, the acting is incredible, and gondry's direction takes it all to another level. the baby joel scene is like the perfect distillation of the film and is one of my favorites.

my highest ranked pure comedy, sitting at number eight. think i saw it three times in theaters, as i gushed to people that they needed to see it and inevitably went with them to the theater. insanely quotable and ridiculous. love it.

I had Anchorman 20th. My comedy rankings went:

    Step Brothers
    The Hangover
    Anchorman
    Wedding Crashers
    Superbad
    Wet Hot American Summer

My top 4 could really go in any order though. Those are 4 amazing comedies.

Anchorman was the #1 Comedy by a mile.

Comedies were very unrepresented in my opinion. Apparently we are just as big of snobs as are Oscar voters.

No Old School. No Dodgeball. No Hangover. No Knocked Up. No Superbad. No Wedding Crashers. No Step Brothers. No Idiocracy. No Super Troopers. No School Of Rock. No Zoolander. No 40 Year Old Virgin. No Jay and Silent Bob. They all got 1 or 2 votes but not anywhere close to making the list.

Anyone of those would be the best comedy of the last 10 years. The last 10 years have been horrible for comedy. I thought there would be more celebration of the last great decade of comedies.

I had 7 comedies on my list (including Nemo) and 18 dramas. I struggled with what to submit but that's where I landed. I prefer dramas (if I had to choose) and I think there are more good ones than there are good comedies. So my uneven list generally reflects my taste and viewing habits, but if I could re-do it I'd go heavier on the comedy. It's crazy that Step Brothers and Hangover didn't make it.

I had a handful of comedy/dramas, but no outright wacky-type pure comedies. Nothing really against them, just not my bag when rating versus the very best dramas.

A bunch of comedies mentioned above were cut off my list. I tried to keep it even and pluck a few comedies, dramas I enjoyed from a bigger list to make my 25.

I don't know if I 100% believe it, but I think there is a case that making an "all-time comedy" is harder than making a "all-time drama". Comedy is so subjective; making something makes everyone laugh is very difficult. Making people cry is pretty easy actually.

I agree, drama is generally more universal than humor. It's easier for a drama to pluck at the heartstrings of the masses and for dramatic movies to stand the test of time. Humor is more culture-specific or era-specific in its appeal. Not to say there aren't timeless comedies, because there are, but they far fewer than dramas. So I agree with you that it's harder to make an "all time comedy".

This is why when I did my 90s list, I wanted to separate comedies into their own list.

    My comedies were:

    Mean Girls (a classic)
    Monster's Inc
    13 Going On 30
    Saved
    Best In Show

    I guess I prefer dramas.

Btw I should have known anchorman would make it into the top 4. I guessed step brothers. Feels like anchorman was a smash success out of the gate and instantly became a sensation, while step brothers grew its adoration over time, in large part due to playing on cable television.

They’re both great. Anchorman probably suffers a bit from over-exposure for me personally, meaning I burnt myself out on it. I think I stand by putting step brothers ahead of it but I should have put anchorman higher than 20th.

Anchorman was cut from my original list of 50+ but looking back I could've replaced 2-3 movies with this one. I didn't like Anchorman the first time I watched it. The 2nd time I watched it was with my close friend and for some reason it was better that time. I think it's glorious. I don't think it's better than Step Bros or Superbad, the only 2 real comedies on my list, but it definitely deserves a spot on this list.

In 2004 I very much liked the cast of Anchorman, but today I can't stand Ferrell, Rudd, or Carrell.

Ferrel can be very annoying but I don't understand the other two.

Do you hate Paul Rudd because he hasn't aged in like 20 years?

How can you hate Michael Scott?

Anchorman might be the only thing I liked Paul Rudd in. Steve Carell, I absolutely hated Michael Scott but that character has grown on me in recent times, but his comedy movie characters just aren't for me. I haven't checked out his dramatic work though so I should probably do that.

I cheated and voted vols 1 and 2 as one whole movie, just as QT intended.

And imo it really is his masterwork. An amazing revenge arc from a triumphant female lead, something not at all common at the time. An out of this world score. A slew of secondary and tertiary characters all fitting like a glove with one another that was cast to perfection. Riveting fight scenes, dialog galore, eye-popping scenery and visuals. And a pitch-perfect finale to tie it all up magically.

I had to have worn the DVD out back then.

I had Vol 1 on my list at #9, but Vol 2 didn't make the cut. I wish he would release the whole bloody affair on streaming somewhere. I believe he did release the combined version in some small markets but never widely. Anyway it works fine as a 2-parter, but my preference is the sleek action of Vol 1 over the more dialogue-based Vol 2.

I think the final 2 will be:

    #2 Fellowship
    #1 Dark Knight

There was actually only one vote for Vol 2 and it was the "cheat vote" where he voted for 1 and 2 together. I love them both.

Semi-surprising: Kill Bill actually got more total votes than #1 or #2.

This was my #3. Incredible movie. The soundtrack, the vibe, the fight scenes. I would have this in my top 10 of all time favorite movies not just a top 25 of this decade. Vol 2 was incredible as well.

i think i like pulp fiction more. PF is a lot tighter, i feel. it being the first tarantino film i saw, at such an impressionable time in my teenage years, probably has a lot to do with that, too. but kill bill, as a whole, is right there with it, though i only voted for vol. 1. i did think about cheating the same as you, but being honest with myself, vol. 1 really did have the bigger impact on me, with this forum playing a big part in that. the film got a ton of discussion on here back then, and specifically a good amount of attention in the music forum for it's soundtrack. i remember hack bigging up the soundtrack, and he was one of the big music forum contributors that i always admired the opinion of. like you with the dvd, i wore out that vol. 1 soundtrack on my bus rides to and from school, and as i laid in bed at night.

the film itself is self-indulgent in a way inglorious basterds aimed for, but missed the mark of, for me. this and charlie's angels really set up my crush on lucy liu, that continues to this day. visually, without a doubt, it's my favorite film of his. the use of color is amazing and so many things POP off the screen.

it's been quite awhile since i've watched them. think i'll have to change that soon.

comedy as its own genre seems to have just been subsumed into blockbuster marvel movies with a strong comedic element.

Cool. The Dark Knight is great, although I had it 7th so I think it's a little overrated at #1. The Prestige is the better movie in my view, when it comes to Nolan.

Interesting to see Fellowship as the highest ranked LOTR movie. As I mentioned previously I'm running through the extended edition trilogy now, and I'm currently midway through Two Towers. Fellowship is great and while the extended scenes are not bad at all, I think I prefer the tighter theatrical cut. I didn't feel like the extended scenes added a ton. Conversely, I'm already loving the extended Two Towers and feel like the longer version is the way to go. Amazing trilogy in any event. I'll have to re-visit my trilogy rankings when I knock off the extended Return of the King. At the moment I feel like Two Towers > Fellowship.

The Dark Knight was my #1. Before this movie I never gave a fuck about Heath Ledger and I still wasn't sold on Christian Bale. This movie is why I can accept Robert Pattinson as Batman. Anytime I read someone go "Oh that casting choice is going to suck" I use Heath Ledger in this movie as an example of "Let's wait and see". Michael Keaton was met with the same backlash when he was announced as Batman-which if you think about it, that's par for the course when announcing that role.

I had Fellowship @ #4. I didn't have the other 2 on my list at all. When I was watching the countdown I'm like shit, I think I did enjoy Two Towers more than the others why didn't I vote for that? I honestly thought Fellowship wasn't going to make the top 25 after seeing the other 2 ranked so high. But it's great. Perfectly balanced in every way.

Good job _me, this couldn't have been the simplest list to put together and I think it turned out great and was fun to put together personally. Lots of cool reminiscing.

It was bound to be a little all over the place at minimum, and I think we saw that. And I'm certain that was seen in tallying the votes. Just such a broad range of inputs.

Hoping we get to see the masterlist as I'm curious where a number of my selections landed on the whole.

I want to know if anyone else enjoyed The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou or Michael Clayton or several others for that matter..

141 Movies were submitted total from 12 lists.

Chris and Fro each had 15 of the 25; KDestiny had 14… One the other end, Melly with just 5. Percussion and Nash Diesel had just 6… KDestiny ended up have 10 of the last 12 in his list. Nash, even though he only had 6 total movies, was the only person to have his three of his top 5 end up in the overall top 3.

Does anyone have a good idea on how to post the master list? I have no problem sharing it but it is a lot of numbers to just post blind.

I posted it to my Google drive, but if someone has an easier way, just let me know.

Well idk if this helps but the way I have posted the full list was like….

I would copy the relevant columns and put them on a new tab so it would be:

    Ranking #
    Name of film
    Number of votes
    Total points

And then I would maybe put some columns in between which would just be commas or parentheses as needed for formatting. Then I would grab the whole list and copy it in here

I was mostly concerned about the length. The document is like 4 pages long and 150 lines. Thought it would be a pain to read and find stuff.

That the main thing I thought too. So many great movies only got 1 vote or 2. You can easily make a list of just the 1 or 2 votes movies that would be incredible.

I rewatched it again recently. I think it’s seriously underrated. Bale has a quiet power to his performance and Crowe is absolutely captivating. One of my favourite movie villains.

my fucking man. i honestly thought i was going to be the only one to have the assassination of jesse james on a list. that movie shocked the fuck out of me with how much i loved it. one of my favorite brad pitt roles, he's got such an aura around his portrayal of james, which goes a long way in showing why he was followed, respected and feared all at once. this charming yet isolated dude with this sinister streak bubbling just under the surface. he's my favorite in the film, though obviously casey affleck absolutely nails bob ford. an amazing score by nick cave and warren ellis that adds so much to each scene, and spectacular work by roger deakins, with the train robbery scene being the perfect meeting of the two. that shot of jesse walking down the middle of the track, silhouetted by the bright, front mounted light of the train engine behind him, is one of my favorite visuals in a film, ever.

such an underappreciated movie, and was my number one with a bullet as soon as i saw the thread.

i watched it back in 2008 i think and loved it. it's been too long for me to remember many details, but the impression of it as an all time classic has stayed with me. if i rewatched it to get a list together i'm sure it would rank well.

no one had royal tenenbaums on their list? surprising. it would rank highly on mine. wes anderson is no doubt self-indulgent to the max, but i still rate him very highly as a director.

Man was it is an absolutely beautiful film or what? Even at its most dreary its mesmerizing. And I agree, the train robbery scene was epic. They were staged as super villains in that lighting.

Hard not to laugh at James continuously son'ing Ford and the how opposed Pitt and Affleck pulled those scenes off. Well, until Ford had had enough of course.

Also, Dick Liddel's advice on women. Perfect.

Not my favourite Quentin film, but the Chris Waltz opening scene is just incredible.

Also, Batman Begins/Dark Knight both incredible films. The LOTR ones are great, but so so long.
