My Ongoing Top 100 Matches of All Time

around a week ago i got in the mood to try and make a definitive list of my top 100 greatest matches of all time. i've been watching a bunch of wrestling since and am working on ranking it all. i figured i'd post it here and update the list every ten matches i add to my ongoing list.

obviously it's a work in progress and, say, the current #30 match will absolutely not be the final #30 match. but the current #1 will be the final #1, and i'd be very surprised if anything in the top 5 fell out of the top 10.

i'm not going by memory but rewatching everything to rank it, this is just in its early stages. i'm not sure which okada/omega matches might make it. the tokyo dome match and the title change match wouldn't have a shot. the g1 match would have a shot going by memory. i definitely do want to rewatch the hour draw.

oh or if you just mean any matches by those two. okada/shibata will very likely be in my final 100. maybe omega/ishii from the g1.

Shocked by there being only 1 Lawler match.

Oh shit, didn’t see that you had TWO Dundee matches. I’ve been on such a Lawler deep dive the last year, he’s prob in my top 10 workers now. I know you’re a big Lawler guy too, so when I saw only 1, I was like “what the fuck, Tainted?”

I’m also glad that you recognize Morishima vs Danielson as being one of the best matches ever. I know people feel some type of way about Morishima, but that match is fucking amazing. Better than any of the Dragon/Nigel matches for me.

Why do you rate Brock Lesnar vs Rey Mysterio in 2003 so high?

Are these ROH matches online? I’d be very curious to watch them, as well as to try to watch some of this Japan work I see.

    53. Lou Thesz vs. Ruffy Silverstein (Chicago – 4/17/1950) – ***¼

    56. Lord James Blears vs. Leo Garibaldi (LA - 1950s) – ***

Don't worry about the star ratings much. I just use them to put different matches alongside each other on similar tiers. Anyway I watched quite a bit but then lockdown ended and I haven't had time to watch anything since so it'll probably take a few years but lots of them I've seen so might not bother watching again and just rank them anyway. It was fun to watch such a variety of matches from different eras and a combination of stuff I've never seen and others I've not seen for a while.

    Here's everything else nominated:

    Good stuff, TE.

Would love to see some Chris Hero and Vader on the list, but I understand if they get rated mainly for individual performances rather than alltime classic matches.

I need to see Magnum/Blanchard again. Last time I watched, it seemed too muddled in its own gore, but I can remember it being all time great for its drama alone.

    I love that Misawa/Taue match.

I'm also glad to see some Jumbo love on your list. When I was going through the infamous AJPW 5-star list in chronological order, he became one of my favorites immediately.

I just noticed you included McGuinness/Aries. That was an awesome match and one that could get lost in the shuffle with McGuinness's other title defenses (not to mention the title chase). He's got a uinque spot in wrestling history for the way he burned so bright for such a short time. Austin Aries is another favorite of mine and I'm surprised to see he's got 2 matches in the top 25 so far. I never really thought of him like that

the best of ROH was really, really, really good. the current indie scene (including AEW though i know it's not indie) can't produce anything on the level of the best ROH stuff.

I kinda blame ROH for not getting these guys on the same card these days. They never brought in Thatcher. They just recently brought in Chris Dickinson who was ROH level like 10 years ago.

AEW have given Azrieal and Adam Priest a chance to work, so I have hope for them.

A few years ago, Chris Hero had an awesome tour with his newfound fatness and Oney Lorcan and Drew Gulak could work any random indy and have a MOTYC, but now the indies seem to be spread kinda thin. Imean, Eddie Kingston is still the guy who showed up in AIW and worked a high level match with a much deserving Dominic Garrini this year. And Eddie shouldn't have to be the one doing that in 2021.
I wish Will Ospreay would work USA, but he must he happy with his luck in Japan.

We'll see where this goes, of course, with Hero, Joe, and Danielson being out for now (Bryan is free, right?). There was a time when Hero vs Danielson was THE dream match and then Joe snuck up as one of the best in the world, so we all know they they could change everything.

What the hell happened to Nigel? Will he ever return to the squared circle?

i cant think of one better. even if you ignore meaningless comebacks, like flair and michaels, their big FINAL MATCH doesnt come close. the sheer passion for pro wrestling and desire to win the title that oozes out of shibata in that match is something I've never seen before.

I can’t think of any competition for the title. Speaking to Morrison’s point, one thing that struck me as actually a flaw rewatching it was how much okada was outclassed all match long and it never really felt like he did anything to deserve the win, didn’t feel like he earned it. The match was all shibata

Had shibata won, it would have made absolute sense. He went in there and had Okada’s number every step of the way. By the story of the match, Okada won because he took Shibata the distance, which Shibata never really went. Okada is the 60-minute man, but Shibata had never had a match go longer than 25, I believe.

fuck that match is so, so good.

okada needed to show more fire. it felt like all match shibata was like "come on man, lay your shit in" but okada just couldn't summon it. some of the shotgun dropkicks at the end were good though.

updated. added about 20 matches, new ones in bold. i think the top 20 is getting pretty close to final at least. there's only a couple matches i haven't watched that i think have a decent chance of cracking it. el satanico vs. gran cochisse from the 80s. the 2008 battlarts elimination tag. angel azteca vs. el dandy from 1990. those are maybe the only ones left that i suspect could finish top 20 that aren't on the list yet.

i would recommend the tamura/volk han RINGS matches first. there are a ton of awesome RINGS matches out there that didn't quite make the list and are quite accessible.

here is another awesome, fast paced one that is friendly for someone new to the style, volk han vs. kohsaka from 96: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Uv411B7vG/

off the top of my head the other really highly regarded PWFG matches are

naoki sano vs. wayne shamrock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOW1HiGylO0

yoshiaki fujiawa vs. joe malenko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy-OhQh8G48

yoshiaki fujiawa vs. bart vale, which happend at a PWFG show in, of all places, miami: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGdgsFglJTY

havent watched them in a while though

after watching a couple matches i thought might still be top 20 contenders and them not ranking that highly for me i thought the current top 20 might be final, but i watched the kawada/fuchi vs. nagata/iizuka njpw tag from 2000 and it cracked the top 20. all time classic, must watch: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x19bikw

added 11 new matches. feels like it's getting pretty close to representative of what my actual final top 100 would be.

I think this is the first draft of a list that I'm fine with as a "final" Top 100 of all time. I'll probably add more matches before it's all said and done, but I'm at the point where I can watch, like, ten matches I think are worthy of consideration and they don't bump off any others in the top 100. So this is a like a first draft of a final Top 100
