Worst WrestleMania Matches & Moments Of All Time

This is all personal opinion. It can be match quality, lack of appeal, whatever the reason you felt these matches/moments were not worthy of your time. I'll kick it off:

I won't lie. I thought the parodies that Miz & Maryse did were HILARIOUS. The match itself? I've seen worse and I'm sure we'll talk about them. But you all know what killed it for many of us.....

The fuck? This was almost as bad as the time Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were forced to "kiss" on MTV.

Kevin Nash said wrestling died at the end of Mania 20. I disagree.

Vince v Bret, would have been better if it had been them in the corners of someone with a stipulation involved. Bret couldn't go so you could only do so much and a full match was always gonna be shit.

Have Smith, Kidd and Natalya v three heels at the time and if they win Bret gets five minutes with Vince in the ring at the end (well fives too long really but whatever) and if Vince wins no Hart is allowed in WWE again or something like that.

Hart's win and Bret puts Vince in the Sharpshooter after the match.

God that match sucked. Was it the year before or after Cole vs King because that was also a fucking travesty

Well any match that goes after what should have been the main event. Jericho v HHH and HHH v Orton were both screwed for their placements.

Romans had a few just because he was booked terribly and they tried to force him on the crowd.

The fact they were able to convince Austin to do this is the most amazing aspect to this entire card. Imagine telling the biggest draw of all time in wrestling that we need you to ref this piece of shit......I wonder how many fans were turned off by Michael Cole as the #1 character on WWE programming for a good year.

    Couple of others for consideration:

Brock vs Goldberg at Mania 20 where the entire crowd just shat on it as they knew they were both leaving.

Big Show vs Akebono Mania 21

Santina winning the Divas Battle Royal. I didn't mind the match, I just hated Santina.

Miller Lite pillow fight match might be the worst match in WM history.

I don’t even consider the Miller Lite thing a match, just an awful segment.

No straight up singles match on the entire Wrestlemania 2000 card.

Bret Hart vs. Bob Backlund. Since vs. Vince has already been mentioned. I'm a huge Bret fan too but man those were stinkers.

Missing out on Shawn Michaels vs. Marty Jannetty at Wrestlemania VIII and IX.

Not getting Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair at Wrestlemania VIII.

Lex Luger vs Mr. Perfect at WM IX and Lex Luger vs. Yokozuna at WM X. Lex gets a pass at WM XI because The Blus are awesome and so was The British Bulldog.

Shawn Michaels not beating John Cena for the WWE Title at Wrestlemania XXIII. I was there in person and was pretty drunk in the nose bleeds cheering Shawn like I was ringside.

C.M. Punk not getting to go in as WWE Champion and defend against Rock and John Cena at XXIX.

Damien Mizdow not winning the Andre Battle Royal at WM XXXI.

Hulk Hogan leaving Wrestlemania IX as Champion. Yokozuna should have had the whole year as Champion.

Terri Runnels vs. The Cat in a cat fight was just utter garbage and a slap in the face to absolutely everybody.

It's a triple tie between that match, the Miller Lite girls bs, and the Cole-King match. I honestly think Cole v. King should get the nod as worst match in the history of Mania simply because Jerry Lawler and Stone Cold agreed to do it. The other shit is understandable half-time show fluff, this match was 30 fucking minutes.

The Rock defeating Erick Rowan in 6 seconds was terrible.

Lawler and Cole was not only a terrible waste of time and the wrong guy went over, the build up in the months prior to mania was also a huge turnoff.

Bundy and SD Jones was horrible because as the inaugural PPV, we were hoping to get a good match out of every match on the card. Back in the day, the jobbers got all sorts of TV time and the top tier talent rarely interacted except for addressing one another in promos. The pay-off was always for the local matches at your nearby arena, selling tickets. Only once in a while could you see a title match on TV.

The Lawler/Cole build was great. Cole was on fire. But yes the match was absolutely a Mania low point.

Speaking of 27, Miz/Cena comes to mind. Particularly the finish. Where as the crowd for matches like Orton/HHH were quiet from the start, that felt like a terrible finish in any circumstances. They could've booked that so much better.

Such a shame, too, as the video package for the match was outstanding and the match itself was pretty good before it went sideways.

Nope, and for that matter neither was Cole vs. Lawler.
What was bad about Cole vs Lawler was them ending with a decision reversal. What a lackluster end.

Cole v. Lawler had no business being at Mania. It had no business being 30 minutes. The result was terrible.

I will say this. If it had to be at Mania it should have been 5 minutes, including all the entrances, with Jerry Lawler going over with a couple piledrivers. Michael Cole in general angers me but this period of time was "go away heat". He was literally on every show-even ECW where he would just bury the shit out of people in a way that didn't make sense. Heel, face, and then to not get his comeuppance it felt like I was watching Stephanie McMahon lol.

For me, this was probably the era that I just stopped truly giving a fuck about wrestling in general. I love it don't get me wrong but our relationship is like Al and Peg Bundy, where we're really stretching the word "love" in this scenario lol.

Hornswoggle is definitely in my top 3 of why I stopped going above and beyond to watch WWE. Their desire to make him a thing really soured me on having any enthusiasm and now it's just jaded optimism.

Poor old Swagger was involved too. The guy could've been the face of the company but then they forced him to do shit like this. Sad, sad sad. Now look at him, he's never been able to recover from that stink.

If you put in Hornswoggle now, he'd probably be harmless shit for the 24/7 title which though pointless wouldn't seem so bad but it's the fact they put him in so much high profile stuff (McMahons's son, GM, rolling with DX).

    It's Vince's sense of humour.

Swagger never recovered because his arms were that of spaghetti noodles.

I think the higher up suits, including Triple H, have that same corny sense of humor. That's why you still hear these cornball jokes from Triple H, a bunch of 80's and 90's dad jokes lol.

In Cole's defense, the orange singlet and the Cole mine was excellent. They just needed that on a lesser PPV than Mania.

I think the higher up suits, including Triple H, have that same corny sense of humor. That's why you still hear these cornball jokes from Triple H, a bunch of 80's and 90's dad jokes lol.
    Definitely agree.

I've always hated Michael Cole going back to the 90's. I put up with him on SD because literally until he got drafted to Raw, I was never able to watch it in my area because the local affiliate only showed it randomly on Sunday nights at 1130pm lol. So I only had to hear his ass on the ppvs. But then he took JR's spot and I couldn't let that go.

I think had they maybe did this angle for a month and call it a day at Mania with King winning, I'd be cool with that. It was just the dragged out process.

I loved the Orange Cole wore because he went to Syracuse University and I live near Syracuse. So cheap pop from me there. I thought it was very clever shot at J.R. and all his college talk and wearing the OU stuff when he wrestled.

Cole as a heel was white hot. Lawler should have went in and destroyed Cole and that should have been the end. Dragging it out was a mistake.

That horrific women's battle royal at WM25 I think. They had loads of old stars who we had not seen for a while (back when that was a thing rather than them showing up at every Rumble now) and all it ended up being was a Kid Rock gig and some wrestlers not even being shown on camera as they were thrown out straight away.

I absolutely hate the Iron Man match at WM 12 but I guess I cant put it in as worst ever because it was technically good I suppose.

Corbin retiring Angle has to be up there. And I quite like Corbin. He was probably the worst possible choice for Angle's final opponent though. The match was such an afterthought.

Also, how do people feel about WM36 now? As much as they did a decent job in difficult circumstances, I'm not sure I can see myself sitting down to watch much of that show again (outside of the two cinematic matches) in the same way that I've rewatched even the worst Manias over the years.

Anyway, it's important to remember Lawler vs. Cole was Lawler's first 'Mania, but if it makes you all feel any better Vince McMahon is also on record as having hated the match.

Savage vs Crush at WrestleMania X. They hadnt really flushed out a falls count anywhere match and the finish was very anticlimactic.

Haven't seen it since, but I loved Ripley/Charlotte and would happily go back and watch that again. And maybe Owens/Seth and the cinematic matches, like you said.

It's up there for sure. Just dumb more than anything, like having the Hart Foundation in a squash match in Canada at WM 6.

I actually did go back recently and watch the Wyatt-Cena match when it was announced they were releasing an nWo John Cena figure. It is definitely a weird show and I guess in hindsight it might be considered one of the worst simply based on the circumstances. I'll be honest, this show will get a pass when talking about the worst because for me it's simply the lack of crowd. Maybe 4-5 years from now I'll dig it more when comparing it to other fan-less shows.

It will probably develop some type of cult following

Eh, that's not a real excuse though. The 8-man tag didn't happen, this match did. I'm sure there were plenty of matches that had to be cut down. I mean, Sheamus v. Daniel Bryan for the WHC was 18 seconds of BOOKED action lol.

I would be curious to know how many matches for Mania over the years were cut last second. I can literally only think of two. The 8-man tag and the match with Funkasaurus @ WM 29.

It's kinda of interesting that Bret Hart and Taker have had easily 1 of the top 10 greatest matches in WM history and a lot of fans would say maybe the best WM match ever (Bret/Austin and HBK/Taker) but also own the rights to possibly the worst matches in WM history.

I would remove Taker from that conversation 100%. His worst Mania match, hands down Giant Gonzales. It was still better than a lot of other matches we've talked about in this thread because people accepted that match for what it was. I don't really see anyone talking about Big Show v. Floyd Mayweather or Roddy Piper v. Mr T because they accomplished what they were supposed to be. I don't think anyone cared at the time how shit GG v. Taker was at Mania because a lot of people my age loved it. We were like, holy shit El Gigante in WWF? And he's fucking with the Undertaker-who I personally hated for his lack of selling lol.

It's like going back and watching those matches with Zeus. At the time, I was scared of that dude. I thought he was really trying to snap a neck. Imagine him v. Undertaker at Mania!

I actually meant Taker/Reigns. Taker/GG was what it was, I don't think anyone expected anything from that match and that match has one of my favorite Taker entrances.

Ok that's even more strange because Roman v. Undertaker wasn't even remotely close to being one of the worst matches in Mania history or even Underaker's WM history. Come on man, Roman was worse than Snuka?

In my opinion yes, Snuka's match was short and had no hype to it. Taker/Reigns was the main event, was waaay too long and had some cringe worthy botches. Bossman wasn't bad, it was just boring and not up to the standards of a HIAC match.

I believe Gronk also won a championship if I’m not mistaken at WrestleMania

I get that but I don't think that it was worse than Taker's first 6 Mania's. Definitely not as bad as the 2-1 handicap match. I might even say it was better than Taker v. Kane 2.

Side bar, I wish Taker v. Yoko happened at Mania.

I haven't been through them all, but Hogan v Yoko has to be up there.

Dumb, dumb, dumb booking. No-one came out of it looking good. Hogan looked dickish by capitalising, Yoko a 2 minute champion and Bret forgotten. The worst thing was it overshadowed a really enjoyable Yoko/Bret match.

HHH V Booker 2nd for the way it was booked, then Miz v Cena in 3rd probably. Taker v Gonzalez was awful but fun.

Glad that Booker vs. HHH was brought up. Horrible on all levels

I have a hard time putting anything above the Cole stuff. Cole putting himself over for 3 hours a week was just the worst. There's a reason that they don't do Heel Play by Play guys. Basically a year of very little match focus during commentary.

I don't think I'd really consider the crowd in this discussion.

Wasn't blaming the crowd as such for that being so bad, point there being the whole crowd was spoiled beforehand which made it a no-win situation. If they did that what they actually did staying in the WWE then maybe could have been adequate but because of circumstances, it will not be looked on very fondly.

Also from what I recall, I believe Goldberg tried a bit whereas Brock could not give less of a fuck.

I think the match was fine on its own. I would never let meta factors like that get in the way of my enjoying it.

While maybe not the biggest factor, I think crowd reaction is one criteria. I'd say that the crowd reaction certainly helped/raised the level in matches like Hogan/Rock or Taker/Lesnar.

If elevation via crowd is real, the inverse could be true.

I do see that it might not matter for someone personally. But if WWE makes a decision that affects the presentation due to how the crowd responds, it seems like at least a fair discussion point.

That said, I don't rank Lesnar/Goldberg on the same bottom tier as HHH/Booker.

Yeah who cares how the crowd reacts. Sounds like WWX is pitching for a spot on creative lol.

Judging from his username I guess....chairman? Mind you the length of time it takes for him to respond to posts, not unlike Vince himself!

(Btw WWX when you get around to responding, I am only joking!)

Too late he's already preparing a speech.

How about Jake the Snake v. Andre the Giant @ WM 5?
