You don't want to take a QB at 12 if the top 5 are gone.

According to Kyle Shanahan, none of them may be alive on Sunday anyways.

    Presumptively.
If you want your guy and you believe he's going to be a difference-maker, you pony up and pay the price.

After that, Shanahan went back to #3 pick discussion. He didn't specifically name a preferred QB: "Hopefully, knowing the first two that are going, we can end up getting our favorite one. And I don’t believe that would’ve been available at 12.”

I don’t know what media obligations are, but if I were teams, Draft weeks would be off limits.

    Let them all guess

I’m going to hold out hope about this part of the Shanahan quote, because Mac Jones would have still been there at 12...

Not if someone traded ahead of them.

Even then I could see him going top 10 to someone like Denver if someone doesn't trade to 10 or 11 if he's still there like NE, WFT, or Chicago.

Teddy to the Broncos for a 6th round pick.

Does this make their pick up for sale for those who are interested in a QB?

Maybe but I think this makes it inconclusive. I think it tells me primarily that they weren't comfortable with the idea of trying to climb up so Bridgewater is a consolation prize if no one is there at 9. They potentially have a poor man's version of what Chicago was trying to do with the NVP and Foles.

Another point would be is if Denver says "We're set at QB, because we've got these two guys" then their thought process is poor.

That is fair. They are at least in a spot now to see how the QBs fall before them and make a decision without trading up.

Also, Teddy is on a one year deal now due to a restructure. I think they should still draft a QB at 9

It’s Draft Day. How many trades do we think will happen of 1st round picks today?

Why is it on a Thursday night?

    Happy Draft Day!

They moved the First Round to Thursday a few years ago because they realized they could get a ton of viewers and make some money. I like it, plus it gives rounds 2 and 3 their time to shine on Friday.

It used to be a 2 day thing when they realized the money they could make on it. Saturday and Sunday. (There was also a lot more rounds then).

Then, they saw the dollar signs in making the first round Thursday night, and then spreading the remainder out for 2 more days.

I hate Roger, but can’t deny NFL has figured out a way to make massive money under his reign.

Ah well, I like the draft but I cant see myself staying up all night to watch it especially if the Saints are not picking until much further down the draft.

There are rumors they are looking at moving up. Dunno if they will.

The fantasy football chat we have will be going thru the stuff as it happens. I think you’re technically still in that one.

Will this be a virtual draft like last year, or how big a crowd can they have? We all missed the chance to boo the hell out of Roger last year.

Live, they expect anywhere up to 50,000 people in attendance.

My prediction is the Niners take Lance, Eagles trade up to 9 to take Surtain, Bengals take Chase, Dolphins take Waddle, Lions take Sewell, Pats trade up to 8 with the Panthers to take Fields, and Giants go with Slater and not a receiver everyone is predicting in their mock drafts. Also, Mac Jones gets drafted between 13-15.

Each of the invited players in Cleveland will have their own pod.

If the Pats get either Fields or Mac Jones, I'll be delighted, but I doubt the Patriots are trading up. At this point, I am higher on Jones.

There were rumors eariler that SF offered Jimmy G, #3, and more for Rodgers. Maybe this comes to fruition?

As a Niners fan, as much as I love AR12, I would be nauseous if we way overpaid for 2-3 years of the future HOFer.

Take Trey Lance at 3, hopefully we’re set for the next 10-12 years.

Can't blame Rodgers for wanting out. He has to be looking around the league and seeing what's been happening with Brady and Mahomes, added to the fact that the Packers have done nothing for him except disrespect him, trade up to draft his replacement last year, give him no weapons to work with, and fail to restructure his contract to save cap money. They told him they are ready to move on, he's doing the same.

The whole moving up to draft a qb thing was so dumb. You have Rodgers NOW. You have a window to win a sb NOW. Yeah you managed to get a Rodgers ready to replace your Favre. You aren't getting a Favre to replace your Rodgers. Nobody is that lucky. Win when you can. Stop endlessly preparing for the future. There will always be a next season.

Yeah the difference is that Rodgers fell to Green Bay at 24. If Love had fallen to them I don't think there would be an issue.

As a Packers fan, this sucks but i completely understand Rodgers point of view. We've dicked around too much during his entire career not ever giving him the help he needed. Rodgers has only had a top 5 D once and that was the year we won the Superbowl. Brady has had a top 5 D everytime he won the SB! Trading up to draft his replacement was the final nail in the coffin.

That move for Love essentially was the straw that broke the camel's back. Their first three picks from the last draft were essentially useless in terms of helping a team that made it to the NFC Title game the year before. There was that and they hardly pull their weight in terms of giving him support (especially compared to other teams) in terms of skill weapons.

He's strong enough in the league to pull a power play.

Hard to find many better matches than San Francisco.
Smart coach/scheme, decent defense (when healthy), weapons that are built to exploit defenses after the catch.

I'm sure there's a handful of teams that could be a fit but they feel like the best one.

Idk. Think the Shanahans would be cool with a qb that wants to do what he wants to do and doesn't care about their system? Might win a ring though. Could be awesome.

Smart move by the Eagles. Get Smith before somene else does. Good move by Dallas as well. Their guy will be there when they pick.

I'd rather have Mac Jones more than Cam Newton, so it feels like it's a matter of time before Jones takes that job away.

I’m glad the Patriots got a guy without trading up. No idea if he’ll be good or if we’ll regret not moving up for Justin Fields but I leave those decisions to smarter men than I.

I was scratching my head when the Vikings traded with the Jets. Really wanted them to get a second rounder if they were to trade back. Darrisaw looks like a beast and should start immediately at left tackle.

Four 3rds and Four 4ths should have more than enough to trade back in to round two. If only they didn't waste it with the Yannick Ngakoue trade

I am thrilled with the Patriots getting Mac Jones, but I believe Cam will be a lot better than last year, especially now that he will have all the weapons they added in free agency. Mac will need time to learn.

I'm about fucking tired of GM Jon Robinson and Mike Vrabel being so obsessed with being percieved as genius mad scientists. Just fucking win something. Then you'll get bragged on plenty. But oh no we don't need a DC because "what really IS a defensive coordinator when you really think about it?" And why take healthy players who aren't headcases in the first round when you can blow everyone's mind by turning those hard case guys into stars?

If this team doesn't win a superbowl in the next two years then fire them both. I'm tired of them both thinking they deserve Belichick's reputation via osmosis and acting like the media are nuts for ever questioning them.

You ain't won shit. And your decisions are highly suspect. The both of you. Now win or fuck off.

Does Mac sit for a year behind Cam?

As much as I’m not a fan of Jimmy G, I’d be fine with Trey Lance following the Pat Mahomes development route and sitting/watching/getting select game reps his rookie season.

They probably will or until the wheels come off for him.

It's Jimmy's G job for the season until the wheels fall off for him or he inevitably gets hurt.

    Great point with the injuries.

JG will probably be hurt by week 8, Trey getting 8-10 reps a game before taking over mid-season works for me.

Jimmy’s injury history is why I didn’t want me to get traded to the Pats.

Mac Jones will sit either the whole year if Cam doesn’t suck, or he may get in if Can is just awful. I mean, all he has to do is be better than Stidham, and considering Bill wouldn’t start him a single game last year, that doesn’t seem like it’ll be difficult.

As I recakk, when Tom was suspended for his broken cellphone during deflategate, then Jimmy G got hurt, they started Jacoby Brisset and had Edelman listed as emergency/backup QB

They have before, but not often. Last year they had Cam, Stidham and Hoyer on the team all year. Not all three would dress for games, but they’d be there

Is there a rule that if a team uses it's emergency QB in a game they cannot go back to either the starting nor the backup QB?

For comparisons sake: Pats drafted Jimmy g in the late 2nd round after Brady’s age 36 season when he had a down year (87 passer rating). Packers drafted love in the late first round by trading up after AR’s age 36 season when he had a very good year albeit not one of his best (95 passer rating).

Similar situations but the Packers put much more draft capital into their pick and they didn’t have a qb who people were questioning if he’s falling off like people were with Brady at the time (dumb as that was in hindsight)

This gaffe by the Packers front office will potentially go down as historically bad if he never suits up for them again. What idiots.

I also think Belichick made a mistake with not committing to Brady longer but they kept him til age 42. I see that more as a natural running of its course. And of course they never squabbled like this in the media. There were articles written about their friction but they kept it civil. Rodgers is going scorched earth now.

Rodgers is famously stubborn - if he was willing to write off all ties with family members, then there's no question he will write off the Packers brass. Whether or not the reports about him telling potential free agents to avoid Green Bay are true, at this point I'll consider it more of a shock if he starts for Green Bay opening week.

I know the drafting Love is an issue, but if the Packers had told him they may look in to drafting a QB would this be better? Apparently the Bucs and Bears told Brady and Dalton they would be drafting QBs. Andy Dalton hasn't played a down for Chicago, yet they showed him that respect.

I don't think it was just the drafting of Love. The Packers disrespected Rodgers, coming off an MVP season, when they failed to approach him about a possible contract extension that would have easily saved them a lot of cap room, making it easier for them to go get him some help. They reportedly had discussions with every other member on the team. This is not the action of an organization that sees a future with him. So they took a bad situation (last year's mistake) and made it worse.

It also seems to me that it is more likely that the Packers are trying to make Rodgers look like the villain here, by leaking bits of the story, trying to get public opinion against Rodgers. While it is possible that Rodgers has been the source of the leaks in order to try to force a trade, I don't think he was.

And I found the following interesting -
Bart - 16 seasons as Packers QB
Brett - 16 seasons as Packers QB
Aaron - 16 seasons as Packers QB

Really good point there. What people aren't seeing is that Green Bay (at some level, maybe just the GM) want and have wanted to get rid of Rodgers for a while. That's why they tripped over themselves to draft a new qb. That's why they don't want to extend Rodgers and move some of his money back a few years to better the team now.

And yes I agree, that's why these stories are getting leaked out. So that Rodgers will look like an ass before they trade him.

This is all pretty much what they did to Favre when they wanted to transition to Rodgers.

Yeah, but Favre had already started being wishy washy about wether he was coming back for a year, retiring, coming back and whatever. Aaron has never done that. And he has continued playing at a high level the whole time.

Im very much at the point where I think both sides are simply being childish.

I think it's probably a combination of a lot of things.

    A. - His qb rating had been dipping a tad year over year. He was about to be 37 and they felt he was in decline.

    B. - His playoff record since winning his super bowl has not been good.

    C. - He is quite the diva.

    D. - The GM office believes they can't win with such a pass heavy offense because it tires out the D. Meanwhile Rodgers doesn't want to hear that.

    E. - They thought they had their next qb. (Then we get reports he's been shitty in practice)

    F. - is for fuck

...Matt LeFleur. Because again, I don't care how many games he wins, he's a fucking idiot. He can win 10 super bowls. He'd be a ten time super bowl winning idiot. Somehow this is partly his fault. I just know it.

I don't think they want to get rid of Rodgers, but rather have the flexibility to move on if/when it's determined to be necessary while remaining a playoff contender.

We also have to remember that when Love was drafted, Rodgers had gone 5 years in a row without getting an all-pro nod and hadn't thrown more than 26 TDs in a season since 2016. Considering his age (36), while he was still playing well in comparison to the majority of other QBs, it definitely appeared he was in a downward trend (for the first time ever, it felt like the defense and running game were actually bailing him out throughout the 2019 season). He'd make a couple WOW throws every game, but was missing open receivers in 2017-2019 in a way we'd never seen before.

I don't think it was too farfetched at the time for people to predict that by 2021ish it might be time to move on if the right QB was available to them. Then of course he immediately has one of the best seasons (statistically) of any QB ever lol.

While that's make a point for things working against him, that doesn't mean most of these things are entirely his responsibility. Obviously C is, but putting the rest on him seems to fall into the lazy narrative but taking it a step further. The narrative is that the QB is the straw that stirs the drink but I think they're one-upping that and saying he is the drink and that they just don't like that flavor anymore.

It seems through personnel, lack of consistency or respect or trust, they've done wrong by him in a fair amount of ways and it's been boiling for a while.

Aaron Rodgers has a totally valid gripe in that his defense has been utter garbage for 90% of his Green Bay tenure. Dude really should be on ring 2 or 3 by now.

My brother, a Packers fan in his mid 30s, is about to get an ugly reality shock after living through two (of three) HOF QBs...

Let's see if everyone gets as mad about Tebow signing with the Jaguars as they would if Colin Kaepernick got signed by literally anyone.

With no guarantee to make the team? Sounds like an old coach throwing his former Heisman winning player a bone. If he makes the team, perhaps we will have an argument. I’ll wait and see if he does first.

I will never get over how easily brushed over Tebow kneeling during the national anthem because he couldn't "stand for a country that allows abortion" get another chance with a 5th team while Kaepernick has yet to get a second opportunity.

The Jaguars do not need the attention since they have a potential generational quarterback. ESPN leads their NFL Schedule release promos with "See where Trevor Lawrence plays his first NFL game" so they will have the spotlight

I never knew that it why Tebow knelt. I thought he just knelt as a sign of respect and humility (before God). Which did always make all the "Colin kneeling is disrespectful" talk extra dumb. I was taught that kneeling WAS respectful.

I do kinda remember him saying something about him saying a prayer about abortions stopping when he knelt but not that is WHY he was doing it.

Tebow getting chance after chance while Colin stays blacklisted pisses me off to no end.

That Kaep didn’t get a legit shot to at least compete for a backup job in 2017 was a fucking travesty, considering some of the shitty QBs who were in the two-deep depth charts at the time. Granted, he was a key part of something much bigger than football, but that’s beside the point. Even today, after four years away from the game, he’d be at the high end of the backup list. Colin would be a step-up on a handful of current “starters” and a pick’em on another half dozen.

Racist Christian pearlclutchers doing racist Christian pearlclutching things. What makes the “KaEp NeEdS tO sTaNd” argument even more obtuse is the fact that he knelt rather than sitting at the behest of a decorated Green Beret in Nate Boyer.

Kaep was a better NFL QB than Tebow. But he wanted starter money. He understood his legacy is very different if he never plays again than if he comes back. And winning the collusion case, along with the Nike money, means he doesn't have to play again.

This was the most annoying part about the Keep stuff. People kept saying he is better than "X" back-up. True, but he wouldn't have accepted "X's" contract.

Without thinking on it too much I'd put Ryan at 8 and move everyone back a notch.

Maybe just take Lamar out of the top 10 entirely though...I mean I love watching him play too but cmaaaahn.

Kirk Cousins should be higher than Tannehill and Carr.
