back in july of last year there was a major leak of nintendo code and documentation that revealed a ton of previously unknown info, from cancelled games to source code and even internal memos. one of these leaks was the source code from super mario advance, which reused samples from the original SNES game. the samples had the names of the instruments used in the original compositions, so the internet did what the internet do and managed to restore the original tracks, essentially making them sound similar to what they would have before they were compressed to fit into an SNES cartridge.

it's amazing how familiar, yet different, these sound. I'll always prefer the compressed as hell 16-bit versions, but i think these are super cool for existing.
