Rajah's 2020 Super NES Top Twenty Games

It's time for the Super NES countdown! No better way to start than a young Paul Rudd playing what is probably my favorite system. They don't make them like this anymore. Super NES has stood the test of time. I break mine out all the time and I'm proud to say I'm still rocking the same one I opened Christmas Day in 1995.

So PM me your top 20 games. Your choice, not best ever just your personal top twenty. I will grade by a point system, displayed below.

    20- 1 point
    19- 2 points
    18- 3 points
    Etc. Etc. Etc.
    3- 18 points
    2- 19 points
    1- 20 points

I figure we can start this up in the beginning of December or so. Plenty of time to get a list going!

I'll participate in this one too. I've been playing a bunch of SNES games over the last few weeks in preparation for this. Fantastic job on the NES list!

Nice! What games you been playing?

Thanks, I really enjoyed putting the NES list together. This one I think there might be more room for a battle at the top rather than one game running away with 1st like SMB3 did.

I got a excellent list from CWE already, keep them coming people!

Should be a good one. Plenty of games to choose from. I'm hoping a lot more people get lists in too.

I’ve got Romford’s non-Wrestler list thing to do over the week so when doing that, I will do yours at the same time too.

    Two birds, one stone.

@Jarrod1983 my list is in. I warn you before you read, it’s quite eclectic and obscure in some places and maybe showing my age a bit.

I'm in since I'm more familiar with the SNES compared to the NES (Never had one as a child.) This is a legit tough list for me. Choosing a number 1 is extremely difficult because there's literally 3 or 4 games that are worthy of being #1. Anyway i sent my list. This was fun!

I'm intrigued to see what the top 20 will look like once everything is finalized.

Awesome! I like waking up to a bunch of lists.

Just to make it easy on me if you're picking Street Fighter II make sure to clarify between Turbo and The World Warrior. It's been Turbo across the board but I don't want to assume its Turbo for the sake of 100% correctness. There is also Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers out there so the more specific you are with titles the better.

Thank you and thank you for entering lists already. This is going to be good. Already seeing some titles ranked higher than I'd have thought.

Any chance we could just bunch the versions of Street Fighter 2 as one entry?

That said, SFII probably won't be on my list. It was always more of a Genesis game for me.

    That would work for me.

I just didn't want to list someone as voting for Turbo and have them post saying they meant World Warrior.

Everyone has meant Turbo so far but I'm all up for double checking to make sure it is right.

Same for NBA Jam. Most have put NBA Jam, I do have 1 NBA Jam Tournament Edition in so for the people voting just Jam I hope you didn't mean the TE. I can change it if so just PM me.

I've got everything tallied that I have so far. 49 games have been entered. A couple surprises for sure, at least to me.

Isn't there several different versions of Mortal Kombat 3 as well? I doubt anyone would pick 3 anyway. I feel 1 and 2 were more popular on the SNES.

When I was putting my list together, I got the feeling a lot of us would choose the same, or very similar, top 5s. But I doubt anyone could accurately rank how this list will turn out.

It seems we all like RPGs but at different spots so they are canceling each other out. Fighting games and classic platflormers are clawing to the top. Going to be a battle for the top slots once more lists roll in.

I love the SNES but I only played the same handful of games over and over. Dunno if I could stretch it to 20.

I will send one. This was the one generation where I skipped Nintendo in favor of Sega Genesis, but I've of course still played many SNES games at friend's houses and on virtual console and whatnot.

I currently have an unordered list of 21, having already had to make some heart-breaking cuts. I'm glad there are a couple heavy-hitters I didn't play enough to feel comfortable ranking them, or else I'd be beside myself.

I promise my list will include no more than two imports.

    Done. That was tough.

From looking at it, I seemed to like mostly sports and fighting games at the time.

Well neither of those have gotten a vote yet.

Just finished the lists I got this morning. We got a bit of a 3-way dance for the top spot. Top 3 are starting to pull away from the pack.

I have received 9 lists so far. It's going great! Should have more than The NES Countdown by the time lists are done being sent in.

Probably need to do another list thread just for Mario games. Maybe Mario Paint will get some of the plaudits.

I actually had Mario Paint on my working list, but I couldn't quite justify it making the final cut.

Yeah there were some favs of mine I just couldn't fit.

Top spot is starting to pull away. The next few lists will either cement number 1 or take it down a spot or 2.

I always preferred the one based off TAS. Honestly, I think The Lion King and Turtles in Time were the only licensed games I had on my list despite there being a lot of great ones.

For example, Separation Anxiety and Maximum Carnage didn't make the final cut(though they were on the working list, particular Separation Anxiety).

Damn, that was a great beat 'em up.

I always did enjoy Maximum Carnage but it didn't make my final cut either.

I have a few licensed games on my list. I grew up on those gems whether they were shit or not.

    List sent.

most of my experience with snes came from kids at my church who had one. I also really like SNES ports of arcade games, so yeah, there are several of those on there. Some games are newer to me, mainly coming into my life with the snes classic thing. But yeah, my list has lots of fighting and beat em ups.

Yikes. I had that too but did not like it after playing Returns first. Once you got the hang of the controls it was alright but still could have been better.

Batman Forever might be the worst game I ever owned.

The controls were horrendous. I could not do anything in that game.

I'm not sure I ever made it past the 2nd level of Batman Forever but the music and sound effects are still nostalgic for me. When I bought a SNES Classic and hacked it I still felt the need to put it on there.

When it comes to SNES the games I grew up on, which was only a handful, were the ones my Dad bought. We had the SNES when I was like 6 and I'd say I actively played it til maybe I was 10, (because I think that's when we got a playstation) but it never crossed my mind to ask for games for it, I was more into getting Gameboy games.

Super Mario All-stars, Super Mario World , Donkey Kong Country and Top Gear 2 were probably the best games we had. ESPN National Hockey Night and Troy Aikman Football are two other games we had that I'm nostalgic for but am not sure if they're actually good. A friend gave me their copy of Super Mario RPG a few years after I started playing the SNES and I still love that game.

It wasn't until later in life that I played classics like TMNT Turtles In Time, Mega Man X, NBA Jam and Super Mario Kart.

I had the original Top Gear. I still love that racer. I was pretty dam good at it too which is something because I suck at racing games. I actually bought Top Gear 2 off E-Bay when I was stuck at home during the shut down. I didn't even know they had made a sequel. Lots more options for your car in the 2nd one it seems but I didn't get very far. Couldn't resist getting it though.

I still have my NES but traded my SNES for the N64. I kind of wish I'd kept all my old consoles. I put my NES Mini up on eBay within 5 minutes of trying it out but the SNES is where I started my gaming.

I still have my SNES. I sold my N64 but have since bought one again. My original NES died and I wasn't smart enough to fix it but I bought a boxed NES real cheap at a game store in town, Infinite Lives. Things had a mint box, NES, paddles, cords, manuels and stryfoam. I had to buy it just to give it a good home.

Spectrum - Probably still at my parents' house.
SNES - Think my brother still has it (or is it a second one he bought?)
Megadrive - No idea. Think one of the co-owners bought me out.
N64 - Gifted to my flatmate when I moved abroad.
PS2 - In a cupboard with all the 'bootleg' Ukrainian discs.
PS3 - Still under our TV. Gets occasional plays on Assassin's Creed 1-3

    Atari- Father gave it away!
NES- Broke, but replaced as described earlier.
    SNES- Original. 25 years running.
    N64- Pawned but replaced.
Game Cube- Original but only have Mario Soccer for it.
PS1- Pawned. Bought a mini which satisfies my Wild Arms & Metal Gear Solid fix.
PS2- Original. Still need my SD vs Raw GM fix.
PS3- Original. Plenty of games still on it.
PS4- Original. Thing sounds like a hovercraft trying to take flight.

I guess I could add having my original Gameboy still kicking.

I do have one of those Dollar General store bought Atari and Genesis consoles. I liked the Genesis because you can play cartridges on it too. Went out and bought Turtles, Hockey, Jurassic Park and a couple WWF games when I got it.

literally forgot I own a Wii holy shit. Great console but I haven’t played it in so long I forgot about it even though it’s literally 20 feet away from my work desk at home. Holy shit.

ooo yeah, I have my Gameboy pocket as it was my first ever console I purchased myself. I unloaded all my other game boys a couple years ago as the market was really high for them, so I made a ton of money. Kept my advance SP though, I think it’s the absolute best handheld Nintendo ever made. I play it frequently still.

I have a crazy amount of money sunk into my Wii. All those virtual console games. My stress reliever after waiting tables would be to buy a Wii Store card. Filled the Wii memory, I had to buy a chip for extra storage.

I have an 8 TB external hard drive hooked up to my PS4 so I can have all 190 games available at any time. Instead of redownloading a game later.

Atari - Mom threw it in the trash after purchasing PS1
Sega Master System - Mom threw it in the trash after purchasing PS1

I have a Commadore 64 and an Amiga 500 in the loft. I think I lost my SNES in some mad kids trade off years ago, actually I think that's how I have the Amiga.

Mainly though I just have everything on a Raspberry Pi hooked up to my bedroom telly. I love turning it on, playing for about 2 minutes before going "ah I can't be bothered" and going to sleep or whatever.

Between my brothers they had an Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Amiga 500 and a Master System in the house. Later on one of them got a SNES and I got a Mega Drive. I've still got both as well as an N64, GameCube, Wii, PS4 and two Switches (one hacked). They used to all be hooked up in the living room of my old flat but I moved to a smaller place and had to store the older consoles are under my bed. I'll probably sell the Mega Drive and SNES eventually as I can play the emulators no bother on the hacked switch these days.

We were a SNES family in probably a Mega Drive childhood community and had to rely on playing Sonic at other people’s houses.

On the return we had Starwing, SF2 Turbo, Zelda LTTP and Mario so we won. My dad actually grounded me once for trying to beat the Zelda butterfly boss instead of rushing to a Cubs meeting! Don’t get me started on the Ice Palace!

Oh and another note, challenged this guy to a fight in primary school for making fun of me but forgot all about it due to Zelda. Couple of my mates cycled to my house to remind “Oh they’re all waiting for you at the park!” “Oh yeah, just a sec while I save at Link’s House!”

*save and go to the park and kick his butt in front of that girl he fancied*

I'm a PlayStation person. It's a shame the PSP ended up not being interesting. I only got a PS4 in late 2018 and just played games on my PS3 until then, so I think I'm slowly, but surely, retiring from gaming. I haven't gotten any consoles at launch. Not sure why I'd start now.

I don't know what I'll go with for the next gen. Probably defaulting towards PS5, but will keep an open mind... though, if the rumors that they've bought franchises like MGS and Silent Hill off the troutshow that's Konami are true, I think my decision has been made.

Replaying Donkey Kong Country, forgot how difficult some of the levels are like the mine and the barrels.

The Mine is tough but once you play it enough you know those jumps so well it becomes more fun.

Everybody is napping at my house except me. I'm in Rose Town Forrest in Mario RPG about to fight Bowyer. I also thought that was lazy character naming. Too close to Bowser for my liking. I know he shoots a bow and whatever but c'mon come up with something else.

DKC2 is legit one of the best games ever. I got it without playing the first back in 1995 when it released, and it was weird going back to DKC after. DKC3 is amazing too. I just want to be able to play on the go again really.

I feel like DKC3 gets underrated because of the main characters. But it's my favorite hands down. I'd argue better than DKC2, but man...DKC2 is fucking incredible.

I liked the first best. That first one came with my SNES though. I was playing DKC right from the get go. I had less time with the other games but looked in every nook and cranny in the 1st.
