    Top 25 Non-Wrestlers Countdown

As the thread title suggests - anyone fancy sending me a list of people to form the top 25 non-wrestlers in WWE history.

To clarify, anyone will be eligible who performed an on camera role not wrestling. So as an example JBL would be judged by his commentary role only?

    Who's up for it?

I can try to give it a shot. When do you want the lists?

This could be fun. For clarification, you aren't necessarily looking for a list of the hottest WWE women, ignoring their wrestling, but only considering their backstage appearances or valet work?

Anyone who has been in front of the camera, not being judged on wrestling.

Could be commentators, announcers, managers, interviewers, valets, presenters, referees, male or female...

I'm down. There have been so many non-wrestlers in the WWF/E over the last 40 years that could make for some very very interesting lists. Especially if we're including people who were once wrestlers like JBL or Mick Foley in their non-wrestling roles they took up after "retiring".

I guess am struggling with #1 because I am not sure whether "Top" means most valuable, most entertaining, or most important, most influential, etc. There's a certain genetic jackhammer whose career has lasted significantly longer, and may be just above Heenan depending on how we subjectively rate this.

If Heenan doesn't win, its because the vote was clearly rigged - and besides, as he'd have said, its because someone like Vince (or Rom) allows ham-and-eggers and/or humanoids the right to submit a list.

Shit I glanced in here and thought Brain was a lock but Vince does complicate things. Good call.

Vince is an amazing heel, but I didn't particularly enjoy his commentary. A lot to consider. Heenan is obviously incredible.

Some other names to remind people of:-

    Mean Gene
    Gorilla Monsoon
    Brother Love
    Sensational Sherri
    Howard Finkel
    JR
    Paul Heyman
    Vickie Guerrero
    Jim Cornette
    Jerry Lawler
    Mr Perfect
    Shane
    Steph
    Eric Bischoff
    Elizabeth
    Jimmy Hart
    Jesse Ventura
    Sunny
    HHH
    JBL
    Michael Cole
    Joey Styles
    Mick Foley
    Tazz
    Slick
    Terri
    Mr Fuji
    Roddy Piper
    Ric Flair
    Stone Cold

Am sure there are plenty more...

You forgot Ron Simmons. DAMN! ( I don't think he'll crack the top 25, but man he's had some great non-wrestler moments)

Don't forget about Paul Bearer, Freddie Blassie, Captain Lou Albano, William Regal. Hornswoggle. Mae Young.

Wouldn't be able to scrape together 25 I don't think, but could definitely get a top ten or so.

If you can't come up with 25 non-wrestlers even out of order you are not a wrestling fan. Plain and simple. Especially if you've been posting on this board religiously for 20+ years.

I'll have you a list in about 5 minutes RP

I started a list a few days ago and couldn't find it when I went back, so I started another. I realized that the people I had in the top 10 or so were the same, but from 11-25 they are pretty much interchangeable.

I tried to keep my list "marketable" if that makes sense lol. I left out names like Toots Mondt, Eddie Graham, Bill Watts, Verne Gagne as a promoter, Baba, etc. just because the fucking list would be impossible and maybe a little boring to some. not saying if people that it's an issue but I mean, spoiler alert I have Mike Tyson on my list in the top 25. My list is basically key figures from the late 70's into the 90's

I kept mine WWE only, because this thread is the in the WWE wrestling folder. But I consider WWWF and WWF , as well as WCW, all part of WWE

Spolier Alert- Art Donovan is my 25. The fact Gorillla and Macho Man wanted to kill him after KOTR 94 is worth the 25 spot.

It's so bad it's good to me. I've had a couple drinking game nights with that PPV.

Yeah that's the one. It's hilarious. Genuinely love that show for the commentary. Randy Savage fuming.

Exactly. Shots will get you laid up by the time the show is over (been there). You could do a big gulp of whatever you're drinking too. Everytime there was a awkward pause in commentary after Art would say something too. Everytime he asks if that guy is a wrestler. I haven't played it in years but was a dam fun evening with the guys when we'd play.

I once did a drinking game for the 2005 royal rumble. Every time there was a chop you did a shot. Got fucked up real quick with benoit and guerrero chopped the hell out of daniel puder.

Rumble shot games are the best. Mystery entrants, crazy spots, or just when a favorite comes out. I've gotten pretty tanked over a few Rumbles.

My thoughts on above...never really sae much of Captain Lou, except when he managed the Headshrinkers.

Austin...had a decent run as Raw GM but didn't think it was enough to crack my top 25.

Apart from his GM run, his run as CEO albeit brief was great. That segment where he was in Titan Towers!

Possibly had that a bit high but hey I'm an Austin mark.

Capt Lou was a helluva promo guy, and he did his best work as a heel manager in a time where his guys didn't talk. He was a master of crowd heat using classic heel tactics like a manager cheap shot, but he often helped to get matches to that next level when he'd get caught by the babyface and sent to the floor. When he appeared as Cyndi Lauper's dad in the background of her first music video for Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, wrestling fans chuckled, but then she appeared on WWF programming and he became face supporting her, confusing fans to say the least. But it helped kick off the rock n wrestling era, a time when ratings really began to soar.

I didn't include Austin as a non-wrestler because while it was terrific, it was so brief.

I forgot about the CEO bit. That was great in fairness...JR cracked me up in that as well "Nerd". Lol

I thought about putting him in but there were so many other people in there who were (in my mind more deserving)…

I actually liked Michael in his first stint as commentator on Smackdown, plus his Cole Mine stuff was tremendous.

    I don't blame him for:-

    a) Not being JR
    b) Being overproduced by Vince

    Didn't make my cut though.

Michael Cole was genuinely hilarious during his heel run on the old NXT. He was great during the Lawler feud (well up until the dreadful match), god bless the Cole Mine. Over the years I've liked his commentary at certain points too but that was his peak for me.

Cole is really good at what he does, I imagine it's an incredibly hard and frustrating job to do.

Problem is the way he is produced makes it feel like he hates me. By that I mean fans back int he day were warmly welcomed in to watch wrestling. The lead announcer was there to be your friend, to keep you up to date with what is going on and to guide you through the show by saying things you generally agreed with. I have never really felt that with Cole as he feels like a bit of a robot. Not his fault at all and he has shown in environments where he is allowed to just be himself (like the UK championship tournament) that he is pretty good.

Cole is actually pretty amazing at his job. If my job required me to sit at a table that had a 40% chance of having someone sweaty being put through it, I'd probably go nuts.

He makes it seem as though he's convinced the best thing he's ever seen is what he's describing at the moment, and that he's never watched a wrestling show in his entire life before this. But then he'll come out with a "vintage" statement. And he does his "serious voice" as well as anyone, whenever someone's "hurt".

Mick is the first to make my list. I loved his run as Commissioner in 2000, it was way too brief they could have got so much more out of it.

Some of his stuff with the likes of Kurt Angle, Edge & Christian as well as being involved in the who ran over Stone Cold storyline. Classic stuff.

His 2016 run wasn't so good but lets not dwell on that one.

I left Shane off my list because he's always been presented as more of a wrestler than as an authority figure. He's the Best in the World and has a trophy to show for it.

Pretty high placing from me right? Reason being, Vickie was a complete 'civilian' prior to becoming a character on TV.

From that point on, she became a phenomenal heel. She was by the far the most over heel for at least 3 years in the company. She got Edge over to that hall of fame level by her pairing with him.

I would say she has been the best heel valet that I can recall in the last 20 years.

I don't think Cole is good at his job at all. The likes of Monsoon and JR added something to the show more or less every time, each of them have an endless list of quotes that form part of my enjoyment of the shows they commentated on. I can only think of two moments ever that Cole really nailed - the high-pitched excitement in his voice when Austin helped Foley win the title, and the stunned, low-key delivery "oh my God" when Punk beat Cena.

I haven't put in a list, but Heyman, Ventura and Heenan would be the big three for me, plus Vince of course.

He is good at the job he is paid to do rather than the job everyone would like him to be doing if that makes sense? As a corporate shill and catchphrase/nickname repeating machine he is good. I would imagine his job is a massive pain in the arse.

MIchael Cole is basically Don West as lead play by play. He's a terrible commentator but yes, as a pitch man he's ok. Even then, I would say he's a failure at that as well because if that's how we're going to label his job duties....Look at the ratings. Look at the house shows. Look at ppv and Network buys. If it's his job to bring people in, he's a fucking failure.

I had Vickie pretty high on my list as well. The heat she drew was incredible. At the same time, she naturally made her appearances important to the storylines. Listening to her appearances on a number of podcasts, she admits she often didn't know what she was doing, but she took her clues from the others around her. She credited her acting ability to seeing how hard Eddie used to work, practicing facial expressions / reactions etc. I give her a lot of credit for getting out when her heart simply wasn't in it - she recognized that the travel was too much for her own sense of peace. I am glad that she's been able to appear sporadically a few times since her "retirement", as the fans showed her how much we loved to hate her - it was the character and her actions (that we could inevitably tell were coming), that we were booing.

I left Hebner off my list for the simple fact that other than Montreal Screwjob, he wasn't really part of many storylines. I'd guess there aren't many refs that will make this list, which means they've done their job - other than a few seconds here and there, they should be invisible.

Earl Hebner was notable in the HHH/Rock/Austin storyline that came full circle at Backlash 2000. Plus the fact his long years of service and almost instantly recognisable when it comes to naming refs. I don’t blame him for his part in the Screwjob either as he was pressured by his boss.

He more than deserves a place on the list here.

I should be more clear - I don't have a problem with folks including Hebner, as these lists are by definition subjective, and he is probably at the top when it comes to refs that people can name. I have more of a problem with folks leaving Vickie off their lists.

She just missed the cut by one place on my list. It was between her and Cole who just made it.

Had her at 16. Maybe the manager that was easiest to hate over the last 15 years when she was a heel

IMO there have been lots of heel managers that have attained that level of heat or better. It was close in my mind, just goes to show the level of competition in my mind. I think also they made her a bit of a parody in my mind.

Cole is probably great for children or new fans that need to have things beaten over their heads. I think the reason most wrestling fans hate him is how patronizing his commentary is. But it serves a purpose. Just not for anyone here.

    Ugh.

Blame the micro-management scripted Vince headset control.
