    Create Your All-Time Dream Roster

Have we ever done this before? I think this could be fun.

Using any organization (WWF, WWE, NWA, WCW, ECW, AEW…) and any time (I expect to see tons of Lou Thesz picks), create your dream wrestling roster. The only rule is you can only pick each person one time. So if you pick "The Hart Foundation", you can not pick Bret Hart alone.

I am willing to increase/decrease the spots if people want. This was just my first idea. Feel free to pick a specific version of a wrestler if you want.

    Basic Roster (27 singles + 11 Tag Teams + 9 Females)

    7 MAIN EVENT
    Heavyweight Champion:
Main Event Challengers (3 good guys; 3 bad guys):

    9 MID-LEVEL
    Intercontinental Champion:
IC Challengers (4 good guys; 4 bad guys):

    11 TAG TEAMS
    Tag Team Champions:
Tag Team Challengers (5 good guys; 5 bad guys):

    11 LOWER ROSTER SPOTS
Pick Your Title (US, TV, Hardcore, anything…) Champion:
Your Title Challengers (5 good guys; 5 bad guys):

    9 LADIES
    Ladies Champion:
Ladies Challengers (4 good guys; 4 bad guys):

ANNOUNCERS: One play by play; one analyst

Feel free to add anything else you can think of.

Managers and/or valets? Sounds like a great idea to me (and no they don't count for the other spots)….
Use the "Freebird" rule and get three people on a tag team? A-OK…

I was watching an old Mr Perfect match and was wondering about him versus Y2J Jericho. Got me thinking…

Forgot to add, let get some stables / groups / organizations going too. Free picks to fill out the stables if needed.

EDIT: This is even harder than I expected. My first pass at "Main Event" is about 20 people. If we want to make bigger rosters, sounds OK to me. I just didn't want to make too big of an assignment. But bigger might be easier. We can let the group decide.

We can definitely cut back. I just thought it would be an easy way to get more names into the mix. Figured people would use guys who were more successful as singles guys but get Edge'd out by the numbers.

New Day; Outlaws; LOD; Demolition; Outsiders; Hardyz; Dudleyz; Edge and Christian; Steiners; Harlem Heat; Arn and Tully.

That is 11 without even really trying. We don't need that many tag teams for sure but when you start going through the names, there are a lot of people that you would want to pick.

I think I will have an easier time predicting @Donald's list than I will coming up with my own list.

    Jack Swagger
    Braun Strowman
    Tony Nese

    etc.

So... it turns out my attempt at a 40-person roster wound up with that classic "WCW bloat".

I tried to have 40 and wound up with 110.

And I wasn't even able to grab everybody I wanted.

Oh well, this was still fun.

I had the same issue when making the roster size. I kept bumping it higher and higher because I wanted to include more people. Maybe doing pre-merger team and post-merger team might have be a easier way to go.

    MAIN EVENT
    Heavyweight Champion: Ric Flair
    Main Event Challengers
    Andre The Giant
    CM Punk
    Randy Savage

    Hulk Hogan
    Steve Austin
    The Rock

Reasoning: This was my toughest part to choose as I am not really a main event type of guy. So instead of trying to push guys up the card who do not really belong there I went with 7 who I thought would create a good buzz. Flair is the most synonymous with being a champion to me so he gets the belt.

    9 MID-LEVEL
    Intercontinental Champion: Bret Hart
    IC Challengers:

    Rick Martel
    The Great Muta
    Mr Perfect
    Rick Rude

    Chris Jericho
    Shawn Michaels
    Daniel Bryan
    Jerry Lawler

Reasoning: Probably will be most peoples most fun part of the roster. Lawler may come as a surprise to some, especially as a face but he was super over and was always a solid worker. All my faces can easily flip to heel which is handy.

    TAG TEAMS
    Tag Team Champions: Demolition
    Tag Team Challengers

    Road Warriors
    Steiner Brothers
    The New Day
    Dudley Boys

    Midnight Express
    The Revival/FTR
    Fabulous Freebirds
    The Brainbusters

Reasoning: If I was going for my favourite teams I would probably find some room for The Rougeau Brothers or Power and Glory. Put Demolition as champs as the Road Warriors are better chasing. I could have easily replaced The New Day with the Hardyz or British Bulldogs

    11 LOWER ROSTER SPOTS
    US Champion: Walter
    Your Title Challengers

    Rusev
    Mark Rocco
    Adrian Street
    Goldust
    Earthquake

    Ricky Steamboat
    Cesaro
    Booker T
    Eddie Guerrero
    1-2-3 Kid

Reasoning: A US title scene dominated by nasty foreigners. Makes sense really. Have out Cesaro as a face, I find it mad that he is always a heel. Goldust and Street can turn into a tag team at some point.

    9 LADIES
    Ladies Champion: Charlotte Flair
    Ladies Challengers

    Molly Holly
    Leilani Kai
    Bull Nakano
    Shayna Baszler

    Asuka
    Piper Niven
    Wendi Richter
    Sasha Banks

Reasoning: Tougher than I thought it would be. Niven gets in as I wanted a face beast to match the heel beast of Nakano. People don't realize how good Lelaini Kai was. I went with Richter over Stratus for the big babyface role.

ANNOUNCERS: Kent Walton and Jesse Ventura

Reasoning: My play by play guy can be anyone as long as they are welcoming. What I mean here is back in the day the main commentator used to talk to you like you are his friend, you were welcomed to the show and brought up to date on all the news going on in wrestling. He was a good guy, you can trust him. So Walton, Monsoon, Solie, Ranallo even works here. Someone like Michael Cole does not. Not his fault but the way WWE shows are done make me feel like Cole hates me. Ventura is just the best so he was an easy pick.

10 OTHER (Managers or other on screen rolls)

    Bobby Heenan
    Jim Cornette
    Sherri Martel
    Elizabeth
    Lana
    Jimmy Hart
    Paul Heyman
    Gene Okerlund
    William Regal
    Howard Finkel

Reasoning: First of all Lana and Elizabeth are purely there to compliment their men. I think they both add massively to Savage and Rusev's act. Both are worthless beyond that. Heenan, Cornette, Martel and Hart are the greatest ever managers for me. Heyman is very close too and has multiple uses. Wrestling is not the same without Okerlund and Finkel and William Regal is my GM.

I considered having WoS guys in, but my roster ended up being Les Kellett, Kendo Nagasaki, and the rest.

Kent Walton is a fantastic shout on commentary. If it wasn't for Gorilla and Brain's chemistry as a pair I think I might well have gone for that too.

If you're using Andre The Giant right, I think you're going to find that signing him full time to any promotion for too long is a bad idea.

Until the WWF locked him down in his declining years, Andre was the best traveling gimmick attraction in wrestling. He's not best used as a full time roster member.

I do kind of wonder what semi-modern angle you could use "prime Andre" in. I know he did the traveling thing in his time but maybe with a good story it could work? The problem is he has no mic skills so that limits him. That is why Andre + Heenan was so good. Andre didn't have to hardly say anything. Just mumble and look menacing…

Playing up Andre as some mysterious "freak of nature" that a manager found to "take down" the hero would be pretty damn good.

With your roster? I'd go with The Rock vs. Andre The Giant. Heenan and Rock firing promos back and forth at each other. Rock was always a superb mic guy, could Bobby Heenan keep up?

You could even get your big "Hogan slams Andre" moment, but with The Rock. And instead of the Atomic Leg, he drops The People's Elbow on Andre and pins him.

    7 MAIN EVENT
    Heavyweight Champion: Bruno Sammurtino
Main Event Challengers (3 good guys; 3 bad guys):
    Faces - Cena, Rock, Austin,
    Heels - Savage, Lesnar, Flair

Reasoning - Sammurtino had the strength and ability to adapt his wrestling style to have a great match with anyone. All but Lesnar could work a crowd and were unquestionably qualified as legit long-term champs

    9 MID-LEVEL
    Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect
IC Challengers (4 good guys; 4 bad guys):
    Daniel Bryan
    Eddie Guererro
    AJ Styles
    Brett Hart

    Kurt Angle
    Shawn Michaels
    Jake the Snake Roberts
    Chris Jericho

Rationale - I wanted to add Chris Benoit here but we're trying to forget him

    11 TAG TEAMS
Tag Team Champions: Kane/UnderTaker aka Brothers of Destruction
Tag Team Challengers (5 good guys; 5 bad guys):

    Faces -
    The Usos
    Hardys
    New Day
    Edge/Christian
    Legion of Doom

    Heels -
    The Dudleyz
    Midnight Express
    Arn/Tully aka the Brain Busters
    The Wild Samoans
    The Shield

Rationale - Putting Kane/Taker in allows me to get Taker on the card, the best gimmick ever, and I have always loved Kane. With them on the roster, we'd be able to get Team Hell No - which was IMHO a huge part in bringing Bryan to all-time great level. I think the Usos might be becoming one of the very best all-time face tag teams, and I'd love to have seen them battle their grandfather's team of the Wild Samoans - the heel heat the Samoans got was incredible.

    11 LOWER ROSTER SPOTS
Pick Your Title (US, TV, Hardcore, anything…) Champion: Rikishi
Your Title Challengers (5 good guys; 5 bad guys):

Chico Santana (I have Jesse Ventura in the booth so he'd be called that)
    Sting
    Steamboat
    Owen Hart
    British Bulldog

    Paul Orndorff
    Rowdy Roddy Piper
    Big Bossman
    Golddust
    The Miz

    9 LADIES
    Ladies Champion: Charlotte
Ladies Challengers (4 good guys; 4 bad guys):

    Ivory
    Wendy Richter
    Beth Phoenix
    Becky Two Belts

    Heels -
Bayley (perhaps I am looking at this too fondly but her heel run has been amazing)
    Trish
    Chyna
    Moolah

ANNOUNCERS: One play by play; one analyst - Monsoon/Ventura. Gorilla was as good at his role as anyone. And Jesse invented the heel announcer role. And I have Heenan below under managers

Feel free to add anything else you can think of.

Managers and/or valets? I'll pick ten

Heenan - best heel manager ever
Heyman - second best heel manager
Paul Bearer - he added so much to Taker/Kane in terms of story
Capt Lou Albano (managed both the Samoans as a heel, as well as in Wendy Richter's corner as a face with Cyndi Lauper)
    Classy Freddie Blassie

    Miss Elizabeth
    Sherri Martel
    Vicki Guererro

    Mean Gene Okerlund
    Howard Finkel

One more category that will be needed -

Heard but not seen - Jim Johnston, composer His music will be with us forever, but his talent is missed

I am not trying to pick your roster apart as it's your roster. But why do you have two of the best heels as faces? Triple H and Ric Flair should obviously be heels. RVD was never a lowcard guy either. Team Reck were never faces either.

Well that's the thing. You can bring guys in however you want, but nobody said you can't turn them.

I had a real cool CM Punk/Ric Flair feud planned out, based on Punk as a Straight Edge heel and Flair, straight from the 1980's in his physical peak and prime, bringing all of that era's excesses with him. Punk would take issue with Flair's drinking, his cocaine use, his addiction to women and sex and he'd claim to be a better wrestler and a better athlete, because he doesn't abuse substances or waste his time chasing pussy.

And you could get a five month feud out of that without a World Title involved.

Triple H as a babyface, in an angle against a 2020 Chris Jericho has an appeal. Jericho's in the same spot now, in AEW, that Hunter was then. He's a very privileged main event player who's had his position handed to him. Imagine a Triple H, transplanted from a time when he was the uncrowned king of his own company, brought into 2020 where he gets to be the hungry upstart against a guy who he was trying to hold down.

Rob Van Dam is great, because you can move him up and down the card whenever and however you need to. He's an underneath guy fighting for the Hardcore Title one month. The next month, he's a World Title contender. He's constantly over and you can beat him like a drum and people never seem to lose faith in him. The reason he's only "lower midcard" on my wrestling totem pole, is because I've got more "current" and "relevant" guys higher than him. His position might not seem like a perfect choice, but he's malleable. You can bump him around for anything.

Team RECK were never faces? Eh. Fair. But I'm a mark for all four guys. If I'm booking my dream roster, they're all at their sort of early-2000's level and they're feuding with Contra Unit. Edge, Kurt, and Christian are underneath, comedy faces. Rhyno eventually breaks off and goes heel.

Tried to use people who were either champion in that division or were heavily involved in the title picture. Took a bit more free reign in the lower card due to there being several possibilities of lower card title I could use.

Fuck it, then. If we can just pair random dudes up as tag-teams, I want to add Chuck Taylor and Matt Cardona from 2020 AEW as a team.

They're the "Best Action Figure Friends". Chuck Taylor deserves to be left in a ditch somewhere and Matt Cardona's last partner was always a big 'ol "whatever". Take the two best guys from each team and make them into a jobber to the stars super team.

Team Andre up with Shawn Michaels against The Brainbusters or The Revival. Since you don't have Marty "I Killed A Bowling Alley Attendant" Jannetty, you could run the "Andre as a special partner" angle. That was always big with him.

What's especially funny is that Shawn used to piss off Andre when he'd drink too much and get too boisterous and loud, and Andre would always tell him to shut the fuck up. There's a story about The Rockers wrestling Andre and Haku and Shawn Michaels being terrified Andre was going to kill him if he got his big mitts on him. Andre was super professional in the ring and handled Shawn as carefully as he did anyone else.

Yeah, IIRC all of them, with the exception of Snitsky, were in the tag team division at one point.

I've got enough guys for a brand split.

    70 wrestlers on each show?

    Maybe a three-way brand split?

Thanks to Stan, I'm now incredibly intrigued by the idea of Bruno Sammartino vs. Vader. Really, if Vader would have been alive and wrestling like 20 years before he was, he'd have been the perfect guy to beat Bruno.

Imagine Vader doing to Bruno what Vader did to Antonio Inoki. Instead of a riot clearing out the Tokyo Dome, they'd have to call in the entire NYPD to keep people from setting the seats on fire at Madison Square Garden.

I need to work on that time machine.

I think you should just instill the brand split idea, or just use different shows like who would you put on AEW, WCW, TNA, etc.

Welp, I thought I'd taker a stab at this. Not an easy task. Roster's a bit beefier than the initial post suggested but I'll say I rotate my on-screen talent so they all get rested and not run ragged. Here's what I got:

    11 MAIN EVENT
    Heavyweight Champion: Ric Flair (heel)
    Main Event Challengers:
    Faces:
    1. John Cena
    2. The Undertaker (purple gloves era look but late 2000's era in-ring)
    3. Shawn Michaels
    4. Mick Foley (can dabble in all three faces as needed as well as just being himself)
    5. Sting (neon surfer era)

    Heels
    1. The Rock (Hollywood heel run '03)
    2. Vader
    3. Edge
    4. The Great Muta
    5. Mark Henry (Hall of Pain World title reign era)

    11 MID-LEVEL
    Intercontinental Champion: Randy Savage (face)
    IC Challengers:
    Faces:
    1. Daniel Bryan
    2. Goldust
    3. Aleister Black
    4. AJ Styles
    5. Keith Lee

    Heels:
    1. CM Punk
    2. Cesaro
    3. Kevin Owens
    4. Bam Bam Bigelow
    5. Kurt Angle

    11 TAG TEAMS
Tag Team Champions: The Hardy Boyz (face)
    Tag Team Challengers:
    Faces:
    1. The Usos
    2. Chris Benoit & Chris Jericho
    3. Legion of Doom
    4. APA
    5. Cryme Tyme

    Heels
    1. The Dudley Boyz
    2. Miz & Morrison
    3. Cade & Murdoch
    4. World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin)
    5. Bad Intentions (Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson)

    15 LOWER ROSTER SPOTS
    Television Champion: DDP (face)
    Your Title Challengers:
    Faces:
    1. Dexter Lumis
    2. Perry Saturn
    3. R-Truth
    4. Mustafa Ali
    5. Ricochet
    6. Sonny Kiss
    7. Steve Blackman

    Heels:
    1. Cameron Grimes
    2. Raven
    3. Bobby Lashley
    4. Big Daddy V
    5. Neville
    6. Mortis
    7. Papa Shango

    Ladies Champion: Asuka (face)
    Ladies Challengers:
    Faces:
    1. Molly Holly
    2. Rhea Ripley
    3. Abadon
    4. Kairi Sane
    5. Shotzi Blackheart
    6. Piper Niven

    Heels
    1. Charlotte Flair
    2. Mercedes Martinez
    3. Jazz
    4. Awesome Kong
    5. Ronda Rousey
    6. Trish Stratus

    MANAGERS/VALETS/ETC.:
Vickie Guerrero - heel, managing Awesome Kong
Paul Heyman - heel, managing Cesaro but without the Lesnar bullshit to undermine it so it actually works
Hornswoggle – heel manager like when he was with 3MB, managing Bad Intentions
William Regal – face, authority figure like he currently is in NXT
Robert Stone – heel, managing Big Daddy V
Alexa Bliss – heel, she's a better talker than wrestler so she'll shine on the mic and only get physical as needed, with the Harley Quinn-esque gimmick she's going into these days but with Raven as her Joker (they'll eventually turn face and feud with the Wyatt Family as Raven starts to build his Flock by “freeing” members)
The Boogeyman – face, haunts the arena and pops up to spook folks, occasional in-ring appearances to attack folks but doesn't actually wrestle in matches
Dusty Rhodes – backstage role developing talent like he had in NXT
Triple H – backstage role like currently in NXT but occasionally pops up when shit really goes sideways and Regal alone can't control it

    STABLES:
    Face:
The New Day (Xavier Woods/Kofi Kingston/Big E) – primarily in the tag team scene, Freebird Rule if champs, occasionally dabble in singles pursuits but with the support of the group
The Riott Squad (Ruby Riott/Liv Morgan/Sarah Logan) – functioning as a well-oiled unit like at Evolution but turned face as the “alternative” upstarts with Ruby pursuing the Women's title
The Shield (Roman Reigns/Dean Ambrose/Seth Rollins) – same situation as New Day but they'll eventually split up

    Heel:
Team B.A.D. (Naomi/Sasha Banks/Tamina) – basically just to get Naomi and Sasha so I can have them in the women's division, this stable would go for a bit before Naomi/Sasha's egos get in the way, they feud, Naomi turns into her Feel The Glow face while Banks goes full-on Boss heel with Tamina as her bodyguard
The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt/Erick Rowan/Luke Harper/Braun Strowman) – Wyatt sits back and fights far less often while the big boys do his dirty work, he'll gun for a singles belt here and there, Rowan/Harper pursue the tag titles, Strowman's basically Wyatt's right hand man and eventually will snap and leave the group awhile down the line, we'll hire local wrestlers to bulk up the cult as well
El Legado de Fantasma (Santos Escobar/Raul Mendoza/Joaquin Wilde) – Escobar pursues the US title while Joaquin/Raul pursue the tag team titles
The Spirit Squad (Johnny/Mikey/Nicky/Mitch) – Freebird rule, tag title scene

    ANNOUNCERS:
    Play by Play: Mauro Ranallo
    Color: Corey Graves
Hosting Duties: Renee Young, Scott Stanford

Feel free to ask any questions about this hot mess.

Why not turn AJ Styles heel so you can feud him with Randy Savage?

    That's a legitimate dream match.

I actually had Styles on the heel side originally but then I switched him around with Bam Bam 'cuz I thought it was redundant having both Bigelow and Lee as agile hefty boy faces and according to my research (since his run was before I was watching) Bam Bam was primarily a heel and probably better suited for that role. Plus AJ's great face or heel and I could always do face/face Styles/Savage and/or turn AJ down the line.

If you've got Keith Lee and Bammer on opposite sides of the roster, that needs to be a feud in your dream roster.

Keith Lee goes over on his way up the card.

Whereas I found myself struggling in the tag team department. Initially had two empty spots on the heel side and had to do some research to fill things out.

It's definitely not as negative as you are making it sound.

I say we just create our own shows and go from there.

If you had to make it a 3 man team would you go with Walton or somebody else?

(oops bumped by accident, hoping it revives this thread though)

I don't think I would. It's more a style thing insofar as Walton would really have to be the sole voice of the show, which I think was essential to the WoS presentation.

If I was going for a third person to accompany Brain and Gorilla? Tricky one. I found Ranallo overblown in NXT but I can imagine Brain responding to his animation would have been very funny, so I'd go him.

I was thinking somebody like Byron Saxton or a rotating 3rd wrestler.

I disagree. Having him paired with somebody like Heenan works great long-term.

You just put him in matches. What do you mean?

"Prime Andre" would be a physical freak. I think it would be hard to find the line between "unstoppable force" and "realistic fight". How do you allow Andre to dominate the way his physical size requires but not just turn every match into a squash? Not impossible but it does require planning.

If he is the face, who is ever going to dominate him before the eventual "hero recovery"? If he is the heel, who is going "comeback" from Andre kicking his ass for 20 mins and keep it realistic?

That's a good point, you would just have to make sure you build his opponents up well enough before they take him on.

What do we think of Jerry Lawler vs. Andre?

Triple H was a face in D-X, and I have a hard time believing people don't want to cheer for Flair.
