Feel like for many people this film gets albatrossed by the sequels. This one, in and of itself, was so thoroughly fantastic. Cutting edge in every way, from the sci-fi material to the action/fight sequences, to even the corny but pitch-perfect armless Morpheus sunglasses. It wasn't an altogether innovative story (chosen one delivers his people from oppression), but it was put together in such a perfect hi-tech delivery that was just so befitting the era it was in. People were clamoring for that kind of futuristic 'oracle-esque' view of where their world was seemingly on the cusp of heading.

The casting was great (always funny to consider the near casting of Will Smith for Neo), the costumes and sets were great, the cgi was near-perfect for it's time. Just a complete sci-fi homerun.

I saw this like 5 times in theaters. My mother always liked Reeves and it got me into the theaters for this. The sequels were OK. I don't think the ending of the third did the series any favors in my eyes. I do remember thinking the cliffhanger in two was good. Just couldn't stick the landing. I am looking forward to 4 very much.

I had all sorts of thoughts in my head for where they were going after 2 (I was convinced the Matrix was 2 levels deep), and then 3 just shit all over it.

However, they should have stopped at 1. A complete perfect story had been told.

I remember walking out of the cinema after seeing The Matrix and feeling like my view on existence had changed. One of my most memorable movie going experiences. Such a good flick. And I don’t even think about the sequels one bit, they don’t take anything away from the first one.

Eh…. If this movie wasn't held up as some masterpiece I might like it more. But a certain type of person holds this movie such esteem and puts so much importance into it, it makes me hate it more and more

Fight Club is an excellent movie and I had it 9th, so right where it ended up on our aggregate list. I don't think it's the most rewatchable movie due to its intensity, darkness and the character twist but it's still one I revisit every 3 or 4 years and enjoy. Fincher is the man. The Game is another one of his I love and it would have made my top 20 if I hadn't forgotten about it, but no one else voted for it so it didn't matter anyway.

Was close to having The Game at the bottom of my list. Much much better film than Fight Club, imo.

+1. The Game is awesome. So much better than Fight Club. I like it more than Se7en even. But that is just because I like psychological thrillers more then violent thrillers.

Yeah, both this and T2 were both game changers weren't they. Before T2, some special effects from films in that era look super lame now. Just look at Total Recall as an example.

The Matrix equally took special effects into a new age. I agree with the comment that the subsequent sequels definitely impacted peoples views of this. Had this been a standalone film, it would be held in much higher regard.

Terminator 2 is, in my mind, the best action film ever and is perfect.

Really thought this had a chance for the top spot. At least top three in the mix with Pulp Fiction and Shawshank. I think maybe this just gets a little taken for granted among Scorsese's and DeNiro's libraries and among mob films after the volume of them that came out following this and The Sopranos. But this one is really the quintessential modern mob flick.

I am always amazed when people haven't see all-time classic movies. But I am also the person who has seen only seen 2 of the top 25 grossing movies of all-time so clearly I am not in any position to judge anyone.

I too would have expected Goodfellas to be higher. There have been a lot of classic mafia movies/shows over the years but it's right up there with the best of them, along with Casino. There are so many memorable scenes in Goodfellas, from Scorsese's legendary one-shot going into the nightclub to the "funny-how" scene. But unlike The Godfather or Scarface or other crime movies, it's based on a real story so the climax isn't what you're there for. There's no big ending, no satisfying arc for the main character. Henry gets busted and snitches on his family and lives in witness protection. He doesn't change, he's not a good guy, it just sort of ends. It's more like a slice of life kind of movie. Sure there's plot and it covers 25 years but it's more about seeing how these guys interact, how they enjoy the fruits of their crime, deal with their wives, etc. So yea I agree it was very influential, certainly the biggest inspiration for The Sopranos.

I honestly turn off the movie as soon as Henry gets arrested. But I still would put in the top 3. Maybe 4th.

I have one other movie in mind that I don't think will even get mentioned but I would also STRONGLY consider for Top 3 (with Pulp, 'Fellas and Shawshank), I might even have it #1.

EDIT: Shit. Just remembered one more (that will be mentioned). Now 5th seems reasonable…

I'm a fan and had it 12th. I think it's slightly overrated here, certainly I would put Goodfellas above it, but it's a certified classic serial killer thriller. Red Dragon was a fantastic sequel as well. I think I prefer Red Dragon - I love Norton and it has the better ending IMO, although it's been a number of years since I watched Lambs in full.

It only received 5 out of 15 votes (the last several entries received 6 votes) but 4 out of those 5 had it in their top 6.

Here is our summary and I will tell you that the films ranked between #6 and #12 were all separated by only 9 points (they all received between 70 and 79 points) so those rankings could have been easily flipped around had we had additional voters. There is a big gap between #6 and #5 (which received 90 points), and then an even bigger gap between #5 and the top 4.

No problem admitting I rate this higher than most everyone. Don't care though, I love it. I remember watching this as a youngster and being captivated. It was the first film I fell in love with and I watched it over and over.

It was horrific and thoughtful and eery and elegant all at the same time. It juxtaposed its conditions alongside its star in the absolutely incredible Lectar while the timid but able rookie was continuously trapped between these angles and between two terrifying monsters. I could still watch it in a breeze to this day and probably recite every word along the way. Glad it got some love from some other peeps as well.

I would have expected it to be around 5th so probably about where I'd put it. Slightly over-rated as the parts without Lecter or Buffalo Bill are pretty boring. But you can't take your eyes off Lecter for one second when he is on screen and the scenes with Buffalo Bill are legendary.

This movie was never my jam. Not that I don’t like it, I just never saw it until much later one (I’m guessing I watched it around 2008) and then it didn’t leave an imprint on me. A very important film and subject matter certainly. Maybe it was too bleak for me. Or I just didn’t give it a proper dive-in. But in any event, it is very well regarded on many all-time film lists. Maybe one day I’ll give it another viewing.

Watched it once and never was compelled to see it again. A very fine movie but not the kind of movie anyone wants to watch again and again.

As mentioned before on here, I have not seen so many so called classics. So quite pleased to say I have seen 10 of the films listed so far.

    Still not Terminator 2 though.

Love the stuff between Will and Chuckie and his boys (cole Howser is especially great) and will and the doctors but don’t really enjoy the Skyler part. I’d put in the 6-10 range.

crazy to think they wrote that as kids. Wonder if Matt and Ben would ever try to write something together again.

Does everyone know the 4 left? I feel dumb because I can only think of three. I just assume we didn’t Titanic or Shakespeare in Love

any hints? Did any action make it or would they all be called “dramas”?

No hints (where’s the fun in that?) but one of the final four surprised me so I can understand why you can’t peg it.

Forrest Gump, Titanic, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction, I'd imagine.

3 of them are Pulp, Shawshank and Usual Suspects. Can't really see them not making it; but then I would have never predicted that Goodfellas wouldn't be in that group too.

I think we called Forrest Gump a comedy in the rulings. Titanic is possible; Braveheart seems less likely. Rounders had a decent shout I thought but that seems like it would have been around 10, not 4th.

The one I would put that I don't think will make it is "Jurassic Park". That is an incredible movie that is still completely rewatch able but since it is action, I think it got left off too many ballots.

I definitely wouldn't want a big hint. But a small one to get the brain moving is fun.

Like say: Was the lead actor also the star in any other movies that made the list?

EDIT: Just had a long shot idea, I wonder if it made it. The one I am thinking of definitely should have made the top 20 so I would say it has a chance. And the lead actor was in another movie on the list already.

It involves one of the most iconic action scenes of the entire decade. But since it is also action, it probably also missed the cut…

There are several top-notch films on my list that didn't crack the list so far, but Shawshank is definitely there.

Would we call Toy Story a drama? Barely feels like a comedy sometimes but whatever you call it, it is one of the 20 best movies of the decade.

There has long been suggestions that they didn’t write it, or that it was heavily edited/supervised and that they were sold as the co-writers because two handsome young actors writing and starring in a film together sells better come awards season.

I think they wrote the first draft but they had a lot of help editing it into a coherent story. Like we do know that originally the movie included a whole second half where Will is being hunted by the CIA that they smartly cut.

I thought we called Gump a comedy or I would have at least consider it. A very, very watchable movie that is now underrated because it got shit on for so many years.

But it is still only the third best movie made in 1994 behind Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption. So it should have not won the Oscar.

I had Gump as a drama, similar to considering Terminator 2 an action movie, thus leaving it off my list for this thread.

I don't have any issue calling Gump a drama. It does probably fit better as a drama then as a comedy. I just remember reading the original thread where the ruling went the comedy way to start but then the consensus seems to have changed it. I just never went back and read the update.

I did originally propose that Gump should go in as a comedy but was rebuffed, and I think you guys were right that drama is the right call. It was submitted as a drama to the Golden Globes, for what that's worth.

Very funny movie though. Just off the top of my head I think of Forrest dropping his pants in front of the president, jumping off his shrimp boat and then we see it floating by on its own and crashing, and when he makes that speech at the anti-war demonstration but no one can hear it because the mic is unplugged, and runs all the way out of the stadium after scoring a touchdown because he doesn't know when to stop.... this movie's got so many laugh out loud bits.

Great movie. I think it deserves its spot here. I agree with _me that it was so beloved originally, and then got played to death on cable television and whatnot to the point that it got worn out so people aren't as high on it. But it's still a classic.

I still wash my feet thoroughly because of this movie.

Yup, even by looking at the people who denied writing the script instead, it’s clear that it was taken to many big successful scriptwriters to consult on.

This would have been my #1. It is totally splitting hairs between Pulp, Shawshank and Usual Suspects and there is no wrong answer.

But Pulp Fiction changed movies more than the other two so I give it the tiebreaker.

    1. Pulp. 2. Usual Suspects. 3. Shawshank.

Pulp is funnier so it becomes more "rewatch able". I can't really argue it is a better film though. One of the main reasons I have it over Shawshank too.

Shawshank is absolutely going to be #1 considering the demographics of this place.

Silence of the Lambs is only rated highly because of Hopkins. Outside his scenes it's a pretty bland movie.

    The Shawshank Redemption

Synopsis: Two imprisoned men bond over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.

    Released: September 23, 1994

I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Andy would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Andy - that was his routine. I do believe those first two years were the worst for him, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him.
Really Red? You think the time he was getting repeatedly raped was the worst for Andy? Going out on a limb there…

Frank Darabont made the 2 best 90s dramas and he isn't even a household name. what a legend

Fun Fact: he went on to direct 2 more films, The Majestic and The Mist.

How did Boogie Nights not make the list either? And Fargo is so underrated now.

Mine that I would like to see if they got votes include your list plus:

    Usual Suspects
    The Fugitive
    Thomas Crown Affair
    Chasing Amy
    A Few Good Men

Plus some actions ones (Jurassic Park, Speed, Scream)

Everyone should have had Leon The Professional in their top 20.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Shawshank but I was young and don't remember it at all really. I'll watch it again at some point.

I loved The Green Mile. That movie really stuck with me and I was so sad when the actor Michael Clarke Duncan died, he was so talented.

The Green Mile is slightly overrated imo.

Here are the next 20. The second number is # of votes received, followed by # of points. Jurassic Park was the biggest miss to me. I had it 2nd overall, Chris had it 1st, and the other 13 voters didn't include it. It was probably the biggest victim of the "action movies aren't dramas" mindset.

    21 Jurassic Park , 2 , 39
    22 Leon , 3 , 39
    23 Titanic , 3 , 38
    24 Edward Scissor Hands , 4 , 37
    25 Beauty and Beast , 3 , 36
    26 Sixth Sense , 4 , 36
    27 Boyz In the Hood , 4 , 35
    28 Fugitive , 3 , 34
    29 Casino , 3 , 32
    30 Dazed and Confused , 2 , 32
    31 Natural Born Killers , 3 , 32
    32 American Beauty , 2 , 29
    33 A Few Good Men , 2 , 26
    34 Before Sunrise , 2 , 24
    35 Boogie Nights , 3 , 24
    36 In The Name of the Father , 2 , 24
    37 Festen , 1 , 20
    38 Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels , 1 , 20
    39 Point Break , 2 , 20
    40 Remains of the Day , 1 , 20

'Dazed and Confused'? That has to be a comedy doesn’t it. It was going to be one of my top 5 for comedies for sure; has a decent chance of #1.

I still can’t believe 'Boogie Nights' is so low.

'Jurassic Park' would have been in my top 5 easily. Probably 2nd or 3rd. Behind Pulp and maybe Usual Suspects.

'A Few Good Men' would have also been in my top 10, probably close to 6th. Nicholson is iconic as Jessup.

No votes for 'The Thomas Crown Affair'? Have people not seen it or just not like it? I think that is a great film.

I’ll post the full list shortly.

Dazed and Confused is eligible for comedy even though some people submitted it on their drama lists.

Cool. Thanks for the effort of doing this. Always fun. Mad at myself for not getting you the final list. Damn work got busy that week.

I am going to get you the comedy list by the end of the week if that works. I have my first cut; now I just need to sort them. It is going to be frustrating when about 8 of my top 10 don't even get listed. But that is half the fun of these…

Yes that works. I think I still only have 11 comedy lists. I need at least 4 more before we can begin the countdown.

Does this mean you have watched 13 out of the 20 or voted for that many?

I am a child of the 90s so I have literally seen everyone of these movies. I have seen 16 of the 20 more than 5 times each. I still own 13 of the 20 on DVD. So yeah, this was right in my wheelhouse. The comedy list will be the exact same if not even higher.

I will get a comedy list in by Thursday. Or does it include anything that isn't "drama"?

Are action films considered comedy if they had funny moments?

a good trick would be to look up the movie you're considering on Wikipedia and see if comedy is in the description. For instance on the Dazed and Confused wikipedia site the first sentence is:

Dazed and Confused is a 1993 American coming-of-age comedy film written and directed by Richard Linklater.

wheras the first sentence on Con Air is:

Con Air is a 1997 American action thriller film directed by Simon West...

if you still have ones you aren't sure of, ask me for clarification.

    Fair enough.

I will say that the biggest shock to me is that you said there were 15 Rajah posters who submitted their own lists, yet Shawshank only appeared on 9 of them? How could it be completely left off of so many lists?

Let's ask her. Maybe she knows. What say there, fussy-britches?

Well put it this way: Shawshank and Good Will Hunting were the leaders in terms of # of votes at 9 out of 15. No movie was on more lists than them. Also a few people didn't submit their top 20, they submitted their top 10-ish.

The Usual Suspects was only on 1 out of 15 lists (Romford Pele). I too was surprised that it didn't rank higher, even though it didn't make my personal top 20. It's tough, I mean this is a decade of movies (and a really good decade at that) and there were way more than 20 classics. If we had, say, 25 voters instead of 15 you would have more diversity in the voting patterns.

Here's the full list. Ties are not accounted for in the numbering, and the word "The" has been removed from the titles for sorting reasons.

Thanks again for doing this, Fro.

I loved Shawshank and find it is one of those movies (like Jaws) that when it is on if I am channel surfing, I usually find myself watching the rest of it until the end.

I did have Green Mile on my list, but lower. I really enjoyed it, but since I had read it first, and the book was much better, it suffered from comparison to the book.

I was also surprised that there was no love for Rudy. This was, to me, one of the top 3 sports movies ever made, yet nobody else had it on their top 20 of the 90's? Yeah, maybe it's harder to rewatch it now and not think of our hero as a hobbit.

I’m just back from seeing Jurassic Park in the cinema as part of some older films being screened over here (because aside from Tenet, there’s barely anything else to see at the moment). It still holds up after all these years. The sounds and the score are made for the cinema. A timeless classic. It’s a big shock to see it outside the top 20. As much as I love Independence Day, and my only ranking of it probably contributed, it has no business pipping Jurassic Park to the post.

Hopefully we get more lists for things like this in the future. I’ll have my comedy list by the end of the week.

I don't think Shawshank is that great a movie as such, just that it strongly resonated with Gen X/millennial men because of it's portrayal of a positive male adult friendship not based on competition with each other, which was rare as rocking horse shit in the 80s and early 90s.
