Rajah's 2020 NES Top Twenty Games

I love countdowns and my inspiration from the last month is starting one right now. Not sure if it's been done but this will be the 2020 reboot if so.

So top 20 games. Your choice, not best ever just your personal top twenty. I will grade by a point system, displayed below.

Edit. It was Ten but people wanted Twenty and I'm up for the task. If you only entered 10 that's fine to keep it there or you can send me your 20-11 picks as well.

    20- 1 point
    19- 2 points
    18- 3 points
    Etc. Etc. Etc.
    3- 18 points
    2- 19 points
    1- 20 points

Let's say a week or so to get them in (PM me the lists please) and I'll start unveiling our choices. If people enjoy this countdowns will continue with other lists.

Edit. One more week to make sure everyone has a chance to enter a list of they'd like.

We definitely did this before, but it's probably been over 5 years now, and it'll be interesting to see if anything changes.

    I'm in.

I figured it must have happened at least once but it will give me something to do with my down time at work. Glad you're in and hope more follow your lead.

One list in, not counting mine. If anything I'll make a thread of old NES commercials. C'mon people!

Although I personally had them on the same cartridge as many people did, I would say Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros should be separate since I know they weren't always packaged together.

Sorry, never had a NES. Don't even think I've played an original one.

I would agree. Two different games.

Well shit Stan. I figure I'll work my way up through systems. NES was my first so that's where I started. Have you never even played NES games on a Wii or something?

I remember my brother having Super Mario all-stars for his SNES. Think I played the original in the arcade that used to be on this site a while back as well.

Crazy. There is a huge library of games just waiting for you Stan!

The countdown should have been named the "Top Ten NES Games Stan Has Missed Out On".

Maybe. Like I said this is a reboot. Maybe people's tastes have changed. Plus, it helps me occupy work down time.

    Thanks for your list Brock!

Just typing games out that I played growing up, I'm at 47...this...might be a little difficult to narrow down.

If everybody wants to up it to 20 then I'm game. I wasn't sure how well this countdown would go over with everybody so I figured 10 would be easiest. If everybody wants though I know I can come up with 20 too.

Maybe send in a list of 15 and make 10 from that? Or extend the list to 15 fully. But 20 might make it more of a hassle for Jarrod, especially if it's for a smaller turnout.

I'm down for whatever Jarrod and the public is down for. I can easily make a list of 20 if that's what's asked of me

I've gotten a couple lists but I'm willing to do 20. People that have submitted lists can send in their 20-11 if they want. I'll grade 1st place gets 20 points, 2nd gets 19 etc still like explained in the first post.

I can extend the deadline a week as well.

I don't want to wait too long but want everyone who wants in to be able to have enough time to make a list.

Unfortunately I didn’t own a NES. If there’s a SNES thread could help you out there.

I was planning on SNES for the sequel.

Even if you only have played like 5 NES titles you should enter them. The more entries the more the points will spread so I don't end up with too many ties.

Literally the only time I can recall playing a NES in my childhood was when I was hospitalised and happen to bump into one of my mates who was also in the hospital and we got to play Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES. I had nothing between Commodore 64 and SNES and most of my mates had Segas so played at their house.

I’ll join in on the sequel.

Send whatever you got. 10, 12 or 20. I'll grade whatever is sent. I'm looking forward to putting this all together!

Lists are trickling in. I was hoping when I started I'd be overwhelmed with lists but not quite. Plenty of time though. Get them in people!

I've compiled a rough lost of titles I want to include. Now I just have to order them and exclude some. I may look through a database to make sure I'm not forgetting anything.

The NES is not my strong point, probably not a lot of UK people strong points actually as we were more into the Spectrum and C64 etc at that time.

That was harder than I thought it would be. Ended up leaving off two heavy-hitters because I enjoyed the sequels more. There's also a good handful of games I left off mostly because I didn't play enough of it. Like Blaster Master.

There were also two I almost didn't include because the arcade versions are superior, but I played them on the NES more than anything else.

The NES sold 1.5 million copies in the UK.

Putting my list together now and it’s not easy when you’re younger than actual console. Most of my NES experience has been through ROMs, RasPi, and the NES Classic.

Yeah and most people played about 3 games on it as the games were too expensive. The Spectrum sold about 5M and you could just copy the games or buy them from corner shops etc for 3 quid.

I can only remember one lad in school who had a NES. Everyone seemed to have a SNES though.

I love the idea of this topic. On my top 10 list of games, 3 or 4 of them I didn't own, but a friend did, and we'd play them at their home or they'd let me borrow it because swapping games was something we did and respected one another's stuff. I got enough money in my pocket to buy a game or two maybe once a year, so I'd blow it on as many NES titles when one of the department stores would do its shelf clearing after blowout sale. I ended up with a bunch of stuff that was thought of as crap then, but gold nowadays. I was the only one in our circle that had Ninja Turtles.

Yikes. I've been burnt on lending stuff before too. It got to the point, after I lent my cassette of WWF Wrestlemania: The Album and it was returned after about 6 months with no case and a couple gouges in the cassette, that I stopped lending. If you're at my house and want to play with whatever, go for it but stuff stays home.

I love this topic too. NES was my first taste of video games.

Keeping sending lists people. Like I said I'll extend deadline one more week to make sure everyone has a chance to send one.

Yeah CWE brought up 20 originally and I'm up for 20. I just did 10 because I wasn't sure if anyone would do this. Send me your 20-11 Hero!.

In fact if a mod can change "Ten" to "Twenty" in the title I would appreciate it. 2020 Top Twenty has a better ring to it too!

I'm a stickler for the original. In the United States the top loader was bargain bin junk I only saw at Toys R Us a full 2 years after the SNES was released. Nintendo only released a limited amount of them, and that's why they are valued by collectors and go for insane prices on eBay. I remember seeing them cheap in the early '90s before the NES was phased out in '93 due to 16-bit systems.

Points have been added up and out of 89 entered games I have Rajah's Top Twenty prepared. I will get Number 20 up soon.

If a certain number is tied I counted both games as that number. So some numbers will have more than one game.

One of the first racers I remember playing. Also one of the first ones I remember where you can fire rockets or drop bombs.

Very enjoyable game. I might have rated it higher than I would have once I see some games that I almost certainly forgot to put on. But a fun game for sure.

Never played RC Pro Am. As someone who played most NES games retroactively, it was just a racing game on the surface to me, so I never gave it the time of day.

I loved creating courses on Excitebike when I was younger. Nothing better than creating and then blazing through your course.

I have World Rally on my Wii and played the hell out of that for a solid few months.

    Tetris

I do assume it's this version and not the Tengen unlicensed version.

    Year- 1989
    Publisher- Nintendo
    Developer- Nintendo

Fun Fact- Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov didn't earn royalties on Tetris until 1996. The Russian state reverted rights back to Alexey. He and Henk Rogers then set up The Tetris Company, which still owns the rights to Tetris.

Though I have not contributed here, I am enjoying the work from the peanut gallery. Will be there for SNES as you know.

Tetris seems to have got a bit of a bad break here due to voting discrepancy as got a couple of high-placed votes out the three, just not enough votes. Loveable in any version.

Hopefully there are more like you Badger that are watching and enjoying from a distance.

Super NES Countdown is going to be great! It might be my all time favorite system.

Tetris got a rough break. A couple more votes and it could have hit top ten.

I mostly played Tetris for Gameboy although the NES version is just as fun but is why I didn't vote for it here.

Only ever played excitebike at a friends.

Tetris only got a low rating for me because this is the NES poll. For me it was much more a gameboy game.

I forgot about RC. Don't know if it would have made my top 20. But it was great.

Agreed on Tetris, more a Gameboy legend game and it's arguably only here for its name. I'm slightly concerned I haven't voted for any of these, which means some of my incredible Top 20 won't be in this.

I think I did vote for Tetris, but as Rosk says more of a Gameboy game. I did play this a decent amount on the NES too though.

Definitely didn't vote for Tetris because I, too, see it as more of a Gameboy game. Still a classic, though.
