    Music Chat Thread

The music discussion is pretty much dead so this is a catch-all thread for music discussion. Is there something new coming out that you're interested in? A review you want to post? Or a music discussion/debate you want to have but don't want to make a thread?

    Post it here.

Question for the rest of the class: Are Guns 'N Roses a "hair metal band"? I've got a buddy of mine who says "yes" they are. Because they're a rock band from the 80's, from L.A. and they got famous on "The Strip".

I say no, just because they got famous in L.A. and happen to be a combination of members from two other hair bands, it doesn't make them a hair band. They didn't dress like women, wear makeup, or tease their hair. And unlike a lot of other hair bands, they actually seemed to have some balls. They had an edge that shit bands like Winger and Cinderella couldn't manage. They were just four, authentic tough guys making bad ass metal music.

    So, who's right?

Good question Spudz. I am far from an expert on the parameters of a hair metal band, nor the Gunz N Roses discography, but my uninformed self would say yes they are a hair band. I mean they had big long hair. Is that the definition? No? Shit.

They’re hair metal, they’re not glam metal like Poison or the Crue.

Random Thought -- I've seen a few local bands in my time cover A Perfect Circle's "Judith".

Nobody knows how to start it properly. Almost nobody has the balls to scream "FUCK YOUR GOD!!!" in a tiny bar or bowling alley. And that triple-hitter drum part that transitions into the main body of the song? Every drummer I've seen try it, seems to blow it somehow.

Man I’d love to see a local band cover APC. “Pet” might not get a lot of love in a bar setting but it would be a great song to hear someone try to cover.

In terms of mainstream audience, "Judith" and "The Outsider" are probably it as far as APC covers you're likely to hear. Maybe their version of "Imagine". But that just sounds a lot like the real deal.

Here is a list that made the rounds on the internet lately because Drake passed Madonna. Artists with the most top 10 hits in Hot 100 history:

    Drake 40
    Madonna 38
    Beatles 34
    Rihanna 31
    Michael Jackson 30
    Mariah Carey 28
    Stevie Wonder 28
    Elton John 27
    Janet Jackson 27
    Elvis Presley 25
    Lil Wayne 25
    Taylor Swift 25
    Whitney Houston 23
    Paul McCartney 23
    Rolling Stones 23
    Eminem 22

An interesting list when we think about the biggest pop stars of all time. A few things I glean from this list:

    1. Hip hop has become the most popular type of music currently, to its own detriment in my opinion but that's a separate topic.
    2. It's also very collaborative so Drake being #1 is in part due to his many features on other lead artists' songs. That is probably the same for Rihanna.
    3. Drake is extremely talented, you must give him his props at this point
    4. Paul McCartney having 23 on here in addition to his 34 with the Beatles is very impressive. I didn't know he had so many hits post-Beatles.

This has been an awful time for official music releases. I might be able to come up with a list of 10.

I dont consider GNR metal at all. Let alone hair metal. I'm not even sure why people would even consider that an option.

Welcome to Hard Times by Charley Crockett is really good. I like what he's done in the past; he's always been comparable to Johnny Cash, which makes him a part of a really small group of talented singers, but he sounds like he's writing for Bobby Bare on this set of tunes. He's finally dealing out Rhythm & Blues and Country & Western in equal doses and this is his first album that has classic status on it from start to finish.
It may require multiple listens if you're not used to this stuff, but I give my 5 star stamp of approval to this one.

They're just straight up hard Rock, they just happen to have long hair.

If that's the criteria for being called a hair metal band then that's pretty much every band from the 80s. Oh and Pearl Jam and Sound garden and Alice In Chains and Nirvana too.

Does anyone have a last.fm account. I'd be really interested to look at your charts.

Apparently I haven't had last.fm set for Spotify for the last 2 years so that's fun.

I also have no plans for another premium subscription, oh well.

I listen to the Mind Right playlist on Spotify a lot and find new artists through that.
