Best Movies of the 90s: A Rajah Ranking

I was thinking of doing another list/ranking type thing and my idea for a simple one would be best movies by decade. I thought of starting with the 70s and working forward but 90s is probably a more interesting starting point and if participation is solid we can move onto another decade. I will split these by drama and comedy. For movies that are "dramedies" just ask if you want a ruling.

    Dramedy rulings:
    Forrest Gump - Drama
    The Truman Show - Drama
    The Lion King - Drama
    Con Air - Drama
    Edward Scossorhands - Drama

    Toy Story - Comedy
    The Big Lebowski - Comedy
    The Cable Guy - Comedy
    Dazed and Confused - Comedy
A League of their Own - Comedy

You can submit up to 20 for each category, but feel free to submit fewer if you can't get that far.

Here is a list I found which could help you get started, and surely many other online lists are out there.

What’s your reasoning for putting it in the drama category? I’m open to opposing views on it

It's both drama and comedy. I'd probably include it on both lists to be fair, if it was in my top 20 movies list.

I haven’t see that movie since I was a kid so I don’t know but I would guess yes, drama.

I've never once in my life heard anyone ever call Forrest Gump a comedy so I'm with you. The comedy is very subtle, tongue in cheek at times. If Forrest Gump is a comedy by any stretch then so is Evil Dead II.

Forrest Gump is shit and shouldn't be on any list unless it’s worst movies of the 90s.

Any thoughts about just adding an Action/Sci-Fi category?

Most of those will end up under DRAMA but having Schindler's List and Jurassic Park in the same category seems like forcing something.

And just to be clear: We are calling "The 90s" 1990 to 1999, correct?

I would prefer 1 to 2 as well. I would just prefer 3 to 2 if we are going to start dividing them up.

I think it's safe to say when comparing the single category threads to the mega 40 category thread that people are more inclined to participate and be involved with less categories. Not sure who tried the mega thread, but to me that felt like someone going "I'll just make a thread about 40 categories so that other guy doing the single ones can't do them anymore" Probably a shithead only child. Hopefully they get a brother in the next life.

I'm talking about the "best tv shows of all time" thread poor The Beer Monster tried to get going and it just didn't hit. Dude never even came through with the lists.

Few suprises other than that, personally I would like to have seen Deadwood crack the top 10 and I still need to finish watching Chernobyl.
Ive never seen Mr Robot, but it sounds like it should have been on a different list perhaps, but then again I'm not sure how sci-fi it is Im just going by the name.
The Wire took me 3 separate attempts to get in to it, but I really didnt regret it when I did, and its something I will re-watch at some point down the line.
Band of Brothers is funny to watch again now and see all the actors youd never heard of pop up who are now all sorts of famous.

Fairly even spilt between US and UK shows especially if you consider I'm Alan Partridge missed the top 10 by a single point.
I'll always have time for Only Fools and Horses, would of liked to have seen that slightly higher up the list and the US version beating the UK version of The Office didn't come as a surprise, but ill always prefer the original, with the second part of the Christmas special being a particular favourite.

No surprises at number 1 and 2.
Good to see DS9 on any list. But I actually wouldn't mind seeing a DS9 remake as it hasn't aged well in a lot of areas and they could get straight in to the Dominion stuff rather than fannying about for a couple of seasons.
Babylon 5 is a load of shit.
I wonder where Firefly would have been if it had gotten a full run.
At the other end of the list Watchmen propped things up, I imagine that being a lot higher down the line if it gets a few more seasons.

Too many grown up cartoons in this list really, The Cartoon vote was split between here and the kids programmes though, so belters like Animals of Farthing Wood will appear there in case you are worried.
The Simpsons really? I cant remember the last time I watched it, maybe it was the constant repeats we got that killed it for me, but hasn't it just gone on way too long?
I think deep down we all know that Tom and Jerry is actually the best.
Was disappointed The Raccoons just missed out on the the top ten and Danger Mouse has been criminally underrated here.

Knightmare was my all time favourite after school show, I imagine it hasn't aged well though. It was bastard hard for kids I think I only remember maybe 4 teams ever getting to the end.
BBC/ITV after school stuff was immense. Do they even make shows like that any more? What do kids even watch now?
The A-Team is still amazing, that then Knightrider, then Baywatch then Gladiators, that's a Saturday afternoon/evening absolutely sorted.
I imagine kids shows being very important for parents right now. Question for parents, would they watch old (good) stuff or would they think it was shit?

Very few lists submitted for this, which was disappointing as to me this was the category that really showed the depth of what television is beyond dramas and sitcoms.
No surprise with number 1, obviously not a favourite, but easily the biggest news event in most of our lives, I expect we all remember seeing the coverage and where we were and who we were with.
No written drama will ever be as epic as a truly great sporting moment. Beckham's free kick against Greece, massively underrated here.
I watched every single game of France 98, great tournament from start to Finnish.
And there is also some gigs on there, so that's a thing.

Less categories is definitely good. I like the separation of comedy and drama because I feel like there are a lot of good comedies that would get left out. Any categories beyond that is overkill.

I can see the case for putting them all together with no qualifiers but I like giving comedies their shine too.

    What are you on about?
But like Pabs showed, yes I did finish it.

But you clearly missed the point of the thread. It was to find the best tv of all time and not just get people saying Breaking Bad and Sopranos as there is quite a lot more to tv than that.

2 things. I realized after I posted that you did finish it. All Pabs had to do was simply say "Yes he did" and then I would have looked lol.

I didn't miss the point of the thread. It was very ambitious but felt odd that the single themed threads were doing so well then you just swooped in and decided to take care of the rest. And then nobody cared.

I'm getting a few more drama lists than comedy, which is okay since my plan is to reveal the drama results first and then give people another week or more to get comedy lists in. So if you want to focus on one first, go with drama.

I have 10 lists in, thank you to those who submitted. I’ve already tallied them but we could really use a few submissions to bulk out the list.

I'd like to contribute but I was born in 1990 and didn't really watch many dramas with my family growing up so there's a ton of movies that I know are classics I've never seen.

I am confident I can come up with 20 comedies though.

Also just a clarifying point for everyone. Drama doesn’t mean it has to be a pure drama like Goodwill Hunting. Action and sci fi count in the drama categories. So Independence Day, T2 .... these could be at the top of your list if they are among your favorite 90s movies. Don’t let the drama vs comedy split put you off from including action movies or any other genre. Comedy and non-comedy would be another way to put it.

Good shit... with Bert and Donald's list I feel better about revealing the top 20 (every film in the top 20 has at least 3 votes).

Still could use more though. I'll leave it open for a few more days since I sent some PMs to people asking for lists.

Reminder: submitting a top 10 list is totally fine. 20 is the maximum but if you want to submit fewer, that's great.

I'm fuckin trashed right now. I took like 120 milligrams of Vistaril, 20 milligrams of flexeril, and 2 milligrams of klonopin, so I'll be too lit to even try and make a list tonight.

Last call for best NON-COMEDIC movies of the 90s. Once @Chris sends his in I'm ready to start the countdown.

Best comedies of the 90s will go next so figure there will be 3 more weeks to get those lists in.

Countdown starts this evening. Last last chance for people to submit lists for the non-comedy category.

I have about 10 lists for comedies. I’ll shoot some PMs out to people this weekend to rally the troops. So far it’s shaping up nicely. Lot of good 90s comedies let me tell ya

But I’m revealing the dramas about one per day so that gives you an idea of when comedy countdown will start

I've got about 3-4 comments in there to this point. Big fan.

With 9 votes tallied, I'm surprised at which movie is currently sitting on top as Rajah's favorite 90s comedy
