    AEW Double or Nothing (2020)

This show is Saturday. Here is the card:

    Shawn Spears versus Dustin Rhodes
Private Party versus Best Friends - No. 1 Contenders Match for the tag titles
MJF (with Wardlow) versus Jungle Boy
Nyla Rose (c) versus Hikaru Shida - Women's Title Match
    Penelope Ford versus Kris Statlander
Cody versus Lance Archer - Finals of the TNT Championship tournament
Darby Allin versus Colt Cabana versus Orange Cassidy versus Joey Janela versus Scorpio Sky versus Kip Sabian versus Frankie Kazarian versus Luchasaurus versus TBD - Casino Ladder Match for a future AEW World Championship match
Jon Moxley (c) versus Brodie Lee - AEW Title Match
Matt Hardy and The Elite (Adam Page, Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) versus The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Sammy Guevara, Santana and Ortiz) - Stadium Stampede match

    Some questions -
Do they hot potato the women's title?
It's possible if Nyla is unable to travel much outside of this window they have.

Who is the mystery entrant for the ladder match?
Could be an underwhelming mystery reveal or a new addition. Sky or TBD are my top choices for winning.

Will the stadium stampede match be AEW's entry into the cinematic match realm?
Hardy's inclusion opens up the possibility of that.

Orange Cassidy with hands in pockets off the ladder is a given.

I'm gonna guess Zack Ryder for the mystery man, or Rusev?

I wonder if they'll give Cody the title. Since he can't win the world title (that is until he turns heel and goes back on his word), the TNT title makes sense for him to have. But they also just debuted Lance Archer recently, does it make sense for him to lose his first major feud?

Interesting to see Brodie Lee in the main event so quickly. Never saw him as a main eventer, I expect him to lose and give Dean a lenghty run.

I don't imagine the Casino In The Bank match is going to feature any former WWE talent. Everybody who got spring cleaned out probably has a 90-day, no-compete.

Maybe the NXT releases, don't think they had 90 day no compete. Does Lio Rush include in that? Also, you have the Revoltal.

wouldn't be surprised to see the mystery entrant turn out to be brian cage. recovery time from his bicep surgery should be just about up, and if that news of him signing with AEW was true back in january, then this would be a good spot to debut him as the clear power guy in a ladder match filled with flyers.

Gulak would qualify for being able to participate.

The ladder match is Darby's match to win.

I don't see Moxley dropping the title right now, especially to Brodie Lee. Too soon for Lee and the character/stable still isn't resonating for me and many others. I don't know how well it'd be accepted by a live crowd but if we're the live crowd, yeah....I don't know. Hard to accept the last couple defenses. Swagger, now Lee. It just feels lazy. Even now.

Moxley v. Lee has potential if it was given more than a couple weeks. 6 months down the road and they threw down with the stable and Lee being more established I could see Lee winning, it would make sense to have this dude as champion with that storyline they're going with. But it's too soon for Mox to drop it.

Very curious to see this Stadium Stampede match. Hardy and Jericho are 2 of the most creative minds in the business and the other guys aren't exactly lackluster. Well, Page is a little bit of a jabroni but I digress...

lol. Hard to differentiate the troll or the poster in this comment.

In all seriousness, he does have a fanbase of sorts and people see potential. I put him in the Adam Cole category of wrestlers I just can't wrap my head around the idea that they're quality talent that belongs in the spot they're in.

he has definitely been one of their most interesting characters, i miss him.

rough to compare him to cole. cole doesn't have a character besides just being adam cole.

He got over very organically (it was being forced in some ways but it was still a fresh story) and then they were showing signs of shifting course with a potential narrative with him. It'll be interesting to see how it goes with him back in the mix.

that's not really true, it's an aspect of his character. they were giving him character and a good storyline with him and the elite.

weird you wouldn't notice that, since you make the most posts, by far, when dynamite is on. maybe too busy thinking of jokes that continually fall flat

Yeah, they kind of were starting to give him a bit of a personality. I guess "alcoholic who's sick of everybody's shit" works as a personality. But when they pussied out on turning him heel, they sort of left whatever character plans they had for him flapping in the wind.

And then when he and The Bucks disappeared into the Phantom Zone during the beginning of the Planedmic we have going on now, it killed all the momentum he had. Now that he's back, it seems like they're trying to restart what they had going before.

i don't see how they 'pussied out' at all. they gave him a conflicted character who isn't sure what his next move it. not turning him right away was one of the smartest things they have done.

please keep your stupid political shit out of a wrestling thread, no one gives a fuck.

I actually agree. By the time Hangman and Omega had that killer match with The Young Bucks, it was too late to turn him. It wouldn't make a ton of sense going wire to wire for like 40 minutes with a guy, working your ass off to win a match, and then turning on him.

But they're still doing it. If Hangman in kayfabe (and real life) decided to leave his wife and his newborn baby at home during a global crisis to come help these idiots, he shouldn't have stormed out after making the save. Its time to piss or get off the pot. Its too late to pay off that old heel turn and its too early to start teasing new tensions.

Apropos of nothing -- The Mystery Man in the ladder match is going to be *drum roll* Jeff Cobb.

He showed up once, got beat by Moxley in a bullshit finish, and if they can get him again, now's the time to do it. He comes in and wins a World Title match for the Inner Circle, which Jericho buys from him.

they aren't teasing new tensions. the old ones never ended. just got a bit interrupted with the virus and such.

quite a backtrack from saying he just is like adam cole with beer, anyway. not surprised.

Eh, at this point I'm more engaged with the Inner Circle/Elite feud than I am anything to do with Adam Page. He's just part of it.

I'd like to see a Matt Hardy/Adam Page feud come out of this whole thing, over who gets to be Kenny Omega's tag-team partner.

    Well no shit.

I'm just hoping they can really build him back up sooner rather than later. That's why I suggested the Matt Hardy feud.

After the Footbrawl match or whatever they're calling it, that'd be a perfect way to get Page back into the swing of things.

    Quite pumped for this show.

Won't be watching live though, as my boy is fully AEW now.

    So Sunday morning for us.

Most looking forward to the stadium match, the ladder match and Cody/Archer.

Mox and Lee could be great, but I agree that it feels a bit rushed.

Not sure whether to expect much from this show overall given the circumstances but I am excited for STADIUM STAMPEDE which should be a blast.

Hardy's inclusion opens up the possibility of that.

Shida being ranked #1 for so long, only to lose, would be bad for her, I think. But you don't want to take it off Nyla either. That seems like something you want to wait for a crowd to do. I suspect they'll have shenanigans with Brit Baker, to keep her and Shida busy in a blood feud.

They've played up the fact that MJF doesn't lose (one on one at least) so while Jungle Boy could use a boost from being a rare defeat for MJF, I think they ride this for a bit longer. The longer he goes undefeated, the more of an smarmy ass he becomes. Eventually leading to the TNT title contention.

Which brings us to Cody and Archer. As others have said, Archer just debuted, so you don't want him to lose. But Cody can't keep losing big matches, either. I think they can have Cody win, but gets beat down almost immediately after. Dustin comes out and it looks like he's going to help Cody, but he turns his back on him. Brandi gets harrassed again, also. Then you can have Archer and Cody continue on tv and not immediately move on to a new challenger.

Darby needs to win the Casino ladder match. I think he needs it more to stay over than any other. His "it" factor still needs something to put him over the top, and this thing with Taz bringing up how he keeps making mistakes would grate on my nerves sooner rather than later. But that's just me. Please don't go the WWE route and think losing streaks makes you endearing. But, the folks that run AEW are genre-savvy, so I actually have high hopes. Maybe too high.

Dark Order should be the ones going for the #1 contender's match for the tag titles instead of putting Brodie in the main title feud. But I understand why they did it. But, it also takes some of the appeal away because you know more than likely Moxley will win. I'd be shocked, SHOCKED, if it went the other way, even with shennanigans.

Stadium Stampede, if it is anything like that parking lot brawl from a few weeks ago, should be outstanding. In this regard, I really don't know how they will go. Pretty exciting. I don't know what the numbers are, but when they're split, the Inner Circle seems to lose. They win or get the one up when they're all together. The reverse of the Elite. I tend to root for faces (unless the story makes me go the other way, despite what I'm supposed to do), so I would want the Elite to pull this one out.

There might be some changes to the card on Sunday. Britt could be out with a knee injury. Fenix and Matt Jackson got banged up as well, but as of now are still expected to compete.

I'm excited for the stadium stampede match and the casino ladder match. We should see some crazy shit during those matches.

I'm not too interested in Mox vs Brodie. I don't know what it is, but i really don't care for it... maybe because there wasn't much build? I do expect Mox to win though. I can't see him dropping the belt to anyone anytime soon.

Yeah the only 2 matches I give a shit about are the 10-man tag and the Ladder match. Everything else, meh, I'm sure it'll be decent stuff but nothing I'm jumping through fire to see. Mox v. Lee, the women's title, the TNT title-the only interest I even have in that is seeing Iron Mike possibly knock both these dorks the fuck out.

I heard Britt torn her acl. Can anyone confirm that this is true?
If so, that completely sucks! I feel like she was gaining a lot of momentum the last couple months. Going to suck not having basically the best talker on the mic in the women's divison

Alvarez was presuming that's what she suffered. No one has confirmed that. If she suffered that injury, she's out at least nine months.

Most looking forward to the stadium match, the ladder match and Cody/Archer.

Mox and Lee could be great, but I agree that it feels a bit rushed.

Damn... that is not good. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Joey Janela is filling in for Fenix in the ladder match. To be honest, i thought he would have been added right from the start. Sad not to see Fenix though.

Injury plague or what? Never rains but it pours.

Especially gutted about Britt though, favourite character next to Jericho. Maybe they could do some RNN-like stuff vignettes with her and provide injury updates.

Its interesting that so far, the two biggest main event angles involving Jon Moxley in AEW have just been reheated and rehashed old WWE feuds.

First it was Moxley/Jericho -- but their "eye for an eye" thing was a lot more compelling than whatever an "Ambrose Asylum Match" is.

Now we've got Mox/Brodie Lee - Remember, last time these two had a singles match on pay-per-view it was some kind of falls count anywhere thing where they kicked off the show, fought outside, disappeared, and then showed up -- still fighting -- for the finish of their match by the end of the show. Its nice to see they're trying to do things a little more seriously this time, but I can't take Brodie Lee seriously as a threat. The Dark Order thing just kills him. He makes a good cult leader, but he needs a better cult.

    Prediction Time ---

    The Buy In -

    - Best Friends vs. Private Party -- Best Friends -- As much as I hate that hatchet faced smuck Chuck Taylor, they're the team with the equity behind them recently and the they've been on all the no-audience shows. How are Private Party anywhere near contention when they've been gone in the AEW Phantom Zone for like 3 months?

    Double Or Nothing -

    - Casino In The Bank Ladder Match -- Mystery Man -- I'm calling Jeff Cobb's return to AEW tonight. He comes in and becomes number 1 contender to Mox's title.

    - Shawn Spears vs. Dustin Rhodes -- Dustin Rhodes -- He barely sneaks one out, and then Spears hits him in the head with a chair.

    - MJF vs. Jungle Boy -- MJF -- MJF needs the win to keep building him up to his next major feud. Jungle Jack Boy Perry Jack Jungle Boy Jack is a tag-team guy, so him losing won't hurt him.

    - Penelope Ford vs. Kris Statlander -- Kris Statlander -- The Doctor is out, so insert Ford to do the job.

    - Hikaru Shida vs. Nyla Rose -- Hikaru Shida -- AEW loves its Japanese school girls. At least Shida is bigger than a middle-school kid.

    - Cody Rhodes vs. Lance Archer -- Lance Archer -- Jake threatens to DDT Brandi on the floor unless Cody forfeits the match, allowing Archer to win. Jake DDT's her anyway.

    - Jon Moxley vs. Brodie Lee -- Jon Moxley -- Sorry, sorry... Mister Brodie Lee is a filler challenger at best. Mox is in it for the long-haul as champion.

    - Stadium Stampede Match -- The Elite -- The Inner Circle have been up more than The Elite on TV, so its probably time to give the babyface group a big win.

That was rough. I never thought I'd say it, but Chuck Taylor held that match together. Trent? got knocked loopy early on and Private Party were barely holding it together.

I like them explaining how the ladder still moves when in the ring. I was just on a ladder the other day to replace a lightbulb and shit is terrifying.
Edit: so that's the angle they were going with with Taz, eh? Not...a bad idea.

Well that sounded like it hurt.
Welp. I guess they really are going with the "Darby just can't get it done" angle with him. And down the road, Cage vs Moxley (or Brodie) coming up. Not...bad?
Cage looks like he got a mosquito bite on his eyelid. I hate when that happens.

If Vickie Guerrero were still in the wrestling business, MJF is the kind of guy she'd pair up really well with. Her as the cougar, with all her Eddie Guerrero money, and MJF using her to make himself even more rich. But she's using him to get rich, too.

Damn that piledriver. And the sequence leading up to it was good. You never see a guy let go of a submission because they're the one that's hurt.
Someone said "YOU GOT KNOCKED, THE HELL OUT!"

Well, that was pretty good. Rather unique.

If the World Title is the biggest title in the company, then it makes sense for the second biggest singles title in the company to be silver. For second place.

I know, logically, but I always see that as a failing. WWE's tag belts for example. The IC and US titles we know are the "secondaries", but they're still gold. I like that they refer to the AEW Heavyweight title as "Big Platnium", but still looks gold. What can I say, the aesthetics are a factor for me.

And Big Swole seems to have a big problem with Lance. I wonder what that's about

Also, an ill timed shot of Tyson yawning. But I find it amusing.
Cody's been man handled through most of this thing, so does that mean he wins? But it's been nice and brutal so far.

When you're as tall as a Archer is, you really need to tuck your head on a move like that reverse-suplex. That could have decapitated him if he'd left his head out any straighter.

Those injuries sound bad. But since they're going with it as an angle also, and she can hobble out there on Dynamite, I guess that means it's not "too" terrible. But more Penelope on tv is not a terrible thing, either.

The smarter thing to do would have been debuting a new girl as Britt Baker's "dental assistant" who Britt's forcing to wrestle in her place. That way, they could let Britt Baker shoot vignettes from home or from her dental office, to keep her "alive" on TV. Her "dental assistant" gets over on TV, has a good run, has a winning streak, and then Britt Baker has a ready made feud when she's healthy enough to come back to TV.

Penelope Ford needs to stop using that top-rope head-scissors. She fucks that up more often than not.

When your finish involves trapping your opponent's legs and dropping them on their head, you need to take more time to set it up than Statlander does. She's going to cripple somebody if she's always in that much of a hurry to get it on.

That's how you do comedy in wrestling right. Asshole heel gets stripped down to his underpants, has to show his ass, has embarrassing underpants, and gets beat.

That entire segment felt like it was booked by Jim Cornette.

Rose/Shida is a dark horse candidate for being one of the better matches of the whole night tonight.

The no-disqualification style is going to really help these two.

Terrible what happened to her. It's easy to say don't let twitter and shit get you down, but damn if it doesn't affect more people than it should.

If Shida spoke better English, she'd be one of the biggest female stars in wrestling right now.

The language barrier is always going to be a problem for American audiences, though.

Aight, Shida, no DQ. Forget the kendo stick. Get some brass knucks and knock her teeth out.

Hikaru Shida, showing the entire viewing audience several dozen ways to knee someone in the head.

I really thought they'd wait until there was a crowd to upset the Beast. I ain't mad, though.

That was a great match. I'll admit, when AEW first started, Nyla Rose struck me as being over-hyped. She was sloppy and didn't seem to really "get it". And the transgender thing made her seem a bit like a novelty act. But that was damn good performance against Shida.

Both these girls have a Hell of an upside.

Man, these guys go so far out of their way to not mention WWE.

Trying to talk about Moxley and Brodie Lee sharing a locker room, but not mentioning where they had their most famous matches.

I live about an hour from Rochester, NY.

Brodie Lee is the best thing to come out of Rochester that's not a garbage plate.

Dasha Gonzales looks a lot better in that dress than Justin Roberts would.

Brodie Lee has new tights tonight.

They're not great, but they're not worse.

Kind of a lateral move, really.

Did Mox do time in the service? He's got military chevrons on his pants.

I guess we can infer that WWE is also "one of the independents"

No matter what variation, or how many times I see one, a piledriver looks like it should knock yo ass out every time.
Also, Big Swole got a bunch of energy tonight. She better have a match on Wednesday to burn some of it off. Give that lady a raise.
They're putting the gloves on which means BLOOD!
And Moxley getting fast and vicious is great.

Dude, totally was not expecting the Bam-Bam/Taz "go through the stage" finish.

Nice. For a filler feud match, that was super damn fun.

Maybe a little too early to beat Brodie Lee clean, but oh well. He's got the referee stoppage "out".

Hell, Moxley went hold-for-hold with an actual MMA guy last month. Choking out a guy who just took a DDT through the stage shouldn't be that surprising.
