An argument could be made for almost every TV show ever made.

    Shows that definitely didn't:

    The Office
    Extras
    I'm Alan Partridge
    Father Ted
    Breaking Bad

Fools and Horses (kill it after they get rich)

Friday Night Dinner (last series was dog shit, emd it at the end of the previous series when Jim's dog dies)

Have I Got News For You (not only did it go from essential viewing under Deayton, to watchable silliness in the early years of the guest hosts, to utterly toothless and redundant by about 2005, it also played a direct role in allowing cunts like Johnson, Farage and Rees-Mogg to reinvent themselves as charismatic, even charming oddballs. If HIGNFY had died with Deayton, this country would almost certainly not be in as awful a position as it is right now)

Gavin and Stacey (last year's Christmas episode was shit)

Teachers (last series was so bad)

Red Dwarf (first three series were miles better than everything else, the next three series were still decent. Definitely shouldn't have gone beyond series six IMO, although I'm told the more recent episodes have been an improvement on the really bad stuff from a few years ago)

    Fawlty Towers
    15 Storeys High
    Bottom
Mr. Bean (the series, not the movies which even then are decent)
    Phoneshop
    The Thick Of It
Men Behaving Badly (strangely it's actually the first series of this that is quite shit, and everything after that is fantastic)
The Inbetweeners (again, not including the movies)

I would argue The Wire didn't go on too long either - the final series isn't as good as the rest, but it's still better than anything else on TV and has a fantastic ending that neatly ties up the entire show.

    Forgot The Thick of It.

Third series of the Inbetweeners is pretty shite IMO, even the second is a noticeable drop in quality.

when i watched through it the first time i agreed with the common opinion that the last season was a step down, but when i rewatched it all a couple years ago i thought the last season was one of the best.

Little Britain went on too long.

Blackadder was spot on with 4 series though.

for series that went the perfect amount of time, sopranos was remarkably perfect in the period of time it ran. it truly covered an entire discrete era of american history, starting in early 1999 (the real beginning of the dotcom bubble), covering the entire bush era, and ending in 2007 when the great recession started. if it had one more season it would have been in spring 2008 at the earliest, a whole different world.

Supernatural. You can only do so many variations of "threat comes out of a new pit of hell, and a darker family secret threatens to tear the brothers apart before you're just copying yourself. They had to stretch things out about as thin as you can possibly stretch them to keep this premise going through season six. Then they did how many more seasons? They really should've called it quits with season five.

the last two season of 'The Office' were pretty bad. The show should have ended with Michael leaving.

Duh. My American genes peaked though; forgot where I was. Literally everything else was UK-based. You are correct that the real 'The Office' ended perfectly.

    24.

Was amazing the first few years but then they just repeated themselves and it was shite by series 6. They should have changed the locations earlier but it was too later by the time they did that.

Just looking at shows I like because it's real easy to say "yes" for shows I don't like...

Lost is one of my favourite shows ever, but could have comfortably been a season shorter.

The Office (US) went on about 3 seasons too long. Same with How I Met Your Mother.

Seinfeld went real close to outstaying it's welcome. Wrapping that up one season earlier wouldn't have hurt much.

Simpsons is a given, but the fact it's still going keeps the old episodes fresh in our minds. If they called it a day in 2003 or whenever you think it should have, I don't reckon we'd still be seeing shitloads of memes and references everywhere.

I adore Frasier and it has some classic episodes in the latter seasons, but it could have ended far sooner. Season 7 with Niles and Daphne running away would have been a good ending if they had built it up a little differently. Too many shows give up the “will they, won’t they” dynamic with a couple and then don’t know what to do with them once they’re together. And with Frasier, some of his partners in the later seasons were dreadful.

Star Trek TNG was always watchable up until the end, but the final season has some atrocious episodes. The writers became obsessed with the family theme for every character and seemed to run out of ideas completely.

There’s some shows at the moment that have outstayed their welcome. Killing Eve season 3 has been garbage compared to the heights of season 1. Jodie Comer’s performance remains excellent, but the character has lost all of her edge since teaming up with Eve. I don’t buy her wanting a promotion or caring about her family. Eve is a chore to watch and we’ve seen so much of them together that their confrontations don’t have the same electricity, All of the supporting cast are floundering and nowhere near as interesting as they used to be. Killing Eve could have been one-and-done. Same goes for Westworld. Season 2 had some excellent moments but bloody hell it was needlessly complicated, I wasn’t that enamoured with season 3 but would have been happy enough if this was the end. But we have at least one more season to go.

Too many shows are being squeezed for every drop, when it’s better to go out on a high (though obviously that makes less money). The BBC are now thinking of a second series of Normal People, which is easily one of my favourite shows of the year. Superbly written and beautifully acted. I found the ending satisfying if bittersweet and a second season would completely undermine it. Similar to ITV’s Liar. Brilliant first season, but ludicrous and boring second season which actually harms the first in terms of altering the overall story and characters.

Dexter was the first one that jumped out in my head. The first 4-5 seasons it's an all time great show and by the end it was basically unwatchable.

I saw someone said Red Dwarf earlier. Totally agree that post series 6 was terrible, especially when they removed Rimmer who was by far the best thing on the show.

I actually think series 3 to 6 was the peak.

Supernatural: Its not even the stupid scaling so much as it is they had their lore worked out so well that they had to step on their dicks constantly after S5 and a few aftert hat are good.

The Walking Dead: In fairness they tried too much to keep with the comics without keeping with the comics. STill not a bad show.

Bones: This is a fun one but it screws itself anytime they try to tell an actual story instead of just being episodic.

I loved Dexter. I was going to mention S3 as my favorite (S1 is pretty close though). That cliff hanger really punched me in my stomach. Lithgow was beyond perfect in this role.

I think they tried in later seasons but it just didn't click like it could and should have. I do wonder on rewatches if Dexter is still being a lumberjack or if he had to move on again. If the story was right, I wouldn't mind like a 2 hour episode special that catches us up on what Dexter is doing.

I think it has turned to shit to be honest. There were so many times where they could have just ended it or gone in a more interesting direction.

Series 1-4 were really really good. By the time it got to series 7 it was just so so bad.

Fuck WWE, Donald. AEW AEW AEW!

From reading in here, I've not made a good decision starting Killing Eve the other day then! Series 3, I mean. I heard reviews had been bad and I found episode 1 quite hard going and slow. And there are 8 eps.

I was also going to start Liar series 2 tonight, but no so sure now.

I didn't think the second series of Bancroft was anywhere near as good as the first, but it was still a good enough watch.

The Walking Dead has a ton of crap they could've cut from the show, especially starting in season 7 after the Glenn and Abe killings. That said, the show is still pretty solid and there are some great story lines happening in season 10. They just had SO MUCH filler starting around season 6 and going into season 9. Season 10 has had a lot less filler.

I think.series 2 is the best personally, but there are fantastic episodes up to series 6 like Timeslides, Bodyswap, Gunmen of the Apocalypse, Quarantine etc.

You could argue 24, but I did really like the last 12 episode London mini-series.

Really struggling with season 4 of Homeland. Then I saw the other day that it's up to season 8. Might finish 4 and leave it there.

Homeland should have stopped after Series 3. It does however get better again and I enjoyed Series 5 and 8 in particular.

Yeah, even though it was a little disjointed, I really quite enjoyed season 3. Could have ended after season 1 or 3. I've heard elsewhere too that it gets better again though, so I might just get 4 done and come back to 5 down the road.

Or I might go back and watch the brilliant season 1, with Mrs M this time.

The Newsroom. First season was fantastic, seasons 2-3 were not very good.
