    Wrestlemania 36

We're pretty much heading towards that after we get through Super Showdown. Sure there's Elimination Chamber but that presumably helps set the table for Mania.

Reports are circulating that the match is tentatively set at 14 matches. If that's the case, let's look at the numbers and what is reportedly known.
They traditionally want to get (mostly) everyone on the show so there will be two battle royals. All of the titles should be defended. The CW title is now exclusively to NXT so that's taken out of the mix, but the NXT women's championship has been included this year due to Flair challenging Ripley.

    Fourteen matches is the framework.
    1. Men's Battle Royal
    2. Women's Battle Royal
    3. Lesnar versus McIntyre
    4. Ripley versus Flair
    5. Presumably Lynch versus Baszler
    6.
    7. Universal Title Match
    8. Presumably Orton versus Edge
    9. IC Title Match (if you've forgotten - Strowman)
    10. US Title Match (if you've forgotten - Andrade)
    11. Raw Tag Title Match
    12. Smackdown Tag Title Match
    13. SD Women's Title Match
    14. Women's Tag Title Match

We're likely getting Rollins versus Owens here, especially now with Joe out of the mix due to his suspension. If he wasn't suspended, we probably could have had the door open for the Raw tag titles to be defended there.

Reigns and The Fiend could be the direction for the Universal Title but Super Showdown could change course of things. Cena is likely to be involved with his appearance on Smackdown. Bryan is the most notable person that doesn't have a direction.

Thoughts? Not sure how they're planning to make it work if 14 is the goal.

Fuck, this is going to be a slog to sit through.

I wish we could have Lynch vs. Asuka for the belt though, w/ Asuka standing tall and ending Lynch's reign.

Goddamn WWE has way too many titles.

3 on the pre-show, 11 on themain show?

Also I assume there's going to be a musical act or two during the main show.

    Also Cena segment or match.

I just wish it didn't last forever these shows. Fuck me, 7 and a half straight hours of wrestling, after 2 hours Friday and 3 on Saturday. It's absurd. They need to start utilizing the "Wrestlemania Weekend" and have 2/3 each of the matches on the Smackdown before and Raw after as big time promoted matches. Do Andrade, Garza etc deserve to be on the big show? Of course. But it's not conducive of a good show anymore. Keep the battle royals for a 1 hour pre-show and chuck the guys "relegated" to the TV match so they get their payoff.

Smackdown would be the US title and women's title, Raw would get the tag (presuming Rollins/Murphy lose them before), US and women's tag. Then 'Mania would have Brock/Drew, Wyatt/Reigns, Becky/Shayna, Charlotte/Rhea, Bryan/Cena, Edge/Orton, Rollins/Owens, Styles/Undertaker and a big gimmick match for the SD tag titles. 9 matches, main card goes about 4 and a half with the knowledge that you can avoid the pre show unless you fancy battle royals. Easy.

Alas, yay to Bayley and Naomi wrestling in silence after 6 hours for their WRESTLEMANIA MOMENT UNBEEEELIEVABLE.

The Hall of Fame is on my birthday, so don't think I'll be watching that, Smackdown eh I'll miss like usual. NXT I'd like to see but I have a wedding I'm going to that night, so I'll watch that Sunday morning if possible, and then get ready for WrestleMania. I took the day after off of work so it'll be fun.

Also, weren't they gearing up for AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton at one point? What happened with that storyline?

The read is Cena and Undertaker will be setting up their 'Mania angles this week. I guess there's a slight possibility he could set up a match for the Chamber too considering that's next week.

Otis and Mandy officially getting together and sharing their first kiss.

Okay fantasy booking with that one but that would be a great Wrestlemania moment.

I'm just glad they replaced Triple H with Triple H 2.0 Edge. You remember, the guy they wanted to cut his hair because people might confused him with Hunter lol. The stupid shit that the WWE does sometimes.

They did want him to cut his hair, so he quit. Then he fuckin cut his hair like a month later and returned to TNA like a dope.

This year it seemed like they spent a little too much time "pointing out" how corny it is to point at the sign. It was almost done as a joke every time someone did it.

What I want to know is this....Is it a real sign or a graphic that nobody can see live? I have a feeling it's not a real sign and the crowd think these guys and gals look fucking stupid.

    It has to be real.

I just remember whenever anyone cut their hair in the mid 2000's (Test, Christian, Kazarian, etc.) the online rumor was always that it was because Triple H wanted to be the only guy with long hair.

Not sure about this one tbh. I'm all in for Drew beating Brock and I'm glad the women appear to be getting a fair share of the card and the big matches for them all have me interested but man a lot of big names of the men's side look to be missing out. The likes of Daniel Bryan, Kofi (both in the WWE title match last year), Strowman, Ricochet, Rey, Nakamura etc. potentially on the pre-show/in the battle royal is a bit sad.

Not that interested and probably doesn't seem very realistic, mainly due to Cena.

I dig it. It sure as fuck would be better than Elias v. Cena. Or Corbin v. Cena which I have a feeling is what we're going to get. I have a feeling Vince pulled John to the side and begged him to help get Corbin over by doing the job for him at Mania.

The last WrestleMania I did not watch Live was WrestleMania 2000 (which was 16). I might not watch this year.

Literally 0 matches are interesting. Drew McIntyre can count to three, and is now a star because of it? Lame. Great to have a new main eventer, but when the only new one is Drew McIntyre. Meh.

Drew vs Brock = BattleGround main event
Everything else = shamefully retarded and lackluster

Charlott vs Rhea Ripley? Umm no.
Becky vs Shayna? Sorry, this is not elevating Shayna, this is dropping Becky down.

I'll watch Bloodsport and then just stare at my exhausted, bloody, dick for 7 hours instead

Drew had the entire audience point at the sign with him this week. That kind of makes up for it, lol.

So Cena went from not wanting a match at Mania for younger talent to have a spot, to accepting a match 30 seconds later because The Fiend pointed to the WM sign. WTF? This is a poor set-up & Fiend’s total lack of threat post-Super Showdown means I’ve got no interest at all in this.

Speaking of WrestleMania. WWE Hall of Fame looks solid.

Vote on this debate between myself and mth about who doesn't belong in the WWE Hall of Fame.

We're looking for some public votes.

Ricochet and McIntyre are both awesome. Ricochet was completely in the wrong place at the wrong time and was sacrificed with zero build to make Brock look stronger than he already needed to be. Not the end for him of course but another stupid exercise to make people Brock is strong and the Saudis wank off on it lol.

Drew deserves his Mania spot and will hopefully Claymore his arse in quick fashion. I hate Brock more than Goldberg tbf. At least Goldberg is occasional. Brock we have to put up with sporadic shit with Heyman (as great as he is) broken record Brock promos all year round.

Brock can still deliver great matches. Goldberg is limited as hell. Give me Brock any day of the week.

Brock is lazy/limited too. With the correct performer (eg Bryan, Styles, Joe, dare I say it GOLDBERG did). His act has gotten more tired though IMO throughout the years because of his lack of activity and the fact Heyman delivers the same shit over and over. Nothing for Ricochet, really just another pawn to get to the Mania match.

Now Wyatt got stupid treatment to Goldberg, yes I will not deny that and I realise there’s a lot of fuming right now. Playing devil’s advocate a bit though, Goldberg though he should not have ended Wyatt’s reign especially as weakly as he did will fuck off after Mania and will not have an overall detrimental effect like Brock does with his tired act.

Brock is younger, will strong arm WWE into business the way he wants and will be around a lot longer. Much better chance Goldberg fucks off soon.

I only really watch during WM season, so I'm not sure if Aleister Black is in a program already, but I'd definitely be into a triple threat match between he, AJ and Taker at WrestleMania. Black wants revenge against Styles for ending his undefeated streak, Styles is focused on Taker, so Black spends a few weeks trying to be an obstacle and insert himself into the match to no avail. Taker makes an appearance on Raw to conduct a solo promo against AJ, and Black interrupts. From there he either attacks Taker or just stares him down. Depending on how you want Undertaker to look going into the event.

It's all so backward. Imagine using the guy you've built up for a year as collateral in the build up to AJ Styles against a bloke that can't move properly. It's not a hard story to book with the players involved - The OC Pillmanize 'Taker for the Saudi stuff, Black takes offence as 'Taker's occult persona brought a man like him out of the shadows. Build to Black vs. Styles at 'Mania, 'Taker returns to take out Anderson and Gallows, Black Mass, 123. Cool imagery post match with Take's endorsing Black with the trademark pose at Black doing his lotus. Star made. Styles vs. Undertaker is then a hyped match for the next Saudi show.

But then Taker doesn't get a WM payday that he doesn't need at all. I really think he'll beat Styles, too. The point of Reigns beating him at Mania was to say 'only he is capable of matching Lesnar'. There's no way they see Styles at that level and he's probably only got another couple of full time years himself anyway.

I like your Styles/Black idea a lot, FB. But they'd never do that.

Why are they doing Cena/Wyatt again? Been done at Mania and it wasn't great then.

I haven't really been watching the past 6-9 months but I'll tune in for a Taker/Styles programme. No way Black would get me back invested in the same way because dull and brooding doesn't appeal in the same way that legendary and brooding does.

Yeah I can see their logic, lapsed fans are more likely to carry on watching an episode of Raw or Smackdown if a staple of their youth is on screen. The irony of course being that these lapsed fans exist because of their failures to make the regular roster look like hard cases. Top baby face getting covered in dog food by Baron Corbin. Fans would have left in droves in 1998 too if Steve Austin got covered in dog food by Jeff Jarrett and Southern Justice. Only time Steve would interact with the midcard was if he was kicking fuck out of them. A real superstar. It's what is working about Drew at the minute. Just booting people's heads in every week. Dialogue isn't great but he looks hard, acts hard, and the fans buy into that.

And part of that has been missing the opportunity to have meaningful 'passing the torch' moments, making them look like top guys by beating established stars while they are still credible themselves. It's no good having Roman Reigns beat The Undertaker at Mania, because he was a two matches a year man and had already been beaten by Brock. It's no good having Wyatt beat Cena now because he's clearly got one foot well out of the door.

Fans can tell the difference between someone famous who is being brought in to lose, and someone who is still going to be a credible force, and crucially, still going to be around, afterwards. What did it mean when CM Punk beat Jericho in 2012? Nothing really, because it was so transparently 'a former world champion' coming in to put Punk over. Jericho wasn't really a credible main eventer at that time.

McIntyre beating Lesnar will work great, providing it gets followed up with one or two other meaningful feuds.

WWE has spent too many years pushing what THEY want first and sprinkling what the fans want around it. They disguise these pushes as ways to throw us off so they can then insert more of their personal choice. The Fiend, everyone is into it, not in a babyface way just that we appreciate the fuck out of the character and younger fans are probably scared shitless idk. But what do they do? Spend most of Smackdown on Roman v. Corbin, what THEY want ultimately as the main focus.

Someone mentioned doing a 6 man tag with Taker/Black and some other face vs The OC and I like that idea, Taker looked decent in the tag match with Roman more so than any singles match he's had in years.

I don't get this. A few days ago you were digging everyone out for being too negative, but one of the main reasons we were being that way was because we could see what it meant for Wrestlemania.

Super Showdown was a good show. I'm just not looking forward to Reigns vs. Goldberg. I'd rather it Reigns vs. Cena and a Wyatt vs. Goldberg rematch.

Drew vs Lesnar and Becky vs Baszler are the only two matches I'm looking forward to. I did watch the Rumble after not watching WWE in months and I enjoyed it, so hopefully Mania will be the same. But knowing it'll end up being 6+ hours, I'm not so sure I'll end up watching the entire thing in one night.

But even if it was a good show (which it wasn't, it was hot trash), it doesn't exist in a vacuum. It has to be put in the context of what it means within the bigger picture, what it means for the future, how certain talents are being used etc. - your lack of excitement for Mania is tied up in that show.

I agree. Sometimes the build for these matches suck for the most part, then the actual match itself is pretty damn good. It's been that way forever. I can only imagine who excited nobody was for WM 6 with Hart Foundation v. the Bullshitevicts.. Fucking squash match in Canada. Or how about WM 7, Tenry and the douchebag Sumo beating the piss out of Demolition? Yeah what a build. It started that night with Regis lol.

You find me a WrestleMania that every match had a great build or even a decent build top to bottom and I'll show a video of me, Katy Perry, Beyonce, and Prince having a 4-way dance with no pants reffed by Sheryl Crow's ex husband Lance, winner of a bike race in France in a trance because you know Prince has the fire and my eyeballs have an alien glance.

Ripley vs. Charlotte's got me super amped.

    Becky/Baszler should be solid enough.

Orton/Edge is probably going to be pretty damn good and likely have the hottest crowd response.

I don't really give a shit about McIntyre/Lesnar but I will be pleased to see Lesnar get beat and will enjoy rooting for Drew to get it done.

Styles vs. Taker (vs. Black?) has potential, especially if it does become that triple threat where the good dudes can do the heavy lifting for the old man.

I'm down for Cena/Fiend and Goldberg/Reigns to some extent though not overly stoked for either (prefer them over Reigns/Feind and Cena/Goldberg, though). The former should deliver in ring and the latter could but I do worry it'll be a two-moves-a-piece-spamfest like Lesnar/Reigns matches were regressed to.

So all in all, thus far not going nuts over things as much as other years but everything's decent enough and I'm always pretty jacked for Mania just because it's Mania and I watch it at the movie theater which is a always dope experience.

I just fear it will go on for fucking ever. I don't get how they can listen to these crowds at the end of these marathons and not think to cut it a bit. It's just excessive. Saying that, I've thought that about the film industry for a while too, blockbusters going 2 and a half hours because they can. Like theoretically this thing could be:

    Lesnar vs. McIntyre
    Goldberg vs. Reigns
    Orton vs. Edge
    Wyatt vs. Cena
    Rollins vs. Owens
    Bryan vs. Sheamus
    Flair vs. Ripley
    Becky vs. Shayna
Bayley vs. Naomi vs. Sasha vs. Lacey
    Kabuki Warriors vs. Natalya/Phoenix
    Strowman vs. Corbin
Andrade vs. Mysterio vs. Carillo vs. Garza (with potentially Ricochet and Black thrown in, or in instead)
Street Profits vs. AOP (vs... ?)
Morrison/Miz vs. Usos vs. New Day vs. Ziggler/Roode
    Men's Battle Royal
    Women's Battle Royal

16 bastard matches again! That 90+ minute stretch after the 3 hour mark starting with Reigns and McIntyre nearly finished me off last year. It's too much.

Should hold it over two nights, Saturday and Sunday. Then you can sell individual day tickets or get a bundle package. That would be 8 matches a night.

Don't know what you'd do with TakeOver though.

You'd really start to mess with coordination of events. There's Hall of Fame, a Smackdown, a Takeover, potentially two nights of Mania, and Raw then.

Then they should stop treating it like everybody gets a trophy day - a lot of this just comes from them having way, WAY too many people under contract.

Everyone wants the big pay day, and that's the reason why everyone's squished in. WrestleMania should really be 7 or 8 hotly anticipated matches. Throw in a squash match or 2 for a breather between epic matches. If these part timers fucked off and they buit guys up correctly they could easily do this with their current roster. I

If I were WWE, since they love to do next night on Raw/Smackdown rematches from the prior ppv....Why not take 3-4 of those possible matches and put them on Raw and SD after Mania? IDK how Fox would feel about a co-brand Raw after Mania show or you could just do it then and still have those people from other parts of the world in town to amp it up even more for the SD roster.

Back in the old day they would do 12 matches on the ppv broadcast but 70% of them had basically no build and lasted under 5 minutes. Is that a bad thing? I mean, I can't say it is when some of those early Mania's were during the peak 80's. And that also included musical acts like Run DMC or backstage stuff with Regis and Bob.

But everyone pretends like we need to have every match go 15-20 minutes.

I think WrestleMania VI had an insane amount of matches on the card, but a lot of them were under 5 minutes lol.

Yep that's what I'm saying. I think today that wouldn't fly because it's almost unheard of for them to just throw a match on Mania these days whereas in 1989 it didn't matter if Earthquake and Hercules had a 5 month story. Shit even back then they would only start building from Rumble, if that, for major feuds. Sgt Slaughter v Hulk Hogan, Savage v. Warrior, not much build at all for those Mania 7 main events.

But imagine if Edge/Orton went 3 minutes. People would lose their shit.

Maybe that's the requirement for an epic 5 star match these days, 20 plus minutes. If you want a real challenge, give us a five star match in 3 minutes.

Goldberg and Brock both like a good challenge. Maybe Brock will go first again so he can beat traffic.

I'd love it if Roman/Goldberg goes like five seconds with Roman immediately spearing him at the bell. That would be fun.

I've only wanted Strowman to beat Lesnar. I'm fine with Lesnar beating everyone else, including Drew McIntyre.

I like Shayna, but I think she has considerably less upside than a lot of the women that have come through development. Nia Jax, however, is not one of them.

Crazy Io coming and fucking Becky up would have been my choice. I hear she's injured though. She's absolutely class.

I read the report on the first point, but not for the second point.
While I thought the match on Monday was good for what it was, it was too long and there wasn't really a build for the match they were going to have in the first...so there definitely wasn't any for the match they ended up having.

No way they're switching from Shayna to Jax this late in the game. If he's cooled on her, she loses at Mania but I can't see the sudden change in direction after what's already gone down. There's a good backstory in place for Nia to step in as a challenger as soon as she's able, though, and I'd be all for it.

The Raw match with Kairi was weird because it's 2 heels and it was a cold match. I'll be honest, the women's EC looks weak as fuck and the only thing I care about is seeing Asuka and Shayna throw down.

These stupid fucking rumors about "Vince has cooled down on Shayna, he's going to bury Ricochet" It's all just people guessing and depending on the platform they're putting that shit on dictates how "credible" that is. So if I say "Man, Vince is obviously burying Ricochet having him lose to Riddick fucking Moss CLEAN!" Then I'm just another dude on social media. But if that cornball Bryan Alvarez or Uncle Dave says it, then 100 million tweets drop dog shit all over the WWE for something that is just an "educated" guess.

    1. Men's Battle Royal
    2. Women's Battle Royal
    3. Lesnar versus McIntyre
    4. Ripley versus Flair
    5. Lynch versus Baszler
    6. Taker and Black versus The OC
    7. Goldberg versus Reigns (Universal Title)
    8. Orton versus Edge
    9. IC Title Match ???
    10. Fatal 4way for the US Title: Andrade versus Carrillo versus Mysterio versus Garza
    11. Street Profits versus AOP (Raw Tag titles)
    12. Miz and Morrison versus Heavy Machinery versus Roode and Ziggler versus The Usos (SD Tag titles)
    13. Fatal 4way for the SD Women's Title: Bayley versus Lacey versus Naomi versus Sasha
    14. Women's Tag Title Match
    15. Cena versus The Fiend
    16. Owens versus Rollins

I would do Bryan versus Zayn for the IC title but I could very well see a rematch for Strowman. If Bryan isn't in that, he's doing something with Gulak again or Sheamus.

They could do a 6-way for the IC title with Strowman, Daniel Bryan, Gulak, Zayn, Cesaro, and Nakamura. Maybe take out Cesaro and put in Elias or Sheamus.

The idea that the 2 most over babyfaces on Smackdown, DB and Strowman, don't have a clear path to Mania right now is disturbing to me.

I wish they'd fuck the Money in the Bank PPV off and have the matches at Wrestlemania, considering they're obsessed with putting every fucker on the card. Could have condensed whatever Styles, Bryan and the midcard belts are doing for massive MITB matches, like at Wrestlemania 23. Styles, Black, Andrade, Mysterio, Carillo, Garza, Owens and Rollins for Raw, Bryan, Gulak, Strowman, Zayn, Nakamura, Cesaro, Sheamus and Hardy for Smackdown. 2 bangers that people care about (midcard titles, they do not) and you chop 3 matches from the line-up. Then you run the separated matches on TV, promoted in advance, the week after 'Mania.

Still not very into this card but am glad if Black & Taker vs OC is the way they're going. Much more likely to entertain and not embarrass than a straightforward AJ/Taker singles match. Black can do most of the legwork for Taker, a load of guys running round doing stuff and Black gets a good rub too rather than just 54 year old Undertaker.

Looks like city officials, including the mayor, will be discussing what to do with upcoming events in Tampa. Official word from the state is probably the only thing that will stop Vince from allowing fans to be present.

Listen, I'm not shocked they are considering it. Mania brings in people across the globe which is a not great thing right now. I think it's playing into fear, however I get why people in Tampa don't want to risk it and are going to eat the millions it brings. They would just break even with all the medical attention they would need to do the event.

The way everything is going down one after another there is just no way this is happening. I mean Vince will be the one guy going down kicking and screaming, but there is just no way at this point.

So, let's say Tampa says no to this. What do you think Plan B is? If it's post ponded I will say it will be in late May or early June. Vince could take it to another town or just do a massive Raw and SmackDown that week if Tampa lets them. Is an empty arena Mania a possibility?

There's no point to an empty arena show, it's not like a sporting event that does have some point outside of fan entertainment (ie it is an actual competition). Would a band go out and play a gig to an empty arena?

The television network is paying for the rights. You think fox would say don't do a show for the billions we are paying you? Now if they want to cancel house shows, that's one thing. The tv show still has advertisers. A band does not.

Just run episodes from 1998 instead, same people on it that pop the rating nowadays.

I just don't think it's economically plausible to move it, is it? People that have tickets now can't just go in June. They'd just have to call it off, refund, and turn Backlash or whatever into an arena 'Mania. Take the knock like every other sports franchise will.

But so much of what they do is reliant on there being an audience. I mean to be totally fair, people might tune in out of morbid curiosity but I think it would be one of the strangest and probably worst shows of all time.

They'd be giving away a ton of matches that (they think) are very bankable - just shut your eyes and imagine Reigns vs Goldberg with no crowd. Two men walk down a long ramp, stare at each other in silence, take turns charging at each other for about 4 minutes and then they leave, all in silence. It's absolutely inconceivable that they would do this as an empty arena show.

They are going to put a lot of pressure in whatever avenues exist to them to be able to run the show as usual but three weeks from now who knows what the lay of the land will be. It appears to me that the USA is not really taking it seriously yet anyway so there's plenty of time for things to get a lot worse.

The fact that there will be thousands of international fans in attendance is a key consideration here, although it also raises the question of whether or not those people will even be able to fly by then (whether due to flight cancellations or official advice).

Definitely won't be in an empty arena. Would take a gigantic hit just to bump the Network subscriptions briefly (all of which would be a free trial). Artistically, aesthetically, financially, it's just implausible.

I think it gets called off. It can't not at this rate. If peak level projections are accurate, early April events will all be off the table. Precedent has been set over here with the Arsenal game tonight.
