Rajah Top TV of all Time

After our recent top 10/25 lists of films I thought we should do tv next. But, tv lists always get dominated by stuff like Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
So I thought we should massively over complicate this really try to show how diverse TV can be and give other genres than Drama and sit-coms a chance to be represented. Ive still included Drama and sit-coms of course.
There are 10 categories, I would like your top 10 for each, this might be asking a bit much, so a minimum of 5 per category would be appreciated.
The categories are below with some explanation in case its not too clear. Each Category will get its own countdown and then if possible I will try to do an overall list combining the categories. (This will depend on if the scores are unique enough I think)
I will post directly below this with a form you can fill in and PM me, put your choices in descending order so best at 1.

    Drama:
Traditional hour long dramas or even soaps, everyone loves Hollyoaks right?
    Comedy:
Sit-coms or Stand up specials, skit shows, panel shows, impressionists, etc.

    Sci-fi/Fantasy
Stuff in Space, stuff in the future, stuff with robots or Vampires.

    Live event/sport/News:
This one may not be a favourite but something you consider significant, I am undecided as to if you would have had to have seen it live or not, because it seems like the moon landings should be on this but there’s not a lot of us that saw that, so I’ll leave that up to you.

    Cartoon:
For kids or adults, as long as its animated, I suppose this could include puppets.

    Children’s
This is where you would put The A-Team and Knightrider as well as Grange Hill.

    Documentary:
One offs, returning series, crime, science, nature, whatever.

    Reality/Talent/Game Show:
Stuff with contestants celebrity or otherwise, or people in a house/jungle/city.

    Travel/food/ Magazine:
People cooking, people eating and Top Gear.

    Wrestling:
PPV or specific episode of RAW or whatever.

If you think your choice falls in to 2 categories just pick one to put it in and I can move it around depending on general consensus.
Have I missed a category? Does a show you like not fit anywhere? Will this even work?

I'm in, although I probably won't be able to get to 5 when it comes to the sci-fi, wrestling and travel/food categories.

As long as you don't have a time frame of when you want these lists I'm down. But you're asking for a lot all at once lol.

I don't have to do all of them right? Some of these categories I can barely think of 5 shows that even qualify.

Are The Simpsons and South Park, etc, excluded from the comedy category since they're in the cartoon list?? IMO just have comedy be all encompassing and still include the cartoon list separately even though there would be overlap. Lost is another one where it's definitely going in my best drama list but would also qualify for sci-fi/fantasy.

The documentary and travel/food ones are the ones I would consider dropping.

Yea that's probably just me then. Those were never my genres. My documentary list will be like

    1. Planet Earth
    2. The Jinx
    3. a bunch of other nature docs from the planet earth makers

Put shows where you think they fit best and I will go with the general consensus if they pop up in more than 1 category.

I'm going to lump any comic book themed shows in the fantasy section. I don't know if I'd consider shows like Smallville and Gotham "drama" but who knows. Fuck this is going to take forever lol.

Explain to me again WHY you didn't just do a thread at a time as opposed to doing all of these at once? Was it to prevent Romford for fucking up something? lol. JUST KIDDING. All good.

Actually I'm going to be honest not that it matters but I'm going to skip this one. I started to make my lists and realized A-I never and still don't really watch tv and B-most of these categories I have MAYBE 1 show to put on. If it becomes a more condensed approach where 1 thread gets made for a top 10 cartoons or something I'll be down but yeah I"m out lol.

why not just fill out the ones you can, like drama, comedy and cartoon only? I'm probably skipping documentary and travel and wrestling. just do the ones you can.

I had 3 categories filled with almost 10 and the rest were blank Considering this will probably be released in November I might swing back in. I mean it's not like BM is going to go "Hey you said you weren't doing one your list is not valid!"

    So we'll see.

If it is cool to submit incomplete lists, I would do it. But I could never come up with 10 for each categories.

Reality is the one I will be skipping. I have never watched a "reality" show in my life. That one will be zero. But I can get at least 5 for the rest; probably all 10.

Personally, I will be submitting my FAVORITE shows and not necessarily the BEST. Is that the consensus or are we more looking for objective quality as part of the rankings and less personal preference?

I just started and am realizing my comedy were more comedy shows (like Brooklyn Nine-Nine) but I see that you more mean stuff like Chappelle Show

    Is that right?

Nevermind, for some reason my mind skimmed over sit-coms the second time I read it. Carry on.

Saturday Night Live should place highly on the comedy list. I mean say what you will about the cast and quality at any given time, it’s a damn institution that has churned our more stars than anything else in entertainment that I can think of

I’m definitely going to forget shows that I would highly rate had I remembered them. So many damn TV shows.

I don't think the likes of SNL live, Chappelle etc will place that high.

They haven't been exported to the rest of the world like Friends etc

It's actually a ridiculous number.. 532 original scripted shows in 2019.. there were 210 in 2009..

There Are More TV Shows Than Ever Before

532... that’s insane. There is no way someone watches more then 10-20, depending on their schedule.

Yeah but how many of them are actually funny? A few high profile alumni:

Eddie Murphy (mixed bag but we'll give him a tick for Coming to America alone - everything post 2000 has been shite)
Mike Myers (Austin Powers was great, everything else he's done has been pretty mediocre)
Will Ferrell (not funny at all)
Adam Sandler (useless hack, an affront to entertainment)
Chris Farley (funnyish in his own time, looks very dated now)
Andy Samberg (yes, funny on B99, Lonely Island were very good, big ol' tick)
    Chris Parnell (fine)

The guys who Braun Strowman got in a fight with last year could be successful movie stars five years from now and yet they are to comedy what cancer is to everything.

Sorry if this has been asked -- but can we count the same series in multiple categories?

Like, Game of Thrones would be both fantasy/Sci-Fi and Drama in my mind... rated higher on the fantasy side...

No, put it on whatever list fits best, Game of Thrones is Sci-Fi/Fantasy

See that's where the categories are kinda detrimental. Game of Thrones and Lost are two of the most popular dramatic TV shows of all time, but we're going to exclude them from the drama list and only compare them against Star Trek and Battestar Gallactica and The Twilight Zone?

Those shows though are pure science fiction whereas imo Game of Thrones is FANTASY. I can see the argument for it being a drama to a lot of nerds like us but I would imagine someone who watches Law and Order isn't looking at Game of Thrones as the same type of "drama". There's too much zombie, dragon, elf, etc going on with Game of Thrones for it to be IMHO a drama in the same vein as Criminal Minds or whatever the fuck people watch that's a drama, I only know murder shows lol.

I did not do every category and had Batman 1966 in drama for reasons even now I question. I hate sci-fi and fantasy being lumped together. I made GOT drama same goes with Buffy and Angel, because they have horror and fantasy elements, but are ultimately dramas.

I was about to say we already did that recently, but it was back in 2013. God, time flies. But it wasn't pruned so it's there if you want to see. Just search for sports in the thread title.

Now that doesn't preclude us from doing it again mind you. I mean we've done all of these lists before (well not all of the categories proposed here but certainly drama, comedy and cartoon) but most of the threads are gone and in any event it's fun to re-do them every 5 years or so.

Yeah it'd be one thing if we were talking about 7 weeks, but 7 years? Yeah it's time to make a new one.

I thought this list would easier than it is turning out to be. I am struggling to decide between the shows that I LOVE and the shows that I know are better but I don't personally care as much.

There is no world that "Married…With Children" is objectively better than "The Office" but I enjoy MWC much more. Decisions, decisions…

Go with what you like. I definitely left out some big hitters because they didn't grab me (or because I hadn't seen them). It's your personal list after all.

If I really do this, I think "Newsradio" is my #1 comedy. Most underrated show ever.

Takes a little while to put all the responses in the spreadsheet, so don’t expect any countdowns anytime soon, also this means if you haven’t done a list you still have plenty of time.

Did I send you one? If not I can send it today, at least in one of the couple categories I was able to fill out. More lists are better, you should make a last call rather than shutting people out!

    The results are in (finally).
I'm just going to post the top 10's rather than do a count down as that would possibly take the rest of my life. I'll start with the overall list which combines all the genres and shows our collective favourite TV of all time, then I will do the top 10's of each of the genres.
    Drum roll please.

So still very drama heavy, but interestingly in a number 1, a cartoon (yes not a comedy as some people listed it, the give away was the fact that its a cartoon). Better Call Saul did very well, I might have to give that another try as I didn't really like it the first time I watched.
Another interesting thing at the opposite end of the popularity scale was that the Moon landing is a popular as Two and a Half men on Rajah, I not sure what this says about us. Probably nothing good.
Shockingly few people voted for any Wrestling considering the site we are on and people really don't give a fuck about Documentaries. Comedies and Kids shows had the most unique nominations on the other hand.
So that's a thing now, discuss if you are so inclined.

I think the thing with the moon landing is that while I know it's a significant event, I sure as well wasn't alive for it.

I don't believe I had Better Call Saul on my list but it is so damn good that I'm glad it got recognition. I snuck in Fargo ahead of it. Fargo seasons 1 and 2 are so damn good.

Who other than cbac was even alive for the moon landing?

I could have listed maybe 5 documentaries but they'd all have been Attenborough so what would be the point?

Here is the top 10 Dramas:

Oz criminally underatted and missing out on the top 10 (getit?)
Few suprises other than that, personally I would like to have seen Deadwood crack the top 10 and I still need to finish watching Chernobyl.
Ive never seen Mr Robot, but it sounds like it should have been on a different list perhaps, but then again I'm not sure how sci-fi it is Im just going by the name.
The Wire took me 3 separate attempts to get in to it, but I really didnt regret it when I did, and its something I will re-watch at some point down the line.
Band of Brothers is funny to watch again now and see all the actors youd never heard of pop up who are now all sorts of famous.

Surprisingly, there are no robots in Mr. Robot. It's about a hacker who is in a vigilante group similar to Anonymous.

I haven't seen Mr Robot, but the other 9, dammmmmn that's a list. I think the Sopranos is the best but Breaking Bad is a worthy winner. Incredible show.

Dunst was in the stellar 2nd season. I wouldn't call the 3rd season dreck but it was mediocre.

I highly encourage you guys to watch Mr. Robot. It just wrapped up its final season recently and it's so so good.

Can’t believe I forgot Band of Brothers. Oz was definitely a contender to make my list.

Haven’t watched Sopranos Mad Men or The Shield so they were absent from my list.

Edit. Oh wait. Oz did sneak in at the ten spot for me.

    Top 10 comedies now:

I really don't get the love for Seinfeld, its just never been my thing.
Fairly even spilt between US and UK shows especially if you consider I'm Alan Partridge missed the top 10 by a single point.
I'll always have time for Only Fools and Horses, would of liked to have seen that slightly higher up the list and the US version beating the UK version of The Office didn't come as a surprise, but ill always prefer the original, with the second part of the Christmas special being a particular favourite.

I love The Office (U.S.). I'm in a constant state of rewatching it. The Office Ladies podcast is great too. I love how it's become a cultural staple even more so now on streaming services and on social media than it was when it was airing.

It's hard to compare the original (15 episodes) and the U.S. version (201 episodes). It's like comparing an album to a catalog of 10 albums.

Yes, but specifically one really good album to the complete works of Madonna. Long lasting, some decent stuff, mostly filler and average all the way through.

The fact that Friends is third brings shame upon this forum. Who did this, own up.

I had it 8th, which is down from when we last made these list at which time I think it was in my top 3. It is unquestionably one of the best sitcoms of all time. The last couple seasons got dodgy, as they do for almost any sitcom that runs that long. But it is such a classic show with so many iconic TV moments.

I'll always have time for Only Fools and Horses, would of liked to have seen that slightly higher up the list and the US version beating the UK version of The Office didn't come as a surprise, but ill always prefer the original, with the second part of the Christmas special being a particular favourite.
Wow talk about a UK/US split. I thought Brooklyn Nine Nine sucked. Never seen Schitts Creek, Parks and Recreation or Office US.

Delighted to see Red Dwarf and Blackadder. Where the fuck is I'm Alan Partridge though?

The Americans here are such basic bitches. Office, Parks and Rec, Seinfeld, Friends. Snore.

I've never watched Seinfeld so I'm willing to concede that it may be the most hilarious thing ever, but the fact that Americans are still uniformly putting it at number one shows how absolutely embarrassing the standard of their comedy has been since. Surprised they didn't vote How I Met Your Mother into the top ten.

The results are interesting regardless, but my guess is we didn't have too many voters so the list isn't exactly a great representation of broad preferences. For instance I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Robot made the drama list on the strength of me and Pablo Diablo's votes alone. He and I were pretty much the only ones discussing it on the forum as the final season aired last year.

Seinfeld is good in fairness. I would put Curb Your Enthusiam and Frasier ahead on the US side. All 3 are better than shite like Friends and Brooklyn 99. I want to see the US Office because of the hype on here.

I cannot imagine it is better than the UK version though, which is nigh on perfect. I am biased, but I honestly believe the UK has the better comedy. Sorry Americans.

Comedy was always going to be the most contentious. Good to see Canada gets its representation though.

And Fro when I saw Mr Robot on the list I was almost sure that you and I were the majority of its points.

I fucking love Family Guy but I was under the impression most people hated it. Surprised to see it at number four.

Seinfeld and the American Office are two of the greatest of all time. Neither are a patch on the original Office though.

American Office is the most overrated show ever. Not to say that is was not great (I would call it top 25 range), but it is nowhere near the legendary status is currently has. The first season was average and it fell off a cliff in quality after Carrell left in S7 but slogged on for 3 more unfunny years.

At best, it was the 3rd best NBC Thursday sitcom of the early 00s (Behind Parks and Rec then Community, probably behind 30 Rock too). If you count 'Scrubs' as an NBC Thursday show, it is also ahead of 'The Office'.

Seinfeld deserves it place because it changed all successful sitcoms afterwards. Before Seinfeld, everything was cliched and forced misunderstandings; Seinfeld brought "real life" into TV comedies.

I like season 1 and I'd even go as far to say that it lost its way before Carell left. But those few seasons make it the best American sitcom - and Michael the best character - ever in my view. Curb, Always Sunny, Arrested Development and Seinfeld round out my top 5.

So only the pilot episode is a direct remake of the BBC version like that, and of course I would give credit to the original writers over the American writers who re-wrote it. BUT.... in terms of which of those two scenes is funnier/better, it's the American version.

I didn't vote Friends but it's a fine sitcom, no shame in having it on your list. Was never quite my cup of tea but I've seen probably 40 episodes of it and it's not bad.

The first few seasons of Friends are class in their own way but shouldn't even be in this convo.

If you are going just pure peak, I have no problem with The Office being in the conversation. S2 and S3 and most of S4 was all-time great. S1 was OK but Michael was still just playing David Brent, so I never enjoy them as much.

I think that the whole series has to be considered when talking the all-time. That is why I have Parks, Curb, Seinfeld, Arrested, Newsradio (my sleeper pick) higher (only one bad season).
