Not good for the Pats. You wonder how many other opt outs are about to start flooding in.

The only silver lining potentially for the Pats would be if these early decisions enable them to sign Clowney to a one year deal before other teams are in need.

As for dalvin cook, he's asking to be paid just under 15/yr, which would put him behind only Cmac and Zeke. RB as a position is one known to have a short lifespan and RBs with durability concerns carry that much more risk. Cook has played 29 of a possible 48 games, having never played a 16-game season. I'm not saying he isn't deserving or that I agree, but I can certainly understand why they're weary of giving him a mega deal.
they won two games from a missed FG and that last Niners game by one yard. They won almost all the 50/50 games and history suggests that doesn't happen. They are closer to a 9 win team than a 12 win team.

He has yet to play a full season. He is an incredible player, and I do think they'll get a deal done similar to the Henry extension.

I can't fault the guys who are doing what they can to protect their families, especially if they have enough stashed away so they don't have to risk it.

But I loved this Patriot Paranoia - https://nesn.com/2020/07/nfl-exec-be...iots-opt-outs/

One NFL Exec believes Bill Belichek is masterminding his team's opt-outs

Well especially not this season. With the entire world waiting to compare and contrast how Brady does in TB with how Bill is doing in NE.

    So 8 games for AB..

I don't feel like swimming through all of his drama to gage the fairness of that penalty, but just from memory it sounds about right, idk.

His twitter should be pretty fun.

2020 Quarterback Tiers: 50 coaches and evaluators rank the NFL starters

Fifty NFL coaches and evaluators rated 35 veteran quarterbacks this year while providing candid evaluations that appear in the analysis below. The process was simple. Coaches and evaluators placed each quarterback in one of five tiers, from best (Tier 1) to worst (Tier 5). Once ballots were collected, results were averaged to create a ranking. Our unanimous Tier 1 choices averaged 1.00, while the lowest-rated player averaged 4.30. Quarterbacks fell into the tiers in which they received the most votes.

    TIER 1

A Tier 1 quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations. He has no real holes in his game.

    1. Patrick Mahomes
    2. Russell Wilson
    3. Aaron Rodgers
    4. Drew Brees
    5. Deshaun Watson

    TIER 2

A Tier 2 quarterback can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently. He can handle pure passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game.

    6. Tom Brady
    7. Lamar Jackson
    8. Ben Roethlisberger
    9. Matt Stafford
    10. Matt Ryan
    11. Carson Wentz
    12. Dak Prescott
    13. Philip Rivers

    TIER 3

A Tier 3 quarterback is a legitimate starter but needs a heavier running game and/or defensive component to win. A lower-volume dropback passing offense suits him best.

    14. Kyler Murray
    15. Kirk Cousins
    16. Jared Goff
    17. Jimmy Garoppolo
    18. Ryan Tannehill
    19. Cam Newton
    20. Derek Carr
    21. Baker Mayfield
    22. Josh Allen
    23. Teddy Bridgewater
    24. Sam Darnold
    25. Daniel Jones
    26. Nick Foles

    TIER 4

A Tier 4 quarterback could be an unproven player with some upside or a veteran who is ultimately best suited as a backup.

    27. Marcus Mariota
    28. Ryan Fitzpatrick
    29. Tyrod Taylor
    30. Drew Lock
    31. Gardner Minshew
    32. Mitch Trubisky
    33. Dwayne Haskins
    34. Jarrett Stidham
    35. Kyle Allen
    Pretty fun annual exercise.

I'm no longer putting Tom Brady nearly that high. His skills, other than reading how a defense is set and his ability to change a call on the fly, have diminished. The Pats defense was much more a reason for their success. What was most telling was that Belichek no longer wanted him (anywhere near the level he's being paid), so the Pats didn't give him an offer.

He may be the best QB ever, but Father Time is undefeated.

And this list is presumably about where things stand this season.

So I'd have him in the same tier as Garoppolo / Big Ben / Cousins at this point in Tier 3

Does anybody actually believe that there will be football (at any level) this Fall? If so, I have some cheap downtown Vancouver real estate that I’d like to sell to you.

I want to agree with 3puppies and down rank Brady in the NFL QB tier, but then I look at the offensive weapons around him and think he’s going to light it up. The strength of his game has been recognizing favourable matchups and getting the ball out before the pass rush gets to him; he hasn’t had these kinds of offensive weapons in 5-6 years (the Randy Moss era?). Evans/Godwin on the outside, Brate/Howard inside, a healthy and motivated Gronk as the #5 option when they go empty set on passing downs? I hate Brady as much as anybody, but caman...

I believe it'll be some team out Seattle, Baltimore, Tampa, and San Francisco.

I don't think it's a smart idea at all, but I see the line of thinking.

Somebody will definitely sign him, take a chance on his talent being able to overcome his propensity for self-destruction (see: Gordon, Josh). It will be an underachieving team that needs to add a shot in the arm to its pedestrian passing game, so no I don’t rule out New England from the list of suitors.

Kirk should be on tier 2 of that list. He is a lot better than Rivers at this point.

Brady will ball out this year and be a top 5 QB. He's got so many weapons in TB, if it wasn't for Covid I'd be saying he'll be an MVP candidate. Their offense will have struggles but he's very healthy and determined, don't sleep on how good this TB offense will be. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Gronk? Whewww baby lets fucking go

Just catching up on Hard Knocks. I have to agree on Lynn.

Cowboys losing Gerald McCoy for the season on a torn quad. That hurts.

Vikings trade for Ngakoue. Just sending a Second and an additional pick to Jacksonville.

Very excited about this trade. Might end up being a one year rental, but he and Danielle Hunter will be scary together.

From 2012-2017 the Jags draft in the top 5 each year:

    WR Justin Blackmon
    OT Luke Joeckel
    QB Blake Bortles
    DE Dante Fowler, Jr.
    CB Jalen Ramsey
    RB Leonard Fournette

None of those Draft picks are on the team any longer as of today..

Trevor Lawrence is a great start, but he's far from all they need..

Patriots rumored to cut WR Mohamed Sanu, to clear up a lot of cap room.

I think Fro is pumped to see what TB12 can do with all that offense around him. Other than the one year he had Moss and Welker, or the year he had the top 2 tight ends in Gronk and the killer, he's never had so many offensive weapons.

The lack of training camp will hurt the Bucs and probably be evident in their first month or so, but Brady is like a coach on the field. He will figure it out.

Really bad, but I’m glad Belichick at least has the wisdom to cut ties now rather than keep him on his overpriced salary because of the price he paid last year.

Not sure this will be of interest to many but Jerry Thornton just blogged Belichick’s worst trades, if you want some additional bad moves to laugh at: https://t.co/I4tELXOntH

For the record it’s not like Fournette is that good, but I still think he is a significant addition to a position of need. Platooning Fournette with Ronald Jones sounds a lot better to me than just leaning heavy on Jones. It’s depth and it’s a likely timeshare.

Fournette could flourish now that he’s going to be on far more high powered offense than he’s ever been on but even if he is just a league average back with some upside, that’s a welcome addition. And he caught a ton of passes last year (76) so I like that element of his game. Brady loves a good check down or screen.

I heard an interesting tidbit this morning from an ex player analyst but can't remember who, he said that one perk Fournette will likely enjoy with Brady is TB's next level knowledge of how/when to recognize and switch plays from pass to run and vice versa. This isn't probably something that was a consistent plus in Jacksonville with the net result for Fournette of now running into far fewer loaded box and disguised scenarios to snuff out a run play or to take advantage of excellent blocking scheme looks up front.

Texans, Deshaun Watson finalizing 4-year, $160M extension, agent says

The Houston Texans are finalizing a four-year, $160 million contract extension with quarterback Deshaun Watson, his agent David Mulugheta told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday.

The total value of the deal is $177.54 million with nearly $111 million in guarantees, trailing only quarterback Patrick Mahomes' 12-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs as the largest in NFL history.

Watson will make $39 million per year in base salary, on average, over the next four years, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL during that time frame.
Great feeling to have a true game changing type qb locked up, but man I'd feel so much better if we had an actual gm to manage contracts versus the cap from here on out.

Pretty much right in line with what most were saying Watson would get. And worth every penny if you ask me. GM issues aside, at least they got this one right.

Also makes it even harder to see Dak getting more than what he was already rumored to be offered. In the 36/37 a year range.

DeAndre Hopkins signed a 2 year, 54.5 million extension. Self negotiated. If Kyler Murray can continue to improve, this offense will be very good.

I mean I’m not saying some people don’t do that kinda thing but consider the source, this podcast previously went viral by having a girl say Trey Songz peed on her. It’s how they make a living.

I can just imagine the taunting on the line, or in the locker room, that OBJ will be hearing.

Reminds me of Rex Ryan's foot fetish, although THAT was far more believable.

I didn't say i believe it's concrete fact. Just that it's not so unheard of for people to have assume out there freaky bedroom behavior. Particularly people with enough wealth to afford the resources and assume some kind of privacy. Particularly people who it's safe to assume have had their run of just 'simple' beautiful women. The kind of thing she alleged happened is on the unusual side for sure, but it's also the kind of thing that happens all the time in discreet securely charged environments.

Would you be honestly jaw-droppingly shocked to find out it were true? If so that's pretty naive imo.

My jaw wouldn't drop but I think it's a rare enough fetish that my stance is I don't believe the story given the source. I think we can both agree that even if true it's none of anybody's business and it's despicable of the girl to publicize it on a podcast. She's a skank for that.

But the question of whether it's possible is an easy one - of course it's possible - my question is do you think it's true?

I certainly agree it's a pretty scuzzy and unnecessary accusation, absolutely.

As for believing it I think there's enough room for skepticism as to give it a default of doubt, but I wouldn't be surprised whatsoever. The shit I've heard from women who work in sex, like i said, it's just simply not that unbelievable.

Oh we'll get the full season.

Only thing is some teams are gonna get real unlucky and lose their top two WRs and the QB to covid for 4 games while others might just lose the backup waterboy for a week.

    Getcha facemask ready.

Because they’ve been essentially locked down, boot camp style, in their cities of employment; all exhibition games were cancelled. I wonder what happens when we introduce the element of travel to the equation, from hot spot to hot spot. The hockey and basketball playoffs have worked to date, knock on wood, because they’ve been locked down since day one; in the case of the NHL, both Tampa Bay/New York went from one lockdown site to another.

Hypothetical situation: Are the Kansas City Chiefs, when traveling to Vegas to play the Raiders, going to fly in Saturday night for a Sunday afternoon game and fly back to KC immediately afterwards? Can you guarantee that the 80+ member traveling entourage will go from the airport to the hotel to the stadium the next day to the airport? And likewise with every other road team every weekend?

If one team has a positive test, that means it’s in the locker room and there’s more than one person who has it. That team has to get taken out of commission and the three teams they played beforehand are on notice. I know the NFL has given themselves two bye weeks to accommodate for COVID, but this has the capability to rapidly descend into chaos.

I want it to succeed, but I just can’t see it happening.

I'm more curious if any of the players who opted out a month ago would like a chance to reconsider..

Quite different countries in terms of viral load though. MLB is the better case study, which after a rocky start leading to postponements of many games, seems to have righted the ship on that front.

Just some early season predictions. Maybe I can not be super wrong on too many of these.

    - The Cowboys are going to be crazy good. Like Super Bowl good.

    - Ravens are going to come back down to earth. They'll make the playoffs but they won't win the division or stomp on teams nearly the way they did last year.

    - Cleveland is going to be much better. Much much better. It just wont matter because they still can't eclipse Balt and Pitt.

    - The Saints will start out looking like a SB team then completely flame out by the end of the season.

    - Wilson will look like fucking Superman willing the Seahawks to several wins they shouldn't get on his way to the MVP.

    - The Titans will win the AFC South while still going 9-7 for the 20th year in a row.

    - I don't buy the Colts. 7-9 at best.

    - Mike Tomlin is going to look like a genius this year and get rid of all the sayers of nay. Leading to him coaching the Steelers for another 15 years.

    - SF is going to come back to earth to some degree. But will still win an amazingly close divisional race between SF/Sea.

People say this every year lol. Not saying they can't win the NFC East because they can but I don't see them as top 5 team like some do.
Why? They lost their best corner, pass rusher, and their offensive line is nowhere near as good as it used to be. And they have a new coach without a true offseason.

Why? The general thought is they overpower people with options offensively. And the coach is deferring to the play caller who stayed on board.

They had the number 1 offense last year in the regular season and still went 8-8. The defense got worse this year.

They have weapons but they don't have a top 5 QB either.

They arguably or undoubtedly got better in coaching, so that has to amount for something.

And the banking on them improving is built on a belief that you're wrong on the last statement.

so we are assuming the coach is the reason why Dak wasn't playing up to hit potential despite a top 5 running, top 5 receiving core, and top 5 offensive line?

I'm not doubting the coaching will be better. It's not a guarantee. Yes he won a super bowl but he has a hall of fame qb and only got there one time.

The defense is going to be below average just based off last year being middle of the road along with losing their best corner and arguably their best pass rusher. They cut Ha Ha Clinton Dix who was signed to be their starting safety and Sean Lee is on the IR again.

I think the Texans will be okay. I wouldn’t read too much into that loss. They showed promise. I think their receiving core is solid but it’s just fragile. If cooks and fuller were to stay healthy I think their offense will start cookin

    RE: cowboys coaching changes

Why does it seem to be a general consensus that McCarthy is going to make Dak and/or the Cowboys offense better when it was also general consensus that McCarthy is the reason the Packers offense and/or Rodgers got stale and struggled? This confuses me greatly.

I'm not bending over backwards to defend the point, but its not really that asinine. That's all it really boils down to me.

a change of personnel, front office and roster can do a lot to get some things unstuck.

I might be just slightly overreacting but I cannot imagine a reality where the Packers don't go 19-0 this season and win the the next 6 consecutive super bowls

Not sure how long Mitch will last after that stupid sack and fumble he took.

Why he decided to run backwards I'll never understand.

Very much like the Titans for the division, 2020 Rivers isn't the upgrade on Brissett that they think he is, though they will be fun to watch.

Cam Newton looked good and moved the ball steadily. What a weapon he is in the run game.
