Oh I dont mean just the value. It just seems like it's always Bill making the trades every year. He's so patient. No coach could make themselves trade out year after year like he does.

I hate these four day drafts. I stop caring by the 14th pick and don't bother to watch Saturday.

Goes to show how much SEC schools, Clemon, Ohio State and Clemson dominate the scene nowadays. One mid major first rounder so far. Of course, it's not as bad as that year Miami had 11 guys go in the first round.

Our pass rush sucks but if they take Cleveland I won't blame them.

The packers pick doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, surely rodgers has 3 years left in him. When the pats picked Jimmy G it was after a season in which Brady posted a passer rating of 87 so you could at least see a case that he was in decline. Rodgers still seems on his game. Similar timing though, I think Brady was also 36 at the time. Hopefully for the packers Rodgers will respond to it as Brady did

(Jimmy was also about 30 picks later)

Ohio State got a massive recruiting uptick from this draft. Ravens got another beast.

A beast that needs to gain some weight or else get flattened by Henry.

Sometimes it works out, sometimes not. His results are pretty average for the league I’d say (taking into consideration they always start with late picks). Usually the logic is the guy (or guys) they want will still be there at the lower spot.

They dropped to 37 here so that’s still a high pick, they dropped like 14 spots I think.

And to be fair they stuck at 32 last year and stuck at both their 1st rounders the year before. But certainly you’re right he loves to move around (more often down). He’ll make at least 2 trades tomorrow, easy.

If Tua ends up getting injured this will be a horrendous draft for the Dolphins.

Tua can salvage it, but the other picks I can't convince myself. You have 3 first round picks and end up drafting 2 second rounders.

Lots of interesting stories off of the first night but I have to imagine Green Bay's pick is going to get the most steam over the next few days.

    Not a very logical pick.

Green Bay is the only NFC team I've ever cared for and I love Rodgers but he's def gotten to that point where he wants to throw it away way too much and his playoff performances have gone to shit the last several appearances. I can see why they'd want to start slowly grooming the next guy.

I am ready for the drama especially considering Chicago won't do shit this year, I need something to take pleasure in

Miami played is there thinking we won’t mind those other 2 picks cos we drafted Tua.

Belichek's strength hasn't been with the draft, though they've done pretty well considering they've generally started toward the end of each round because they've been so good at what counts, the actual games. And they've lost several picks over the years, which impacts their overall draft class.

But where Bill really shines is his nerve to get rid of top players before a sharp decline sets in, and especially his ability to pick up players that get released from other teams, and he finds a way to get the most out of them.

Overall, I enjoyed what I watched of the draft. When you see the sharp distinction in the homes of the execs/owners vs. the shack I live in, it's clear that the rich lead a completely different life.

Pretty fun response by Mike Vrabel about what was going on in his home during the draft. He seems like a pretty cool guy.

I do. He's versatile in a multiple front and can be schemed up with a lot of experience playing de/dt games at tcu. Super competitive and downhill.

Bit of an injury concern with an acl in 2018, but his 2019 performance has done lots to offset that.

    No disappointment at all here.

Bears now got 10 TEs on their current roster including Kmet

    Plus they're still paying Burton.

Kmet is a stud. As a Notre Dame fan, I'm quite pleased with the Steelers WR pick. Now if they can pull off that Fortane trade from the Jags and the offense will be massively better.

So I read that Jameis is now slotted to be around 52 for contract money for QBs at $1.1m with his deal with the Saints.

That's less than the likes of Beathard, Daniel, Sudfeld, Peterman, Rush, Keenum, Mariota and many, many more.

A terribly erratic qb who's still young and arguably talented enough to reestablish himself as a starter in the league getting paid a mill to take a one year qb course from Sean Payton, Pete Carmichael, and Drew Brees..

sounds like a sign of maturity..

    good for him..

Value in Winston if there's 3 seconds on the clock and you're 50-60 yards from the end zone too, particularly if Brees' arm strength is getting weaker.

God, I cannot imagine how many Pats haters across the country will want to die even more when Jarrett Stidham leads us to a 12 win season, another division title, a first round bye, and another Super Bowl.

Agreed. I'm very happy the Colts got him in the 4th. They had a pretty good draft.

I think Cam's best bet is to stay a free agent and wait on the first QB injury. The Titans, for example, don't really have an able deputy behind Tannehill. Do the Lions have anybody behind Stafford?

Which do you think is more cost-effective for a team in that situation: whatever it costs to sign Cam or a 2nd/3rd?
If it's the money, you pick Cam.
If it's the pick, you probably pick someone like Dalton.

easier said than done. if that opportunity doesn't come then sitting out his 31 year old season is tough, who knows what he'll get offered next year. and if it does come, it's tough to get up to speed with a team if the season has already started. very tough.

My mistake. Belichek wanted Johnny Foxboro, the local high school quarterback, not Joe Foxboro.

Stuff like this is why I don't think Brady will be as successful without Bill. It remains to be seen whether Tom will perform well without him.

Good shout on the Belichick quote. Brady has always been tough enough to be treated as just another one of the guys by Belichick and that’s why they lasted so long together. Most other QBs if they reached the pinnacle of the sport wouldn't have stuck around as long with that kind of treatment, I reckon.

Brady certainly doesn't need that anymore though, he's extremely self motivated and dedicated. It's probably unfair to use his age 43 and older seasons as a judgment of whether he can be successful without Bill but were it not for this damn Covid I'd full expect him to come out firing this year and be an almost certain Pro Bowler (I'd say All Pro but Mahomes and Jackson make that a tall task). I still expect that, but the likely cancellation of OTAs and shortened training camp could cause a slower start.

I would think if only one makes it, it's Tampa. I think there's a relatively decent chance that both can, though.

They were 7-9 and had a DPOY candidate as the QB. As long as Brady hasn't hit the fan with his talent, they should be right in the thick of it for a playoff spot.

Jameis threw A TON of picks, don't get me wrong.

But he also led the league in pass attempts, passing yards, and came in 2nd in passing TDs in order to keep them competitive. It's basically a wash when you consider all the INTs I guess. But while Brady won't throw those picks, I don't think he'll match the attempts/yards/TDs either.

More concerning to me though is the poor OL and invisible running game in TB that will likely be huge obstacles for an aging QB (only three teams averaged fewer rushing yards per carry, and only four QBs were sacked more than Winston). They spent their first pick on a top OT prospect, and then their 3rd selection on a RB, but it will be interesting to see if those two players make immediate improvements to their respective positions from a year ago.

I mean, he doesn't need to make wholesale changes to match the yardage and everything in order to make it a wash. He just needs to be competent and not cripple both sides of their team. Gronk is probably some form of insurance as a blocker, also helping with the first-round lineman.

That's assuming Gronk is the same TE he was before retiring, losing a bunch of weight and getting a taste of post-NFL life without the discipline that made him what he was. Maybe he will be as good (or even better in the new environment). But I just see a lot of variables and have very meager expectations is all.

He was a better blocker than pass catcher down the stretch in New England so even a drop-off in that department (and working as a decoy) should be a welcomed addition to Tampa.

I think a year off will have done Gronk a lot of good physically and I expect him to be more effective in 2020 than he was in 2018. Having Godwin and Evans pulling secondaries away from him won’t hurt either.

Gronk should still be a capable blocker, and help Brady as a known entity in a year where prep will be down. Nobody would still want to lay too much money on him playing 16 games.

New England should be able to make the playoffs. I'm not sure Buffalo replicates last season, so they've got a reasonable shot at their division, and the expansion to 7 teams in each conference helps their odds.

I also like Tampa to make the play-offs. New Orleans will win the division, but TB should get better as the season progresses.

Buffalo hinges Allen's development, to me. Feels like even with a year-to-year turnover that they're still pretty skilled defensively and hoping for some general growth on offense.
It feels like they were built rather well and Diggs is a move you make if you're feeling you're on the right track to make a move.

Pass interference replay is dead. They changed the rule for one year because of a bad call in the NFCCG and then realized it was dumb and are not bringing it back. Maybe if that call goes the other way the saints beat the pats in the super bowl so I’m not complaining. But as for the rule, yes it was a bad idea from the start.

It was so fucking weird because they had the ability to challenge it but it had to be so egregious that challenging it was almost always a waste.

    This.

When they weren't upholding challenges, that according to the language of the rule, that they should have, it became clear that this was a one-year experiment doomed from the start.

Guess we have to wait for another egregious non-call, in a highly visible spot with dramatic implications, for this to get brought up again and maybe done right.

Well see I preferred the challenge of PI being used only on egregious mis-calls not normal mis-calls because like holding, if you called it by the book on review then there could be countless overturns each game. If you guys are saying you would like them to keep the rule in place and overturn more calls by the letter of the law, I disagree. That hurts the game more than it helps it in my opinion.

I think you're right, letter of the law would of hurt the game. I do think the bar was a bit too high though.

I guess in my head I thought there was a better way you could do it. Overturn a few more calls but still let the guys play.

Would of been a delicate balance and you risk setting a precedent with every overturbed call. Probably best they got rid of it.

PFF50: The NFL's 50 best players entering the 2020 season

    1. DI AARON DONALD, LOS ANGELES RAMS

No matter how good you think Aaron Donald is, you’re underselling it. He is the best player in the NFL by a distance, and only the fact that his position doesn’t impact a game as heavily as quarterback or even receiver makes that in any way a debate. Since entering the league, Donald owns the best pressure rate, the best pass-rush win rate (factoring in wins at the line that don’t result in pressures), the best PFF pass-rushing grade and the most total pressures. He has done all this from an interior alignment on the defensive line, where pressure is harder to come by than on the edge. The gap between Donald and the next-best interior player is bigger than it is between any other player and the rest of his peers, and he remains atop this list for the fourth-straight year.

    2. QB PATRICK MAHOMES, KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

If there’s a player who has a hope of rivaling Donald as the best in the league regardless of position, it’s likely Mahomes. What we’re seeing from the young quarterback has never been done before — not necessarily statistically, but stylistically. His feel for the game and ability to make special plays as a passer is absurd. Since Mahomes entered the league, his PFF passing grade on third-and-long alone is 91.4, and his passer rating is 125.3 — comfortably the best in the league. Nobody can do what Mahomes can right now, and 2020 should bring about an even better version than last year if he stays healthy.

    3. WR JULIO JONES, ATLANTA FALCONS

Julio Jones is the most productive pass-catcher in football at a time when that skill has never been more valuable. Over the past three seasons, Jones leads all receivers in yards per route run, a statistic he led the NFL in for four straight years. Over almost any time span you choose, he is the league’s leader in receiving yards gained and has now had five straight years with a PFF grade above 90.0, with the three seasons preceding those above 80.0. Jones is the best receiver in the NFL, and he climbs further up the all-time lists with each passing season.

    4. G QUENTON NELSON, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Quenton Nelson is the rare player who brings everybody together. Whether you study tape exclusively, data exclusively, dots exclusively or any combination thereof, everybody agrees Nelson is a superstar. In just his second season in the league, he earned a 91.2 overall PFF grade, didn’t surrender a sack and was a dominant force as a run-blocker. Nelson was a bona fide star early in his college career, and there’s a good chance he could get even better in 2020 and beyond.

    5. TE GEORGE KITTLE, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Over the past decade, five of the top seven single-season PFF grades at tight end belong to Rob Gronkowski, but the grade George Kittle racked up last season tops any of them. Kittle, like Gronk, is an elite receiver at the position while also a rare blocker who becomes a matchup problem because he can dominate smaller players in that facet just as easily as he can win in the passing game. Last season was his first truly dominant year, but it was so good that it’s tough not to rank him this highly based on what the future could hold.

    6. WR MICHAEL THOMAS, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Michael Thomas sometimes gets dismissed as a top receiver because he doesn’t get deployed or utilized the same way some of the other top players do, but that shouldn’t detract from his dominance. Since Thomas entered the league, nobody else comes close to the number of first-down catches he has, and only Julio Jones has generated more yards per route run. Thomas is the NFL’s ultimate chain-mover, and even though teams know exactly what he’s going to do, almost none come close to stopping him.

    7. QB RUSSELL WILSON, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Russell Wilson made it only to No. 33 in PFF’s All-Decade 101 list, but he has taken his game to another level over the past couple of seasons. In 2019, it was Wilson — not Lamar Jackson — who led all players in PFF WAR (wins above replacement) and had the second-best overall PFF grade. Over the past three years, Wilson has 27 more big-time throws (PFF’s highest-graded passes) than any other passer, while 12 quarterbacks have more turnover-worthy plays than him. Wilson is held back only by how little his own team puts the ball in his hands.

    8. QB LAMAR JACKSON, BALTIMORE RAVENS

Though Russell Wilson had a higher PFF WAR figure than Lamar Jackson in 2019, Jackson was a very worthy NFL MVP. He is a unique talent who gives defenses nightmares as they work to contain both his passing threat and rushing ability, and he is the cornerstone that allows the Ravens to build a custom offense tailored to his talents. Jackson may well reinvent the quarterback position and, at the very minimum, will be one of the hardest players to limit as long as he continues to play at this level.

    9. WR DEANDRE HOPKINS, ARIZONA CARDINALS

What DeAndre Hopkins has been able to do in his NFL career with the quarterbacks he’s worked with, outside of Deshaun Watson, has been remarkable. He should be able to maintain strong quarterback play heading into 2020 with a new team and Kyler Murray under center. Over the past three years, no receiver has a higher PFF receiving grade than Hopkins’ 93.7 mark, and he has the fourth-most contested catches — all while dropping just 11 passes on 469 targets.

    10. RB CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY, CAROLINA PANTHERS

Christian McCaffrey is the perfect running back for today’s NFL. One of the few players with the skills to line up as a wide receiver but also repeatedly carry the ball between the tackles, he has been the Panthers’ offense for the past couple of seasons. In 2019, he touched the ball 403 times from scrimmage, racking up over 2,000 yards and breaking 65 tackles along the way. It marked the second consecutive year he had more than 100 receptions, and his 116 catches were the most by a running back in NFL history.

Drew Brees joins a long list of celebrities that can't stop themselves from saying something that's going to piss off their fanbase. Even teammate Michael Thomas and Lebron James were on his ass.

Check out teammate Malcolm Jenkins' response to Brees. "I can't let this slide" and "You're part of the problem". Jenkins and the other players around the league would be hypocrites if they ignored Brees' comments here.

I don't think Brees is a bad guy, but he's just wrong on this. And he's attempted to walk part of it back, but since there's nothing else going on in football, this is getting a lot of attention.

Brees has issued a pretty heartfelt apology. He's listening now. I wonder if he will take a knee now along with other players, and encourage the whole team - and perhaps the few fans they allow in a mostly empty stadium, to join in taking a knee during the national anthem. Because this isn't about the Flag and the Anthem.

It feels like, symbolically at least, Brees taking a knee during the anthem now would be pretty huge..

All of this makes me wonder if Kaepernick may get signed.

I doubt he will given his stance on the matter (pun intended), but it would be a nice gesture.

Percs right. Colin doesn't want to get signed. And I'm not slighting him. He just doesn't want that role. And good for him. I think he can do a lot more in other areas of life.

But you don't show up to a "workout" for the NFL wearing what he wore because you're SO interested in coming back and playing football for the league that turned it's back on you and your cause.

You do it because you want to make a statement and get some eyeballs on you to further a message. Which again, is fine. I happen to agree with that message for the most part and I'm happy to see Colin continue to be a voice on these issues.

Right.. i meant zero disrespect toward Kaep or his message, just in terms of him really really wanting to be a full time nfl qb again.. and the likelihood of him beginning that career again as a backup..

Given all the previous reports it didn't exactly add up to that being the case..

Initially he was 100% blackballed from any position which he would have accepted at the time.

These days I don't think he'd take anything but a starting position which is not a realistic expectation anymore.

haha my phrasing probably distorted my question.

you guys really believe kaep doesnt want to be an NFL QB? I mean at this point after being blackballed for so many years he might be past it but that seems like a pretty false or presumptive thing to say. the workout was complicated, I won't claim to know what was going on there except to say I don't think it proves he doesn't want to be signed. that's for sure what the NFL wants you to think, and what the NFL wants you to think is usually far from the truth.

When I hear blackball I tend to think of a sort of collusionary exclusion of a candidate from a membership.. and I'm not sure that's what really happened with Kaep.

It seemed to me that team owners, without necessarily meeting and agreeing with one another, each came to their own conclusions that signing Kaep to be a potential face of your franchise just didn't total up to be worth it.. he wasn't good enough to outweigh the distraction.. and to be clear I don't mean he's not good enough to be an NFL qb, and I don't mean the 'distraction' in this case was without merit.. just that from any one particular owner or another who may have considered signing Kaep throughout that time they didn't deem the totality of his talent vs extracurriculars to be quite enough on the positive side of the ledger..

Maybe though they did all call one another and collectively agreed he couldn't join their club but I just kinda doubt it.
