I appreciate that but still... I don't like it. Wins should be earned. Losses, okay maybe they can be assigned in these circumstances.

Imagine the Jets are playing the Patriots in the final week. The Patriots forfeit due to covid. The Jets lose the top draft pick and miss out on Trevor Lawrence. The Jets neither deserve that win nor want it.

Now imagine the Eagles are playing at Kansas City. KC forfeits. The Eagles are awarded a win in a game they were 9 point underdogs for. They win the division over the Cowboys by a half game.

Yuck. Cancel games? Sure. Adjust the standings due to missed games? No thanks.

Fine the teams (a/k/a owners). Fine the coaches and players if applicable. If the players go have a rogue practice outside of the facility, they could be fined. If the team practices don't follow the rules, the head coach could be fined since he is responsible for that. So it depends on the circumstance whether coaches and/or players would be eligible for fines.

I suggested 5th or 6th round picks but it again depends on circumstance. If the players go rogue outside of the facility should the team lose a pick? Probably not fair in my view unless the coaches participated. Now if the coaches ran an illegal practice outside of the facility then sure, dock them a 1st rounder in that circumstance. It really depends on where and how the violation occurred. It's hard to take draft picks away for what the players do in their personal lives or outside of the organization.

I agree with all of this.

A loss as a severe punishment in this nuts season where games can't be made up I can get. Giving unearned victories with potentially huge ramifications I can't.

If all else fails scheduling-wise and a team(s) has to finish with 15 games played and we determine standings on win pct then so be it.

No argument but if they're an outlier, they need to be punished substantially. If you're able to adjust the schedule/calendar to avoid it, that's fine. Forfeitures can be a last-case resort, but they should be considered if other things can't be adjusted.

Clearly everyone upset with the Titans for practicing at a local high school even after being told not to by the league simply hate freedom and don't love America.

Trump just had covid and he's even bigger and stronger now. He was already jacked like Hulk Hogan so now he could like, eat a full grown man while doing power squats with a buick on his back.

Pffft. Don't matter anyway. Q just said Biden, Pelosi and Obama will be caught eating live babies within the hour.

Full ban on masks in TN!

    Vote for Marsha Blackburn!

(For God's sake just shut down the league for a week ot two. People won't forget the NFL exists)

Oh and as for the Titans story, it may not be what it seems. The story was broken by Paul Kuharsky, a jounalist that lives in Nashville and used to work for ESPN and now does a radio show and podcast here in town. A smart guy and always starving to land a story, he reported on the group of Titans players that practiced on Weds. Weds was also the same day that the edict came down from the league saying no practice of any kind. According to some Titans players the "workout" may have actually taken place before any of the players were informed of the rule.

So this may just be a case of a reporter that jumped the gun before he knew all the facts and a league that wants badly to look like they are stopping this wildfire by pissing on it.

    From pft:

There’s buzz in league circles of possible “historic” punishment for the Titans given the various violations.... the NFL could soon make past punishment imposed on the Patriots seem like parking tickets.

Seems like a stretch to me...

The word "historic" was used by an off the record league source aparrently. And whatever draft pick they take away will be fought for in arbitration I'd think.

Honestly I don't care. The NFL can try and make an example out of the Titans all they want. They need to be focused on the future. Because more outbreaks, just like this one, are going to happen.

The Titans didn't infect Cam Newton. The Titans likely won't be the cause of the next massive outbreak. Which will happen. We all discussed this at length before the season. The nature of the game is going to lead to outbreaks. Period

There's no arbitration for penalties imposed against the team. The teams and owners are legally forbidden from taking up suit against the league, from what I recall from my degree in deflategate law. Players have their union and arbitration and the courts. Teams give up their rights when they gain entrance to this billionaires club.

I think the "parking ticket" line is massive hyperbole by Florio, though. I mean the penalties against the Patriots were major so I don't see how this penalty would dwarf those. If they gave the same level of penalty then that would be an overreaction, in my view, and I agree with your points above. Docking them a 1st round pick would be very extreme UNLESS it's discovered that the Titans coaches/organization facilitated or encouraged the high school field practice. If the players did that on their own, which at this moment is my assumption, then I don't think the team deserves that punishment. If the team nudged them to practice on their own, then I could see the hammer being thrown at them because that would be some serious reckless malpractice.

I think, at best, what they will have evidence of, is that Titans players, knowingly went against the rules by setting up an outside practice without league permission. There won't be anything that shows the Titans organization pushed them to do so. So the punishments will need to be at the player level. Not at the organizational level. But that's just my feeling.

Yeah if they go above deflategate punishments (god that's still the dumbest shit ever) that would feel like an extreme overreaction. But perhaps the league feels like that's what is called for to get everyone's attention and prove they're serious. Brady got 4 games for playing with a kinda-sorta funny football. So we know the NFL can go crazy with discipline when they think they need to look strong on an issue.

If so. Fine. If the Titans didn't want to be the example then they should have done a better job making sure everyone knew what was what. I just hope the league understands that punishing the Titans isn't going to be the end of the covid problem. No matter what that punishment is.

Because I'm not just a Titans fan. I'm a football fan. And I don't want this season to just spiral out of control where it no longer feels like anything close to respectable, competitive, reasonably fair football.

They need to look into a possible pausing of the season for a week or two if even one more team starts having issues this week. And be ready to pause again later on if needed. Stamp this shit down before it fucking explodes. They need to understand that rules and punishments and all the like won't be enough. This shit is gonna pop up over and over again. Nature of the game and all that.

Titans should get the NCAA death penalty, except for an NFL team. No draft picks or playoffs for 4 years. Cap space and television revenue share reduced by 30%. No television time and no MNF or SNF games. Owner gives up right to run team and may be forced to sell the team. All current coaching and front office staff will be replaced and number of assistant coaches will be reduced.

    Only way! Gwaar!

    This.

The players involved in the illegal practises should be punished by being suspended for, I dunno, let's make it 4 weeks. I don't think an outright forfeit of the games works, as why should the Bills get a win if the Steelers didn't and that game was postponed? I'm not a huge fan of Big Ben (mostly for his off the field stuff) but Pittsburgh has gotten the short end of the stick already, they've lost their bye week by practising all week only to be told "nope" see ya later.

If the Titans organized or encouraged the team practise they deserve to be punished, and hard. They should get their coach(es) suspended as well, along with fines, and a loss of draft picks. If the Pats did this, how many people would be calling Belichek a cheater for it?

What I am not hearing about are the alleged violations of protocol, etc. that may have contributed to so many in the Titans organization getting the virus. I am sure the league is investigating this as it is very suspicious as to why so many contracted the virus.

So far, Goodell has been pretty much making the right calls when it comes to COVID. But he has a long way to go. I suspect they may be playing the Super Bowl in March this year

Basically a coach on the Titans staff tested positive and seemed to have infected many players and other staff. About half of these positive tests are Titans staff not players and there are lots of coaches only meetings situations where it's all coaches in one small room so that's how they know it pretty much started with him.

Then you have to take into account that it's TN. Masks are taking away our freedom and all that. The bars and restaurants have been open for a while. It's just a shitshow down here right now.

I think this is the basic argument here. The memo is from oct 1st and the "practice" was sept 30th.

Paul Kuharsky claims the NFL verbally told the Titans on the 29th. Turron Davenport disagrees and says they weren't told until the 1st.

That still has potential of rewarding the team no? Say the Titans are battling the Colts for the division and playoff spot. Colts are 9-7 with the tiebreaker. Titans are 9-6. They get the spot for not having to play a tough game on their schedule?

Again, this season is not going to be "fair" to everyone. No matter what, somebody is going to feel like they got fucked some which way at the end of all this.

Further reporting is saying that the Titans players did know they weren't supposed to practice before the 30th. But who knows? It all feels weird. I mean if thats the case then why were they practicing out in the open in front of the media?

At any rate, I now fully expect the hammer of doom to get dropped on the Titans, for now. I still don't think this will be the last outbreak of it's kind this season and eventually the NFL will realize this was all going to happen anyway. Somwhere to somebody.

Isn't that what MLB did for the Cardinals and the Marlins? I know it isn't a perfect comparison with 60 games instead of 16.

Titans-Bills moved to Tuesday unless there are more positive (cough cough) tests (cough) before then. Which could easily happen of course because everyone in TN has covid right now.

Gotta admit, I honestly thought it was 3rd down on the final incompletion too.

No idea what was so misleading or causing my stupidity but I can't even get point a finger at the goat for whatever reason on that one.

Wow. Raiders whipped the Chiefs collective asses.

I'm not picking the Cowboys to win ever again. 14-3 right now.

Gutted for Dak. In a contract year no less. Hopefully he will be ready to go for the 2021 opener.

Hate the Cowboys with a passion, but Dak seems like a nice guy and this totally sucks for him. I guess if Alex Smith and Teddy Bridgewater can come back, anything is possible.

And the Browns have the same record after week 5 as the defending champs. 4-1. Amazing.

Good win, but it's sadly looking like it might not be that impressive come season's end.

In what way? We ain’t going payoffs yes so obviously you look back at your wins and I’m pretty sure this has a good shout at being out best win of the season.

Justin Herbert has arm talent to rival Mahomes.

Mahomes has more off-balance athelticism, but just standing in a tiny box and launching with their arms with velocity and accuracy.. Herbert is effin up there.

Agreed. That team is now only a few pieces away from being really good.

In fact the AFC west looks like it's about to become an utter bitch to deal with by next season.

Because saying you defeat a team that went to the Super Bowl the previous season sounds good, but the Niners might be falling off the rails. I'm just saying the name might sound better than the actual team.

Ok I didn't get to pay much attention to the game when it was live but there was def a team that looked like half the team has covid and nobody has practiced in two weeks.

Thanks for taking it easy on us Bills. Seriously what the fuck was that? I KNOW that wasn't Buffalo's best effort. I mean I'll take the 4-0 start but it really feels like we played a team that thought we weren't going to show up. So thanks for the win Buffalo. Oh and don't think there wasn't anything in it for you because....

In other news, the Jets released Le'Veon Bell after nobody would take on his contract in a trade.

Dolphins SM at the minute is about a 0-4 Herbert & a 5-0 Tannehill, it’s hilarious.

I read different things. My understanding is that he has a 6 million base that the Jets have to eat, so any team that signs him can get him for the vet minimum. The problem with a trade is that teams would have had to take on the 8 million injury guarantee for next year.

Teams can take him after 4:00 PM Eastern. I think he still has value in the right situation.

Cam Newton returning to practise for the Patriots, and is expected to start this weekend. So the forced bye with some practise squad player testing positive allowed Cam to get cleared. How did Belichek manage that?

And the Falcons are next to shut down the team facilities for COVID

RIP to Hall of Famer Fred Dean, who passed away from COVID. When I was a teenager first watching the NFL, he was one of the guys who made highlight reels, bowling through the line. He recorded 93 sacks in 82 starts.

Sounds like there is just one positive test for the Falcons. The game is still on against the Vikings on Sunday, pending test results of everyone else.

Low risk, high reward move for an already dangerous offense. Only major concern is if he instantly destroys chemistry in the locker room. I doubt that happens though.

The fact his behavior could be a cancer on the locker room upgrades it from a Low risk imo. The potential reward, and still having CEH if Bell doesn't work out, mitigates that risk though.

I mean, he's not being brought in as a cure-all though. He can help but there's still other issues in play. The issue really isn't CEH. It's more their O-line and the backs behind CEH.

I just mean the attitude. The second he starts in with his normal bullshit and shit stirring then it's over for him. This isn't the Jets. No GM who just HAD to have him here.

I guess I'm missing stuff in terms of a sustained history of saltiness or attitude over a long period of time where he's the driving force. That didn't seem to be the case in Pittsburgh. He just wanted his money. He got it but then it got hostile in a hurry in Gotham. The regime changed and things never got going between Gase and Bell. Clearly not a case where Bell is infallible as he stirred the pot but there's two sides that lead to an inauspicious union. There's enough data there to show Gase is a cancer and you get dramatically better when you're away from him, so Bell gets the benefit of the doubt from me.

You are right though that this isn't the Jets. It's better. He just needs to be on his best behavior and ball as best as he can so he can continue to make the most of what is left of his career.

In Pittsburgh the “drama” was about Bell getting the guaranteed money that the Steelers weren’t interested in paying, he got it when he signed in New York. It turns out the Jets are a trainwreck organization and Gase is an incompetent dumbfuck in way over his head, so no shock that Le’Veon wasn’t impressed.

Landing in KC Bell gets the chance to compete with CEH as the #1 option out of the backfield on a loaded Super Bowl favorite; if he balls out and stays down for the next ~3 months, he probably gets paid again. Fun fact, the Jets visit the Chiefs November 1st.

FYI, the Dak Prescott injury means that we really need to stop criticizing athletes, NFL players in particular, for holding out during contract negotiations. Get that paper, yo.

    Houston up 30-29.

They score a touchdown with less than two minutes to go.

36-29 and extra point makes it an 8 point lead. They go for two. They fail. It stays 36-29. Titans score a touchdown and make the extra point. Score tied 36-36. Overtime. Derrick Henry is a rampaging beast. Titans win 42-36.

    What the fuck?

    -------

Patriots lacks of offensive weapons really starting to show.

Going for 2 made sense for the analytics. Score and it's a 2 point game, miss and the Titans still need to score a TD and a PAT. Kick a PAT and the difference between a Gostowski FG (given his game) and forcing the Titans into 2 was negligible at best. It just didn't work because the play wasn't good enough, then Tannehill had the drive of his life. Then Derrick Henry does that in overtime but the Texans could easily have won the toss against a D that couldn't get them off the field in the second half. I was impressed enough by the Texans but the Titans playmakers on offence were awesome. They're fun to watch. We can't get to the QB so we're going to need 25 points a game generally but that doesn't appear to be an issue. The second back having a game is huge, this will be a long season so if we can limit Henry's carries on the back 9 that would be preferable. Steelers game next week will be a cracker.

    Analytics are wrong

You go up 8 and then bet the Titans can't convert a 2 pt conversion. That's just what you do. It's HARD to convert a 2 pt and even if they do manage to somehow do it. The score is tied. You didn't even lose the game.

    --------

Thank God Green Bay sucked today. It's been too long since I've been able to say Matt LeFleur sucks. Because he sucks. Don't care if they win the super bowl. He sucks.

Tampa won with defense and Brady being magic when he needed to be. Its more like the bucs are turning into the Pats then it is Brady becoming a Bruce Arians "no risk it no biscuit" guy.

Good. They'll win more this way.

Titans are in beast mode, Derrick Henry is a monster. But a shame OT Taylor Lewan is looking like he'll be done for the year with an ACL. Tough blow to their offense.

The Patriots had some unfortunate turnovers or else they probably would have pulled it out. They were missing lots of guys going into the game due to Covid and then lost a starter from their O-line and D-line early in the game. That plus 2 practices in 2 weeks made this a tough performance. 2-3. Blah. Gotta win next week vs the Niners, don't want to get into too much of a hole. They had no downfield passing attack today. Same problem as last year. They need better pass catchers desperately. I have to think a trade is coming, but they are probably weary of repeat of last year's Sanu trade.

The Bucs spanked the Packers which was fun.

Eagles were right in the game with the Ravens. Played them so tough. Almost completed a huge comeback despite having two starters left on offense (Kelce and Wentz). It's unreal what Wentz was able to do to be able to score 28 pts on one of the best defenses in the league. It's a different game if Sanders catches that touchdown. Facing 1-4-1 despite playing pretty well against the Steelers and Ravens. Injuries and bad play are huge reasons. Maybe they can still win the division and get some guys back healthy and see get lucky.

I initially didn't like the decision to go for two. It just felt a little greedy in the moment. But I don't know that that's a good reason. It's all gut.

In hindsight though I like it, even with the result. I don't know what any actual analytics say on that situation. I think people just substitute the word 'analytics' in for anything unconventional in football. But I do know that the difference in kicking the extra point or going for two boiled down to betting on the success rate of either Deshaun and our offense making a two-point play versus our trash ass defense stopping a two-point play. And if you watched any of that game prior the choice was easy. And the two-point play itself boiled down to Jeffrey Simmons making a heck of an impromptu play at the los to bat the pass down otherwise the game is over right there and it looks brilliant.

I can live with how that played out decision-wise. The defense though is unforgivable. Hats off to you guys just having a hulk.

I don't know how much they were right in the game over the course of the entire game. They were down 24-6 after 3. Just seems like Baltimore took their foot off the gas and Wentz did what he does...look like he's on the brink of being carted off only to show fight at the end. Whoever the strength and conditioning coach is for the Eagles is robbing them blind. The WR coach deserves a raise, but the S&C coach does not.

My Vikings are a disaster. The defense needs another year or two to rebuild. Our offensive line has been a mess for a decade, and Kirk is being Kirk. With his insane cap hit next year, he is here for another year at least (if the team is willing to eat $10 million in dead cap in 2022)

Zimmer will probably not make it to next season. I really wouldn't be surprised if he made it out of the bye week now. It sucks that Kirk and the cap hell will be a deterrent to potential head coaches. At least the Texans have Watson to draw in a potential coach, even if they don't have any picks.

Seeing Mattison play so well against Seattle probably led to a big gulp from management in regards to Cook, but they already had to know they had capable backs. They were just too committed to Cook to walk away.
Cousins is definitely a problem. He doesn't strike me as a guy who is going to lift the surrounding talent but he needs the surrounding talent to lift him and even then...it can be a crap shoot.

Justin Jefferson is killing it on my fantasy team though. On pace for 1,400 yards as a rook, not too shabby.

Seattle has an awful run defense though, and that is why he did so well last week. I know Atlanta isn't much better, but they were clearly prepped for Mattison. He is a good backup running back. 5-10 carries a game is where he can be a nice change of pace.

It seems like the Jets will get Lawrence by default. Maybe the VIkings can draft a Fields/Lance type of player and have him sit behind Cousins.

The defense should get better once Danielle Hunter and Anthony Barr come back next year. They signed Michael Pierce to be the nose tackle, but he opted out for the year. The secondary still needs a lot of work, so hopefully Gladney and Dantzler can take their lumps this year and improve.

Justin Jefferson does look like the real deal though. A win-win so far in the Diggs deal.

Mattison seems like a pretty capable back to me. He just didn't really have the opportunity to be able to run aggressively yesterday because the game got out of hand early. They're a very weird team this season. The timelines just don't mesh on both sides of the ball.

I was anticipating that Jimmy G would be out much longer, so the point no longer stands lol.

Passive aggressiveness isn't a good way to try to win over my fandom though lol.

Looks like there won't be any suspensions or loss of draft picks after the Titans emerged from the covidgate investigation. They'll have to pay some fines.

The league probably sent their best people and discovered that there is a fucking plague going on and the shit catches easy. News to them I'm sure.

That's not saying much because I think the Lions are extremely shitty. A couple wins won't convince me. Only a playoff birth would, which we both know is not going to happen.

Vikings trade Yannick Ngakoue to the Ravens for the 3rd and a 5th

A step down from the 2nd we traded to Jacksonville, but hopefully this is the start of a few trades. Anthony Harris could probably get a decent pick as well.

A lot of talk today about the rightness or wrongness of players screaming or yelling at the other guys on the team and when or who it's acceptable from.

I'll just note this. Tom Brady was scrutinized last week for absolutely going full "psycho Tom" on his o-line after they fucked up and got called for three straight flags while playing the Bears.

Well this past Sunday his line played the best game they've had all season. Turns out when you yell at full grown (giant) pro football players, they don't just curl into the fetal position and die. They actually try harder and do their best to live up to expectations.

Now when the argument turns to black players being less tolerated by fans for doing the same thing a milky white Tom Brady does. Yeah I can see that. It does seem like white rage is generally more acceptable to the public.

OBJ though. He's a reciever. White, black or brown, those dudes always think they should get more targets. So not really the same thing.

AB is a despicable human in my view. The biggest of assholes. But I was willing to overlook that when he signed with the Pats and I'm willing to overlook it now as he signs with my second favorite team. Can he stay on the field is the question, and I'm willing to bet he will this time. A fool's bet perhaps but he's seemingly served his suspension without getting into more recent trouble. If the NFL approves him to be reinstated for week 9, I think he can behave well enough to stick around. As for his abilities, I expect him to lose a step after his prolonged absence but not a big step. I think he'll still be great.

Evans Godwin Brown is a hell of a WR corp

Bucs are now NFC favorites in my view, after stomping the Packers (mostly with their defense) and this news.

More evidence that the Bucs have become Tom Brady's team. Not Arians.

And again. That's a good thing.

No risk it no biscuit lol. That's some college level offensive philosophy. Put that rock in AB's hands and watch the Bucs fucking steamroll the NFC. Feeling very confident in my NFC superbowl pick now.

The Niners and Patriots game is a big one tonight. With the Ravens and Rams to come, as well as Buffalo twice, it kind of feels like a must win game for New England already. If they're 2-4 going into travelling to Buffalo next week, with Buffalo surely entering 5-2, accounting for momentum and confidence, the season could be a write off by week 8. Win tonight and they carry hope into that game and it feels like the top clash it should be. Likewise the Niners, about to enter an absolute murderers row (Seahawks, Packers, Saints, Rams, Bills... yowza), they need to go into that plus .500. I wouldn't be convinced on either's play off prospects regardless, but I'd definitely count out the loser. Yet, both teams have the talent to make a run of it.

Titans vs. Steelers is big. I think both quite comfortably get to the playoffs, but it feels like a game where the true aspirations of both is on the line. I think the Steelers at the start would have taken a 10-6 season and a wildcard berth, whereas Tennessee likely too would have settled for that. It feels like this match, particularly if a resounding performance accompanies it, can have the winner run the Chiefs and Ravens close for a bye. The Steelers look that team this year, but we don't know when we're beat so it's going to be fun.

Agreed that this is a huge game for the Pats. I expect them to get back on track and come out with the W. The spread is only 2.5 the last I checked.

    Pats 2-4? I can’t see it.

I think the Pats will win but I could totally see them losing but still figuring something out down the line that leads to an 8 game win streak. The season is still pretty young and Bill is still learning to game plan with a totally different kind of qb than he's ever had.

This has been the most mistake-filled, goofy first half of Titans ball I've seen in forever. Dropped passes, botched punts, one time Tannehill threw a deep pass and 30 yds down the field the football turned into a pigeon in mid air and just flew away. Derrick Henry's head fell off and Mike Vrabel died.

Steelers 400 Titans 3 at the half.
