i can do a top 10-15 war films. Not sure about 25. There are movies like black hawk down etc that I don't think belong and just putting them as 25 doesn't mean shit. like what's the point? Top 10 seems to make more sense. why scramble for 25 movies when most of us probably don't even like the ones we are putting at 20-25? at least I won't.

assuming zero dark thirty counts as a war film?
How do you not consider Black Hawk Down a war movie? It's literally about war.

i mean it isn't a good movie for me. i get why some like it. i did not. if i had to do a top 25 list, I am just putting it on there for the hell of it.

Oh my bad I thought you were saying it didn't belong because it's not a war movie, you're saying it doesn't belong in a top 25...correct?

But that's the thing man. You could spin it that the reason you put it at the bottom of your list is because out of all the war movies you've seen, this was the worst lol. That's how I did it, I think I came up with 17 and what's at the bottom were decent but not awesome war movies.

I think people should just submit what they can. If you can get to 25 without including movies you haven't seen oh well. Like I said, I came up with 17, that was all I could realistically put on that list without bullshitting lol.

    Correct.

That's the thing though. I can create a top 10 list of action movies. Even number 10 is a great movie and I love it. Me doing a top 25 war movie list and including a war movie at 25 seems counterproductive. I know I am overthinking it but doesn't make much sense to do top 25 for this genre.

Honestly, I think for people like me and you it doesn't make much sense but then when you look @ the top 50 war movies on various sites, it's amazing how many war movies I haven't seen that I've heard of. I'm just not super into the genre but it's a gigantic genre. I mean I've never seen Hart's War, We Were Soldiers, Deer Hunter, these are huge movies. Thank God nobody born prior to 1960 doesn't post here or they'd easily be able to do a top 25 since their generation had 3 genres: War, War, and War.

This is not my favorite genre, but there are some pretty great films to pick from. It won't be hard to get 25 deserving films. What will be harder is ranking them.

    Sent my list.

Has anyone mentioned Glory yet? Great movie and it's in my top 3 war films.

And I don't think anyone mentioned All Quiet On The Western Front. I had to watch it and write a paper on it for college and I was blown away by that film.

Glory is amazing. I was young when I saw it and that was the first movie I saw Denzel in. He's been my favorite actor since then.

    And it's a true story.

Denzel Washington was great in it, won an Oscar for it. Matthew Broderick, who prior to this I only knew him in Ferris Bueler's Day Off. I dug it as a young kid but really appreciated it as an adult.

    Any more lists?

Got 11 so far, if we could get to 20 would be good. Will wait the weekend and start collating early next week?

For those of you who haven't seen it, don't read the spoiler. lol. I started reading it and I'm like, this is way too fucking long for a quick synopsis of what the movie is about.

I've heard it's great but not really my thing.

I think people were scared of the number 25. Pretty sure my list was only 17 but I promise you every one of them will be on this list lol. Except maybe 1.

Can't believe I left In The Army Now off my list.

Didn't see #25 but I struggle to make it through Clint Eastwood directed films, save for one or two. I remember working at a video store when this movie came out and people seemed to love it.

I always found it interesting how Eastwood made the two companion films, Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, showing the two sides of the same war. I don't think I've seen either of them, nor do I have a strong urge to watch them now, but I'd be interested in hearing from someone who has seen them both. Are there links between them or do they stand alone? This one clearly was the better received of the two.

I'm almost positive we watched this in middle school or high school. It was one of the first movies about the Civil War I can remember really enjoying. This and GLORY I think we watched in school. Very long, forgot it was also a miniseries which is why it's such a long movie (4 1/2 hours). Sam Elliot really stands out in this one in my memories.

First on the list I have seen and voted for.

Great film. I remember the cutting out the heart scene like it was yesterday. Brutal.

I think I left this one off my list unfortunately. That's one thing about these threads, you'll start seeing shit that you should have put on the list lol. This was a great movie. Daniel Day Lewis breakthrough performance without a doubt. From this day forward he was a made man in Hollywood.

Yeah this one wasn't on my list either purely because I forgot it. Great movie from beginning to end. Beautifully shot and the scenery was amazing.

I remember seeing Last of the Mohicans as a kid, knowing it was well acclaimed, but it didn't stick with me and I haven't seen it since. I remember being not impressed with it, but I should revisit it.

Films that came out before 1970 are dead to me.

You need to watch METROPOLIS from 1927. A completed version does not exist but it's pretty awesome.

Voted for this - saw it at the cinema, loved it. Need to see it again, but remember really enjoying and it opened my eyes that George Clooney was a great actor; ditto Mark Wahlberg.

Great flick. Thought it had everything I want in a movie: action, drama, suspense, comedy. I thought Ice Cube did a great job as I'd only seen him in the Friday movies and Anaconda up to that point. When it came out I worked in a video store and it was the movie I'd recommend to everyone who asked for at least six months.

The Dirty Dozen is a classic, and really showed how good Suicide Squad could have been, but just wasn’t because it didn’t have the courage to kill off most of the cast.

Three Kings I haven’t seen since it came out. It’s not one you see on the shelves at HMV so perhaps was a deleted title? I’d watch it again though.

I sure hope Rambo: First Blood: Part 1 counts as a war film.

Given the entire background of the character and the fact the original novel is written as a thinly veiled criticism of the Vietnam war.

Loved this. This was the first time I encountered Robin Williams, and I thought he was utterly, utterly, brilliant.

Good Morning Vietnam was #7 on my list. Great film and possibly my favorite of Williams' performances. He nailed it in every sense of the word. Had to look up the Oscar winner that year...it was Michael Douglas in Wall Street. That was a great performance as well so I can't hate too much.

Bridge On The River Kwai was #14. I actually didn't see it until I was in college and had to write a paper on it. Very well done.

Good Morning Vietnam made my list.

Robin Williams....He must have been a favorite of my grandparents because they rarely watched movies but I remember watching The World According to Garp and this one with my grandparents when I was very young. They would also watch a lot of Mork and Mindy reruns on Nick at Nite. AND they would watch those Comic Relief specials any time they were on (I think HBO?)

So this movie holds a special place for me. I don't think I ranked it in my top 10 as it wasn't as "war movie" as some of the others but either way, worthy of the list.

#9 on my list. Loved the scene where Gibson just walks up and cuts that dude's throat. Haven't watched this movie again in at least a decade so it's time for a
    re-watch.

Good movie. I remember my dad was very particular about this movie. Long story short my dad had to drop out of HS at the age of 15 to help his mom after his dad passed away. But he always told us about this report on William Wallace he did before he dropped out and how proud of it he was. So the whole time I remember him talking through it going "Oh this didn't happen" or "According to such and such this actually happened!"

Awesome movie and I can't recommend it enough. Only time I ever saw someone yak in a theater, it was the scene where the one guy had to grab the dude's leg vein to pinch it off.

This is one of those movies I get sucked into if it's on TV. All the performances were great.

This is why I didn't submit a list. I have seen ZERO so far from this countdown. Yup, not even Braveheart.

Now we are talking. This is one of my favourite films and probably Tom Cruise's greatest performance.

A fantastic film from start to finish.

Comedies should be interesting only because everybody has a different sense of humor. People who like Tootsie might not like Dumb and Dumber and vice versa.

It is a classic about the Normandy Invasion. Can get hammy at times, but it really gives a full showing of how that day went down.

Now this is a classic. Who doesn't love the 'Good luck' bit and Steve Mcqueen bouncing a ball against a wall.

The Longest Day is great. I think each separate story had its own Director. Plus its got an ageing John Wayne in it who gets a convenient ankle injury meaning he can pretty much sit down for the whole film.
There is this one really great single take crane shot (I assume its a crane) that follows this attack on a casino all along a water front that I remember being very good.
I've only seen the colourised version once, it just looked weird.
This is the sort of film that could really benefit from a remake as has been said the original is a little hammy and dated.
To get a similar level cast and scale though it'd probably end up being the most expensive film ever made.

Most of these sound boring as hell.

I saw Patton and it was awful. don't get the hype. it was painful

Dunkirk was good. As the description states, it was more about the sounds and spectacles of war rather than dialogue and characters, and that probably makes it less compelling for many viewers since we as humans naturally want to connect with the characters. But it was very well done. I haven't seen it since the theater but would like to circle back to it some point soon. It felt like it captured war in a pretty realistic way.

I think the issue was having it be 25 instead of 10 based on 2-3 people who thought it made sense. So not only are YOU doing all this extra work but people who want to contribute are either throwing shit on a list to fill it up or like me delivering 17 movies where 10 of them I probably saw once lol.

It was a good idea in theory because there are so many movies about war, just not everyone under the age of 50 seem to be that into them.

Kind of like if we did "Top 25 Westerns", how many of us born after 1980 even give a shit about Westerns? lol.

I can't remember if The Longest Day was on my list, if it's not it should have been I saw it a few times with my dad and I think step dad. One of the few "older" war movies I've seen that I thought was pretty damn good. Honestly this might have been the first John Wayne movie I REMEMBER watching as I'm sure I was a little kid with some older shit of his playing in the background.

Getting down to the big boys now - this is great and I voted for it.

The end is a bit silly, but the opening scene and Christopher Waltz in particular, is incredible.

Another one I really enjoyed. Need to see it again, probably Renners best work.

Inglorious is fucking glorious. Especially when your best friend is Jewish with a grandfather still alive that was in the Holocaust and all he (my friend) wanted to be was the Bear Jew lol.

Great acting, the violence was over the top at certain points but it's Tarantino so you knew it was going to be pretty colorful.

I have not seen The Hurt Locker. I have heard nothing but good to great things about it. Jeremy Renner, underappreciated actor imo.

    Two great films.

The opening scene in Inglorious and the scene in the restaurant with Waltz where he's talking about the cream on the coffee cake...both brilliantly acted.

Hurt Locker is possibly the only film I've seen in the theater where I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time. Awesome, awesome movie.

So far, only seen 2 films of the list and of those 2 only remember 1. Inglorious basterds was great. I saw Three Kings but couldn't tell you anything about it other than George Clooney and Ice Cube are in it.

The Hurt Locker was so, so good. The kind of sustained tension that would make Chris Nolan proud. And Renner was fantastic like has been said but it also introduced Anthony Mackie (funny now looking back and seeing Hawkeye and Falcon together), and really established Kathryn Bigelow as a must see director. Great stuff all around.

    Inglorious Basterds was pretty cool.
