    Top 25 War Films

    Happy New Year entertainment fans.

This seemed to be the most popular next choice to do when we discussed last year.

So top 10 war films, pretty straightforward in terms of rules I think? Will be based on real wars though so no Star Wars I'm afraid

    Who is in?

    Full list:-

Narrowing down to 10 is going to be tough, could easily just include WW2 and get that.
Can I have 20 films in my top 10?

I'd like to be part of this one but 25 is high for me because while I do enjoy war films, I'd be stretching the fuck out of what is considered a war film to make a 25 based on personal enjoyment.

    If it's 25 I'm down though.

I could do 25 if I factor in movies I don't care for but have respect. Like Hart's War type shit lol, I've never seen it but I heard it was the shit. Or some of those old ones from the 40's and 50's that my Dad would watch religiously.

How wide are we throwing the net here?

As an example, I'd have Starship Troopers on my list.

In all seriousness, to me when I think of war films I define that as films based on real historic wars. The plot can of course be fictional like Inglourious Basterds or Saving Private Ryan, but it has to be a real war. A fictional war like Star Wars or War for the Planet of the Apes wouldn't be considered war movies to me despite being about wars.

And I recommend just let people give up to their top 20, even if many people won't make it that far. Those movies ranked 15-20 will only be getting small point totals, it's fine to have some people giving top 10 and others top 20.

I agree on all of this. 99% of the population isn't going to respond with intergalatic fantasy war movies=top 20 war movies. If we open it up that wide you're going to start getting Lord of the Rings in the mix lol.

I'm already working on a list.

I'm up to about 30 right now, and that's excluding all the 40's-60's films that I can't give an honest accurate assessment of.

Also excluding some that I think will make the final cut like We Were Soldiers, The Thin Red Line, or Black Hawk Down that I just have never gotten around to.

Really, this is as robust a single category as we can dive into.

Yes it's sci-fi, but surely it's also an undeniable war film?

Structurally it follows the archetypal war film timeline and has every war film trope imaginable. The initial attack to spur the hero, the barrack training with hard asses who turn out to be the pals you need, the old training instructor who treats you like shit, the initial victory, the subsequent failure, the final battle to win it all. Not to mention the overriding sense of enforced patriotism.

    Also, Neil fucking Patrick Harris.

Jmo, but I think the films should be constrained to actual wars that have taken place.

Historical fiction within those wars is fine, ala Saving Private Ryan or Born on the Fourth of July, but still grounded in legitimate wars.

lol. Yeah but we don't know if there will be a war with Klendathu (however you spell it) in the 23rd century with our boy Johnny Rico leading the charge. I know for a Casper Van Dien didn't time travel with Jake Busey and Michael Ironside.

300 is just a fictionalized version of the real war. Some of these people actually existed.

Trust me, I want Starship Troopers and Star Wars on every list even comedies.

Random comment about 1917 but I know it's all single-shot (or rather fabricated single shot) and that seems like an unnecessary gimmick to me. I'm not saying it will detract from the movie, and for all I know Sam Mendes pulled it off in a super seamless way that will add to the movie... but like when it comes to Birdman, I love that movie for its merits (script, story, characters etc) and if it wasn't shot as a single-shot I don't think I would love it any less, or at most fractionally less. I do love single shot scenes like Scorsese does in Goodfellas and whatnot, but those are REAL single shots, not an edited together thing. I think when you edit an entire 2+ hours as a single shot it loses its cool factor and becomes more of a gimmick.

Do we consider Gladiator and Braveheart to be war movies? How about The Last Samurai?

And a hot take - Dunkirk was trash.

I would say no to Gladiator. Although it is about a warrior, the movie focuses on his imprisonment and gladiating, not the war.

Braveheart, while I haven't seen it in a while, is a yes. There's battle scenes and whatnot. Wikipedia calls it a war movie. Also The Patriot would qualify.

Dunkirk was not trash, but I agree it was a little overrated. It was a technical spectacle more than a compelling story in terms of character and dialogue, which is what he intended.

In the theater you barely could see any of the night battleship/boat scenes. There was zero emotional attachment. I read people comparing the battle scenes to Saving Private Ryan, which is an absolute joke. SPR revolutionized war movies. Dunkirk may not have been "trash" but it was massively overrated and way short of needing a second viewing.

Black Hawk Down was fantastic. It had everything a war movie needs: emotional attachment to characters, true elements, action, visuals.

Wonderful movie, could be my #1.

Black Hawk Down is weird, were there no American actors? It was just a load of Brits/Australians doing varyingly unsettling accents,

If you put a movie like Gladiator you would almost certainly open up the doors for movies like Gone with the Wind or Forest Gump right?

    What about Troy?

Loved Dunkirk then, watched it a couple of months ago again, still love it. Will certainly be in my top 10 at least.

Yeah I mean the main character is American. Sam Shepard too.

Black Hawk Down has one of my favorite sayings ever "Only the dead have seen the end of war"

Currently it's just outside the top 10 of my list. I'm at 12 lol

Shit I just saw in the cast listing that Danny Hoch of "White Boys" fame is in this movie lol. But dude is right, a lot of non-Americans but nothing super new to the world of acting.

Apparently Tom Hardy was in it as well but I don't remember the character. Same with Ty Burell.

Gulf War had some great films. The Hurt Locker is one I enjoyed. 3 Kings is another.

I will say this....I googled top 50 war movies of all time, there are a lot of movies I've never seen. One that sticks out, The Deer Hunter. I LOVE Vietnam themed movies, this is one I'm ashamed to admit I've never seen.

I've the iconic "russian roulette" scene or whatever you'd call it, but that's about it. It took me until a few years ago to finally get around to watching Apocalypse Now, and I think it was some extended anniversary edition.

Here's a question....What about Casualties of War? Not a ton of action so idk if it's technically a "war" movie. Same thing with Good Morning Vietnam. Would these be considered for the list?

There's zero chance in fuck that Starship Troopers or 300 should count while Good Morning, Vietnam shouldn't..

But at least 300 is a fictionalized account of a real battle. Starship Troopers is set 2-300 years from now on a planet nobody knows exists lol. At least there really was a Xerces. He might not have been 7ft, but Hitler didn't die in a movie theater explosion either.

If 300 is considered TOO fictionalized, then I will remove it from my list without question. To be honest, I just needed a war movie I've actually seen lol. I almost thought about putting some Chuck Norris on the list.

That wasn't meant to be a giant rant against Starship Troopers or 300 as much as a stump for Good Morning, Vietnam. The latter is likely in my top 5.

That said I personally wouldn't count ST while I'd begrudgingly count 300. But that's just me so whatev.

haha well luckily even I refrained by a giant rant against ST. Unless 3 sentences is a little much for the iPhone.

And yeah I mean, trust me, I'd like to include Mission in Action or Rambo to give me more than 13 movies lol.

Frankly I don't get how Starship Troopers is counted if War for the Planet of the Apes isn't.

Clearly divided conflicting species, strongholds, battlefields, battle speeches, tactics, armies, generals, lieutenants..

List of war films and TV specials

just to maybe refresh memories of forgotten gems.

also if you stick to the right side of the page it leans toward more recent and so more likely seen films.

Now we have proof that Starship Troopers is actually a documentary sent back through time, can I have it on the list?

I love DVDA, he's like a little brother to me. But if you're new to his schtick then hey, that's probably where you're getting the haha it's a joke. And just because you would hear it on Family Guy or South Park doesn't mean anything. If South Park had an episode glorifying the killing of Jews, would you be like "Wow what a fucking hilarious episode I am just so fucking amazed at the wit behind Matt and Trey!!"

I love both of those shows, fuck man I just watched the Whale Wars episode of South Park last night. But sometimes we need to check ourselves. If "I thought a movie about the horrors of concentration camps was a comedy" is some new age comedy routine then have Butters shoot me in the dick asap.

Again, nothing but love for DVDA, but sometimes it's beyond a "sense of humor". SOmetimes dudes just say stupid shit on the internet because it's the internet, to me it's no different than if he said that to my best friend who is Jewish who's grandfather was in a concentration camp who's family had to flee to Romania then to the US and somehow fucking survived to where dude is still alive pushing 90 something.

    I don't think I've even seen 10 war films.

    1. Saving Private Ryan
    2. Hot Shots Part Deux

I mean I know there’s a lot of war movies. But we did a top 10 action movies and there’s literally so many more of those.

Side note, it's not a war film but the movie War on Everyone with Alexander Skaarsgaard and Michael Pena is really good.

I do love single shot scenes like Scorsese does in Goodfellas and whatnot, but those are REAL single shots, not an edited together thing. I think when you edit an entire 2+ hours as a single shot it loses its cool factor and becomes more of a gimmick.
totally disagree with this. i thought the single shot made Birdman even better.

can't wait to see how they do this for 1917. obviously judging from reviews, it worked.

i can do a top 10-15 war films. Not sure about 25. There are movies like black hawk down etc that I don't think belong and just putting them as 25 doesn't mean shit. like what's the point? Top 10 seems to make more sense. why scramble for 25 movies when most of us probably don't even like the ones we are putting at 20-25? at least I won't.

assuming zero dark thirty counts as a war film?

There is no way I've seen more than ten war movies. Does Captain America: The First Avenger count?
