kdestiny, 3puppies and Peter can be on the reserves list if there's any more drop outs. We don't know the status of BBF and Spudz. I shot BBF a PM a couple of days ago but he hasn't replied so I don't think he's even here. Spudz is serving a ban but I think that's up tomorrow so if he remembers to come back and behave himself then all good.
I'll post the two ties due tomorrow (BBF/Gangers and Spudz/The Diamond) and Defrost/Rusty and Donald/Huss Huss Huss will be posted Tuesday. I'll send out PMs as well as tagging.
Any no-shows after the first 24 hours from anyone then we'll look for replacements who will be given extra time to complete the ties.

I'm just going to say, if Huss Huss Huss no shows, I should get a free bye rather than have to go against a replacement participant. I have been training for a battle with Huss Huss Huss. Anyone else I will not be prepared for.
I mean, who is @mth facing? That's why I was a little taken back by him getting a bye but then when BBF, HUSS, and Spudz go down they're looking for replacements. It'd be kind of weird if you didn't get a bye like he did.

I'm not even negative to the bye as it probably just makes it go by faster if even the replacements aren't dependable. Maybe at the start that was the idea, just give a bye if you don't provide but as more and more seemed likely to flake out, the replacement idea seemed better.
I hope I flake out so they'll have to get two replacements.
I think this is probably what happened. It was a neat, quick solution to resolve mth and Mikey after they were already close to the deadline with no posts. If half the first round got a bye, it would move things quick, but kind of defeat the purpose of the tournament.
There's not really a clean way to resolve the issue without someone getting an unfair advantage/disadvantage, so best hope is that the participants in question just show up as planned.
Mikey dropped out halfway through the tie with mth so there was really no time to find a replacement so the bye had to happen. Because issues were starting to crop up last week with Spudz et al then I started thinking getting replacements for this week’s ties. I get what you guys are saying though that if mth gets one than everyone else that could be affected this week should also get one.
Just read Psycho’s response, makes the most sense. I think to be fair, ties will go up as planned. If everyone shows up then good and if not then we’ll stick with byes to be consistent.

I just have to ask; is there any wiggle room on the 400 word count limit? I had the damnedest time squeezing my opening volley into the word count. I had a good first revision that sat at 410 words, so I cut out a lot of extraneous verbiage and lots of first names - Instead of "Bobby Lashley did X" it became "Lashley did X". I got things down to 398 by the end, but it was a little hairy.
I imagine if it was like...one word over it might be fine. But generally no.
Also, you'll probably have to edit your post, because you're not supposed to debate against your opponent's choice for the first post. I'll let Badger/Mazer handle that how they please, though.

Its hard to cheat on a written debate unless you can hack someone's computer or read their mind.
Now that I think about it, yeah, I sort of understand the "no debating your opponent's first post" thing for your own first post.
Because the second person who goes would always have an unfair advantage. They'd see the first person's post, be able to read over it and pick it apart, and cement their own counter to it while also presenting their own argument. Person 1 would always be coming from behind.
And that's not fair.
I actually never liked the rule. I personally feel like it makes first post a huge advantage. Lot of first posts for me (and the Mazer/Badger team) since that was implemented.

Don't want to say specific debates, but strategy talk -without talking anything currently going on-is fair.
I see it this way in a standard 3 post:
If you give me first post-I get to speak first, and use a paragraph to set up a logical parameter for how we should evaluate the topic. Then I can establish supporting points, and build to my main point of attack.
You can't touch any of that, and if I posted well-it should set in the judges mind as they read yours.
So let's say you do all of that equally well in your first post. I spoke first, so unless you outperformed me I get to be the most memorable.
On post 2, I get to rebut first. I'm probably going to pick your weakest point (either in something you brought up or something didn't acknowledge), and try to establish where you're wrong or very often will be. If I can layer in a few more, even better. But the most important thing is I put you on your heels on at least one thing, so you have to spend a decent amount of word count defending. Then, I'm concluding by providing additional rationale or my strongest points. Keeping a coherent narrative is an often overlooked aspect of these debates.
So now, you're on post 2. If you leave my strongest points alone or don't spend adequate time on it-good luck. Of course, you also have to defend what i hopefully blew up. So you have to do that, and still have word count to reinforce one of your stronger narratives,and hopefully launch your chosen counterpunch. If I do my job well, you have to be a lot more efficient
On post 3, I could go a lot of different ways. I can strengthen more if you haven't attacked well. If I've seen some weak spots I can go there. I'm almost always to going to include some rapid fire on some less well developed arguments. Particularly if you didn't have the word count to defend or establish attacks. Then I'm going to conclude with wherever my strongest thread have been.
Your post 3-You do some have advantage here. You can pull a rabbit I won't be able to respond to. But if you need to continue to defend my attacks (which you probably do), and provide some strengths on your argument-a game changer might be hard with your limited word resource. Spend too many words, and you may get hit for never adequately resolving my points or making the audience believe in your view strongly enough.
i think often people blame losses on not having the last word. Really, years ago I had the results on a spreadsheet (I was in grad school-I wasn't a sane man). Before we made the rule change, 1st post was winning more than second post.
Most debate tourneys in real life don't have the rule.
But a lot of folks have different takes, and nothing wrong with doing what makes it enjoyable for the group.

It’s certainly worth considering and might even extend the tie if needed but it depends on if mth is up for it first for all and also we need to make sure everyone shows up for the last two ties going ahead tonight. Will wait and see what happens.

lol. What I like is how these tournaments pop up and the people who flake out are active as fuck around the boards, then suddenly they're ghosts. BBF for example I think spent all his Rajah posting time on manufacturing himself into the finals with Simone for POTTY.
I just wish we could hijack a debate. For example, I would have zero issue jumping in and helping a fellow African (BBF) to destroy another fellow African (Gangbangerz)
BBF has been a very solid hand in these tournaments over the years and even helped out with judging. If he could make it here then I’m sure he would be here. I think he might be going through some stuff offline. He did post some stuff in Depression thread lately.

Question for the Wilfred Overlords - If I choose to quote either a passage from an article or something that I want to use to support my case or a direct quote from my opponent's post- Does that count against the 400 word count?
Quotes from your opponents don't count. Quoting outside sources does, though. You can technically link articles, but without quoting what you need, it will probably prove ineffective.
