I discovered 754 new artists this year. I really vibed with the Vines, I explored 57 of their songs, listened to 6 of their albums, and spent over 3 hours with them.

I started using Spotify in 2018, and my top artist and song in both 2018 and 2019 is Boom Boom Tap and the Prodigyl

I should note that I share Spotify with my wife, but oddly none of her artists or songs made it to the top. I think she has more variety, as I tend to listen to the same artists and songs over and over.

Not sure about the Backstreet Boys being on the top songs list, I recall hearing that a couple of times, maybe it was left on repeat or something.

Just means you gotta listen to a lot more music to drown that shit out. Whether it's driving to work, or walking, or doing Yoga, whatever it is you do, make sure you have Spotify playing. I expect better results from you this time next year.

my ipod used to be my most prized possession. i now stream my music almost exclusively. i got it all available at any time, without having to carry around another device or have it taking up memory on my phone. i can also check out new music and back catalogues very easily without having to commit to buying something i might not like. $120 in a year maybe buys you 12 albums. i have access to significantly more than 12 albums with a spotify subscription, plus a place to listen to podcasts and curated playlists.

I don't think I know anyone who still buys music that isn't vinyl. Everybody streams.

It's $144 a year here... and that would get me 6, maybe 7 albums, tops. I like being able to access it anywhere, any time. I like being able to listen to podcasts, loading up my favourite albums, sticking on a themed "radio" station or creating custom playlists.



@BBF is to blame for my stats this year. The few weeks of Listening Room Week 2 saw Frank Turner get a lot of air play. Even after that, I would listen to Love Ire & Song a few times each week and would occasionally fall asleep after having put it on... at which point it would play 7-8 times till I woke up and turned it off. The first 4 tracks to that album are 4 of my top 5 songs for the year with the lead track to Devin Townsend's new album filling the other spot.

Devy and Devin Townsend Project were my top two for the year... something to do with seeing him live in concert probably aided that.
Dream Theater and Frank Turner took two more spots and my artist of the decade took the fifth.

Matthew Good (and Matthew Good Band) were my top two for the decade. If this wrap had come out before I did my Listening Week, I probably would have picked Matthew Good. I love him and you should all love him too.

Yep pay $120 because it means I get new music as soon as it's released, I discover so many new artists, and it's too expensive to buy CDS all the time.

I miss buying CDs, I really loved reading the liner notes, seeing the artwork, etc., but like others said it was getting too damn expensive. I used to feel I had more of a connection to the music when listening to it on CDs, but money saving is better I suppose.

It's still the same imo. You're still paying $10-15 for digital. I mean seriously how much money are you saving when you think about it?

But it's also cheaper for the artist to go digital. You don't have to press up as many physical copies like you would have even 5 years ago.

For me, I'm a physical copy guy. CD, tape, vinyl. And you know what people are missing out on the most? The journey. The journey to Sam Goody or Disc Jockey or even Best Buy and Target to get that new album on Tuesday. Closest you're going to get is when a new video game comes out and even then you could just DL it straight to your console half the time.

And believe me....Spotify is great and has it perks but very few artists make real money by you streaming all their albums for free.

So yeah...awesome for us we're getting their hard work for free but shitty for them bcuz they don't really make shit unless they're getting a billion streams.

I still buy CDs of the bands I'm into and new artists once I've heard a few of their songs (often thanks to Spotify, which is mainly for the wife) because we've got a CD player in the car and I've got a stereo at work for music. If I'm just sitting at home I'll use the Spotify but the other main two places I am I still need CDs if I don't just want to listen to the radio.

Yeah, so I'm the reason KONGOS are on @Melly's list 'cuz I've been streaming the shit out of 1929 Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 since they dropped, as well as their debut album on occasion, whenever I'm chilling at home (don't have them on CD yet).

I'm currently back in college and have drastically reduced hours at work. So I can't afford to buy CDs like I used to. Couple that with the fact that over half of my library has been stolen or lost over the last 10 years, and Spotify becomes very appealing. I can listen to old shit I no longer have a physical copy of, PLUS check out new shit on the go, whether it be a favorite artist's new album or completely new acts. I will always prefer the physical route, but time and money make it hard.

When I'm paid decent again, I plan to use it the same way I used illegal downloading: check out stuff I hadn't heard before to decide whether I like it, then slowly start buying the actual copies.

Wu-Tang is almost purely down to wanting to relive their music while I was watching An American Saga.

That was another one on there due to a school-related assignment. I had to analyze that piece along with composing the beginning of my own fugue. I still haven't quite gotten to the point of listening to classical music casually, but it's still fascinating to listen to.

i only listened to 1,914 minutes in spotify this past year, which is the lowest i've ever had. i typically do most of my listening to things in the car, and this year was dominated by podcasts, and also having a desk job close to home for half the year, so my time spent driving was cut drastically. this years lists are very oddly skewed because of that, though just like simmo, rosk managed to get manic street preachers entrenched in my rotation.

It's sad that growing up I was a fan of Wu Tang's early stuff, the solo stuff dope, but man when they blew up after Triumph I scaled back because it was a little much lol. WuWear in full effect. Sad part is due to this I stopped pretty much listening to anything they did after Wu Tang Forever and would only listen to certain artists like GZA, Method Man, some of the lesser known cats like Masta Killa and the sub-groups that spawned later. Which in retrospect, Wu Tang pretty much fell off the planet as a group around 2000 anyway but still.....

I think they could have trimmed a good number of tracks and made it one disc as a tighter album. Like you said, some of the solo stuff is good after, but as a group, the fire kind of died. The Saga Continues, all produced by Matthematics, is pretty dope, though. Probably the most recent release as a "group" I've loved.

There's a phenomenal Wu Tang documentary I watched on Amazon Prime "The Story of the Wu Tang Clan" Super dope if you haven't seen it. Pretty much chronicles the early days then skips a little to the more present like the last 5-10 years so to speak. Worth it for sure.
