The Ring is a classic. So good. Jaws is one of THE best. So glad it is in the top 3. Exorcist scared me the first time I began to to watch, had to stop watching when she crawled down the stairs. Now I find it funny.

Ouija boards - they're all fun and games until someone gets possessed

Mom forbid those in the house as well - but she allowed us to play with lawn jarts, and model rockets.

Exorcist is only scary before she's fully possessed. Once she's got all the make-up on and is strapped in the bed it becomes a comedy. Most disturbing part for me was when she got the exam at the hospital and the blood shot out of her neck.

The hospital scene, with the long needle, is where most people fainted in the theaters.

And people walked out more disgusted with the scene where Regan was masturbating with a crucifix, than when she was projectile vomiting pea soup.

So I'm very very curious to see the last 4.
Even though I love the series, Friday the 13th doesn't hold up to the rest of that list. No one could seriously suggest that Friday the 13th could measure up to any of those. Loved it when I was a kid still do. It isn't particularly scary though. Sure, it became a culture phenomenon, but the film itself is derivative at best.

Child's Play is miles above something like Witches.

Every Friday The 13th is better than every movie on this list. Same with Phantasm and A Nightmare On Elm Street.

I have to strongly disagree that movie like Witches is somehow scarier than several Friday the 13th movies. That's just me, personal taste obviously.

And at the top of the list -

The Shining. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy"

Jack Nicholson stars as Jack Torrance, a writer hired to work as a winter caretaker in a desolate summer hotel. He brings his wife (Shelly Duvall) and son to keep him company, but whether the hotel is haunted by the ghosts of the prior caretaker, who murdered his family before taking his own life, or simply the result of cabin fever and writer's block, this movie is as thrilling and terrifying as they come.

The first time I watched this movie, it was an "edited-for-television" version and of course interrupted via commercials. This was a terrible shame, and I was fortunate to re-watch it in full, uninterrupted, and it was 1000 times better.

There are a number of great scenes in this movie, but the scene when Jack's wife discovers exactly what he has been writing for several months is as scary a moment as anything on film. And the fact that the pace of the movie before this point had been so terribly slow - conveying the stillness of the location, made this so much more effective.

A few years ago, I had the privilege to read the book that this was based on, because more than one friend had told me that the book was even better. I agreed, because even though Kubrick's take was one possible direction, the story is so strong, and the characters come across so very different in the book.

This was my #1. From start to finish, incredible. To this day, whenever I'm at a hotel walking down the hallways alone, I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up just waitin for something fucked up and twisted to appear.

Everyone just pulled their own weight throughout. And once you start watching documentaries, such as Room 237, you start noticing all the little details that you wouldn't notice unless someone pointed them out to you which then makes everything 10x more interesting.

If you haven't seen this, fuck what you're doing and figure out a way to see it. Stream, buy the DVD/Blu Ray, they have a dope ass 3-pack of The Shining, Clockwork Orange, and Space Odyssey that is worth getting if you don't own them already.

3pup I have yet to read the book but my aunt was a HUGE King fan so growing up she was always the one going "The movie is great, the book is better" OR "The movie sucks because it left out about 70% of the details in the book" Pete Semetary and IT are great examples of movies I love, but the books fill in so many blanks. So yeah, THE SHINING=scariest movie in my opinion EVER.

And I can't fucking wait for Doctor Sleep. I haven't read the book, heard it was awesome. The movie looks fucking great and I'm not going in it with the "It better be as good as The Shining" because that's fucking impossible.

I don't think Doctor Sleep looks that good from the commercials. It looks okay. And not that it matters but that title stinks. Doctor Sleep? I'm surprised they didn't change it for the movie even tho you don't normally change the name of King adaptations.

As for The Shining, it's a classic of course. It was on my list at #4.

I am definitely 10000% shocked we didn't see, at the very least, the first Nightmare on Elm St....but we saw The Descent lol. That movie just sticks out like such a sore thumb, the idea that out of everyone who voted, that movie beat out Halloween, Nightmare on Elm St, Friday the 13th, Poltergeist, fuck the list goes on.

I'll be honest, my list had Halloween 2 so I didn't do the franchise any help lol. Idk why I like 2 more and think it's scarier than any of the others.

I was not shocked at the top 3, but the order of them surprised me a little, although the Shining made it on most of the lists submitted. And with that being said, I was kind of surprised that nobody called out "About Schmidt", the Jack Nicholson movie that was super scary for giving us full frontal Kathy Bates.

But to recap the top 10 as voted here were

    1 The Shining
    2 The Exorcist
    3 Jaws
    4 The Ring
    5 Alien
    6 The Blair Witch Project
    7 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    8 Scream
    9 Psycho
    10 The Witches
    10 The Descent

The full list of films nominated by y'all includes some pretty scary movies - I was planning to post the rest of them tomorrow, but somewhere I lost a day - and since today is Halloween, here we go:

    Halloween
    The Conjuring
    The Fly
    The Birds
    Paranormal Activity
    The Thing (John Carpenter’s)
    Dawn of the Dead 1978
    The Invitation
    Nightmare on Elm St
    Evil Dead 1981
    Sinister
    The Mist
    The Amityville Horror
    Poltergeist
    Nosferatu
    Friday the 13th
    Halloween 2
    Tremors
    Insidious
    IT (2017)
    The Cabin in the woods
    The Silence of the Lambs
    It Chapter 1 (the remake)
    The Witches
    Rosemary's Baby
    Hellraiser 2
    28 Days Later
    1408
    Arachnophobia
    Watership Down
    Invasion of The Body Snatchers
    Carrie
    Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)
    Child's Play
    Scary Movie

    Thanks to everyone who played

My list would've been some order of the following:

    The Conjuring
    Nightmare on Elm Street
    Halloween
    Cabin in the Woods
    Paranormal Activity
    Silence of the Lambs
    28 Days Later
    An American Werewolf in London
    The Shining
    Get Out

I wanted to put the original IT on my top 10 but I was worried it would get picked apart because it's considered a mini-series or some shit even though the DVD doesn't have it broken up it's all one continuous 2-3 hour movie lol.

That remake is pretty wicked though. I need to see the 2nd half.

I did noticed this after I started sorting them all, and "It" would not have made it into the top ten if I had combined them, because they appeared so low on the lists.

While I understand that being a few years older than many of you, that may have been the reason nobody else mentioned Rosemary's Baby, but I was really surprised that the Silence of the Lambs did not fare as well as I thought it would. Anthony Hopkins was awesome in this movie.

I love pretty much everything Sam Jackson has been in other than Snakes on a Plane. This was an awesome movie, another Stephen King story. "We've only just begun....." We actually sampled that Carpenters song years ago on a track we did simply because I loved it in this movie.

    Rosemary's Baby=classic.

Silence of the Lambs isn't even scary is it? It's demented, has some fucked up scenes no doubt, but I don't know if I was truly SCARED. But I definitely fuck with it because it's just an all around great movie.

I disagree when people say Silence of the Lambs is a horror movie. It's a thriller to me. Not as scary as horror movies usually are.

I agree. And I also don't think that a scary movie=horror movie as I wouldn't call a movie like WITCHES, JAWS, a horror movie.

But Silence is more of a crime thriller drama type movie than something that scared me in the traditional sense that a lot of these movies fall under. Disturbing, twisted, fucked up=yes.

yea I also did not include Silence of the Lambs because I didn't think it fit the scary movie genre enough, but I could see the argument and it's a fabulous movie.

Red Dragon is just as good IMO

This was my list (#1 at the top):

    The Shining (1980)
    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
    Jaws (1975)
    The Witch (2015)
    Paranormal Activity (2007)
    The Descent (2005)
    The Fly (1986)
    Nosferatu (1922)
    The Witches (1990)
    Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)

The Witches and Ernest Scared Stupid are on there because they fucked me right up as a kid and left a lasting impression. I think that counts for something whether or not I'd find them scary now. There are other flicks I left off (Hereditary being a primary example) that I think were really damn good but didn't necessarily scare me, so I didn't put them on there. I tried to put stuff that actually left me spooked and I just realized I didn't have The Ring on there despite it doing just that...maybe I'd swap that out with Nosferatu, I guess.

In Ernest Scared Stupid, when the girl rolls over in bed comes face to face with the troll, that scared me to bits as a kid.

That troll is pretty damn scary even now. And turning the kids and dog into wood statues and stuff. It's pretty fucked up.

They're kind of their own shit. There's barely any action in either film, shit what action is in Alien other than the Alien killing these motherfuckers? ALIENS on the other hand, oh boy give me that gun Drake has on his waist and I'll fix all our problems in the world in no time!

Of all the DVD and Blu Ray purchases I've made over the past 20 years or so, none have been more watched than my Friday box set and Halloween box set. Weirdly, I went to look them up on amazon for a friend and see neither being sold anymore. sad

I have the Nightmare On Elm St boxset from like fucking 10-15 years ago. It comes with 2 sets of 3D glasses to watch Freddy's Dead, which is dope because I actually saw that movie in 3D when it came out (thanks Mom for taking me and my 8 year old brother!) I THOUGHT it came with the Nightmare on Elm St TV series but it's actually just a big documentary that I believe is on Netflix now, I'll have to look.

I own a Friday the 13th box set.....Just not the Jason version lol. That weird TV show that had nothing to do with the movies. Wal Mart was selling it for like $30-40 and I bought it lol.

Yeah, I have an Elm Street Blu Ray collection which I bought for $4, but I'm not a massive Elm Street fan so it gets little play from me.

How is the Friday the 13th TV show? Isn't it an anthology series, like Tales from the Crypt?

I'm a huge Evil Dead fan. I even have one of those plush Ash dolls Target was selling lol. The fact I forgot to put it on my list was a travesty. But with that said...I didn't see the movie until I was like 16, I had already seen Army of Darkness, then I saw Evil Dead 2, by the time I got to Evil Dead I wasn't SCARED. Had I seen it when I was younger, I bet it would have fucked with me hard. It's still one of my favorites, and I would have put it on my list simply because it has and still does scare the fuck out of people.

Damn...that's a tough choice. But it would be between the 4-7 films. But I wouldn't know which to single out as my favorite.

This remains my all time favorite series though. I remember when me and my cousin were kids and we'd spend the night over his house my aunt would run us to Blockbuster, and we'd rent a WWF VHS and either a Friday the 13th, Halloween, or Nightmare on Elm Street film. 9 times out of ten, it was a Friday film.

My best friend's mom worked at this small video store called Road Show Video back in the 90's. Their main wall was horror movies and she would always let me come up and rent them for free. She'd make me pay for the WWF tapes or movies, but for some reason she'd let me rent a couple horror movies for free lol.

I miss multiple video stores. All we have here is a Family Video and then there's a place that's been open for about 35 years called Video Warehouse. That was the spot you'd go to for wrestling tapes. They had like 50 of them it was the shit.

I don't know of any video stores around me. It sucks cause that was a favorite past time for me. Browsing Netflix, Hulu, etc. for movies just isn't the same.

A big part of that was because once you'd invested the effort to bring a selection home, you'd paid for it and you'd sit through the whole movie even if it sucked.

We don't have any video stores around here anymore, but we still have a lot of Redbox rental machines.

Redbox is ok but man I miss the variety. Redbox you pretty much have to wait for either a major holiday like Halloween and Christmas or a major sequel is coming out to get anything older than 2017. For example, I saw Hocus Pocus of all fucking movies at the Redbox. I've never seen a movie in the Redbox from the 90's until then.

I remember when Blockbuster opened in my town in 1989. It was a big deal. I also remember being in school and spending afternoons after school playing the demo games and wandering around with friends looking for movies to watch on weekend nights. I also remember applying for a job there via a computer mounted on the wall.

I didn't say that they were scary. I said they were better. The Friday The 13th movies have some great jump scares though. I think Jason jumping out of the water in the first movie is the best jump scare ever, and one of, if not the most iconic scene in horror, with the scene in Phantasm with The Tall Man standing over Mike with the midget zombies jumping up on both sides to get him being a close 2nd. The Shining is the only movie on the list that I agree deserves to even be on it. I'd eat glass before I'd watch Brokeback Mountain.

Well, this thread is about SCARY movies so it doesn't really matter about the overall quality lol. Honestly I think you're back to crack if you think every Friday the 13th movie is better than every movie on this list sans The Shining. You're seriously going to watch Jason X and tell me that's a better movie than Alien? Or The Ring? That's just troll nonsense.

    Different strokes for different folks

I will say this about Jason X. It was the first Friday the 13th movie that I saw in the movie theaters, as the last one before that came out when I was like 8 or 9. I was so amped up for it. It was like how most nerds these days lose their seed when a Marvel movie comes out. And it did not disappoint. It was a hell of an entertaining movie. I even bought it on DVD and later Blu Ray. It's not Shawshank Redemption, but it's a fun popcorn flick.

But is it better than any movie on this list? Maybe the Ring but that's abou it.

    lol. Fuck you.

Jason X is a tough movie to watch because imo it's horrible. I like Jason's look, I can even dig the premise, but the execution is terrible. Even for these type of movies.

But is it worse than Freddy v. Jason? That movie.......fucking.......sucks. I would say "sucked" but each time I watch it when I run out of acid to pour down my penis hole, I'm reminded that Hollywood just didn't give a fuck like the rest of us did about the potential battle between Jason and Freddy.

"I wanted to hire someone who had sad eyes when casting Jason" "Let's put Robert in a mask" "Let's have a bargain bin Jay from Mallrats!!" "Robert wanted Pink (Whack) but she was on tour so we got Kelly Rowland instead!"

Jason X was the last F13 movie I needed to see and finally saw it maybe a year or two ago. It was not worth the wait. Absolute trash.
    Freddy vs. Jason is dope.

Freddy vs. Jason was trash. But I was excited as hell for it. Even saw it in the theaters 4 times, but the longer time passes the more I realize how awful it is. Jason X will always have my love though.

One day my standards will be so low I'll be able to come back and agree with this statement.

4 times?? LOL. What the fuck did you get locked in?

I remember a guy in front of us had a Freddy Krueger tat, he was probably in his late 40's, and he was more pissed about the ending than the entire movie.

But yeah, everything about Freddy v. Jason sans Robert Englund and Brenan Fletcher fucking sucked.

I mean, they had Rey Mysterio as Freddy's stunt double for fuck's sake lol.

It's like the 90s happened then these horror franchises started to suck, sans New Nightmare. Post 1990 has there been a really good Friday, Elm Street, or Halloween? Not until 2018 lol

Edit: Just remembered Halloween H20, I actually liked that when it came out, but rewatched it more recently and it really isn't that good.

True. It's like their nuts were cut off.

I mean, I loved Jason Goes to Hell. Halloween H20 was very good when I was younger, mediocre now.

But I bet there are people that are 10 years younger treating some of those 90's-2000's sequels as the fucking shit because that's what they grew up on. Trust me, we had a lot of crap in the 80's as well we were just too young to give a fuck lol.

First time noticing this thread. Had no idea a new top 10 was going on. The video store stories have got my attention though. Had Hollywood and Blockbuster a 2 minute walk apart from each other. Liked Blockbuster's DVD service that allowed you to return movies to the store, get a rental in-store out of it. Bought a lot of shit from Hollywood when they were closing down, and saw Family Video mentioned somewhere here - love their online store but nothing within about 400 miles of me. Been to one in Iowa a few years back when I was there and surprised the store survived with how dead it appeared and yet the shelves were well stocked. Redbox just ain't the same thing.

The Halloween series should've ended with H2O. It was a perfect way to end the thing. I just pretend that Resurrection never happened, and that's the way it did end. More satisfying that way.

I don't even remember Halloween Resurrection being promoted. I remember one day I was watching HBO or something and it was going to be coming on so I taped it simply because I saw Busta Rhymes in the cast lol. I think the potential was there, but maybe not for a Halloween movie.

It would have been great if Busta Rhymes got killed. Like, he gets stabbed, and he says to Michael "Gimme some more", and then Michael Myers snaps his neck, and Michael says his first ever words "Break your fucking neck, bitches"

I didn't know (not that I should) that the director of Resurrection is the same director that did Halloween II

Resurrection...fuck, looking at the cast it was like the B-team of that era of young actors. Kevin from American Pie is in this for fuck's sake. He's one of those actors that would find themselves in a movie like this so people didn't think he was just a comedy type actor. We see this with these Disney kids who go from some Mickey Mouse bullshit movie and the next thing you know they turn 18 and they're half naked getting their spine ripped out.

Also, going down the rabbit hole, I found this interesting piece on Daisy McCrackin's (Donna Chang in the movie) Wiki page about her being kidnapped in 2017:
On May 3, 2017 McCrackin and fellow actor Joseph Capone were victims of a kidnapping in Los Angeles. Three assailants, Amber Neal, Keith Andre Stewart and Johntae Jones, entered McCrackin’s home, "pistol whipped" Capone, and then covered he and McCrackin's heads with black hoods.[2] From there, the kidnappers drove Capone to a house in Compton, stripped him nude, bound him, and placed him in a bathtub without food for around 30 hours.[2]
Meanwhile, two of the other assailants drove McCrackin to several banks in her own car, and told her to provide at least $10,000 (£7,500) for the release of Capone. McCrackin was able to escape and alert police after being driven back to her home. The defendants were expected to appear in court on July 23, 2018 for a pre-trial hearing. All three face life in prison if convicted

I used to watch that show The Osbournes religiously. The singer of The Used started dating Kelly and his name was Bert McCracken. The whackest name of a singer ever.

Sorry @3puppies I totally forgot to send my list. Mine would be:-

    1) TCM
    2) Nightmare on Elm St
    3) The Ring
    4) The Fly
    5) The Shining
    6) Alien
    7) Sinister
    8) Saw
    9) The Witches
    10) Ghost

I haven't seen Evil Dead or Halloween. The last 2 above were both when I was a kid and they terrified me. The bit where the black ghosts take the bad guy to hell was terrifying to me as a kid.

Also the Wickerman and the Exercist would be close but couldn't find room for them.
