His HBO special Killin Them Softly.

I guess mine would be Carlin, Pryor, Chapelle and Chris Rock.

Oh yeah man he's incredible. As it was mentioned (and you can find this on Youtube if you don't have HBO Go) is Killing Them Softly. His newest special on Netflix, Sticks and Stones, fucking brilliant. If you've never watched the Chappelle Show, look up the CLAYTON BIGSBY sketch or the Real World sketch, those are 2 of the best ones but the show itself is amazing so definitely check out Season 1 and 2.

What I love about Chappelle is he's such an educated, well-spoken black man that you could listen to him talk about the fucking weather and he'd have something interesting to say.

Saw that same tour here. Except I went specifically for Hedberg and Black. Just didn't really care much for Atell.

    All three were terrific though.

If you asked me tomorrow I would probably replace Murphy with Pryor. But Eddie Murphy Raw holds such a special place in my heart. I remember my best friend and I watching it with his brother who's about 15 years older than us. We were maybe 7-8 years old, not really understanding a lot of it at the time but that McDonald's bit was speaking to me lol.

killing them softly (from 2000) is his best and one of my favorite stand up specials ever made. so so good. if you haven't seen it, it's a must watch for any comedy fan.

his newer ones aren't as well crafted IMO, though I still enjoy them plenty. but his follow up to Killing Them Softly was called For What It's Worth (2004), and it too is very good from what I recall.

For What It's Worth was awesome. I believe this was the special where he talks about why terrorists never take black hostages because he was doing some stuff about 9/11.

I'll admit, the earlier Netflix specials were not AS GOOD but Sticks and Stones.....boy....That shit was incredible. lol. And I hadn't even watched the older ones prior, so going back it was a little unfair imo because of how good Sticks was in comparison.

I could seriously just listen to this dude shoot the shit about life and be content. His comedy is gold, but as a human being, even better.

    Really liked Sticks and Stones.

Couple cringey kind of walking-the-tightrope jokes that got outraged out of proportion, imo.

But he's so perfected his casual anecdotal-style jokes, the guy could tell me about a random ham sandwich he had and I'd be in tears.

Netflix is throwing money around like it's going out of style. I am not surprised to see guys like Chappelle and Burr churning out less than perfect material to cash in. I thought Sticks and Stones was a B show compared to Chapelle's usual stuff but Paper Tiger was an F. Just god awful formulaic trash from a guy I can usually also listen to talk about making a sandwich.

    - - - Updated - - -

I am not optimistic about the upcoming Eddie Murphy stand up.

Eddie needs to be doing some shit on the underground before doing a special but you never know.....Not much to go off of since he hasn't done one in 30+ years but that doesn't mean he can't pull it off. I'm optimistic. You're a glass half empty type person in general.

Sticks and Stone is Chappelle's best out of the Netflix specials. Not even a race. Compared the earlier stuff, I agree, but that doesn't mean it's not great. We've had this discussion already so I'm not negative toward bogging down my own thread with you saying the same generic stuff you read on some hipster crybaby SJW editorial. Because you already admitted he's fucking awesome, but for some reason you want to be that guy (Everyone is praising it, let me be the one to come and piss on the parade because I'm LOCONUT!!!)

George Carlin, Lucille Ball, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams. Rodney Dangerfield and Bob Newhart were also pretty special.

Robin Williams was fucking HILARIOUS. I remember when I was younger watching those Comic Relief specials and he was soooo good.

And Rodney Dangerfield....Man that guy was the standard, might still be.

You know who I'm shocked nobody has mentioned. Dice Clay.

Dice was very good, and unique, but he's not in the top 4 all time. He's more like Andy Kauffman based on length of career. Magical for their time, but too short. I'd put Jackie Gleason, Henny Youngman, George Burns, and Bob Hope over guys like Dice who shined brightly but only for a short period of time.

I agree with that. I see some people mentioning comedians that kind of fit in that Dice Clay category.

Another guy I'd consider, if he decides to keep going, would be Jeff Dunham. Master showman, always funny, and he's been doing it for a long time.

I respect you putting Eddie Murphy on your list because he was so good, and so natural, but he stepped away from it to make movies, so many of which were just terrible.

But I suppose you could say that about my inclusion of Robin Williams, too.

I could actually see a shit ton of people putting Jeff Dunham in the top 4-5. I'm not into it at all, but everyone else I know is lol.

Yeah man like I said about Eddie....Ask me tomorrow and I'd put Pryor in his place. I honestly should have put something like "STAND UP MT RUSHMORE" but so far it seems everyone understands where I was coming from. Robin Williams getting a nod is justified. Sure he didn't have as well known of a stand up career as his acting career BUTTTT he was still funny as fuck.

With Eddie, like I said, it's almost a nostalgic thing. It was the first time I ever saw a straight up one man stand up show, I was very young, had to have been 7-8 years old. Raw was like the bar for every stand up performance after that for me. If you could do as good as Eddie Murphy Raw, you were the fucking shit. I haven't seen a lot of Richard Pryor, but I take everyone's word because what I have seen was fucking brilliant and what I haven't I can only imagine was just as if not better.

I know he doesn't belong on the Mt Rushmore, but John Leguizamo had one of the funniest specials on HBO I've ever seen. I don't want to offend anyone by posting the name in full but S***-O-RAMA is a MUST SEE. Jesus Christ, I had a fucking great youth from like 7-15 lol. THANKS HBO!!

That bit he did, can't remember which special, about not realizing the woman was on her period until after they turned the lights back on, holy shit.

Here's an unpopular opinion: North American stand ups are overrated.
This is comedy in general not just stand ups though right? So in no particular order here are some:
Ben Elton, Rik Mayall, Billy Connolly, Spike Milligan, Stephen Fry and obviously Patricia Routledge.

You guys only prefer it because you're from there, grew up on it, experience the same culture as the the comedians and therefore speak the same nuance of language and understand all of their references.

Whereas I prefer US comedy for none of those reasons, only because it is objectively superior

There was a lot of praise for Chappelle in the Jussie Smollett thread.

Well, with all due respect to the terrific comedians you mentioned, this is a MT Rushmore thread, and last I checked, MT Rushmore is located in North America.

Idk, the rajah's (a mix of north american and english voters) best stand ups countdown landed a vast majority north american result.

Well remember the other thread where A-you were the only person knocking Chappelle for some weird reason and B-the Rotten Tomatoes (fuck them) website where the critics gave it like a 30% but the FANS gave it 99%? Everywhere you go people are praising it. The only people I see knocking it are just butthurt whites and a gay asian comedian who didn't get the "I feel like I'm Chinese" joke and wanted to ride that wave of outrage lol.

But hey, it's your personal taste. You're a fan, you enjoyed some of the new stuff, love the old stuff. Kind of like me when I listen to Wu Tang.

Yeah for some ODD reason our European homeboys always want to turn this into a "My country is better than yours" type discussion. There's definitely a cultural gap here which makes these conversations pointless. Just post who the fuck goes on your Mt Rushmore and be positive, don't be like Loconut who's your typical Cali hipster.

Sorry like I said in an earlier post I probably should have made it crystal clear we're talking about stand up comedians, even though some did transition back and forth from acting and stand up. But yeah if you want to throw up a super funny actor who kills it with comedy in movies, I'm down with that!

    .
Just watched one of his on Netflix at the weekend, honestly wasn’t impressed by him, his vent work isn’t the best and I found some of his material really weak, I mean his dead terrorist shtick is just crappy playground humor.

If your favorite comedians are all from another country then you are a confused person.

Of course people are going to prefer the truth tellers about their own community.

Comedy Mt Rushmore shouldn't have four...
It should either have three, or it should just keep going...

Nah, cause it's rushmore. Which is entirely the point.

We get though, you know the writing rule of threes. Awesome. Thanks, Bill.

Now back to the comedy rushmore topic..

It's weird that we only have 1 "Mt Rushmore"

I like the idea of mountains sculpted to praise influential people in our history.
