Edit - Pablo brought up a fair point. If you want to go into the film blind, then read my thoughts after having watched the film. It will actually probably help my comments resonate more.

I feel that’s something I’ll read after watching it because just based on how long it is some of the elements will be spoiled for me (plot and emotional)

This will be tough for me to watch. The missus won’t want to watch this given her dad just passed away his year from cancer so I’ll have to find a time to watch it on my own somehow.

Saw this in the cinema, thought it was ok, watching it again thinking about that write up may change my opinion though.

Once again, physical copy on its way to me. I’ll get it watched in a few days, I’d imagine. Like the look of it though.

I can only put forward the films that have been suggested.

Been away for a bit so I'm a couple behind. Will catch up when I've caught up with work and post my thoughts.

Right so finally got around to this and then also reading JPs post about it.

With a movie like this I think ones past family experiences would impact what you take from it. Thankfully I haven’t yet had any close family of mine deal with a major medical situation like this. Not that I’ve not had family members or family friends pass from them but it wasn’t someone who I was close with from a physical standpoint (physically distant aunts and uncles) or I was too young to have a conscious thought about it (my grandfathers). Despite that I couldn’t help but imagine myself as both the son and the grandmother while watching the movie. I can’t even imagine what it must have been like for JP to watch it at that time in his life. Definitely a gripping one.

I thought the performances from Sigourney and the boy were strong. I enjoyed the artistic style decisions of the monster and the way the stories were told. Overall I thought this was a very good movie. But yeah another heart wrenching one.

So my second viewing, taking JP’s write up in to account didn’t really change my opinion on this.
It’s a solid film, everyone is good in it, but it just doesn’t connect with me for some reason.
The kids emotional reaction is so different to any sort of grief I have ever felt, I have only lost close relatives as an adult, and never to a drawn out long term illness so I can’t fully relate to the situation, but then it’s a failing of the film that I should be able to through its story telling, I just don’t.
I think if I had seen it at a younger age this might be different, It’s got that 80’s nostalgia vibe to it, in a sort of Never Ending Story kind of way, which is a plus point.
Perhaps if it lent even more in to the fantasy it would be more compelling, maybe it needed to be a bit more Pan’s Labyrinth.

It's the main reason why it was impactful for me, but I can absolutely understand why somebody who doesn't experience grief that way may struggle to connect.

In honestly, I'm probably the outlier in how I do. I get so angry in the grieving process it kind of takes over everything until I have a release. When my Auntie passed away, far too young, about a year before my step dad, there was a block on me being able to function properly until I had an explosion, which for me that time happened on a trip to Berlin (as a wider point, Berlin is not a city you ever really want to get apoplectic in).

This was the first (and actually, still to this day, only) time I've seen something which perfectly encapsulated that rage. It helped me get through the process of grieving for Alec exponentially quicker than I have for other family members. When you know there are other people who react in the same way, that repressing your natural reaction only keeps you locked in time, it makes it easier to accept it and let it out.

Ta for everyone's thoughts by the way, always interesting to see how people react to or think of pieces of media you hold dear.
