Film Watching Group Week 1: canuck's choice - 'The Guilty' (2018)

Welcome to the first week of the film watching group. For the first choice I've gone for the ONLY suggestion that has been given that is freely available on Netflix. If you don't have Netflix you can always download it from here .

canuck will introduce the film for us, you have until the end of Wednesday 14th to have watched it and posted your review.

    canuck, over to you!

Alright. Our local University does a weekly cinema series to show films that would not usually hit the big screen in the city (Similar to this project). I've only recently got into it, but the majority of the films are foreign and I have little to no knowledge about them before going in. I've chosen The Guilty because it is the standout and has the longest lasting impression on me.

The film is a Danish thriller based around an emergency call to a dispatch officer. It's difficult to provide too much detail without risking spoilers, but it takes on the one-man, one-setting vibe of films like Phonebooth and Locke. It's got great suspense, brilliant acting, and is set at a pace that makes you forget your reading subtitles or even watching a film.

It's a 2018 film screened at the Sundance Film Festival and shortlisted for best foreign film at the Academy Awards. The lead actor, Jakob Cedergren, is someone I have no familiarity with but will seek out more work from after this. He has released a film this year called The Bird Catcher which is getting great reviews. I am also just reading an American remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal is in the works, but I can't find any more information.

I'll post a review in spoilers once some people have had a chance to watch.

Oh man, I actually nearly cried watching that. Didn’t bother to really read up on it beforehand, so went in blind. It really struck a chord with me due to my own family, so it hit me quite hard watching that.

Could not take my eyes off of it throughout and you’re right that you forget you’re watching a film and reading subtitles. Totally. I predicted what was going to happen, but I don’t feel like it was predictable.

I feel a bit drained now. May post more thoughts later.

    Good first pick though.

    Can confirm.

Holy shit what a movie. Amazing pick Canuck. Good choice by Mik to start off with yours as well even if it was just by chance.

I never imagined that I could be so captivated with such a simple premise of a movie. Extraordinarily well done.

    Really good movie choice Canuck

It looks like there's going to be an American adaptation of this movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

I quite liked this. Didn't entirely blow my hair back, but just a very well put together film from the story through the production.

It was kinda like an inverted Die Hard, if that makes any sense..

All in all a totally worthwhile and enjoyable watch, and a terrific way to kick the film-fest off. Kudos, Canuck..

Just finished watching, Do we really need spoiler tags? I don’t think so.

This was good, often with films that have this simple set up you need a lot contrivances to keep it going, like that one with Ryan Reynolds where he is buried alive. This film didn’t need them though, the other plot unfolded naturally and didn’t need any gimmicks.
I was surprised at how large the cast was when I looked on IMDb, it’s quite an achievement for one actor to hold the screen for so long.
Especially while looking a bit like James Hetfield.
Netflix’s subtitles were really annoying though as they were audio described, not sure if that’s something you can change in the settings. As with all foreign language films I wouldn’t mind seeing it done in English as I will always feel subtitles are a barrier from being 100% absorbed by a film, you always miss a little something of the performance. It is true that with a lot of this being an unseen phone call that wasn’t as bad as normal in this film though.
    I give this ****’s I think.

My Netflix subtitles were just the words said. If mine had put stuff like "phone rings in background" that would definitely have taken me out of the film.

    So, my thoughts.

The one man cast film often goes over well for me, but I think on first viewing this is one of the best I've seen. We are given little to no detail about any of the characters from the start which, coupled with the scenario, makes it difficult to develop (especially in an 85 minute viewing). I think the film gets very clever here, having the audience piece together subtle hints and clues through brief conversations. It was a roller-coaster of emotion which we were taken through by a brilliant slow reveal, being given just the right amount of information at the right times. It makes you feel as if you are a bystander in the situation, going through the same emotions as Asger. Having the limited point of view and receiving the same information at the same time as Asger packs such a punch in the end that I could have easily been sitting next to him on speakerphone. I felt the same pain, dread, anger, and regret leaving me with a sick feeling in my stomach. Rare for me in film, which I think is why this one has stuck with me.

This film left me devastated, really.

Both big twists I saw coming, which is very rare for me.

My sister has bipolar disorder and has talked about having babies on and off for the last 20 years and this film was like watching my biggest nightmare play out on the screen. It was just so well done though. So much so that I didn’t even feel like I was watching a film.

I’m actually going to recommend it to my other sister.

    Nice one, Canuck.

Yep, enjoyed this tonight. Love everything that has come out of Denmark in recent years. Bloody brilliant. Olske olske olske hurdygurdy Nanne Birk Larsen.

About as good a film as you can expect from such a small set up and simplicity.

I picked the ending, sort of, but only after wrongly picking the ending three or four times before that.

Good twists, excellent pacing with how much you learn and when and portrayed brilliantly.

Some of the phone calls, particularly
are fantastically done. All other sound but that phone call gone and you legit feel in that conversation then and there.

I'm a billing coordinator, bascially I wait for project managers to send me mark-ups, then I make the corrections in the system and send out their invoices. At the moment I'm all caught up on my invoicing, so just waiting for more project managers to send me their mark-ups. I suppose I should be following up on unpaid invoices.

Also, with this movie having subtitles I think it may be better suited to watch at home.

Ha, yeah. My brother-in-law watches films at work. Lucky bastard. But then he does awful shifts, so. Got to take the rough with the smooth, I suppose.

So yeah me and the wife watched this last night and both loved it. Was a great piece of film and a real solid bit of acting. It was very good at keeping you engaged throughout, something that isn't as easy as it looks and the various twists were well paced albeit a little predictable at times.

I'd happily seek out similar films and its added to a list of really good Danish drama pieces in recent years. Excellent choice, @Canuck.

That's the plan. The wife works until 9 one day this week or next, I'll be able to catch up then for sure.

Alright, firstly, I really enjoyed the film. I like that kind of high-concept thriller with a really small cast and very few locations. It reminded me a lot of Locke, although the subject matter of this was much more life or death and therefore the film was a tad more melodramatic. If you liked this you'll probably love films like Locke, 127 Hours, Buried, All Is Lost...even things like 10 Cloverfield Lane, Gravity or 12 Angry Men.

The limited cast and locations means that the camera has nowhere to go so it intrudes on your characters and ramps up the feeling of tension and isolation. I thought that The Guilty did that incredibly well, it was a beautifully shot, edited and directed film. I like how stripped down everything was, very little music, barely any set decoration to speak of, even the lighting was quite sparse, which provided a really oppressive atmosphere, that made it a lot easier to buy into the film. I liked that it was no nonsense, provided barely any backstory as exposition, so instead it emerges into the narrative just drip feeding little nuggets to the audience. Didn't mess around too long getting into the major phone call, just enough for you to relax and then the film to jolt you quickly out of it. I thought that Jakob Cedergren was tremendous. The fact that he is barely ever not in frame means that he needs to be engaging. The fact that he is constantly framed in close ups means that you really get to see the minutiae of every expression on his face. His performance was layered and nuanced, full of bitter humour, derision, pain, anguish, regret, arrogance, humility, pathos...a real smorgasbord of emotions. I'm really interested to see what Jake Gyllenhaal does with the role, I like him a lot, but I don't see that film being quite so minimalist as this one.

As for the plot, I was completely hooked in up until a point. I was devastated when the seeping realisation becomes apparent that the baby is dead. However, I found the twist at the end of the mother being the killer and Michael taking her to a psychiatric hospital a bit too obvious and cliche and the film lost me a bit at that point and never captured me as fully again, as I found that it raised more questions that it answered. I actually don't think that the film needed the twist, it seemed a bit contrived, gimmicky and didn't add a lot. It allowed us to have the nice scene where Asger is waiting to see whether she jumped or not and his own confession to try and make Iben see the light, but this could've been achieved using Michael as the killer without the twist and probably could've worked more effectively. The psychiatric hospital stuff just seemed like an easy get out around a difficult conversation, oh it wasn't her fault, she was mentally unwell.

Overall, I thought that it was incredibly engaging, beautifully made, very well acted and a damn good film, although I think that the writing wavered a little at the end. Great choice though canuck.

If I walked home and saw that my wife had stabbed my baby to death, I wouldn't leave my other child in the house and take her to a psych ward. That was a bit fucking stupid, if I think about it.

Fairly certain no one has an honest clue what they'd do in that situation..

I’m pretty sure that it wouldn’t be that though. I’m not sure why he had custody of the kids anyway considering his criminal record.

Yeah I think this is why I didn’t see the twist coming (plus I really try not to guess).

Thought this all took place at Iben's home though.

That the father had lost visitation rights due to his criminal record and had found this whole situation unfolding while at his ex wife's house.

Pre reading this thread might have tipped some of you off to there being a twist. I didn't really think it was obvious, and I think it adds a whole new layer to the film that a lot of viewers will relate to.

Looks very interesting. Tried to scroll down when I started reading something that's probably spoilers.
