A block is nuts. even moreso than last year because you have the freshness on top of it you didn't have last year. B block is being slept on in comparison but it's nothing to sneeze at. also it's pretty crazy how big a pop goto got for his introduction. and taichi.

Sad that there is no Suzuki. But there's some killer matchups for KENTA and Moxley. I am super keen for Shingo/Ishii.. should be a war.

Thank God that Naito and Ibushi are in separate blocks.

    what's the final?

if ibushi's winning, ibushi/naito is way overdone this year. ibushi/shingo would be great. nothing else feels like that big a match. do they put moxley in the final?

if naito's winning, naito/SANADA? it doesn't seem they like to do the eventually tokyo dome main event as g1 final so i wouldn't expect they do naito/okada to foreshadow it in january.

Really looking forward to A LOT of the matches, but specifically:

    Ibushi vs Okada
    Ibushi vs ZSJ
    Ibushi vs Ospreay

    Cobb vs Shingo
    Cobb vs Ishii
    Cobb vs Moxley

    KENTA vs Okada

    ----

My early prediction on the final is Ibushi vs. Ishii, or Ospreay vs White

i would have guessed ibushi winning and ibushi/okada for the tokyo dome but i don't think gedo's ever had the eventual wrestle kingdom main event match up in the g1.

naito/tanahashi is a viable final if naito is winning, and they haven't run it since the g1 two years ago. but fuck show tanahashi some mercy and don't make him work a g1 final.

Couple of interesting things. Presumably Dallas is a Block A show meaning not the block Moxley is in.

Suzuki being out was not expected. He cut a promo after his match today demanding to be put in and also did so on twitter.

So stacked. Feels much fresher this year with Moxley and KENTA turning up and Taichi, Ospreay, Cobb and Shingo competing in their first G1s. Archer hasn't been in for a few years either. Suzuki missing out is a shame but sounds like there's something to that. There's so many interesting match ups on paper. I fancied Ibushi over Moxley beforehand so I'll stick with that. But could easily be Naito vs. a bunch of different options.

I wonder how bold they’ll be with KENTA. Part of me thinks this could be a super push for him.

Ospreay and Sabre are both in Okada's block. One of them is beating him and getting a title shot in London.

Okada - Ospreay DRAW, leading to the title match.

I think that's the most NJPW thing they can do, that people will love when all is said and done.

So that means they will do it.

I think I've died and gone to Japanese wrestling heaven. July 28th, Moxley v. Naito. And August 11th, Ibushi v. Okada. That's all I need in life.

my early prediction is: Okada and Ibushi go to draw. Ibushi gets 17 points, Okada 15. Ospreay finishes with 16 and defeats Okada.
Naito and White tying at 14, with White d Naito for tiebreaker.

Ibushi vs White final. Okada vs Ospreay in England.

    Okada vs Ibushi at WK.

Has there ever been a G1 with this many JHW in the mix now? Did Omega really change the game that much for NJPW?

Off the top of my head it would be Liger, Koji Kanemoto, Takaiwa, Minoru Tanaka, Kendo Kashin, Milano Collection AT, and Prince Devitt who have entered as Jrs before this year.

I don’t think anyone in the G1 this year is considered a pure Jr. at this point. Ospreay and Shingo are transitioning to heavy.

Liger and Takaiwa in 2000 and Liger and Tanaka in 2001. So there have been two Jrs in it before.

    official predictions:

ospreay wins A Block. he has loses to ibushi and okada. ibushi and okada draw in their match and each have two different loses, so the draw puts ospreay ahead by points.

naito wins B Block straightforward by points.

    naito over ospreay.

the way gedo books, i can't see anyone in the champion's block winning it. naito is the only viable B-blocker, and another okada/naito dome match makes sense. gedo doesn't run the eventual dome match as the g1 final so i don't see okada winning a block, and i don't see them doing an ibushi/naito final as it would be the fourth match they've had this year. ospreay seems like the block winner to pick then.

okada's two loses to sabre and SANADA, ibushi's two loses to KENTA and EVIL.

At the airport. Regretting my decision of the time of the flight. Waking up at 5 am on a day off sucks.

That guy scared the hell out of me when i was a kid.
Good to know Masa had it all taken care of.

I wonder what direction Rollins and Lesnar might take when they finally clash

I thought that he and the match itself were just fine, though the ending was a bit abrupt. Don't let the post-WWE hype yield any unrealistic expectations. The guy's being held together by shoelaces, hopes and dreams so I'm not looking for him to have any 5-star matches anytime soon. Just give me some stiff kicks, some signature spots and a GTS and I'm cool...

I highly enjoyed the show from home, can only imagine how it felt live. If everything pans out right, I'm hoping to make the Philly show in September.

Absolutely. Hell, if things really pan out right for me, I'd take the train up to NYC for the Hammerstein show. I've been there twice for ROH, would definitely love to go there for NJPW.

Ospreay vs. Archer was great. Ospreay has improved tremendously in the last couple of years, looking forward to seeing him work with the top heavyweights. Hopefully this Archer reinvention puts the nail in Fale's coffin as the go to fill in hoss challenger. He was class here, showed some personality and kept up with the athletic stuff. The claw is a great shout for a finish too given the Dallas connection.

Half watched EVIL vs. Fale. Life is too short to watch Bad Luck Fale G1 matches against guys with no chance of winning it.

SANADA vs. ZSJ was smooth as shit. Good lord. Those 2 can flat out go. SANADA will be a main eventer within a couple of years once Ibushi moves up further to replace Tanahashi. Zack is a national treasure, great to see his character work come up to the level of his wrestling. Fun to watch. Paid off all the fluid counter work with the finish too which I loved.

KENTA vs. Ibushi was decent. KENTA will work best as the surly, torturous veteran in the future, but you've got to build to that point I guess. Thought it was coming after the match. As a reintroduction it worked, giving him a big win and getting the Go 2 Sleep over as a death finish. It's a shame a lot of the athleticism and speed has diminished, but he'll adapt. Ibushi runs the table from here I think, with maybe a draw to Tana to set up the KOPW briefcase match.

Tana and Okada played the hits and delivered another fun match. Okada feels to be truly accepted as the ace at this point.

I think someone in WWE would give this to Vince and force him to watch it to see how things can be different — in the ring, commentary, and production — and I imagine Vince would have one reaction: SOMEBODY, GET ME LANCE ARCHER!

He’s knowledgeable and puts in a good effort but I have to say I’m never a fan of Kevin Kelly’s commentary. He just doesn’t sound excited enough, especially when compared to the real Japanese commentary which is the epitome of excited

As for the winner of the G1, I feel that there are a few options that are WrestleKingdom worthy - while also making sense in the long term story of New Japan:

Kazuchika Okada - the reigning IWGP Champion, also winning the New Japan Cup this year. Him winning the G1 as Champion would put him in the Top Tier Super Elite Class of Pro Wrestling Legends.

Kota Ibushi - after failing in the finals of last year's G1, Ibushi could defeat the man that defeated him (Tanahashi), and the reigning Champion (Okada) and winning the G1! He would have won the Openweight, IC, G1, and IWGP in just over the span of one year.

Hirooki Goto - he's done it before, and had multiple shots to win the IWGP Belt - but always fell short. This year he could win the G1, and get his much deserved shot at finally winning the Big One

Tetsuya Naito - the reigning IC Champion, he has said he wants to be the first Double Champion in New Japan History (IWGP Heavy and IC belts simultaneous). If he wins the G1 this year, the BIggest Match Ever could happen at WK.

Jay White - if New Japan wants to have Okada go on another massive reign - then White is the perfect Heel to fall victim at WK. He believably could beat Okada and this is a rematch from last year.

    DAY 2

i think i liked last year's g1 theme more. rating on scale of BAD, AVERAGE, GOOD, VERY GOOD, MUST WATCH and CLASSIC for any top-3 level motyc that may occur.

juice/shingo - shingo's inaugural heavyQ match! really well worked match that kept getting better and better as it went on, which is a trait in matches not as common as you'd think. crowd got into it and both guys threw some sweet lariats. VERY GOOD.

taichi/moxley - taichi attacks moxley during is entrance and they have a fun, energetic, under 10 minute match with smoke and mirrors. i enjoy stuff like this during the g1, it's just that in previous years when fale, tama, suzuki gun, etc. did it it sucked. but this i liked. moxley continues to look really good in new japan. GOOD.

yano/naito - a more out there than usual yano match with naito playing along. i enjoy these. for what it is, GOOD.

ishii/cobb - an awesome but flawed match. the best stuff in this match ruled and is exactly what you expect from these too. but i felt like the match lost its momentum at times, and cobb needs to learn how to do a good forearm strike if he's going to throw so many of them in a match with ishii. not the blow away great match you might hope for for these reasons, but still, there was some great stuff. cobb's failed powerbomb into a piledriver was a real holy shit moment. VERY GOOD.

goto/white - okay, so around 15 minutes in, at the height of the match, jay white hits this great looking urinagi. then he just ... stands around and taunts with goto's limp body for like a minute straight, then argues with the ref instead of covering goto. moments later goto makes his comeback and there's this spot where goto is waiting for jay to get up, but jay just keeps laying there ... and they play it like this is supposed to be getting jay heat? by just laying there and goto standing around mad that he's not getting up for his next spot. this was some dumb shit. the ending is made up to be a big deal with jay kicking out of these big moves in a row but the drama fell flat. there was also a dumb gedo interference right before the end, which accomplished absolutely nothing because this was immediately before goto hit his series of big moves for the win. this match made me angry. AVERAGE.

    G1 Night 2

-I'm really into Uemura based on this outing. Dude has a lot of ring presence.
-Kevin Kelly actually coming up with reasons for Chase being "so valuable to Bullet Club" other than leaving it at that is better. Last week, he might as well have been saying, "We promise Chase is more than the BC jobber!"
-Fale/Owens vs. Archer/Kanemaru was better than it had any right to be. Archer's transformation has been wonderful to watch. I don't expect his match against Fale to be that great, but it should be a decent big man romp.
-I love Young Lion-heavy matches. These LA Dojo guys seem pretty solid.
-Another great opening tag match. The heat between KENTA and Tanahashi was off the charts, and all the Young Lions were killing it. Looking forward to seeing more results from the LA Dojo.

-Juice/Shingo was a banger. Crowd was super hot, the action was fast-paced, but smart, and they did a wonderful job of putting Shingo over as a monster while losing to the more veteran Juice, who has had a mixed bag of success in the G1 historically. Just excellent storytelling that really solid where each man was in their journey. A-/91

-Mox/Taichi was a quick, enjoyable sprint. Nothing too special, but a good non-cooldown between tournament matches. Mox looks great in NJPW. B/85

-Naito/Yano was fun and short as it should have been. I was a bit shocked to see Yano get the W there. C+/79

-Is there any question that Cobb/Ishii was excellent? Just a lot of well-timed moves, a true battle of power with some wonderful selling and psychology. For as powerful as Ishii is, you almost forget how strong he is, and he really got to showcase that against Cobb here. Cobb absorbing Ishii's punishment and still coming back for more before starting to meet Ishii halfway on some bits was engaging as hell. Also, Cobb kicking out at 1 after the lariat was insane. It's also amazing how many times Ishii can have this style of match and always make it feel special. That finishing Brainbuster felt more immense than normal. Happy to see my boy start the G1 with 2 points. Damn, what a fucking match. A/94

-White persistent in treating Goto like he's below him, to his own detriment. It's a sort of underestimation where Jay knows that deep down, Goto is a tough son if a bitch, but he refuse s to acknowledge that by taking him seriously early on. On the flip side, Goto's trying to prove he's not yesterday's news and definitely not fodder for Jay White to have a lucrative G1. White was selling wonderfully for Goto. Ironically, this all went a long way into showing just how tough, tenacious and legit Jay White is, regardless if help from the outside. LOVED the Goto headbutts while holding Jay's hair and setting up for that GTR. Popped pretty big for the Shouten Kai. Great end to the night. A-/90

    DAY THREE

the theme is growing on me.

archer/fale - fun enough hoss match. they do a cool superplex spot that makes the ref fall over, and fale goes up better for archers chokeslam than i expected. AVERAGE.

ospreay/sanada - good match with some nice athletic sequences. didn't blow me away or anything but definitely good work. there was one great exchange around SANADA trying to hit his TKO. GOOD.

okada/zsj - nice quick match that didn't waste any time. sabre takes a really nasty looking tombstone and sells the effects really well. good home stretch with sabre reversing everything and putting okada in trouble. VERY GOOD.

ibushi/EVIL - they're definitely playing up ibushi's ankle. this was a really awesome 10 minute match stretched to 20 minutes, you could really feel them padding it to fill out the time. too many such cases! there was some good stuff in here. GOOD.

tanahashi/KENTA - this was pretty much KENTA taking shibata's place in the shibata/tanahashi feud. lots of ill will and a very hard fought match. i liked KENTA here more than in the ibushi match. KENTA wins very decisively. VERY GOOD.

I like the fact that the early portion is suggesting these guys aren't trying to kill themselves in order to get great matches.

shingo/juice was fantastic, and might actually be my match of the tournament so far. like tainted said, it built up nicely, pitching up the intensity of both men at the perfect time and not lulling before the finish. that spinning lariat juice threw after shingo blocked his one lariat attempt with his own lariat to juice's arm might be one of the nicest ive ever seen. lariat.

mox/taichi was awesome. he's much stiffer and not doing the flailing madman striking makes a world of difference. that uranagi through the table looked great, as did that leg throw that made taichi faceplant after blocking the superkick. really looking forward to mox/ishii.

yano/naito was just what a yano g1 match should be. short and fun. naito acting like yano tickled me more than i expected it to.

cobb/ishii was what you'd expect, and i dug it. that one cobb headbutt late in the match was insane, and ishii is such an amazing seller. there's just something off for me about jeff cobb. some of his strikes can be lacking, but he's also like, almost too beefy. like there will be times during the execution of moves, especially ones that arent momentum reliant, where it feels like his range of motion hits it's limit and there's this moment of struggle, however brief, that throws me off.

i think ima just skip white/goto, tbh.

I'm excited for EVIL/SANADA, since I predicted SANADA winning in both brackets I filled out, EVIL will win.

    Moxley/Ishii will be really GOODT

Don't know when it's coming but I want Ospreay vs KENTA

Moxley looks a little different in terms of his performance but I'm not sure if it's a whole lot better. Maybe I need to re-watch them but I've been kind of meh from what I've seen. The Cobb match seemed rushed in some ways.

-First tag match was pretty solid, but didn't pop like the night before. Uemura still looks good though, and a decent win for Henare
-BIG LOL at Shota Umino wearing the Mox shirt and carrying out his Championship.
-I can't say it enough, but Moxley feels so fresh in NJPW. Decent preview of the match with Cobb, great showing for Umino and Narita, too. Loved the fire from Narita, and that Umino suplex on Cobb
-Skipped the Ishii/Switchblade tag match because they were the only two I cared about.
-I need more Shingo/Suzuki in my life.

-Archer/Fale was perfectly fine for what it was. The wild brawling in the crowd at the beginning was pretty fun, but it really lost most of it's intrigue by the latter half. I think the crowd digs Archer, though, so that helped this still decent to get through. C+/78

-Ospreay/SANADA was a bit awkward. It started strong, then fell into this territory where both didn't really seem like they knew what they wanted to do with each other. When they started going for the fancy shit, it felt like the chemistry wasn't there. But holy shit, did those last 6 or so minutes really turn it up. The rapid changing of holds during that part was mesmerizing, and the finish was a convincing way of giving Ospreay his first G1 victory. B+/88

-Nothing too special for ZSJ/Okada. I liked their previous two matches better. I think the last couple minutes were great, but otherwise it kind of felt like the standard idea of this match comes to mind when it's booked. Which is to say it was still good. B+/87

-EVIL/Ibushi was a hard ass hitting match, which isn't too surprising from Ibushi, but EVIL was out there throwing bombs. This one escalated at a great pace, but it felt like a unique kind of match for both of them. Not sure how long Ibushi has been using the Boma Ye, but that was an awesome touch. The finish was white-hot. One of the best counters to the Kamigoye I've ever seen. Big win for EVIL, and I think both well deserved and well-booked. A-/93

-Tanahashi/KENTA was better than KENTA/Ibushi for sure. I think there's an obvious parallel of when Shibata faced Tanahashi in the G1, and while I think that moment was much more epic than this turned out to be, this was a lot more promising for KENTA and grabbed me by the end of it. I love that Tanahashi has gotten more used to the stink attitude, so he doesn't even play with KENTA. The way he stood up after one of those kicks made it feel like he was so pissed and annoyed with KENTA's style, both because he was sick of it and it hurt like a bitch. Was a good way of showing both KENTA as the more dominant wrestler and Tanahashi as the more veteran-like wrestler, and were this like 3 years later, we would easily see a different result. Best GTS so far, too, and the impact of KENTA having defeated the previous G1 finalists in his first two matches with a recognizable kill move...that helps makes the match feel bigger than it is. I was very disappointed at the lack of focus on the potential of Tanahashi countering KENTA's kicks with relentless dragon screws, and even more so with the few times it happened not really being played up. But overall, I got the feeling KENTA will only get better as the tournament goes on. A-/90

    DAY FOUR

yano/shingo - another really fun yano match with a great ending. GOOD.

juice/goto - this had a really awesome big punch spot at the end, but other than that just a match that never really got going. AVERAGE.

moxley/cobb - this was one of the question mark styles clash matches, and it didn't turn out too well. nothing actively bad really, just not much of a match. AVERAGE.

ishii/white - the jay/gedo heel stuff is so stale and lame, it hardly gets heat anymore. this was a good match with some especially good stuff towards the end, but it's not to jay's credit if this is the best he can do with ISHII in the g1. jay is again doing these weird spots where he falls down instead of standing up for his opponent's comebacks and this is supposed to get him heat. for falling down, for avoiding his opponents offense? it's so weird and takes me out of the match. GOOD.

naito/taichi - unforgivable for this match to be so long, and so full of bullshit. but there was some good action buried within. you know, i bet if you told taichi to drop all the gimmicks and go out and have an action packed 10-13 minute match, he would be good. AVERAGE.

disappointing match unfortunately. went way way way too long, first 15+ minutes nothing happened. new japan needs to stop doing matches like that, especially during the g1.
