'selection' is a common term for this, how people end up doing certain things.

it's not that we care about women's national/professional soccer more, it's that in general soccer as an athletic activity for young women is a bigger thing in america, so the women who have a chance to be very good at it are more likely to actually try it and stick with it. https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/wo...soccer-n385346

Didn't post much in this thread over the tournament as I didn't know a huge amount about most of the teams, but just wanted to say I thought it was bloody fantastic, so many entertaining games and the big crowds have made it far more atmospheric even than I remember it being four years ago. The fact it was given primetime billing on BBC1 over here should help it become even more popular, which in turn should help keep the players improving. Great stuff.

I hate Jonathan Pearce so much.

This would be the biggest upset ever if the Netherlands win etc, they are the European Champions! It would be mildly surprising if they won.

They talked and they backed it up.

From what I saw they were the best team but doesn’t look like other teams are that far off.

England play the best football. America are the best team.

This time next year is going to be very, very interesting.

    Congrats guys.

England have periods in games when they are quite strikingly a level above whoever they are playing, including the US. It's only periods though, even against the weaker teams we faced in this world cup there are these very strange chunks of play where we become sloppy, lazy and prone to big mistakes.

The US don't hit the peaks of play that England do, but their consistence makes them the better team.

Other countries are definitely catching up. This was only the second time the Netherlands qualified for the Cup and they were in the finals and they are the defending European champs. England is one tough team but not always been the case. Lots of teams are starting to put money and resources into their women's teams. Funny thing is that the US still spends more on their men than their women.

USA didn't really have to do that though.

Periods of play don't mean much though, if you saw Japan in the second round game against the Netherlands you would think they were the best team on earth (They still lost...)

England probably finished where they are in the women's game right now, about the 4th best. I would still put France and Germany slightly above them even if they didn't hit their heights during the competition.

Its good though, those 4, the Dutch, Japan, Canada and Australia, Italy and Spain improving its all beginning to close up at the top which made it more annoying for me that the USA won without really having to get out of second gear.

Spurs Women's first game in the Super League, against Chelsea, is going to be live on the BBC. And the first NLD is going to be at the new ground. My wife is going to kill me if I get into women's football as well.

About time we had a general women's thread, I suppose. If there isn't one hidden somewhere, that is.

There probably was one back in the day, but it was made up of 10% MMH talking about Marta and Sue Smith and 90% everyone else posting hilarious videos of the goalkeepers being shit.

That was my lasting impression of women's football until the World Cup in Canada in 2015.

Only if I was talking about Marta being the most overrated player ever!

I don't mind Sue Smith, big blue so shes alright with me.
