Can Movies About Wrestling Be Serious?

100% yes. "The Wrestler" is the best portrayal of the business you could find in film. Pretty much every other movie about pro wrestling, whether it's "Bodyslam" or "No Holds Barred", even the newest movie about Paige, all comedies. Now we don't have a laundry list like football or basketball for example of movies to pull from, but you have think we're due for another "The Wrestler".

    Thoughts?

I want a comic book style of movie about wrestling. Something that takes the ridiculous stories of pro-wrestling more serious with an MCU like feel. Not afraid to be funny or make fun of itself, but you have epic other-wordly characters that wrestle as if it's real.

But in general, yeah, I think you can totally have a serious movie about wrestling. "The Wrestler" proved it, but I think you can do it without being so uber realistic or depressing. I think people are just kind of hesitant to do so because of the general opinion of how seriously people take wrestling.

Also worth acknowledging - wrestling already has some outstanding documentary style offerings. Beyond the Mat, 30 for 30: Ric Flair, and Andre the Giant's HBO doc were all top notch. Even some of the WWE network doc style content and Wrestling with Shadows have strong moments.

This is just more evidence that the individual stories can play well in a serious format.

Someone will make a real movie or doc about the Rock's life story someday that will be unbelievable. Think about it, he's had a crazy story. they're just waiting until after his nigh inevitable turn in public office.

Oh yeah the documentaries about wrestling are pretty fucking dope. The History of Pro Wrestling that A&E used to always show is probably my favorite of all time.

No you wouldn't unfortunately because all that shit about why he was killed is extremely speculative. He didn't have anything else interesting about his life other than his death. Even then, do you really want to see a movie about a guy shot for smuggling cigarettes in the wrong neighborhood? Lol.

Speculation, in the right context, can make for a fun movie.

Also, I would rather watch a story about a guy smuggling cigs in the wrong neighborhood, than one where he is smuggling them in the right neighborhood.

I would definitely pay to watch a documentary about Haku.

Now I want a John Wick style movie about Haku.

And now I want the same thing.

Perhaps even more than I want my New Day 3 Amigos movie.

You could do a documentary just on his hair.

This seems like a silly question. Of course it could be serious. If they can make nearly half of the movies that have come out in the last year and the premises are as out there as they are, then they could make a serious wrestling movie.

He was apart of one of the greatest debuts of all time!

100% agree. One of my earliest memories being totally convinced wrestling had to be real. While still remembering the time my aunt slowed down a big boot between Smash and Barbarian at Survivor Series 1987 where one of them completely missed yet sold it like a gunshot.

I don't think I ever witnessed Dino Bravo win a match.

If I recall correctly he won at the first Survivor Series and at Mania V. Think Mania V was against Ronni Garvin?

Has there ever been a good documentary about El Santo or Mil Mascaras?

Two of the biggest wrestling icons in Mexico ever, absolute cultural icons and movie stars, Hell Santo even had a comic book.

They'd be fascinating to profile with a production like 30 For 30.
